As retirement rumors swirl around Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, one thing that may reportedly help convince him to return for the team's Super Bowl title defense is a new contract.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that Donald "might need to become the league's highest-paid defensive player in order to play" next season, as his six-year, $135 million contract includes just $14.25 million in cash for 2022, which is well below his market value.

Donald was snubbed for Super Bowl MVP on Sunday night. He recorded a pair of key sacks and also put pressure on Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow on the Rams' final defensive play, which secured a fourth-down stop and the championship.

Although wide receiver Cooper Kupp also shone with a pair of touchdown catches, at minimum they should have shared the MVP honors.

Regardless, the 30-year-old defensive lineman has been the NFL's top defender for much of his career since the Rams selected him with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 draft. He's won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award three times, most recently in 2020.

He remained a force for L.A. in 2021, tallying 84 total tackles, 12.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and four passes defended while playing in all 17 regular season games. He added 3.5 sacks in the playoffs and earned a terrific 93.6 overall grade from Pro Football Focus.

In turn, Donald deserves the highest-paying contract among NFL defenders, though that label has a few meanings. Here are the various benchmarks he could target in negotiations, per Spotrac:

  • Total value: $141 million (Chicago Bears' Khalil Mack)
  • Average annual value: $28 million (Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt)
  • Guaranteed money: $80 million (Watt)
  • 2022 cash: $24.1 million (New Orleans Saints' Marshon Lattimore)
The University of Pittsburgh product sidestepped questions about his future during the Super Bowl postgame press conference. He told reporters:

Teams that win the Super Bowl frequently go through some significant roster changes before their title defense, as players who shone during the playoff run cash in via free agency. It likely won't be any different for the Rams, with several impact players set to hit the open market and their financial situation seeing them $10.1 million over the salary cap entering the offseason, per Spotrac.

Donald's retirement would be the single biggest blow the L.A. roster could receive during the offseason, though. He's simply irreplaceable.

In turn, the Rams front office is going to do everything in its power to convince him to continue his career, and a lucrative new contract will probably be part of those efforts.
All speculation but, I could see them giving him something special while reworking a contract to also give the team room for signing other players.

Agree.
He has a very high cap number in 2022. An extension should reduce it significantly in the short term.

IMO it's just the sports media spreading the rumor virus on the Rams.

Aaron knows very well what this Rams Org. did this past year to help bring Aaron the chance of winning another SB & getting a ring. Mission accomplished!

The NFL world knows too. I just do not see this type of behind-the-back crap behavior in Aaron.

I think he doesn't unequivocally say no, because its none of our damn business and he knows life happens sometimes. Doesn't want to be put in that box by media that made up shit. That's fair man, keep things like that on your own terms.

Logically it makes sense for both him and McVay.

Not that they're in cahoots, but if you're McVay and could make $18 million for ESPN as reported.....no brainer there.

Pay both please. Thanks!

There's a piece out there somewhere--don't remember where, would have to dig--highlighting contract re-structures that could free upwards of $50+ million for the cap just this year.

Exactly. There's not a single quote from Donald in the article or floating around the media that even hints at him saying he wants a new deal. Just shit-stirring by the author.

I don't think it takes much brain power to come up with the idea of paying your best player after a SB win. I also would not be surprised if the Rams do something with his contract. But all this speculation is a bit silly to me. Hell... the confetti is practically still coming down in SOFI.

I don't deal in guarantees but I GUARANTEE you that AD is in horns next season and looking for a repeat.

Just a writer creating a story that was never there. The writer is saying he deserves a raise. AD didn't bring it up. In fact he never quotes him.

Seems it should be a fairly simple restructure process for the Rams to trade increased guaranteed money up-front for a lower 2022/2023 CAP hit. Not only is Donald only going to be 31 years old next year with a few solid seasons still in front of him, but he deserves for the next few years that his salary remain guaranteed for his & his family's safety net.

It's simple, if AD wants a raise. Fuckin give it to him increase his number the next two years. He'll still be playing at a high level and worthy. Drop the number off at the tail of the deal.

Just another reason to have no respect for Rodney Harrison.

From Wikipedia. Quite the résumé:

Reputation[edit]

Harrison was voted the "dirtiest player" in the NFL by his peers according to a 2004 poll conducted by Sports Illustrated. In 2006, Harrison once again topped the "dirtiest player" voting by 361 other NFL players.[11] In 2008, NFL coaches awarded the title to Harrison in an anonymous poll conducted by ESPN.[12] He has also been fined and suspended multiple times, and as of 2002, had racked up over $200,000 in fines by the NFL. A notable suspension occurred in 2002 after a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Oakland Raiders' Jerry Rice.
