What I am saying is the guy has unquestioned physical abilities and has something like less than 500 pass attempts in college/pros.
Green beyond green.
Maybe that's too tall a hill to climb?

Maybe thats because he hasn't developed at all and hasn't earned it.
Maybe its just going to take time.
To me bringing in a first round game for next to nothing to see if they can be revived is a no brainer, unless there is a rookie QB you love.
I have no specific interest in Lance other than his raw abilities.
If someone like Zach Wilson came available Id prefer someone like him who is more polished.

The 49ers invested an early first round pick just to draft him. They traded several other picks just to move up and pick him.

That’s a huge investment. If there was any potential there do they just give up on him completely? Shanahan is a good offensive coach. Dont you think he’d hang onto a player they invested so much in if he felt he had potential?

I don’t want the Rams wasting any time on Trey Lance. He’s not even as good as Justin Fields and Fields isn’t a good starter.

Exactly.
Just because a guy was drafted in the 1st round, doesn’t mean he is a 1st round talent.
In fairness, thanks to Covid, the draft was a little out of whack, and some player evals were way off.
Dallas doesn’t have a backup qb on the roster. If they go with Rush over Lance that tells you something.
Alas, if the Rams want to invest in a QB they need to draft one so they can have them for 4 years.

Supposedly it was Lynch who wanted Lance and Shanny wanted Mac Jones.
They may not be that great at evaluating QB talent.

Shanahan made Nick Mullens look decent. He couldn’t make Trey Lance even look like a viable backup.

This is an odd hill to die on but if you want to keep going I’m game.

Shows what a dice roll it is. Also it's about what is available in a given year's draft. You gotta take shots if you don't have one, even if the chances of hitting on them is lower than you want.

It will be interesting to see if the Rams use one of their top 3 picks on a QB. It will show what Stafford's long term plans are as I am sure they will sit down with him to discuss it. If he plans to keep playing, they will likley give him a new contract that will be cap friendly for next year's "all in season". Then sign another vet QB to back up. Maybe an Andy Dalton type if Jimmy moves on.

There is no hill and no one is dying on it.
Im not even saying "go get Lance".....its just an idea, nothing more.
Im not married to it at all.
Draft a QB, sigh another former high pick, sign a guy who's wasn't a high pick but has some experience, resign Jimmy G.....whatever.
It just seems a good time to really start exploring long term options for post Stafford.

IMO, Trey Lance has still not played in a offense geared for him.
Put in something like Greg Roman and the Ravens did for Lamar or what the Eagles did early with Hurts could produce a starting NFL QB.

Allen’s accuracy improved by his second year. He showed he could handle the NFL game at QB. Lance had not shown any signs that he had the mental capacity it nor arm talent to play at this level. He wasn’t just drafted last year. He had a good QB coach in Shanahan who didn't see enough potential in him to try to coach him along as the backup. If he had potential he’d still be a 49er.

He got hurt early and missed a lot of time, had a first round contract they could get rid of, the team discovered Purdy and thus there was no reason or need to shift the offense to meet his skill set.

No team is going to teach and run Greg Roman's Kaepernick / Jackson style offense and Shanahan's WCO at the same time. They are going to teach and attempt to master one as it makes the most sense for the team.

Lance was with Dallas for a full season, training camp and pre-season and couldn't find his way on the depth chart ahead of Cooper Rush. That tells you all you need to know.

Well, he has had multiple NFL offseasons and I saw him play a few weeks ago and he was all over the place.

He was simply overdrafted. He didn't have a ton of starts in college, and then played only a couple games his senior year due to Covid. Scouts fell in love with his athletic ability, and assumed he would develop the needed QB skills.

If the Shanahan felt that the first round potential was real, he at least keeps him around until either Lance or Purdy are fue for a second contract. Considering what they were paying Purdy, they easily could afford to retain Lance.

Greg Roman is not going to fix Lance’s problems. The best he could do is install the read option and pray. But from the little read option he ran with the Niners, it looked like he couldn’t even do that right.

I’m not a Stetson Bennett believer but the Rams have a better chance of making him a viable option than they do Lance.

Not sure how anyone would expect him to surpass Cooper Rush, a guy who has been on the team, knows the offense for which he's a better fit, and had won games for Dallas (9-5 record).

Why? When his skillset doesn't fit the offense? They found Purdy, signed Darnold, and were trying to win a Super Bowl. And a little read option is not a total commitment to a scheme.

Anyway,
My original statement:
IMO, Trey Lance has still not played in a offense geared for him.

I've not suggested him as a fit for Rams. Everyone is telling me what he can't do, but no one has or can refute the original statement.

Neither Dallas or the 49ers put him in a Greg Roman type system of which I believe he could have success. Strong emphasis on a running game using a read option or simply QB runs. One read passing game then run. That's all Lamar Jackson did initially under Greg Roman (not Todd Monken). And they showed commitment to the system as they made sure their backups also fit it.

Yes. He entered the league with very little experience in the passing game. And to try to immediately make him into a pocket passer or expect him to immediately have success in such is foolish. It may never happen.
