Shelton's been around long enough to where I'd hope his play is more consistent than a rook sixth round pick.

But what Jake does is loads up PFF and then thinks he knows the score. Instead of realizing that chances are Limmer will improve in his second camp and likely win that job. Because Limmer is stronger and even as a rook who was making mistakes you could feel his impact on that line.

Shelton will make a good backup, and if Limmer shits the bed year two then we'll have a fallback plan.

Limmer improving is the projection that I think the Rams are making. I'm sure Shelton is just insurance and maybe a little veteran help for the kid.

And like I said Limmer upside is much higher.

Limmer's Pass blocking grade last season was worst in the league.
I'm not saying that Shelton is stout, but he did have a much higher grade in pass pro than Limmer did

Most of the Bears O-line was bad.
If Selton was that bad than what about Limmer?
PFF Pass block grade.... Limmer 42, Shelton 68 .... big difference
 
I'd guess the truth is that McVay himself doesn't know for sure who the starting C will be on opening day.

McVay talks in training camps about how "competition for jobs brings out the best in players."

One guy might be favored over the other, but both were starters on their respective teams for almost the entire season. So both guys will be given plenty of opportunity to win the job outright.

Shelton is who he is at this point. But Limmer *could* improve significantly from year one to year two. Question is, how much?

Will be interesting to see who takes first-team reps in spring minicamps.

Too much "this IS what will happen" regarding the center position. None of us, including vloggers wannabe journalists, know. It's pretty obvious what the point of this signing is though. We had a 6th round rookie who played decent enough. But he's a rookie and had some pretty egregious fuck ups with the obvious last one front and center. McVay is going to play it safe and have a backup plan in case he doesn't improve on those his second year.

Limmer will be on a shorter leash. But anyone who watched Shelton with us before know he sucks in the run game and is mediocre at best in pass protection and often gets destroyed in the power game. BUT the one thing he did do well was make calls at the LOS and had a great rapport with Stafford. I'd say the intent is for Limmer to continue to build on his rookie year but he's going to have to prove he's fixed the mental errors in camp for that to happen.

Although I haven't watched many of Jake's videos these past 2 years like I did previously I occasionally look for his takes on Rams signings and stuff. I don't care at all for his "other teams."

When deciding to watch youtube creator content the main things I look for are credibility, less rage bait headlines, and less space filling ramblings. In other words don't bullshit me with false headlines and don't lose me by taking 20 minutes for what you could've said in 5. Have to weed out the clowns on YT and there are many. The one I avoid is the channel that says shit in the headlines like "Rams' move is just not fair!" or some other nonsense that tries to sensationalize what I had already known happened.

Jake's all right. He's not perfect but I can stomach him for some opinions. I think Locked on Rams has improved recently even though I don't subscribe. Bringing another guy in worked because I found the first guy boring on his own.

Jake is a great dude, I know him personally as he lives in my area and he does offer up some excellent content and covers the draft, depth chart and free agency as it beats other information IMHO.

i believe Jake felt the Rams took a wrong and tried to right it with Shelton. I believe it will be a competition, however, Shelton is better in pass blocking as that was Limmer's issue at Arkansas too. Now Shelton is what he is and Limmer can improve that is for sure, however, Shelton does a good job communicating and calling out the stunts and blitzes as that is something nobody can monitor or grade only teams know how their center handles those scenarios.

That stat is deceiving because watching Shelton played, he was consistently get pushed back into the QB. With Limmer, he may graded lower because of the scheme and missed assignments. Time will tell with year two on Limmer. But strength-wise, Limmer can hold his own at the point of attack.

A large part of the stat is sacks, hits, and pressures allowed. Things like it looked like he got knocked over very badly or pushed back are a bit more subjective than questions such as "was the QB sacked?", "was he hit?", or "was he pressured to the point he had to move off his spot?".

Those questions are what PFF is measuring. As pertaining to Limmer v. Shelton, the rookie allowed sacks/hits/pressures at a higher rate than Shelton. That's why he was graded the lowest at pass pro in the league. PFF can't grade scheme and missed assignments because no one outside of the team knows precisely what the blocking assignments were.

As you say, the hope is that Limmer improves in his 2nd season. If he does he soundly beats out Shelton and we're all happy. If he doesn't, Shelton is an insurance policy.
