Thanks for posting; he comes across as a good kid, with a strong family support network behind him. I bet McVay was salivating listening to the answer to that last question.

I really hope he establishes himself as a good player here.

I hope he pans out. The 4.59 40 isn’t great for a kid his size and it remains to be seen how he deals with blocking requirements in McVay’s offense at his size……..but he made some great contested catches and out of frame catches. He’s got very good hands and short area quickness. He also seems to be a real student of the game. I’m sure that if he doesn’t pan out, it won’t be due to lack of effort.

Sounds like a McVay guy, for sure. That has to be one of the biggest determinates of succeeding as a physically limited late round guy: study, technique, and work. Someone to root for.

At his best when replacing Kupp- when Kupp was injured. Not, when Kupp was healthy.

I’m not buying the ‘McVay didn’t know what he was doing’ story. McVay is one of the best offensive minds in the game. He isn’t mistakenly going to play the wrong players, or have no idea what he has on the roster. If he chose to play Kupp over Atwell I’m sure he felt that was the best option he had.

I disagree because In a interview I seen they asked him about tutu and he said tutu should of been on the field more like us fans have said then said it was hard to get him on the field because of who was in front of him and he mentions that tutu played at his best when he replaced kupp when he was hurt …. I could understand it it from a blocking stand point but I think having tutu on the field more would have helped team more

Supposedly? He actually did supplant Tutu. Maybe this has something to do with Robinson’s DUI charges. Or it could simply be that they feel he is slowing down.

It’s a weak argument to pretend that Robinson didn’t take the third receiver job the last two years. Everyone knows he did.

He took it because tutu couldn’t play x like they envisioned … they wanted him to be like Brandon cooks … but yet in still Robinson had his moments with the tds but that’s mainly cause tutu was never in in the red zone … tutu was better in every other stat with way less opportunities and was graded as a better blocker… I’m not saying tutu had to be brought back but i think Robinson had to go me personally I thought they wasn’t going to resign neither and didn’t see a reason tutu would resign and as quick as he did without testing free agency just to see what other teams thought of him and how they would want to use him

Wasn't an argument, I agree he took the third receiving job. I used the term "supposedly" facetiously, it just doesn't come across in text format. Sorry for the confusion. I just don't see the logic to let someone like Robinson walk for a cheaper deal while replacing him for the receiver he beat out and giving that player a more expensive contract, all just to prove something to the league for next season. I feel McVay has more in mind for Tutu. It seems like we may have to agree to disagree, brotherman.

I think the inevitable 3 to possibly 6 game suspension for Robinson sealed his fate here.

Yeah, Tutu offers next to nothing in the redzone. Plus Adams will be in Demarcus Robinson’s spot. So Atwell won’t replace him.

I’ll never believe the notion that McVay didn’t know what he was doing. He always says it’s about playing his best players. If he felt Atwell was his one of his best 11 then he would have played more.

I don’t recall McVay ever saying anything negative about a player on the team either. So, taking what he says about players isn’t always a good measure to judge his intentions.

Tutu can’t block like Kupp. So, either McVay adjusts his scheme to not rely on Atwell blocking as much as Kupp or he switches to more 12 personnel. I think a lot of it depends on who blocks the best among the three tight ends, not named Higbee, and Atwell/Whittington. Because without Kupp level blocking the run game will suffer a bit. I don’t think McVay wants that to happen.

Otherwise, maybe he thinks Atwell’s speed draws the defense back, but why won’t the defenses just go back to what they did in the past and get hands on him?

I won’t be surprised if the offense starts a bit more with Tutu early in the season but eventually evolves into a lot of 12 personnel or Whittington taking over ahead of Atwell because he’s a more physical option. If they were building an offense to feature Atwell’s skillset more, then it would have been a three year deal.

They knew he was a small dude when they drafted him, why spend a 2nd rd pick on him if they didn't think they he could hold up a full season? Why wait til season 4 to show case him just to prove to the league if he can last as a starter, and if he can, why let him go?? Your basically saying they are paying him 10 mil to see if he can last a season...what have they been doing the last 3 when they had him on the cheap??

They were playing cooper kupp instead. Kupp is gone and Atwell is in. They lose an excellent blocker and technically smart player. They gain a faster, healthier player who also has good hands.

Instead we have a Defensive Rookie of the Year. My point being, you can't have everything. Even when they try to trade up, sometimes the asking price is to high or no one wants too. When things fall thru you have to go in a different direction. That is what the Rams do. Even when they got OBJ and would have signed him long term, he got injured. So like most gripes, they don't always take into account the total picture. If they got the Receiver they tried to get in the draft thru Carolina, we wouldn't have 2 #1 draft picks and a possible chance at a young Francise QB.

I'll also point out that Robinson left for a 6 mil guaranteed contract, totalling 9.5 for 2 yrs. Tutu makes more than that plus 5 mil in incentives, so possibly 15 mil total for 1 yr and then "out the door"? Why let the guy who supposedly subplanted Tutu go for a smaller contract, but sign a guy to a more expensive "prove it" deal, just to let him walk the following year? There's got to be more to it. I could be wrong, but it just doesn't make sense otherwise.

I think they see Robinson starting to slide. Plus, Davante Adams is Robinson’s upgrade and will play his position. Paying Demarcus makes no sense once Robinson is a part of the plan.

The biggest question is how does Tutu replace Kupp? Maybe they move Puka to Kupp’s position but I think he’s best as is. So, do they ask Tutu to block like Kupp? Or do they plan to ease Ferguson or Whittington into that short underneath role?

It’s going to be interesting to see how it evolves over the course of the season. But, a one year deal makes it seem unlikely that Tutu is in the long term plans as a feature of the offense. Who knows though. Maybe he plays well enough to get an extension.

Is that by choice or circumstance?

They didn’t have a first round pick for several years. So that took the Rams out of the running for a size/speed/athleticism receiver in a few good, and recent, receiver drafts. Also, at times they had a few very good receivers in their peak years, like Woods, Kupp, Cooks. Was there really a need for an early round one receiver?

Then they had Puka and Kupp, who if both healthy had first round production. If McVay got his way last winter then he would have signed Mike Evans to that group. He later tried to trade for Courtland Sutton to be his red zone threat. That would have been another very good group similar to Woods, Kupp, OBJ.

This year they signed Davante Adams to pair with Nacua AND. tried to trade up to draft Tet McMillan in round 1, according to reports. So he tried to draft the type of receiver you’d like them to.

As receiving groups go, I think he’s done pretty well, or at least like last year he had a good plan to have a very good receiver group in place once again. A Jamar Chase would be a sweet addition but those types usually get picked early. Plus they break the cap when it’s time to get paid.
