Probably the least surprising news for Rams fans by now. Its disappointing but had to happen. The injury history. Age. Decline. Woulda been nice if he took a pay cut but seriously who would do that in this day and age? Just like when Donald retired. They have to move on. They have a franchise to run. They owe it to the fans to put the best possible product on the field. We'll get over it when they start playing.
From what Kupp stated it seemed like he was open to that which is head scratching but apparently the Rams just wanted to move on.

The post-June-designation is a surprise (to me). The Rams don't often do that.

Less Dead-$ in 2025, with more cap relief in 2025. About $15M each.

But there will be Dead-$ in 2026.

I think the issue is he can no longer separate and Rams didn't want to pay him when he couldn't function fully in their offense.

He can do well in a simpler offense with a limited route tree for himself and will probably be more of a contested catch, jump ball guy on seams and fades from the slot from here on out.

This is intriguing as $15 mil is a lot more cap relief than we expected for this year. I guess they can earmark that for rookie contracts and in season spending as needed so whatever they currently have they can use still for free agents. I'd expect a CB to be signed soon at the very least.
The PRO: More cap relief for 2025 spending (less Dead-$ in 2025).

The CON: However, there will now be Dead-$ on the cap in 2026.

I'm sure he can still seperate but his production/availability didn't match his pay. I highly doubt we would have released Kupp if he made a lot less. The Rams have shown to get rid of players before the truly really decline. Its not like Kupp had a terrible year, its that it was terrible in terms of what we were paying him. I know I'm repeating myself but I only said head scratching because keeping him on as say a #3 would make this offense lethal with Adams. However the Rams want to move on and understandably so. Maybe McVay felt it was an insult to ask Kupp to be a 3/4 WR and that he could have better opportunities elsewhere? I know McVay likes to not get in the way of better opportunities for others.

Yes! Basically, the Horns want two #1 WRs as their starting top two. Cooper couldn't cut it anymore in that regard. :bullseye:

This is a really sad state of affairs especially the way it has been dragged out which feels tough on Kupp and his family. If I’m the chargers I’m on the phone for a home town discount!

Does the open 2025 cap space carry over to 2026 if not used? If so, I guess in the end it doesn’t matter much - except to give yourself extra 2025 for a major in season move. Otherwise, it’ll carry over and you are at the same spot regardless.

If it does not carry over - then it must mean we really spent a lot recently and need that money.

Edit: it does carry over. So no loss here for 2026 cap space with this post 6/1 designation - unless they use it all up in 2025.

The only think I can think of was the decline in his game. If they felt he was declining odds are they felt it wouldn't improve and just continue to decline.

He has had trouble separating the last 2 years. Usually his catches were made with a defender very close by. He was not the same.

I just want to say thank you to one of the absolute clutch Rams WR ever.
When OBJ went down in SB, everybody in the building knew where Matt
was going with the ball. That did not stop Kupp from being THAT Guy all the way down the field.
We score and The Megaman finished on Defense.
Love YOU Kupp thank you for Everthing you have done for this Rams Team!

Wow in the span of a week my jersey collection is outdated. But for real, it was awesome being a fan of Kupp. I hope he goes somewhere that doesn't play us often and gets a second wind. He deserves it. Thank you for the Superbowl Cooper.

Sad day for Rams fans, albeit one we knew was coming. Thank you Cooper for all that you gave us.

Interesting that they decided to save the cap money this season. Would that mean that they are making room for a signing or a trade perhaps?

Tell me a player better as a teammate, a guy who gives it 110%, the football smartest on the whole team except maybe Stafford, fan friendliest, need I go on,? Guy was everything you want in a player.
Just sucks how he's leaving.
Somehow he deserves some kind of goodbye, thank you type recognition from the team IMHO.

Thank you Coop, for your excellent efforts.
