I honestly don't know much about him (McDaniels) as it relates to that. So, I guess that's why I am open to him.

What do the players say in NE?

I wouldn't think his name would be considered if he didn't have good rapport with players... I.e. Ability to lead.

He certainly has the X's and O's nailed down. Which is big for me.

This is an off topic question, but in hindsight should the Rams kept McDaniels as OC? 2011 was horrible, but the lockout and injuries had as much to do with it as anything. McDaniels is a good OC and Fisher never did any better.

Yep; McDaniels was the best OC we've had in years regardless of the stats that one year.

He has the X's and O's nailed down, and I would add is an excellent playcaller. Very good at being unpredictable and keeping the defense off balance. The Anti-Boras, almost as if he is made of matter and Boras is made of antimatter.

It really comes down to the personality/leadership thing - that's where the risk lies with McDaniels.

To me the leadership is more important than the Xs and Os for the HC. The coordinators job is to handle that. You don't want a HC that is clueless with Xs and Os (like Fisher on offense), but I think it's secondary with a HC.

A lot of great coaches have big egos ...Parcells jumps to mind
 
For my money, I still think we go through the initial interview process with assistants, and decide on a vet HC like Gruden or Payton. That's what my gut is telling me.

HOWEVER I could see Shanny coming here (I'd be okay, but not thrilled with it) with Joseph tying the knot on his first visit with a Denver. He's their guy. I know shanny likes it there and has ties, but Joseph does as well and all the reports suggest it's a marriage made in heaven bw him and Elway. There are strong ties there as well.

Patricia/McDaniels will land in a location like San Fran where they can bring in Garrapoulo and stay away from AFC/Patsies.

McVay gets his pick of bolts (preferably) or jauguars, and Lynn lands in Buff.

I don't necessarily disagree ... although I do want someone with a solid foundation of X's and O's on offense, I think that is imperative with the investment made in Goff. I think the right combo for the Rams has both.

I agree 100%! This^! As I have said, is my major concern no matter who we bring in as HC!! But there is really no telling, until the SB is over, which coordinators/ Assistants will be available! This is the problem!!

Connections... Vermiel had them, Shanahan (with the help of his dad) has them... Gruden has them...

McVay? The age thing isn't a knock except for the fact that he hasn't grown a long list of connections yet (not his fault, it's early in his career).

Pass on McVay for me... too risky.

I can see why that would concern you. But then again Mike Shanahan hired him and speaks highly of him, and Gruden has also been around a bit. It's like anything else, I think, where guys in a given environment know who's rising and when you're a dude like McVay you're gonna have interest from other coaches around the league who have coached against you or been in the division as well. The NFL is a pretty tight fraternity in that way.

And using your example of Vermiel... I love the dude but it's not like his connections led to a strong offensive staff right out the gate; he went with what he thought was a safe option that gave us a plodding and difficult to watch unit. So for myself what is more important is that in choosing a young rising offensive mind you are dedicated to growing him into the head coach you want, surrounding him with good talent and helping him make the required staff changes as you go forward.

IMO hiring Shanny, McDaniels, or McVay will give this team an offensive identity where they will have a consistent edge in gameplanning that cannot be hired away by other teams. No candidate is perfect, but I think all three are good coaches and deserving of the job, and if the Rams choose one of those guys and support them properly we're going to be in good hands.
