Games on Sunday

Fans, it looks like the first Rams game will bot air locally here in Springfield Mo u until November 6th. I will have two nationally televised games before then (week 1 and week 7). Does anyone know a good mobile site that I can see the games live for free??? Firstrow will not work on my phone.

Rams preseason game one defenses

Something I noticed on the rams defensive struggles this past week.

Since fisher has been our head coach:
2012 Preseason week 1:
Andrew Luck- 10/16 188 yards and 2 td's
2013 preseason week 1:
Brannon weeden- 10/13 112 yards and a td
2014 preseason week 1:
Luke McCown - 7/10 49 yards and an interception
2015 preseason week 1:
Derrick carr - 6/9 43 yards and an interception

Shredded by luck
Shredded by weeden
Held McCown on check but he completedid 7/10
Held carr in check but he completed 6/9 and was intercepted at the goal line.
Just another reason not to worry about week one of the preseason. The defense looked shaky but I think Greg Williams will have them ready to play week 1

Do you think the nfl has become corrupt as a cartel?

Don't know about that, but they certainly are all about the m-o-n-e-y

giphy.gif

-----------
Sloppy play, stupid penalties, horrible special teams.....the Rams are in mid-season form!!!

And Coty Sensabaugh...boy does he look like a sleeper when he is playing.

To top it all off, Fisher just may have manufactured the start of a QB controversy by showing off his first pick and then having Mannion win the game.

giphy.gif

Actually the Rams had only 2 penalties, and as Fisher pointed out _ I'm sure with some pride _ that was a league low in Week 1 of the preseason. Yeah Sensabaugh struggled. So did Joyner. Cornerback could be an issue. We'll see what happens with E.J. Gaines apparently playing this week vs. KC.
----------
Will Saffold stay at RT or move back to LG when the WI tackle returns?

I would think Saffold goes back to left tackle once Havenstein returns.

(Say what? Saffold will replace Robinson?) :shocking:
----------------
The guy who made the accusations about NFL players and PEDs for the Al Jazeera report eventually recanted his claims. So why is the league demanding that Matthews, Peppers, Harrison and others "talk" about PED use and threatening them with suspension if they don't? Seriously, what's going on here?

Because the league can. I think this will be a major point of emphasis when the next round of negotiations come around in the collective bargaining agreement. Just how much leeway the NFL office is given in such matters and obviously the status of Goodell as both jury and executioner. But the CBA doesn't expire for another 5 years.

roger-goodell1.jpg

--------------
Do the NFL owners care about issues of how much power Goodell has to decide punishments? In negotiating the next CBA, what will the players have to give up to rest this power from Goodell, that only effects a few players?

I think the owners probably like Goodell having the power. As for next CBA, that's an interesting question. Are the players willing to give up dollars across the board to change the disciplinary system? Again we have 5 years to wait before the CBA.
-----------
Did you see Hard Knocks, yet? Is "This is some 7-9 b*******" the new "Same Old Sorry A** Rams"?

brng.gif

You know I haven't. I've been on the road a lot lately, between Hall of Fame weekend and visiting camps. I'm actually in St. Joseph, Mo. right now finishing up a two-day visit to Chiefs camp.
-----------
BWAHAHA! Nice kickoff coverage!! Same 'ol Rams!

What do you think is behind their desire to extend Fisher and Snead? Stability in an otherwise unstable situation?

It was ridiculously easy, I'll say that.

ape-judging.gif

------------
What are the chances St. Louis gets the best games on TV instead of the Rams and Chiefs game every week?

It depends on the ratings. Think about this: the Bears play the Chiefs in the preseason I believe in Week 3. You'll have your choice of KTVI or KMOV in St. Louis to watch that game!
----------
Did you get to see the Dallas preseason game? How do you think LT Robinson looked? Has he finally arrived?

I've only been able to watch the first half so far. Yeah, Robinson looked good in his couple of series. That's better than the alternative, but it's hard to say he's arrived after just a handful of plays.
----------
Very strong showing game 1 support wise. Nearly 90,000 in the house. Go RAMS

good-day.gif

It was very impressive, no doubt. There were a lot of Cowboys fans in the stands however.

a-lighten-up-funny-quotes-300x210.jpg

-----------
You can doubt me all you want about 90% Ram's fans. But I spent a couple of hours out in the parking lots at the tailgate parties. Also walked around the concourse. While it was easy to spot a Cowboy fan, the Ram's fans outnumbered them greatly.

Hey, I wasn't there. But I know what I saw from the crowd shots.

giphy.gif

-----------
I read somewhere that a couple of months ago the rams tried to keep the "missouri labor law" language in players' contracts to save a few bucks. Seems like Kroenke does like Missouri, somewhat.

Yes, this came out early in the free agency period. The Rams I believe have since adjusted the language.
----------
How do you feel about Dallas 1st and 2nd stringers putting a beating on the 3-13 Lambs?

goys.gif

Case Keenum looked pretty good, doing what he does. Short efficient passes. Mobility in the pocket. Benny Cunningham looked good _ I've always liked him and thought he should get the ball more. But the play of the secondary, particularly at cornerback, wasn't very good. Three drops by receivers in the first half. Some troubles with blitz pickup.

The way I've always approached preseason is to pay attention to the score when the regulars are in _ but watch particular players and don't pay attention to the score once you're using the third_ and fourth_ stringers. So with that in mind
-----------
I thought Ogletree was a little weak on run support. What did you see?

I didn't notice that. But that's not to say I'm disputing what you're saying _ I guess I was looking at other things.
----------
Jim, if you want to get that interview with Kroenke, do the thing you did on the "2 Bens" video: Stand by the side of the road (in this case, the Pacific Coast Highway) with your thumb out and see if Stan picks you up like Ben Frederickson did.

After all, the LA Times wrote a dreamy account over the weekend of how Stan likes to make the drive in his SUV down Hwy. 1 to the Coliseum and daydream about how he singlehandedly is altering the sports and entertainment landscape of La-La Land. I almost threw up on my keyboard reading it. Sam Farmer wrote it, and I'm wondering: When did he leave the Times to join Kroenke's payroll?

200.gif

I have saved that sign. Maybe I can put it to use again. I did notice Stan down on the field in the first half on Saturday. I can never recall Stan on the sidelines in a game in St. Louis.
-----------
Why did EJ not play against the Cowboys?

I believe it's a hamstring. He returned to practice Monday and is expected to play this week vs. KC.
-----------
Jim, what is our parade meter in St. Louis for the Rams? Maybe 12 or 13 losses?

I currently have them in the 5-11, 6-10 range, but reserve the right to change that through the end of the preseason.

wrong.gif

----------
JT....thanks for the chats in what will soon be an NFL desert. Will you keep these up once the LA Ram fans abandon this forum in the near future? Seems like Bonsignore and Farmer are no match for your insights and expertise. Cheers, amigo!

We will keep these chats going as long as there are questions, be they Rams questions or questions about the rest of the league.
----------
After seeing what the NFL did to St. Louis do you see San Diego or Oakland keeping their teams after this season?

The difference between St. Louis as opposed to Oakland or San Diego is that the owners in Oak and SD would rather keep their teams there with a new stadium. Obviously that wasn't the case in St. Louis. With nothing happening in Oakland, it looks like Mark Davis is genuinely intrigued with Las Vegas. As for San Diego, it's going to be tough to get that voter approval for the stadium in November.

Las_Vegas_Raiders.jpg

----------
I know it's a LONG shot - however, will you be keeping an eye on the situation down in Jacksonville to see how they are doing, both on and off the field, as they seem to be the one team - if any - that could possibly/eventually move to the Lou??

Interesting that you bring this up. I think as long as London is in play, Shad Khan might be interested in moving there. Once London is out of play _ and logistically, I still can't see a team working out there _ then I think he just might think about St. Louis. but I don't think that's anything that will happen in the near future. I just don't see Jacksonville being an NFL market long-term.

UKJags_original.png

----------
With regard to London, do you think the NFL will determine on their own that having a team in London is logistically impossible? Or do you think that it will take the Jaguars moving there before the league realizes that this isn't going to work?

I think the league would have to decide that a team would work in London before anyone moves there.
-----------
Speaking of Jacksonville...why don't you cover a couple of their games. Get with Khan and talk a little. You might be able to show him the love of the Lou again. He would be a rock star to come here as well as you bringing him here. Think about it Jim. You would have a statue outside that beautiful RF stadium that didn't happen.

I think there should be that statue of Warner handing off to Faulk in front of the dome, the one the guy proposed many years ago.
-----------
GOOD TO SEE THE RAMS BACK IN L.A. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST WEAKNESS ON THE TEAM AND CAN IT BE FIXED?

Wide receiver; doubtful it can be fixed with this group. Overall quarterback play; may not happen this year. Cornerback; maybe a healthy Gaines can shore up.
------------
Jim as time goes on and let's say you decide to retire. How about a week before your retirement you write an article on how you really feel about Stan and don't hold back. I mean not just what he did to us but what he's doing in Texas. This guy has no soul.

He is a cold, cold businessman, there's no doubt.

sour-grapes-1.png

------------
Jim, overall impressions on the Rams after the first preseason game?

I've expressed some of that in earlier answers. As a general rule, I try not to overreact based on what I see in the preseason. Teams usually get out of each preseason game what they put into it. By that I mean, are you vanilla in approach? Are you blitzing a lot on defense? Are you using some of your favorite plays _ the good stuff, so to speak _ on offense? Etc. And who's on the field at specific moments in the game.

For example, the Chiefs were very much in control against Seattle in their preseason game, up 16-6 late in the fourth quarter They played 5 QBs in the game _ something you never see. Then the Seahawks get a field goal and a TD (followed by a game-winning 2-point conversion) to win the game with players on the field that won't be there in September.

So I don't think you necessarily say, wow, what a great comeback by Seattle. I think it's more, man KC's frontline talent looks pretty good. And I think a little of that is at work in the Rams-Cowboys contest.
-----------
To say that your story on DGB's issues was timely would be a classic understatement!

Timing is everything in this business. Nonetheless, I was surprised that he was gone, what, 2 days after the article.
------------
What do you think the penalty would be if Goff was the one caught with a girl in the room?

051418fb329d5c7222040b0f6c765d27e86851.jpg

A slap on the wrist.
-----------
Wow, I did watch installment of HardKnocks. 2nd Ep. airs tonight. 1st episode scoffed at STL as an NFL city and emphasized the triumph of the NFL returning to LA. My take anyway. When it came to analysis of the Rams football, not so gratifying. Show truly zoned on team's inadequacies.

Is it really true that Goff hasn't taken a snap under center in all of his High School and collegiate career. Show deftly pointed out how much difficulty he was having with that, and calling plays. Well as discouraging as it was, I was glad to watch 1st episode. Even if i suppressed a lot of laughs along the way.

Goff isn't the Lone Ranger when it comes to not having snaps under center prior to the pros.. Lots of high school teams and most college teams operate out of the shotgun. It is a big change playing in a pro-style offense. Again, I haven't watched the Hard Knocks yet. I guess I'll have two episodes to catch up on when I get back to StL.

I did think the "open" to the Rams-Cowboys game on ESPN was interesting. This syrupy homage to the history and tradition of the Rams franchise, and not one mention of the Greatest Show on Turf in St. Louis. I guess the plan _ and this certainly seems to be the case with the Rams organization itself _ is to pretend like St. Louis never happened.
------------
Went to the game on Saturday. Why didn't the refs call the blatant holding and blocks in the back by Dallas on the opening kick? Have to say, it was a great experience. There were a lot of Cowboys, but I'd say at least 90% were Ram's fans.

Hey, the refs are in preseason mode as well. As for 90% being Rams fans, I'm kind of doubting you there. In fact, when the Cowboys were moving in for the field goal to make it 24-7 before the half, I could hear chants of "Let's go, Cow-boys!" on the TV copy I was watching.

giphy.gif

giphy.gif

----------
How have the Rams changed (on the field) in the past 5 years? Goff may have a worse career than SB, WR is still a ?, OL is about the same, Gurley is good, but so was SJ39, D Line is good. Has there been much improvement anywhere?

giphy.gif

That's the whole point. It's as if the team has been running in place since 2012. Of course, if Goff is the real deal, that changes the dynamic.
------------
Jim - any predictions on how the TV ratings shape up locally? Personally I'm fine if the local stations play either the Bears, Rams, or Chiefs on a weekly basis. I can adjust to rooting for a different team. But I don't see how I'll remain interested in the NFL with the different team each week platform.

I think the Chiefs ratings might be better than the Bears, simply because the Chiefs are the better team right now. I can't predict what will happen once the regular season starts though in terms of what games are shown. Again, if the Rams rating are good, we may see a lot of Rams games on FOX
----------
Will the Chiefs first string D see Goff this weekend?

Depends on when Goff is in the game. Conversely, I wonder if the Rams' first-string defense will see Nick Foles.
---------
Jim, what's the Official Line on Sean Mannion? Is he destined to be the perennial clipboard-carrier or does he have a chance of getting under center some time this season?

Well, if he keeps throwing for what was it, three TD passes in the preseason, he'll be more than carrying a clipboard.
----------
I think Goff got some unfair bashing considering all the dropped passes, especially the one by Cooper. What did you think of Nelson Spruce?

applause.gif

Well, the pass to Cooper was a fine throw. I haven't watched the second half of the preseason game yet, so I can't really give you an opinion on Spruce, although I've always been a big believer in guys with good college production.
----------
regarding Goff, I thought he made some good throws, some dropped by receivers (go figure huh), but his footwork was something to be desired and he held the ball too long on his last sack. Just didnt seem like a #1 overall pick. What do you think about his performance Jim?

Don't want to make sweeping generalizations based on a few plays. It's pretty clear, though, that he's still in the thinking stage. And taking snaps under center is obviously an adjustment.
----------
I feel like the Rams have once again hurt themselves with their roster by going all in on Goff - wouldn't a top WR at pick #15 then a trade up for Paxton Lynch made more sense? I guess I don't really have a question....I'm just glad to be looking for a new team to root for.....

I liked Lynch a lot coming out. Fisher doesn't like to take receivers high in the draft.
----------
I hate all 32 NFL teams, and don't watch or read about them, but I like your stories about the Rams doing something stupid or the NFL being jerks. Please keep writing those.

baboo-o.gif

Well thank you
------------
Has the NFL announced the actual relocation fee that Stan had to pay? I heard rumors of $500M, but never heard the actual amount.

Yeah, I think that's been decided, and it was either $500M or $550M. But he gets to pay it off on a long-term basis, which shouldn't be a problem for Malibu Stan.
----------
What do you make of the low TV ratings in STL and LA for the Rams?

I didn't see the numbers. But it is the preseason.
----------
Fisher & Snead extensions? It is good to see that Kroenke still doesn't care about winning and that being in L.A. didn't change that.

It is a little mind-boggling. The rest of the league doesn't operate this way, that's for sure.

BnKfLowCAAAOK1r.jpg

-----------
Since the NFL has basically given the middle finger to anything that has to do with St. Louis Rams do you think the former St. Louis players will have a harder time making the Hall of Fame?

Bernie Miklasz does a tremendous job advocating St. Louis players. I think Warner gets in this time around. But I am concerned that the lack of a team in St. Louis will hurt players such as Bruce and Holt.
------------
Why do you suppose la ram fans still come to STL sites for nfl news? You are a major league talent, but wouldn't you think in the media capital of the world, you would have an insane amount of rams coverage? Or, is the rams return really not that big of a deal to the majority of la?

My sense is as time goes on, more LA Rams fans will be getting more of their Rams fix from the LA market. For the short term, however, they're just tapping into 21 years of perspective covering the team.
---------
Where did St. Louis rank as far as cost for a family of four to attend a game? What are your odds that the LA experience will be in the top 5 most expensive for the next few years.

St. Louis usually ranked somewhere around the bottom of the third quartile to the top of the fourth. I don't think the cost of watching the LA Rams will really skyrocket until they start playing in Inglewood.
-------------
Do you think Fisher has taken the Rams as far as he can go? It just seems like it is the same problems year after year.

giphy.gif

Sure seems that way. And once again, it's one of the youngest teams in the league.
-----------
I will be interested to see how Jenkins does in NY this year. He was good but not worth what they paid.

Well, teams had a lot of cap room this offseason, that's why there was so much money being thrown around. In that regard, I think the Rams miscalculated the market and should've tried to get Jenkins signed last year at this time if they really wanted him. Jenkins had a pretty thin skin when it came to criticism. Be interesting to see how he handles that on the big media stage of NYC.
----------
I actually watched the game Saturday after telling myself all off season that I was done with the NFL. But, I was curious and wanted to see LA's reaction to the team.

As I was watching, I found myself having mixed emotions. I still hate Stank and Demoff and am appalled and disgusted with the way the whole relocation was handled. But, I definitely could feel for the LA fans and them getting the Rams back. They were out in full force and I'm sure the players will appreciate playing for an energized fan base.

Also, I know the Coliseum is supposedly a dump, but it looked pretty good on TV. I couldn't help but feel that they probably never should have left LA. It made we wonder how I would feel if the Big Red would move back to the Lou after all these years, and I'm sure I would feel similar to the LA Rams fans.

So, I hope they enjoy having their team back and that maybe both cities can move past the LA Vs. STL thing. Because, in all honesty neither fan base is too blame, just the insatiable greed of the owners.

I guess I don't really have a question for you, I'm just surprised

Chuck_Norris_Approves.gif

A sane, logical, empathetic, thoughtful, and heartfelt response. What are you doing in this chat? But I do feel for the fans. They are mere pawns in all this.

One Picture to Show Easley's Talent

s3r0uYV.jpg

Found in the comment section of the Rams subreddit thread on Longacre.

https://m.reddit.com/r/LosAngelesRa...matt_longacre_highlights_from_ps_wk1_spoiler/

http://i.imgur.com/s3r0uYV.jpg

Easley has an insane first step and reaction time.

When people were saying it was comparable to Aaron Donald's first step, some were dismissive and almost offended at the idea, but that was due to misinterpretation. No one is saying Easley is AD level good as an all around player, but that they are comparable in this certain trait.

The point is, Easley has great natural ability and it doesn't look like his injuries have taken much out of him. Now he just needs to stay healthy and he'll produce some splash plays every week.

James laurinaitis "Do You Miss Me Yet?"

According to official stats, Ogletree played 12 snaps against Dallas and recorded two tackles. He described his personal performance as “pretty good” but critiqued himself for not doing a better job of organizing his teammates pre-snap, which he said left them out of position on run defense.
“We just weren’t getting lined up like we were supposed to and we weren’t being physical enough for our
style of defense,” Ogletree said. “It’s definitely all correctable. We’re going to nip it in the bud quick.”

Given that middle linebacker is considered the unofficial “captain” position of the defense, Ogletree said he took responsibility for making sure the Rams’ didn’t get caught out of position.

“It definitely falls on me,” Ogletree said. “I talk to the guys and show them the pictures, show them what we’re supposed to be doing. They definitely listen to what I say and they take pride in what they do, but we’ve definitely got to start off on the right foot, and that’s getting lined up.” http://www.ocregister.com/articles/rams-725896-fisher-defense.html

Here were our biggest positional questions pre camp, I think...

This might be a good thread for stimulating discussion as we wait for the Chief game.

And in no particular order, btw.

QB. Keenum or Goff to start? Can Mannion justify a roster spot? All 3 are looking good, so far. Maybe even quite a bit better than expected after 1 preseason game.

RB. Will Mason be missed? Cunningham, Brown, and Green have pretty much answered THAT question.

LOT. Is GRob gonna look like at least an average player there? Jury still out, but I'm encouraged by what I saw vs Cowboys.

C. Is there anyone decent behind Barnes? Well, Kush sure looked good there Saturday to me.

TE. Is Higbee the real deal or just a practice player? I think that question has been convincingly answered.

WR. Mixed bag here, so far. Love Spruce. Williams and McRoberts kinda flashed. Too little to go on with Quick, so far. Cooper and Thomas were both thuds.

DL. Almost too much talent, huh? Longacre and Westbrooks are making statements. Seau, too.

LB. I'm uneasy about Ogletree at MLB, despite Fisher's kind words. I need to be convinced, still. The backups didn't stand out or flash as we've seen players at other positions do, either.

CB. Sure hope Gaines is healthy and returns to his '14 form. Otherwise, it looks iffy to me. Joyner looks like a slot CB only. Sensabaugh disappointed me. I think Roberson is an okay backup. There have been flashes from J Washington, Hill, and Jordan. So our cupboard is not exactly bare.

S. Jury is still out, I think. If it's gonna be a TJM and Mo tandem, I would sure like to see some play that more reassures me. Maybe the D was just being deliberately vanilla to determine exactly what each player can and cannot yet do, as has been speculated?

Overall, pretty danged encouraging, don't you think?

My "jury out" list is a fairly short one, currently.

WR
LB (specifically Ogletree)
CB
S

And all 4 of those could possibly be cleared up as soon as the Chief game.

Is Mannion the best QB on the roster right now?

After Saturday's second half performance is it time for Mannion to get the nod to start while Goff comes up to speed?

"Mannion undoubtedly made some good plays on Saturday, helping engineer the Rams’ fourth-quarter comeback victory over Dallas. The quarterback played the entire second half, completing 18 of his 25 passes for 147 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception."

I know it wasn't against the 1s but after a game like this I think it is time for him to get a pre-season start to see if he is ready for that level.

NFL threatens James Harrison, Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews with indefinite suspension

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/t...the-nflpa-over-al-jazeera-case-000616194.html

The NFL is begging the NFLPA to fight back over the Al Jazeera case.

The NFL said if Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Green Bay Packers linebackers Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews and free-agent defensive lineman Mike Neal — the four active players publicly accused in an Al Jazeera America report last year for performance-enhancing drug use — don’t interview with the league by Aug. 25, the NFL will suspend them indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the league. That’s according to multiple reports, including Pro Football Talk, which published the NFL’s letter to the union outlining the many times they have been stonewalled on their interview requests.

Now it gets interesting.

The NFLPA seems to have long ago understood this is how the situation would play out, from the moment itsent the NFL an affidavit on Harrison’s behalf, in which Harrison said he has never taken any PEDs and his affidavit would be his only statement to the NFL on the matter. The other players also sent affidavits, via the NFLPA. The NFLrejected them.

The implied message with that seemed to be the players would not let NFL commissioner Roger Goodell have his way in this case. This wouldn’t be like the Tom Brady/deflate-gate fiasco. Goodell has to feel emboldened by the court rulings in his favorin the BradyandAdrian Peterson cases. The union has to feel like it needs something to rally around if it ever wants to battle back over the broad powers Goodell has under Article 46 of the collective-bargaining agreement.

This may be be the case.

The league doesn’t have any evidence of these players’ drug use, and probably wouldn’t even if the players agreed to talk. That’s what makes the players’ stance on not being interviewed by the NFL so interesting. If the players told the NFL that Charlie Sly, the pharmacist in the Al Jazeera report who named those players on hidden camera, was lying and they knew nothing about his claims, what grounds would the NFL have to suspend them? A fairly unspecific allegation from someone who hasrecanted everythinghe said on hidden camera, that’s all. No failed tests. Presumably no other documentation. Almost assuredly no cooperation from Sly. Just some of his words on a hidden camera, unless the NFL has a lot more evidence than we know about. Put aside for a moment that the NFL didn’t have any evidence in the Brady case either, but suspended him anyway. In this case, all the accused players would have to do is maintain innocence and the NFL would have very little reason to suspend any of them. So there has to be a bigger reason they sent those affidavits and indicated they wouldn’t speak to the league.

Brady wasn’t the right case for the union to rally its members. The “Patriots are cheaters!” narrative infected everyone, including some players, before it became very clear that case had little to do with deflated footballs and everything to do with Goodell making sure all players knew he has absolute power over them. Also, Brady is a multi-millionaire international celebrity who has a supermodel wife and lives in a ridiculous mansion. He’s an all-time great competitor but it would seem Harrison might be easier for a majority of players to relate to, as an undrafted workaholic who became an NFL defensive player of the year.

And if Harrison (and Matthews, Peppers and Neal) can be suspended with no evidence, no failed test, just the word of one guy who won’t even stand by his statement, then they can all be treated that way too. It has to be a scary thought. All of them should be able to relate to Harrison, Peppers, Matthews and Neal if they think about it in those terms.

Harrison would seem to be the perfect player to go to war with the union against the NFL. Hehas blasted Goodelllong before the Al Jazeera report and already seemed to be getting ready for a battle when heposted his list of stipulations for an interview on Instagram. That he was the first to send an affidavit to the NFL, via the union, was no surprise. Brady isn’t the kind of person who will angrily fight the commissioner of the NFL in a public setting. I think Harrison might embrace that battle. So now we’ll see what the accused players do. They could all just decide to meet with the NFL, because an indefinite suspension is pretty serious, especially when it would be easy to just talk, admit to nothing and presumably be in the clear.

But if the NFLPA wants to rally its troops around an issue that many of them should see as unfair, this might be the time.

Practice Report 8/15: Mannion Steady as Preseason Unfolds

Practice Report 8/15: Mannion Steady as Preseason Unfolds

by Myles Simmons

When it comes to the Rams’ quarterbacks, the lion’s share of attention has been placed on No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff — and rightfully so. Pundits (including this one here) seemingly hang on his every move, asking head coach Jeff Fisher how he looks on a day-to-day basis to glean when the signal-caller may move into the starter’s role.

But Goff, of course, is not the only quarterback on the roster. And between Goff, Case Keenum, Sean Mannion, and Dylan Thompson, Fisher said Monday he feels the QBs room is in a better spot than it has been in the past.

“I’m happy with that right now and now it’s just a matter of Case leading this football team, Sean positioning himself to come in and back up if need be, and then Jared just pushing himself to where he eventually becomes ‘that guy’ for us,” Fisher said.

At this point, it feels safe to say everyone has firm expectations for how the QB roles will eventually shake out among the top three signal-callers — especially since Fisher laid it out so plainly to the media. And since there is a clear plan, the head coach said patience is a key virtue.

“We’ve done this before. We have a plan and the plan is basically, it’s all around being patient, you have to be patient with it,” Fisher said. “Certainly, as I said numerous times, it’s unfair to Jared, and to Case, and to Sean to say ‘alright, here’s the date.’ It’s not fair.

“They’re having fun, they’re learning,” Fisher continued. “You take the pressure off them, you’re patient and I think, after Week 1, we could basically say that all three of them have gotten better.”

Given that Keenum is the incumbent starter and Goff is due to take over as QB-1 sooner than later, you might expect Mannion to feel a little left out of the conversation. But when you ask the Oregon State product, that’s not the kind of answer you get.

“I don’t worry about attention, really. That has nothing to do with the way you play on the field,” Mannion said on Monday. “I think if you need to look outside at the attention to be motivated or feel motivated, then there’s something wrong with you, frankly.

“I feel like I’m a pretty self-motivated guy,” Mannion added. “I want to do well for myself, do well for my teammates. But I don’t let any attention bother me — I don’t even pay attention to it. All I concern myself with is becoming the best player I can be and doing whatever I can to help the team and play good football.”

Mannion undoubtedly made some good plays on Saturday, helping engineer the Rams’ fourth-quarter comeback victory over Dallas. The quarterback played the entire second half, completing 18 of his 25 passes for 147 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

“Sean’s numbers were really good,” Fisher said.

“I think having had a chance to look at the film, really just the one ball on the interception [is what] I’d like back,” Mannion said. “I think for the most part, I felt like I made good decisions — again, outside of that one.”

The young signal-caller said he feels like his next step is to play faster.

“Everyone talks about the speed of the game and I definitely felt much more comfortable in this preseason than last year — being a rookie last year,” Mannion said. “But any time you can just keep speeding up the way you play, keep playing faster, keep spitting the ball out, I think it’s always a good thing.”

And Mannion will continue to work on his craft focused solely on what he can control — his own performance.

“I just want to come out here and play my best football. And I think I’ve been playing well since OTAs started, and I think I’ve been playing well in training camp,” Mannion said. “And I don’t worry about anything else. I just worry about playing my best football and I feel like, for the most part, I’ve been stacking together a lot of good practices all the way since April.”

EXTRA POINTS

— Fisher liked what he saw on Saturday’s film from left tackle Greg Robinson, saying he played decisive and well.

“He played hard, he finished blocks, his hands were good, his feet were good, he was consistent, his weight was down,” Fisher said. “As a matter of fact, that was one of the things that came out of our personnel meeting last night – that this may have been the best preseason game that Greg has played to date, which would imply that Greg’s getting better and he’s had a great offseason.”

A good start to what Robinson himself has acknowledged is a big year.

— For your daily Goff update, Fisher said there were no issues with the quarterback’s non-throwing shoulder.

“Jared was fine. He got in there and made the throws,” Fisher said, specifically pointing out a few throws Goff made to rookie tight end Temarrick Hemingway. “Again, this was kind of [an] ease-yourself-back-into-the-week day, but it was good for him to be able to overcome the shoulder soreness and get out there and throw the ball around.”

— Both offensive lineman Isaiah Battle and cornerback E.J. Gaines made their way back to practice on Monday. Fisher has said he expects both to be available for Saturday’s game.

“Today he was cleared to go full speed,” Fisher said of Gaines, “so we’re going to give him a good week of practice. Barring any setbacks, he’ll play this week.”

— For a Monday roster move, the Rams waived/injured safety Brian Randolph, who suffered a torn ACL against the Cowboys on Saturday. Fisher said Monday the Rams intend to bring Randolph back to compete for a roster spot next year.

For a corresponding signing, Los Angeles added safety Michael Caputo to their roster. The former Wisconsin Badger initially signed with the Saints following the draft but was subsequently waived in mid-May.

“We worked him out a few weeks ago,” Fisher said of Caputo. “He’s in good shape, so he’ll give us some depth.”

Jeff Fisher seeks 'culture change' in terms of penalties for Rams

http://www.espn.com/blog/st-louis-r...culture-change-in-terms-of-penalties-for-rams

Alden GonzalezESPN Staff Writer

IRVINE, Calif. -- Center Tim Barnes was whistled for a false start two minutes into the game, defensive tackle Aaron Donald was called for leverage midway thru the first quarter and defensive lineman Ian Seau was caught offside with 8:52 remaining in the third.

That's it.

The Los Angeles Rams drew only three penalties in their 28-24 win against the Dallas Cowboys in Saturday's preseason opener, a welcomed sign for coach Jeff Fisher, who has overseen one of the league's most penalized teams over the last four years.

"Penalties have been an issue for us since we got here," Fisher said, "and I really want to keep the numbers down."

The Rams have ranked within the bottom eight in the NFL in penalty yards per game in each of Fisher's four seasons as coach. They were 25th in 2015, 32nd in 2014, 29th in 2013, and 30th in 2012. Last season, the Rams had as many as 12 penalties in a game (twice) and never less than four (once).

"It's a culture change," Fisher said. "We just have to keep the penalties down."

Fisher put his players through extra running at the end of Monday's practice from UC Irvine. It was procedural, but also somewhat punitive. Fisher and his staff singled out the players who committed penalties in the previous game and scheduled them for additional suicides. The rest of their teammates joined in, as they're prone to do.

"Fortunately, for them, we had [three] penalties in the game," Fisher said. "We were the least-penalized team in the preseason this weekend. It's been a point of emphasis for us; we have to continue with it."

Some additional notes from Monday's practice, with stories on Jared Goff's evolution at quarterback and the pursuit of a better rushing attack posted earlier ...

  • Cornerback E.J. Gaines was sidelined against the Cowboys because of a hamstring injury, but is on track to return for Week 2 of the preseason against the Chiefs, Fisher said. That would mark Gaines' first game action since 2014. The 24-year-old suffered a season-ending foot injury during training camp last season.

  • The Rams waived injured safety Brian Randolph, who suffered a torn ACL on Saturday, and signed safety Michael Caputo, an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin. Fisher said Sunday that the team would eventually place Randolph on injured reserve and give him a chance to compete next season.

  • The Rams will practice with full pads on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both workouts begin at 3:30 p.m. PT and will be open to the public. Quarterbacks and tight ends will sign autographs after practice on Tuesday. Running backs and wide receivers will follow on Wednesday.

So yes, ultimately, rookie franchise QB Jared Goff played one less snap than starting QB Case Keenum. With Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher indicating he’d like to get some first-team work for Goff, we’ll have to see if that changes. That makes for a tough situation in the preseason games, though.

Normally, you can pull your entire-first team entirely. Goff, though, could certainly use more snaps to prepare for Week 1 when he’ll hopefully be the starting QB as the Rams head north to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. Does that mean he gets the playing time with the second string offense as he did on Saturday? How does Case Keenum factor in moving forward for playing time in-game? Does that disrupt his ability to form any chemistry or consistent timing with his key targets including the rookie crop led by TE Tyler Higbee and WR Pharoh Cooper?

And with those offensive linemen and wide receivers at the top of this sheet, let’s see how things stack up in Week 2 to see what we need to take away. On this alone, it’s hard to really break down except that clearly the staff needed to get those guys snaps to see where they go on the depth chart right now, not really for the 53-man.

Josh Forrest LB 4 7.02%

Nic Grigsby LB 1 1.75%

Again, the takeaway at the top is that the coaches are trying to sort out the CB and DL depth chart more than anything, not necessarily that they “like” those guys.

And figuring out how to sort out the linebackers could just be a function of deciding whether or not Bryce Hager and Cameron Lynch are legit backup linebacking options and not just special teams contributors. The real indicator you know this was a test for those two? Not just how much they played, but look at 2016 NFL Draft sixth-round pick Josh Forrest and UDFAs Cory Littleton and Nic Grigsby. From where they’re sitting, their playing time likely increases over the next two games, but it’ll honestly be too late for LB depth.

The audition just took place.

In the NFL things happen that are out of a team's control. With that being said something out of the L.A. Rams control was a torn ACL to their rookie safety Brian Randolph.

Randolph will be back to compete next year as he was waived with an injured designation and will be placed on injured reserve. The Rams just signed former Saint and Wisconsin Badger safety Michael Caputo to take Randolph's spot.

Caputo is a guy who has been considered a durable leader as NFL.com puts it. He totaled 244 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, one and a half sacks, three interceptions, 17 pass breakups, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries over his college career. Caputo was also named captain for the 2015 season as a red-shirt senior. The former Badger is not the fastest player (he ran a 4.62 second forty time) but he excels in run support and also flashes ball skills for the next level. Here is his scouting report for the NFL.com's draft profile of Caputo.

Bonsignore: What was learned from the Rams’ preseason opener

Bonsignore: What was learned from the Rams’ preseason opener
By Vincent Bonsignore, Los Angeles Daily News

Game one of the Rams’ return to Los Angeles is officially in the books. And it was a mixed bag at the Coliseum Saturday night, to be sure.

As Jeff Fisher so aptly put after the Rams backups chased down the Cowboys in 28-24 victory: “We’ve got our work cut out. We’re not close to being regular season-ready.”

The good news is, the Rams still have three weeks to sort themselves out before their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

On the other hand, some of the red flags we saw Saturday night might take months to rectify rather than weeks.

That said, let’s take a look at the good and bad of a historical night in downtown L.A.:

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A ROOKIE QB >> Jared Goff looked every bit the rookie quarterback he is before an injury to his non-throwing shoulder landed him on the bench after just two series. His offensive line didn’t help matters by exposing him to a pair of vicious hits — one on the interception he threw in the second quarter — and in doing so raised a valid concern.

Goff isn’t a runner — nor is he stout despite his 6-foot-5 length — and while his outstanding footwork enabled him to dance out of trouble in college, the NFL ain’t the Pac-12.

If the Rams can’t provide even average protection for Goff at this stage — and their offensive line has been a major concern for years now — he’s liable to take a pounding. And that could sabotage his rookie year.

As Goff progresses at the NFL level and makes the kind of quick decisions and throws he was known for at Cal, he can help mitigate offensive line issues. But the split-second indecision he shows at this point will play poorly if his blockers can’t buy him that extra second of time.

SPRUCE MAKING A PUSH >> Nelson Spruce is the all-time leading pass catcher in Pac-12 history. Let that dance around your head a bit before remembering he went undrafted last April.

Done laughing?

Or cringing?

Me too.

Whatever NFL scouts penalized Spruce for in measurables, he makes up for in intangibles. Like impeccable footwork off the line of scrimmage, which buys him back the split-second he lacks in prototypical wide receiver speed. Spruce’s footwork enables him to get past faster defenders off the line of scrimmage, which means he’s a step ahead of them from the get go. That’s critical at this stage. Throw in his precision route running and sure hands, and all of a sudden it doesn’t matter that he doesn’t run a world-class 40-yard dash. The point is to get open and catch the ball, and Spruce has been doing that all during camp and continued to do so on Saturday.

STARTING WIDE RECEIVERS WERE NO-SHOWS >> The Rams have had issues for years at wide receiver, and aside from Tavon Austin, who is a screen, slant, running weapon that, when utilized correctly, can be an asset, none of their starting wideouts have stood out in camp or against the Cowboys.

Kenny Britt and Brian Quick have had ample time to prove they are worthy of starting jobs and spots on the roster, but by now it’s painfully obvious they are keeping their positions by default. Neither was a big factor on Saturday, and while playing time had a bit to do with that, it’s hard to believe either will turn a new leaf at this point.

SECONDARY HAD ISSUES >> Preseason perspective is understanding that defensive game-planning is nonexistent and schemes and coverages are locked tightly in playbooks for obvious reasons.

That said, Rams cornerbacks Coty Sensabaugh and Lamarcus Joyner were badly outplayed in one-on-one, go-get-the-ball battles with Cowboys receivers Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams.

It was a case of physics.

The Cowboys 6-foot-2 wide outs had an obvious advantage over the 5-11 Sensabaugh and the 5-8 Joyner.

That could be an issue moving forward.

Sensabaugh and Joyner have been getting the bulk of the first-team reps as replacements for Janoris Jenkins, who left for the Giants via free agency. E.J. Gaines is also in the mix, but has been banged up and limited in camp so far.

Joyner seems better suited in the slot, where his 5-8 stature won’t be as apparent, as that position is more about matching up against quickness than big wideouts. Sensabaugh is an experienced veteran, but the Rams didn’t necessarily sign him to take over a starting cornerback spot.

They need Gaines to get back as soon as possible.

The Rams gambled a bit by letting Jenkins walk. It’s only one preseason game — and a slew of vanilla coverages — but his absence was felt.

HIGBEE IS A KEEPER >> Tyler Higbee has been one of the stars of training camp, and he absolutely transferred his practice field success to an actual game.

At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds and blessed with adequate speed and athletic ability, the fourth-round rookie tight end from Western Kentucky has been a nightmare to defend for Rams linebackers and defensive backs.

It was no different against the Cowboys.

Higbee is strong enough to get off the line of scrimmage, fast enough to beat linebackers in coverage and big enough to block out linebackers and defensive backs on jump balls.

If he stays healthy, he’s got a chance to be a big-time rookie contributor.
