Clock rules

I’ve seen multiple times in the last year how a guy will go out of bounds, while not being driven back or fumbling or anything and the clock still runs.

I thought going out of bounds automatically in every instance where forward momentum is not impeded or possession of the ball remains that stopped the clock. Clearly I’m wrong, so what am I missing?

I’ve seen guys catch a pass and go out inside the five. Clock still runs.

From what I can work out, between the 5 min and 2 min mark the clock stops for a few seconds then starts again. After the 2 min mark it stops until the next play.

They changed that rule a couple of years ago I believe.
The clock stops when going out of bounds under 2 min in the first half and under 5 min in the 4th quarter I believe.
This was another attempt by Goodell inc to needlessly change rules.

The only reason I could figure they'd make this change was because it lets them add more commercials so it's all about money. There is less time spent with cameras on the field because clock stops less often. So to fit the game into a three hour period they get to add more commercial timeouts.

It removed more than a 3rd of the plays in a game. I want to say it was at least 30 years ago. Yes 1990. Since then the adjusted the clock rules slightly in 2008 and 2023 The college game didn't change and those rules sometimes get confused with NFL

Actually college clock rules changed last year. Specifically, they stopped killing the clock on first downs. In the past they did this to get the down marker in place and then would wind the clock.

HS ball has to be moving forward and possessed out of bounds at any time to stop the clock. Unsure of college rules.

I didn't realize it had been going on that long.
I must have noticed a handful of years ago.
It is interesting a league obsessed with helping the offense keeps a running clock in this way, probably costs each team a possession or two per game.

I saw a player pushed out of bounds at the 2:45 min mark and the clock stopped until the next play so I'm totally confused when the cut off is for the clock to stay stopped until the next play.

Edit - I always thought it was 5 mins but I saw a game a couple of weeks ago when that didn't happen. So I don't know.

If the player goes backwards out of bounds, the clock continues.

Same rules for the second half, but it is under 5 minutes instead of under two minutes.

I counted 16 commercials during one nfl break back in 2001. 16!!!!

I don't sit and watch them since then. Change channels, lower volume, leave the room, anything but give that many my attention.

Do you have a source? I can only find out of bounds. There is no clarity to sideways or backwards that I could locate. Generally speaking backwards typically happens when forward progress stops in the field of play and the player is pushed back. Officials will keep that clock moving in that scenario.

I’ve seen a couple times where a player runs backwards to get out of bounds to elude hits or defenders.

In fact, Sunday ticket and network games are the only time I’m subjected to commercials/ads.

Btw, why are the millions of us who shell out hundreds of dollars for Sunday ticket being pounded over the head with the same commercials that ppl get on the networks? Should be commercial free.
