If Donald signs, who gets tag in 2019?

Joyner would get a big raise, and already is highly paid for his position. Saffold would get the OL tag, which is based on LT pay - too expensive for a guard. Suh would probably be a bargain - but it wouldn't surprise me if they promised him not to when he signed with them this spring.

I don't think they will use the tag this year, unless it is for Donald. If he signs, there likely isn't a good candidate - especially since there won't be a ton of cap room available.

Nobody will get it if AD signs long term. Suh will either resign for something like this year, unlikely for him to do that or us to spend the money there. Joyner is gone after this season, you don’t spend $14 million to tag a free safety when we’ve spent all that money elsewhere. And Saffold has been discussed extensively already so I’ll just say unlikely for him and no chance at getting tagged.

If you don't think anyone will get tagged next year if AD signs, maybe tag Joyner again for another year? I ask not knowing cap space ramifications...

I see what you’re saying regarding Joyner but they did it with Trumaine and Joyner is superior albeit at a different position but an excellent cover saftey. Saftey tag is a relative bargain at 11.2 mil so we can keep his services for 2.2 mil more when we’ll have more cap room (than this year). This would be for 2019 only however. After that, I agree Joyner will be gone.

Will the Rams have more cap room? Figure just shy of $13.5 million for Joyner. Gurley will be on his 5th-year contract as a high draft pick, so will be getting a substantial raise. Cooks' extension kicks in, and is front-loaded. Three OL are free agents, two of them currently very cheap and the third under-priced compared to what he can expect now. There are of course a number of other free agents. The figures being thrown around for AD sound like a $16-18 million dollar raise. In that situation, the Rams could easily decide that $13.5 million for Joyner is not practical.

Joyner eating close to $14 million of our approximate $50 million with all the other free agents we have just doesn’t make sense. We have three linemen hitting free agency which likely would take priority imo. I just don’t see any way he’s tagged.

Totally agree. There will be no tag in 2019.

The best thing to consider with not using the franchise tag is the front office will have everybody they want on a long term deal signed already. I could see a mid ranged deal or two, but nothing major or needing a tag of any kind.

No one, because the Rams will keep everyone they want and sign everyone they need. If they can't sign someone, they'll trade a pick for A+ talent and sign that guy long term.

Me and OldSchool have the same attitude towards re-signing Suh and Joyner....

Get Peters locked up is the next big move followed by Goff of course... We need Peters for this D! PERIOD!

I just feel sorry for both then.

Thanks for all that info. Interesting too, the difference in value by position. 1st time getting a good overview from the chart.

I like Joyner a lot. But, this salary cap shit is very complicated. GM's/Presidents need to get more credit for the balancing act they have to face year in and year out.

I could see that happening. In 2019, the Rams have 61 players under contract and over $49 million in cap room, according to spotrac. Seventh most int he NFL.

Somehow, I wonder if snead says we gotta pass on Joyner for cap reasons. Seems he has an eye for talent at that position anyways. As much as I like joyner and his cover skills at the FS spot, I get the feeling he's the cap fall guy next season
