Yeah, that makes no sense at all.

By that logic the Rams should be able to trade Derion Kendrick for a starting NT
The Raiders ran a LOT of 12 personnel last season. Mayer was in 41% of snaps. Raiders probably running a lot less 12 next season under Chip Kelly so his snap count will plummet behind Bowers.

Mayer has borderline starting qualities for a TE and he's halfway through his rookie deal, but definitely not living up to his pre-draft hype.

I'd trade Kupp for him in a heartbeat.

I wouldn’t

I'd ask for a draft pick in addition IMO. They NEED Kupp.

I get it. Neither are stars and Kupp has emotional ties and he is a little more valuable.

But we would save $30m in cap space over the next two seasons trading them straight across.
The Rams still take on a lot of dead money on the cap. That makes swapping a player of Kupp’s caliber, for a lesser player not worth it.

Next season on the other hand makes more sense. But I’m not a fan of Mayer. He’s not much of an upgrade from Allen.

Allen was bottom tier last season, ranked 72nd out of 74 graded TE's by PFF. Mayer was mid-tier.

Given that Mayer is on a rookie contract, he probably has more trade value than Kupp with his $30m salary.
I hate to say you’re right, but, you’re right. But I wonder how much need might level it out a bit.

It depends on the situation. The 17th best number two TE should never factor into the cap that much anyway.

In this situation I’d be looking at player value on the field over cap because they may not even be getting league average starter level play from Mayer

Still not worth a straight up trade for Kupp. Middle of the road at 49 is at best the 17th best number 2 tight end.
By that measure, Kupp (at 51) would have been the 19th best WR2 last season.

In his first six seasons, two were stellar and four were very good. The last two have been average. I love the memories, but he's being paid way too much to be average.

What? Most teams deploy two Wide Receivers at all times. Many play three. But the second Tight end in most offenses is a part time player. So you are comparing a part time player to a starter? You value a part time player over a starting player?

Cap is always a big factor. That's the reality. In fact, it's the only reason Kupp is being traded.

Mayer was targetted 32 times to Kupp being targetted 100 times. Are they really equal value to an offense?
