You're right that deep throws are a small percentage of the chunk plays in the NFL. That's not the same as saying that a threat is nice but not a necessity.

Actually going often to the threat may not be a necessity but having the threat is a necessity.

In your own words you say that Chase "can definitely beat you deep." That's a huge part of his value. That threat affects how defense play him and the Bengals as a whole. In fact, the article you cite states that exact thing: "Taylor noticed defenses playing Burrow differently, taking away the deep balls that made the Bengals offense so lethal."

This article you cited says it best with the words of Mahomes:


If you don't have the over the top threat, a defense can take that away AND the underneath stuff.

I do think Tutu is a deep threat and I've seen other receivers get deep also.

I think the "threat" of a deep pass means nothing if the defense knows the oline can't protect long enough for it to matter.

So a deep threat is meaningless if the protection can't marry up with it.

This chart from Fantasypros shows what some of us are seeing.

316 carries and just 2 have gone for 20+. That is fairly unbelievable, especially behind the 5th best run blocking unit in the league?
The chart points out he's "turned some 30+ yard holes into 5- 15 yards"

What % of his runs resulted in a 1st down or TD?
And only in the minds of madden did the rams have a great run blocking o-line this year

Agreed, you might not hit a lot of deep passes, but you have to force teams to respect the threat in order to open up the rest of the field.

This is exactly why there is a large contingent on this forum that pulls their hair out in frustration because Atwell isn’t getting enough deep targets.
