He has an agent so he cant go back and play in college
Strange indeed
I just read about this in an article this morning. The article stated he is already back practicing with his college. The article also said that if he stays in college, he can reenter the draft next year.

Do you or anyone know how that works? Do the Bengals just lose this pick if a kid declines the draft and stays in college? That's kind of scary in the Bengals are just out of luck and lose a pick in this case.

Ever see Bo Jackson in a Bucs uni?
Haven't seen anything changing the rules since then - the team loses the pic if it doesn't sign the draftee.

According to Chris Howard; director of the NCAA...in a letter dated 2023 said this

"
"If you are three years removed from your high school graduation date, you may enter the NFL Draft one time during your collegiate career without jeopardizing your eligibility; provided you are not drafted by any team and you declare your intention to resume intercollegiate participation within 72 hours following the NFL's draft declaration date.

"Student-athletes who enter the NFL Draft early are required to sign and have notarized a petition for special eligibility with the NFL, which renounces all remaining collegiate eligibility unless revoked within 72 hours of the draft declaration date."

I don't know if this is correct though.

I’m admittedly down on Miller based on the way he handled his departure from the Rams. I’m a homer and I wanted him to stay but understood money motivates. I just think his handling was immature and not a good decision for him.
100%
Could Not Agree More!

Do you remember how there was a camera crew following Miller on his little free agency tour in 2022; and, when it came down to Buffalo or re-signing with the Rams, Miller called his father for advice ...

The quote was: 'What should I do Daddy?' His father answered that he should take the most money.

How about Dad saying something like ...
Son ... you have had a great career and made a ton of money. Play where you would be the happiest. No one can answer that but you Son ... Oh! and by-the-way ... act like a fucking adult and make your own decision!!!

I thought that once a guy declared for the draft and/or hired an agent, he wasnt eligible to play in college
Maybe I'm just confusing sports

NFL First Round Pick Returns to College Amid Contract Dispute

Story by RotoBaller
2 min read

Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick defensive end Shemar Stewart has yet to sign his rookie contract and is in danger of missing the team’s training camp.

Earlier in the offseason, the 17th overall pick in this year’s draft skipped their mandatory minicamp and did not participate in any offseason workouts as he was in dispute over the language within their proposed rookie contract.

However, on Wednesday, the defensive end returned to Texas A&M to train, which suggests he could be eyeing a return to college football. Stewart has reportedly been training with the Aggies several times throughout the summer and could be laying the foundation to return to school for another season. If he were to choose this route, he would re-enter the NFL Draft in 2026. Stewart was viewed as a raw prospect upon graduating from school. In his junior collegiate season in 2024, Stewart tallied just 1.5 sacks with 31 tackles (14 solo) across 12 games. He also logged a career-high six tackles-for-loss.

This situation could have significant implications for the Cincinnati defense, as their star defensive end, Trey Hendrickson, is also in a contract dispute. Hendrickson also skipped the team’s mandatory minicamp but has recently resumed conversations, which could allow both sides to get a deal done shortly after training camp begins.

This situation is worth keeping a close eye on, as the Bengals missed the postseason last year primarily due to their defense, which was near the bottom of the league. In 2024, the Bengals allowed the eighth-most total yards per game and the seventh-most points per game.

Even though they have one of the best offensive units led by Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, a defense without Stewart and Hendrickson could have them missing the playoffs for the second-straight season.

This is great, Bengals can keep bumbling around with one of the (thee?) worst front office and owner combo in the league... Joe Burrow gets fed up after another year or two of this and demands to be traded... Rams trade for Burrow when Stafford retires... continue winning super bowls.

Very strange indeed. I see a bunch of articles about this concept, I guess it was a hot topic when Sheduer Sanders was dropping like a rock. From what I gather, Stewart would have to sue in order to re-gain eligibility, he is clearly not eligible as it currently stands.
If he hired an agent, I dont see how he gets around that though
Alas, as much as I dislike the Bengals FO, his reason for not signing is not a hill worth dying on and is a red flag

A while ago, earlier this year, I read about the possibility of Burrow ending up a Ram when Stafford ends it. From what I recall, it is a real possibility that Burrow heads to LA down the road, if the Rams want him.

I think part of that equation is the Bengals have to continue to struggle and miss the playoffs, which seems to be the path they are on now.

I dont think there was ever a realistic scenario that the Bengals would move on from him, but if there was the slightest chance, it was certainly washed away after the Bengals kept his favorite toys, Chase and Higgins around

I looked this up on line. AI generated this response....

AI Overview

Once an NFL-eligible player declares for the NFL Draft, they immediately lose their remaining college eligibility, regardless of whether they are drafted. This means they cannot return to play college football, even if they are not drafted. The NCAA rules prohibit players from returning to play college football after declaring for the NFL Draft.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Declaration and Loss of Eligibility:
When a player declares for the NFL Draft, they are effectively ending their college football career.

  • No Return:
Unlike some other professional sports leagues, once a player declares for the NFL Draft, they cannot return to college football, even if they go undrafted.

  • NCAA Rules:
The NCAA prohibits players who have declared for the NFL Draft from returning to play college football, even if they are not drafted.

  • Underclassmen:
Underclassmen can apply for special eligibility to enter the draft early, but doing so forfeits their remaining college eligibility.
  • Bo Jackson Example:
The case of Bo Jackson highlights this rule. He declared for the NFL Draft and then played baseball, losing his remaining college baseball eligibility in the process.

College players didn’t get paid over the table a few years ago too. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s let back in:
I would. Had this happened after the draft it's one thing but this late in the game is setting a precedent that isnt good.
My question for Stewart is why is he so concerned about being a good citizen that he feels his guaranteed money is at risk? Everyone jumping on the Bengals but if you look at what the Bengals are looking for, its really no big deal and a very odd hill for Stewart to die on

The Bengals contract offer is very different from the other 1st round offers from a structural standpoint and I understand that they’re the first team to really push this.

Iirc, the structure is really bad for players and the NFLPA would actually be willing to sue if he signed it because it’s so bad.

"Bengals want to do would be similar to the Los Angeles Rams insisting on offsets for the guarantees with their 2026 first-round pick to conform with the rest of the NFL when their previous first-round picks haven't had offsets. Practically every team, besides the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Rams, has offsets for the guarantees with draft picks. The proposed change surely would be a sticking point for the agent of that Rams first-round pick. The agent wouldn't want to be responsible for a new team contract precedent that would apply to other Rams first-round picks in the future."

I mean, Rams fans should be the last ones criticizing the Bengals for wanting this off set language in the contract

Lions HC Dan Campbell confirmed DT Levi Onwuzurike suffered a torn ACL, ending his season.

In 2024, Onwuzurike played in 16 games with 10 starts and was in on 61% of the defensive snaps.

That's a significant loss before training camp even opens.
