Rams running back Todd Gurley followed up a strong rookie season with a less successful 2016 campaign, but it looks like the rollercoaster is headed back up in 2017.

Gurley became the first player since Calvin Johnson in 2011 to score six touchdowns in the first three games of the season when he scored three times in last Thursday’s victory over the 49ers. Gurley also ran for 113 yards in that game, marking his first time over 100 yards on the ground since that rookie season.

The strong start to the year has made Gurley the choice as the NFC offensive player of the month for September.

Gurley ran 63 times for 241 yards and four touchdowns while also catching 13 passes for 140 yards and two scores as the Rams opened the year with two wins in their first three games. He’ll try to get October off to a good start against the Cowboys this Sunday.

Great job by Gurley and the whole offense.
Glad to see some appreciation for the Rams.
I am not even sure if Gurley was the best Ram offensive player in September, I would have placed Goff ahead, as Gurley lost the ball too often for my liking.

McVay has been a revelation so far.
I had no opinion of the hiring but was open
minded.
It's only three weeks in....and other teams will adjust, they always do....but from a historically bad offense last year (and a long historically bad run on O before that) to the top scoring O in the league....dude is brilliant.
The whole O is better, much much better.
The great thing is, in terms of the O and Gurley, just scratching it.
Gurley will be a 2000 total yard guy. He has that kind of skill set. With an O coach who can get him the ball is space....great things ahead.

I've been impressed from the start with McVay and the staff.
Decided early on to cut their losses with GRob.

Without a 1st round pick or a huge amount of cap space, they have added an all-pro T (without whom, I don't see Gurley, Goff or McVay having the success they have had so far this year), a major upgrade at C. Their top 3 wide receivers (including a true #1) and a dynamic TE.

Well deserved Honor!! I want to see him get 159+ Yards rushing and 59+ Yards Receiving against the Cowpie's this week-end!!(y);) That will give him a great start for the 1st quarter of the Season!!:D

Edit: I forgot, 2 TD's minimum!!

It sort of came and went with a whimper. And it’s not like anyone gets hung up on in-season recognition. Player of the Week honors. Player of the Month recognition. It’s nice and all. But not exactly what players and teams focus on.

But it is worth remembering, at least as it relates to Todd Gurley being named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Month, just how far he fell last year in his regrettable sophomore season and just how far he’s climbed back up this year. Which makes this distinction mean just a little bit more.

“For sure. Like I said, you have your ups and downs in this game. Every year is not going to be a good year and, obviously, I figured that out last year,” Gurley said. “All you can do is move forward, just keep working hard, control what you can control and just take it day-by-day preparation, and once the season comes you just let all the anger out that you had and that you worked hard for in the offseason. So, that’s why I felt like I’ve been doing a great job of doing now.”

Gurley ran for 241 yards and four touchdowns in September while adding 13 catches for 140 yards and two scores. In the process, he’s helped the Rams solidify a respectable ground game the last two games while also being a productive asset in the passing game.

The Rams, partially as a result, have been the NFL’s best offense over the first three games while averaging a league-high 35.7 points per game.

“There’s a lot of other really great players in this league and a lot of guys that did an excellent job in the NFC offensively, but anytime you get an award like that, we’re very happy for Todd,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said. “It’s a reflection of the offensive unit as a whole.

He certainly has done a lot of great individual things, but a lot of that stuff doesn’t occur without great blocking up front, good job by (QB) Jared (Goff) distributing the ball in the pass game, making sure we’re not running into some of those bad looks.

“Todd will be the first to tell you, he’s got high expectations for himself and what you feel good about with that award is that is a reflection of the unit as a whole and I think those guys have done a nice job. But, it’s three games and we’ve got a lot of football left to be played and we know that in this business it’s a very humbling game where it’s, ‘What have you done for me lately?’

And we’ve got a great challenge against a very good defensive opponent for the offense and for Todd and those guys are doing a good job this week of getting ready for that.”

Gurley’s production this year can be partially traced to the significant upgrades the Rams made on the offensive line, adding left tackle Andrew Whitworth and center John Sullivan, a much better receiving corps with Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Tavon Austin and Gerald Everett. It was important to McVay he didn’t prejudge Gurley based on last year before assessing him alongside the improvements.

“When you look at Todd, what you want to make sure is that instead of just looking at the numbers, you watch the tape and really see what’s the reason for why you think maybe things didn’t go the way that you wanted last year,” McVay said. “What you see when you watch the two years that he’s been in the league, before you get with him is you see an excellent talent and you see a guy that has got great natural run instincts, fearless competitor.

“So, to say that you’re surprised by this, the way that he’s worked day-in and day-out, you’re not surprised because those are the expectations that you have for a great player like Todd. To answer your question though, you didn’t have any worry that he wasn’t the guy that he was his rookie year just based on the numbers and the production – still had a whole lot of confidence in him and that’s been merited by what he’s done so far.”

I wasn't expecting this at all, especially since I believe the Express! is only just getting warmed up. He has just started trusting his OL after is worst football season ever last year. What happens when Jared starts finding him consistently in full stride and open space where he can terrorize the LBs and DBs with his brute power and sheer speed & moves? After Sean gets the Gurley Man and the main receiving core going as high impact weapons, will he re-introduce the NFL to our little big man, Tavon, and his electric Warp 5 speed & quickness?

What, like Gurley didn't earn the honor? What is his problem, and why does he even have a show in that market? It has to be the most self loathing market sometimes. I don't get it.

Preaching to the choir brother. I have zero experience and could catch on fast with D'Marco helping me, you or anybody else... fuck those pussies!

Told you guys he would break out. Just a feeling....a very good one. Keep it up, brother Gurley, offensive line, QB, TE's, WR's, and staff. You are all part of his success.

:p

Gurley will follow his player of the month honours with NFC offensive player of the week.

Absolutely dominated.

Enjoy the feeling

And no fumbles this week

He's put this team on his back

Gurley is playing like an MVP never mind player of the week or month

As far as I'm concerned, if he keeps this up, I'd have no problem naming Gurley as the MVP.

Gurley has 596 yards and 7 TDs in 4 games... He's averaging 149 yards and 1.75 touchdowns per game. If that continues, over 16 games he'd have 2384 total yards and 28 TDs. Please don't get hurt Todd!
