Is height really that much of a factor? Name these three past players...

Height:5 ft 11 in (1.80 m)
Weight:198 lb (90 kg)

Height:5 ft 11 in (1.80 m)
Weight:184 lb (83 kg)

Height:5 ft 9 in (1.75 m)
Weight:180 lb (82 kg)

Is quickness important? Mental quickness? Awareness of how plays are developing? What if we ask a player to cover a variety of different zones from a variety of different alignments?

FYI, in that order
Darrell Revis
Leroy Irvin
Antoine Winfield

I am looking forward to seeing how they use each CBs skill set as we have a nice array of talent who we are told display great play recognition. If the safeties play as I expect, and we don’t suffer coverage breakdowns, we might really have something

So if the Rams want to start experienced DBs then:

Boundry CBs Durant, Whitherspoon
SCB Shelly
SS Fuller or Lake
FS Johnson.

Rotational guys: Tomlinson, Lake and Yeast

That gives them experience in their starters with decent speed. I think Lake could start over Fuller later in the season. I don't see a problem with that lineup. They are basically 4 deep at CB and the same at safety. Tomlinson can play inside or outside. Lake can play in the box, middle zone or as part of a deep shell.

OK.. I'm officially on the Duke Shelly train. I only questioned the Ram's decision because he was cut twice already, was on waivers at the time, and he is fairly small. But it appears that he is sticky in coverage and knows how to break up passes. After learning a bit about him, I am surprised that he was available. You never have enough good corners, and I'd rather have him than Rochell.

I like the Shelley addition; and think he will play and be one of the Rams top three corners.

However, what does it say about Pro Football Focus and its value, when the CB with it’s third highest coverage garde hits free agency but only gets a one year deal for a little over the veteran minimum; and is then waived?

Are the 32 NFL teams, coaches and scouts that clueless, or is PFF’s grading system that faulty and perhaps useless.

For transparency, I have never been a fan of PFF.

Years ago when it first started getting media attention (largely due to Cris Collinsworth’s involvement), I did research on how PFF graded. It’s formula and methodology.

Personally, I found it faulty because it relied on assumptions and speculations, without consideration for the players’ responsibilities given the play call and game plan which PFF could not know for certain.

Not suggesting Shelley isn’t good.
Just saying I think PFF is very limited as a reliable resource.

Talked to my best friend who's a huge Viking fan about the pickup. Says he's small, aggressive and plays good in man. Doesn't like to play slot. After they picked him up he became a starter. Was a fan favorite. Doesn't know why they let him go. Likes him.

Yeah there's a lot of good opinions out there on him it seems. Which of course is a really good sign.

One of the most underrated players ever. Few, outside Rams fans, appreciated how good he was.
Well said, Londoner. And in addition to his defensive skills he was one heck of a punt returner. I always thought for years that he was the best fourth round pick in the history of the Rams.

If some of these guys can become close to the player that he was they should live so long......

Ran across this guy who thinks Shelley was a great pickup, points out some (eye-popping) PFF grades, and thinks people are sleeping on the Rams' D:

Still need a legit Edge (Rams have one nice prospect and a couple of jags) and a little more beef on DL (Brown looks to be depth at best. Donald will be triple team every play otherwise). Nothing spectacular - just a boost to become a little more balanced.

Jalen Ramsey is 6'1" and he was getting burned on more than one occasion.

Duke Shelley is a decent corner I guess by all accounts. It's weird how so many were wanting the team to get a waiver wire pickup and when they do it's met with jeers. Like dafuq do you want them to do??

Its nice to see someone say these things about our team. I don't know how accurate the guys are. The guy on top needs to fix his feed. Was kinda hard to understand him with the spotty audio. Either that or he has a speech impediment.

The schedule makers did us no favors. 4 playoff teams in the first 5 games. 3 are legit superbowl contenders. Its gonna take some patience on everyone's part to not feel like the season is over by then. The schedule does get easier after that. If they start 2-3 I'll be ecstatic with that.

With Kupp possibly being out game one it sure makes stealing a win from one of those 4 teams more difficult. I kinda feel like game one is our best shot. Seattle has a tendency to come out of the gates slow.

If Shelley and Witherspoon can keep Kendrick off the field I'm all for it. I saw exactly what I expected to see from Kendrick last year. Hell I'd rather see Jolly who is undersized with average speed than Kendrick. At least I know Jolly will give 100% every play something that hasn't been the case with Kendrick. That's why I see the Rams 4 deep at CB with Durant, Witherspoon, Shelley andTomlinson.

Oh BTW that guy on the YouTube clip sees exactly what I've been spouting all off season. Also again look at the top 4 CBs they have some real talent there. Now add in Fuller and Johnson, they have talent and experience at safety.

The only question mark on offense has always been the OL. That is fixed with Dotson and Avila. They should be able to run and pass protect. I like Jackson at LT but he's still raw in areas but by the end of the year and especially next year he's going to be very good.

Don't sleep on the Rams or you will regret it.
