The Yankees are 30 games over .500 62 games into the season? 46-16. If they play 8 games over .500 the rest.of the way, they'll have 100 wins. You can't win anything the first 62 games of the year but you can sure as hell set yourself up to win something

Odd fact heard during the Yankees/Blue Jays game tonight.

"The 5th place Orioles beat the fourth place Red Sox 1-0 today. The second place Blue Jays are now closer to the Orioles than they are to the Yankees"

This looks really good. It’s a tragedy what happened to Curt Flood once the Cards traded him to Philly. Disgusting, but because of the shit he had to endure, players now can choose whom they work for like any of us.

He was a player for 13 years, an announcer for 18 years and National League President for 6 years. He saw (and heard) a lot.

What I'm really impressed with is their pitching. The last 5 games (3 vs Tampa, 2 @ Toronto) they've allowed 0 runs, 3 runs, 1 run, 3 runs and 0 runs. That's 7 runs in 5 games (1.4 per) vs their closest divisional competition They now have a 12 game lead.

Yep their starting pitching has been a huge surprise.If LeMahieu starts hitting like he's capable of and Galo starts to give us a little more the offense could be unstoppable.
 
The Astros jumped on the Yankees in the top of the first. Bregman's 3 run dinger puts them up 3-0. Stanton hits a 3 run homer in the bottom of the inning. The Yankees went hitless over the next 7 innings..... 0 for 22 with a walk....a 16 pitch appearance by Rizzo who fouled off 10 two strike pitches.....while Houston hit another 3 run homer (in the 3rd). Then in the 9th, they sent 8 men to the plate and made one out (a Gallo K) at the dish, before Judge ended it. Pressly got nobody out (though IKF was caught stealing) and Stanek walked two before Judge ended it. Incredible game.
 
The Yankees get no hit by 3 pitchers on Saturday, then don't get a hit for 7 innings on Sunday. Baseball is such a strange game. At the start of the series, Houson scored 3 in the top of the first, then the Yankees scored 3 in the bottom. Then NY went 0-19 with a couple of walks from the 2nd through the 8th before scoring 4 in the bottom of the 9th to win. In game 2 then went 5 for 31 and scored 1 run. In game 3 they were no-hit going 0 for 28. And today they didn't have a hit until the 7th (1 for 21). Yet they pulled the game out on the back of some good pitching in the 10th. What a crazy game.

On another note, the Baltimore Orioles are just 6 games behind Tampa and Toronto and only 6 games under .500. Not too bad after finishing 58 games under .500 in 2021. What a tough division. Meanwhile, the Red Sox were mired in 4th place but went on a tear the last 23 games (19-4). However, they only managed to pick up 1 game on the Yankees (18-5). They did pass both Tampa and Toronto though. What a wild division.

Interesting stat heard tonight.

The AL East 2nd through 5th place teams are 121-74 outside the division. That percentage would be a 101 win season. Not a shabby division.

I checked their math. It's wrong. Those 4 are 110-75 (.594) which equates to a 96 win season. If the NYY non-division record were included they are 137-83 (.623) which equates to a 100 win season.

How tough is the AL East? The 5th place Orioles are 14-10 this month. They are assured of their first winning month since August 2017. Currently they are 35-40 on the season. Other than the Covid shortened 2020 season when they finished 10 games under .500, they've finished under .500 by 58, 54 and 68 games in 2021, 2019 and 2018. Their last winning season was 2016 (89-73), consequently the last time they made the postseason. Nobody expects them to make the postseason in 2022 but since their season-long 6 game losing streak in mid May, they are 21-16 since May 19th. :wow2:
 
I was reading some Yankee fan discussions and a few guys are down on Gallo (as everybody must be). But I pointed out, they're 58-22 with Gallo's offense virtually non-existent. Also with Hicks and Donaldson not very far behind him. And they're 58-22. If they can manage a 47-35 finish, the Red Sox would have to go 60-22, *after a win today. Or play better than the Yankees have to date. Tough task.

If either/or Gallo, Hicks and Donaldson come around, that 47-35 could be do-able or much better.

Baltimore 21-14, 3rd best record in the A.L. East since June 1st. 3 games out of the wild card. Whew!!! That's a tough division!!!
 
Yankees trading Gallo? Trading for Benintendi? I never believe initial rumors. I like that one though. However. Hicks is heating up. Donaldson appears to be also. What does Gallo provide? He provides great defense and a terrific eye....when it's combined with discipline. Homers and rbi, despite a low average.

Weird stat. He almost tied his career SF total (2) with inside the park homeruns (1) the other night. How does a guy who has a huge upper cut with home run power only have 2 career sacrifice flies? Because when he connects it goes out. And when he doesn't connect, he strikes out. He's only grounded into 12 DPs in 6 years. That's twice a season. Judge has grounded into 11 in 2022. Stanton grounded into 22 last year (6 this year). I'm certainly not saying they aren't way better than Gallo and way more productive but when a guy strikes out a lot you have to look for positives in other areas. His K% is up 1% over his career average and his GB% is down 3%. Unfortunately, his BB% (0.5%)and HR% (2%) are both down too. The one "positive" is his line drive percentage is up 10% over last year (right on his career average). He'd need to get going to show them he can help more in the 2nd half but that's a double edged sword. It also would make him more attractive in a trade.

So I wouldn't be upset if they kept him, given help is already coming from other players (Hicks, Donaldson). I wouldn't be upset if they traded him. Sometimes you stand pat with a squad who has won 72% of their games and sometimes you just gotta make a change. If they do, I hope they don't give up a top prospect.

Is it too early to give the Yankees one of the two postseason byes? They're 62-26 with 74 games remaining. If they can manage to go 44-30 the rest of the way, Tampa would have to go 59-15 to pass them. Boston and Toronto would have to go 60-13. And Baltimore....yes the Orioles....don't laugh......they're going to be 45-44 after tonight.....would have to go 62-11. It's all possible. Highly unlikely but possible.
