I have a friend who is an assistant chef at Eleven Madison Park,( one of the top restaurants in the world) and last summer we had a cook off, him against me using a grill, some sea bass caught that day, and whatever we had on hand. 25 people in my yard and no clear winner.

My wife HATES to cook.

Like @1maGoh I was pretty up against it as a teen and had to learn to cook if I wanted to eat.

I make a pretty mean Portobello Mushroom and Sausage Baked Ziti. I have to use uncured chicken sausage because I can't have nitrates and uncured sausage is pretty expensive, but I still use tons of it and mushrooms, too.

I break all the rules... add too much garlic, too much meat and mushrooms, but it's become a massive hit not only with the fam, but also with family friends. Also make a pretty mean sausage and pepper sandwich.

I like cooking which is good because I also like to eat.

My wife can burn water. Nuff said.
My wife DID burn water once. Left the pot on boil, forgot about it, and came back to smoke in the kitchen. I still bring that up often, because it's hilarious and I'm kind of an ass. But that incident aside, my wife can cook MEAN Cuban food. However. Ever since becoming a vegetarian, she doesn't anymore. Except for rice and beans (where she soaks the beans overnight, seasons everything nice, blah blah blah), but it's not the same as Ropa Vieja, Picadillo, Arroz con Pollo, etc.

So, we eat healthier now, and I don't get the good Cuban food. It's a sacrifice, but I do it because I love her and want to make her happy. That said, when I'm out at work, and with the boys, I eat REALLY bad (by her standards). Steak, BBQ, gourmet burgers & stuff. She knows, doesn't really approve, but understands that I didn't sign up to be a vegetarian simply because she had a crisis of conscience. And in exchange, I make her panko-breaded eggplant & homemade all-day sauce (gravy), and other good (meatless) Italian dishes.

So, short answer - yes. She can cook.
She just doesn't make anything I like anymore. lol.

My wife is an extremely good cook. However, she works in a restaurant, so she pretty tired and done with it by the time she gets home. Like a lot of you here, I take care of all the grilling, and when she is not at work, she takes care of everything else. She is quick in the kitchen too. I think that is what I have learned the most from her. She can turn out a good meal in record time.

Yeah... I kid. She says she can’t cook cuz she doesn’t want to. But I hate doing dishes and prepping veggies so it works out. I’ve never found anything I couldn’t cook so I always know I can have something the way I like it or mess around with things so I have something different. I have literally thousands of dollars in spices, herbs, Asian seasonings, etc... so aside from a few staples like steaks, prawns, and spaghetti, we rarely eat the same thing twice. I’m not one who can eat the same thing two days in a row. Did enough of that in college. Haven’t eaten Mac n cheese since.

I’ve actually done the burning water trick twice. Separated the copper from a pot on one such occasion. That’s not a good smell for a kitchen.

Like a champ - and she makes complex shit too like Vietnamese Pho and Butter Chicken - stuff that takes forever. We just finished our house and spent most of our money in the kitchen so I’m expecting to see some returns on that investment. Yes, I’m overweight but I’m lucky as hell.

Heck yeah. I am blessed. She loves to cook. She made a pasta and sausage dish tonight with a broth, tomatoes, garlic and feta.

One of our faves. She also cooks soups. Has about 10-12 different ones this time a year. Currently broccoli cream soup and a chicken noodle in the leftovers stage.

I don't get the good Cuban food

Here is SWFL there are lots of Cuban cafes and restaurants, and I have to say I feel bad for you missing that great cuisine. Living in Ohio I'd never really been exposed to it at all. Now I love it, and one of my favorite things to eat is a Cuban sandwich. As you can imagine there are a lot of varieties/styles but fairly close to each other.

I would think that the Cuban food where you used to live in the east coast of Florida was even better.

Yeah, she can cook really well but is 65 now and has lost interest.

This was her 30 years ago.

It was pretty good, but it was off-the-charts in Miami (aka, North Cuba).

One of these days I'm going to make time on a visit to MIA to go hit Little Havana. I've never had the time to get to it on the trips in the last few years or so.

My wife is a decent cook. I had to teach how to though. She Used to over season everything. My mother is a fantastic cook. She taught me. I am an excellent cook.

I’ll post my steak recipe for you. I used to try different combos with venison. I finally got what I think is the best combination.

Soy sauce
Season salt
McCormicks Montreal Steak seasoning.

It’s not necessary to marinate the steak either. Let the steak rest about a half hour. Then drizzle soy sauce over the steak, move it around with your fingers to get good coverage. Then add season salt. Then Montreal Steak Seasoning.

Don’t overdo the seasoning. But get even coverage. Too much will ruin it.

Then broil or grill for whatever time you choose. I broil for about 6 minutes per side.

When you flip the steaks season the other side the exact same way.

Our favorite sub meat combo is Chopped ham, cooked ham and hard salami with American cheese. My mom likes provolone on hers along with the American cheese.

It doesn’t sound all that great but it makes the best subs I’ve ever had.

My wife is a great cook, and this is my favorite time of the year as a result. She has a "thanksgiving file" of recipies for michigan turkey, stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, gb casserole, etc. I eat like a king this time of year.
But this year, she's making desserts for our son's homeschool co-op fundraiser, where we'll buy our thanksgiving dessert(s), so she won't be making ... sniff sniff ... the pie....
She has an apple pie recipie that destroys any pie I've ever had anywhere. The crust is amazing, homemade filling, lattice top, the whole 9 yds. I once went to a Bob Evans & ordered their "grandma's apple pie" -- it was anything but, compared to my wife's. Just pre-made crusts & pie filling from a can, it was stupidly disappointing. Shamed the name of grandmas everywhere.
She makes a lot of great stuff, hard to think of it all, but I'm very blessed.

My wife is a pretty good cook, more adventurous than advanced. She's come along way from when we first met.
