The way I understand it if White played over 60% of the snaps on defense his salary of 1.7 million would be bumped up to 8 million. Therefore, I believe this was a good move for two reasons: first keeping him on the bench may have led to him becoming disgruntled and second, he wasn't playing at a high level and maybe one of the young guys will be an upgrade.

It's a salary dump. He had incentives in his contract that really bumped up his cap hit based on playing time.

So it wouldn't be fair to him to bench him because they didn't want his 5M deal bump up to 8M.

So it was a fair move. It opens up cap room...they were down to only 2M or so. Now this cap room can be carried over to next year or will be used to pay out incentives this year.
Yes I know. I wasn’t saying anything about why we were trading him - i’m well aware of the merits/benefits of trading him away.
It’s the trade comp. We might get a worse pick. Why not just do make it both the same year and give us the option (if there pick is better). I don’t personally believe that a 7th rounder a year later is one round worse.

Didn't the Rams also give-up a seventh round pick in 2027?
Yes.. not to important. When’s the last time a 7th round pick made the time a full year? It’s worth it to get rid of his shitty ass.

That doesn't explain why he hasn't practiced all year, though. I think they might have wanted to re-negotiate him to keep for next year & stash him, but he wanted to play now.

There are plenty of marginal guys on this roster I'd dump for such cap peanuts before a potential return to stardom like White.

The market is the market. Few teams probably wanted his contract and they did right by him to send him to a contender. These things help in FA where a good reputation for player relations is important.

I don't know about the 'hasn't practiced all year' comment.
Is that true? Where did you read this?
If White had not practiced since being benched, that could be to prevent the possibility of an injury that could cause some of White's contract incentives to kick-in.

Also don't know about the 're-negotiation' or 'stash' comments.
What would be White's incentive to go along with that?

Let’s hope we don’t suffer a couple injuries on the backend of the D.
I think I might’ve just kept him around, just in case. No big loss though. Young guys are gaining reps.

Every injury report for the season, irrc, has had White listed as DNP/NIR.

Incentive ? To stay with the team that paid him to rehab. If I were his agent, I'd have advised him to stay, add a year to help the team cap, and get healthy before wrecking what's left of his rep by playing before he is fully recovered. He was injured in Oct. last year. Most guys who return to quality production after an Achilles need more time than that is my impression. Could be wrong. I'm absolutely sure he was miscast as the #1 & asked to man cover monster WRs at 5'9" when he was a zone ace. Nobody's fault; crappy circumstances forced it.

Dunno if he'd improve enough to be anything but vet depth this year, but I'm sure the depth is shallower without him & you've wasted $$ & a roster spot on a bet that was always going to need time to pay off.

Just two points.

I'm sure White practiced at times this year.

My point on "incentives" was "contract incentives" that would hit the Rams' salary cap if they kicked-in should White be injured practicing after he was benched a month ago. And that's just speculation on my part.

The plan was always to bring White along slowly, if I recall, to let him get back into a groove post surgery, and also not to have him serving as our CB1. Both those went out the window immediately due to injuries in the secondary. I am curious how he would have looked if things could have went more according to plan, but glad to get the pick for him, and wish him well in Baltimore.

All the turd babies that say Snead always gets fleeced, you dropped dead weight and pick up a 2026 7th. Nice!
We got fleeced by giving up a 7th rounder ourselves. Should have gotten a pick and given up nothing in return. Just my 2 cents, but it is what it is. More disappointed we didn't get a 6th! Lol

Ravens fans: This guy fucking sucks and we have to pay him now? Why the hell did we trade for him our GM sucks

Rams fans: All we got was a pick swap wtf our GM suck.

BTW, it also opens a roster spot so this allows them to keep a younger player instead of cutting a guy once they activate Noteboom.
