It has been recently reported that the Falcons saw penix as the #2 QB in the draft. Right or wrong, that’s how they felt. When he dropped to them, they felt they had to do it. I get that, but what becomes interesting is “now what?”
I’m sure their draft board wasn’t built around getting penix, but they did nab defensive players the next 4 picks. IMO, this draft works IF penix starts sooner than later (because the falcons were right about penix), the defense noticeably improves, and eating the $$ they paid for cousins doesn’t prevent them from pursuing/retaining good players. This is not as catastrophic as some make it out to be.
As for the possibility of penix being a bust, you’re 100% correct. The odds are against him and every other QB drafted this year. There’s just no way all of these teams are right. I will say though, he’s not in as bad of a situation as some. He’s got a good run game and OL.
Williams is in the best spot to have success if he doesn’t have a horrible rookie season. They brought in a lotta talent for him. McCarthy is in about the best spot he can be with an excellent offensive-minded HC and about the best WR in the conference.
Daniels is in a good spot as far as roster, but I just don’t see him making the transition to the pros as smoothly as some—just my opinion. Maye, IMO, would have a great chance if he sits a year while the cheats build a roster and if their HC turns out to be good.
…but what do I know?
