Maybe the question is why the Rams don't do what Philly does and go out and sign some vets to "cheap" "prove it" contracts?

Philly did it this year with:

Baun (now the #1 rated LB in the league) - cap number $1.6mil this year - free agent
Becton (14th of 72 rated G in the league) - cap number $2mil this year - free agent
Barkley (obvious what he's meant) - cap numbers (3.8, 6.3 and 10mil in '24, '25 and '26)

Washington did it with:

Bobby Wagner (2nd rated LB in the league) - cap number $6.5mil this year - free agent

Detroit with:

Kevin Zeitler (2nd rated G in the league) - cap number $6mil this year - free agent
(basically they traded JJ for Zeitler and saved 7.7mil in cap space, oh and got the 2nd rated G while we got the 64th)

Others:

Poona Ford (5th rated DL in the league) - cap number $1.8mil this year - free agent
Calais Campbell (7th rated DL in the league) - cap number $2mil this year - free agent

With the 13.7 cap hit $ the Rams gave Jonah Jackson, they could have signed:

- the #1 rated LB in the league (Baun / 1.6mil)
- the #14 rated G in the league (Becton / 2mil)
- the #8 rated RB in the league (Barkley / 3.8) I know 3 year deal, but 3.8 this year
- the #5 rated DL in the league (Ford / 1.8mil) or - the #7 rated DL in the league (Campbell / 2mil)
- the number 28 rated T in the league (Lucas / 2.8mil) great backup when Havs / AJ are out instead of Boom/ Mc
AND . . .
- the #5 rated TE in the league (Jonnu Smith / 2.1mil)

There are a lot of others . . .
And we can find several cases where it didn’t work out like White for us. I don’t think it means we didn’t try NOR that our regime is somehow bad at their job. You hit some and you miss some. You also can’t look at what one team did and assume it works with our personnel.

Nobody seems to want to answer me asking earlier so I'll try again. Why are we trying to make BY something he's never been before?
Because I think he is limited as an edge rusher. A one trick pony speed rusher, who against top OTs, disappears. As a result our pass rush doesn't seem to cause much havoc against top offenses. That's an issue if you want this team to be elite.

Will that suffice as an answer?

Then trade him to a team that wants an edge. He isn't and to the best of my knowledge never has been an ILB. Draft an ILB don't try to put a round peg in a square hole.

Not sure how you can he say can't do it. Maybe he can't, but his build is a perfect fit for the position at 6-2 250, so it would come down to whether he has the instincts to do it. Neither of us really know the answer to that.
Maybe he can do it, maybe he can't. That is indeed an unknown.

But don't position changes fail like 80% of the time? They don't have a high success rate. That is known.

Trying to eliminate needing 2 draft picks.

Hey, maybe he can't play inside, then fine. Just saying it would be an interesting experiment and worth a look.

I don't see a need to move on from him but that's just me. All we need up front is a big old pretty boy NT like @Loyal and another ILB. No need to mess with the other 4 starters.

Don't know about a percentage but yeah they aren't always good.

Wrong again. I made zero assumptions.

You quoted me from a reply to a post that suggested BY might be able to play ILB. And where I acknowledged that if we were to replace him at Edge then I would not be averse to it.

But carry on with whatever it is you're doing here. It's entertaining.
You responded to a post arguing that Young can move inside saying that you're not opposed to it. I said I'd be averse to that because he doesn't have the skillset for it. So what exactly is it that you're arguing if not that Young has the skillset to move inside? LOL.

I read an article where the guy says the Rams should trade for Sauce Gardner. He said it’s reminiscent of trading for the disgruntled Ramsey when the team has only a few glaring needs. Gardner has made some suggestions that he may prefer to leave the Jets. Gardner has two years on his contract. I’m guessing it takes at least a first round pick+ to acquire him.

If Stafford gets back on track in the playoffs and the Rams can sign a decent receiver in free agency, maybe Sauce Gardner is a solution for the Rams secondary.
If we can afford to sign a free agent WR and take on Gardner's salary, why not just sign a free agent WR and CB1 such as D.J. Reed and save the draft pick?

I guess I look at it as how does a 10/11 win team become a 14 win team? Outside pass rush is one area.

Verse is more of a strong side end. I am not sure he will ever be a 11-12 sack guy. And I don't see Young as an elite speed end with bend to consistently get to the QB.
However, IF, and yes its an IF.... if he could do it, his speed & size at inside LB could be special.

Lateral agility and instincts. He's explosive, strong, and very fast in a straight line. If he had the agility to play ILB, he'd be a top-notch pass rusher. It's one of the big holes in his skillset.

By adding a run stuffing DT an ILB to go along with Speights maybe even upgrade him and add a CB1 and another CB. Rams pass rush is fine and the run defense from the front 7 improved over the year.

This isn't at just you and it isn't about just Young but there's a lot of "what if" moving players around on this forum. Young isn't a problem.

Funniest thing about the bolded part is some people asked the same thing about AJ at LT. He can be upgraded but the push back from that though was amazing and that's not even wanting to move him to another position just upgrade him.

I agree that adding more outside pass rush on Young's side would be ideal. Don't know that it's a need but that would be a way to make a dominant defense.

But even if they found a better weakside edge in the draft, BY would be great rotational depth. I'd rather see that than trying to force him into ILB.

Not arguing either way. I'm not sold on Young playing ILB by any stretch. But I think Young is a good all around athlete who might be able to do the job on the interior on say run downs. So if they were to replace him what's the harm in giving him a look there.

Not so sure about this.
