To be honest... I picked a watermelon with the biggest white spot - generally a better rule of thumb than thumping them. Unfortunately the whole bunch sucked. I was really going for sweet for that salty sweet effect.Why not ripe?
I'm a big fan of Alton Brown and Bobby Flay. They have both made a point that in melon farming they don't go out and turn the melons. So the ones that have spent the most time on the vine have the biggest (most prominent) white or colorless spot. It's always worked well for me until this particular melon. So... Lemons and lemonade and all.
