What a difference a year makes!

last year was the worst football year of my life. After the news dropped that my team was leaving, I found myself completely disinterested in the offseason. I forced myself to watch the season and yet felt I lost all my love for the team.

Now, this season, the passion seems to be back. I've gotten over the move. I'm excited about the new coach. FA is upon us and I'm stoked. I find myself intrigued by the combine and draft.

Feels good to be back in this football state of mind. I was scared that I would never get this back.

Tony Romo arrived in Dallas in 2003 as an unknown, undrafted player from Eastern Illinois. On Thursday, the Cowboys will release the 14-year veteran into free agency for the first time in his career.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Jane Slater reported that the Cowboys have told Romo that he will be released, according to a source informed of the decision. When the new league year starts Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, Romo will be free to sign with any team he chooses.

The timing allows Romo to find a new home faster and could create more potential landing spots for him. Rapoport reported Wednesday the Broncos and Texans are "very interested suitors," meaning they will be fighting over a quarterback for the second straight offseason. The Texans "won" the battle to sign Brock Osweiler last March and they are looking for help once again.

Rapoport expects Romo to take a Peyton Manning-style visit tour in the coming days, so don't necessarily expect a quick signing. The release also indicates that the Cowboys were not confident in their ability to inspire any trade compensation for Romo, especially under the terms of his previous contract.

Romo was set to make $14 million in 2017 with the Cowboys. He might wind up making that money this season elsewhere, but any contract will likely build in protections for injury. Romo didn't even last three series in the 2016 preseason before suffering a compression fracture in his back. Romo also broke his clavicle in 2015 and has not played more than two games in a row since the 2014 season. He's a huge injury risk for any team that signs him, having also undergone previous disk surgery, suffered two transverse process fractures, two broken clavicles and had a cyst removed from his spine.

That injury history spells out the inherent risk in signing Romo. He will turn 37 years old in April and there is no guarantee he will last even half a season. The Texans could be more attractive to Romo because they have a better offensive line than Denver, and it's possible Romo would not have to uproot his family in Dallas. The Broncos, meanwhile, have a championship defense and pedigree. Signing Romo despite his risk makes particular sense for Denver because the team doesn't necessarily need Romo. They have two promising young quarterbacks in Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch and could survive if Romo was hurt once again. The Texans have a more pressing need at quarterback but less cap space and are already forking over $16 million guaranteed to Osweiler in 2017

The drama surrounding Romo's next destination mirrors some of the ups and downs in an incredible Cowboystenure. He's one of the mostoverexposed yet underrated quarterbacks of the last decade. There's no doubt he's been a top-10 quarterback for almost all of his career and was often let down by his front office and defense. One of the most aggressive quarterbacks in football, Romo ranks second all-time in net yards-per-attempt, behind only Manning. His one regular season series in the 2016 season ended in a touchdown, showing off Romo's typical flair for the dramatic.

Yet most people remember Romo best for the heartbreaks, for his four playoff defeats, for the Week 17 do-or-die games where the Cowboys fell short. It is probably not lost on Romo that the perfect landing spot for him would be Dallas, where a historic offensive line and running game could minimize his exposure to injury. Instead, Romo heads to the unknown, another chance to rewrite the final chapter in a star-crossed career.

Sean McVay faces 'great challenge' as Rams coach, offensive playcaller

Sean McVay faces 'great challenge' as Rams coach, offensive playcaller

http://www.espn.com/blog/los-angele...-challenge-as-head-coach-offensive-playcaller

LOS ANGELES -- Some of the best advice Sean McVay received about his new, high-profile job revolved around time management. As the new head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, McVay would take on a slew of responsibilities that would pull him in a multitude of directions.

Even so, McVay was told he needed to remain heavily involved in the offensive meetings, especially in the early stages, because he isn't just the youngest coach in the NFL's modern era.

He also remains a playcaller.

McVay, 31, will call the offensive plays for the Rams in 2017, a responsibility he knew he would be taking on as soon as he got the job in January. Many others do the same. In fact, half of the NFL's head coaches ended up calling plays on offense or defense last season. But it's a tricky balancing act, one that McVay admitted at the recent NFL combine would present "a great challenge" in his first season.

been ready for a while" to call plays.

"I think it’s important that some of the reasons you get the job, you keep doing that," Shanahan, who oversaw McVay and LaFleur when he was the Redskins' offensive coordinator from 2010-13, said of calling plays as a first-year head coach. "I think it’s important to have people on your staff who have been with you, who know what to expect, where you don’t have to spend a year training them in any way."

An ESPN story from February 2015 noted that 10 head coaches called their own plays, and that number has only climbed. Five of the coaches hired for the 2016 season -- Gase, the Buccaneers' Dirk Koetter, the Browns' Hue Jackson, the Eagles' Doug Pederson and the Giants' Ben McAdoo -- called their own plays. By the end of the past season, 16 of the 32 teams had head coaches who called most of the plays on one side of the ball.

Two of those coaches, the 49ers' Chip Kelly and the Bills' Rex Ryan, have since been fired. Another, the Broncos' Gary Kubiak, stepped down. But McVay and Shanahan have been added to the mix, and so has the Redskins' Jay Gruden, who ceded playcalling duties to McVay the past two seasons and will take them back now that he is gone.

"The toughest thing is in between series," Gruden said during the combine. "You have to watch the game. You have to be in tune with what’s going on on defense. You can’t just go sit next to the quarterback and talk about your next series of plays. That’s the toughest adjustment Sean is going to have. But I think with the staff that he has and the familiarity he has with them, I think he’ll be fine."

Coaches will often call plays the first year or two so they can establish a foundation, then turn those duties over to the respective coordinator. But sometimes it's hard to let go. Look no further than the Packers' Mike McCarthy, who turned the offense over to assistant Tom Clements in 2015, watched the offense struggle and took over once again. Or Bill O'Brien, who went back to calling the Texans' offensive plays after a 27-0 loss to the Patriots in Week 3 of the past season. Or the Saints' Asshole Face, who took control of the offense for a 49-21 rout of the Rams in Week 12 and might continue to call plays moving forward.

Sometimes, though, the grind becomes too much, the criticism too pointed, and there is a desire to be free from responsibilities. Koetter has already considered giving up playcalling duties, partly so that he can dedicate more energy to prepping for team meetings, but he doesn't want to do so until he is certain that he won't take the playcalling back. Then there's McAdoo, who took a lot of heat for overseeing what many considered a predictable, unimaginative offense in 2016 and has been coy about his team's playcalling duties for 2017.

"It changes a lot of dynamics," said Bruce Arians, who has called the Cardinals' offensive plays the past four years. "You better have a real good schedule and some people you trust doing other jobs because you're spread thin a little bit. It's also whether or not you're just calling plays or doing the whole game plan as an offensive coordinator. That's two different animals. I'm very fortunate to have a staff that does most of the work, fills me in, and I call the plays. Other guys who want to be the coordinator and head coach, that's not easy."

Jackson, Shanahan and O'Brien will do that in 2017, but McVay and others will employ coordinators who will absorb most of the burden of putting together the game plan each week. McVay isn't just a young head coach; he is the playcaller for an offense that has gained the fewest yards in the NFL in each of the past two seasons, for a team that doesn't have enough draft picks or salary-cap space to provide an immediate fix.

He'll need all the help he can get.

"He’s up for it," Gruden said of McVay. "I was up for it. It’s just a matter of how good you feel about the people on your staff. I think once I became more comfortable with Sean here and us having the same line of thinking, putting a plan together, I felt good about him talking to the quarterback and calling plays. I think he’ll do a good job. He’s a very organized guy, very detailed guy. He’ll find a way to get it done."

When McVay Left Skins....

Did that ignite the dumpster fire that's now out of control in Washington? WTF is going on within the Skins franchise? GM not showing up, not resigning core players, coaches signing elsewhere. Someone got a handle on what gives? I have to guess a lot of it has to do with Ownership.

Seems like every year there is a least one franchise that looks like a dumtpser fire. (Browns, Niners most recently).

Word early on Wednesday was that quarterback Brian Hoyer is expected to pick his next team on Thursday, but it looks like his mind is already made up.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Hoyer will sign with the 49ers. The Jets were the other team believed to be pursuing Hoyer in the “legal tampering” window leading up to the Thursday afternoon start of the new league year.

The move will reunite Hoyer with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was the offensive coordinator for the Browns in 2014 when Hoyer made 13 starts at quarterback. Hoyer will likely be in good position to open the year as the starting quarterback in Santa Clara as well.

With Colin Kaepernick opting out of his deal, the team has no other quarterbacks under contract and are expected to add one during the draft. Hoyer fits the bill as a bridge quarterback who can run the offense until a younger player is ready to take over thanks to his experience in Shanahan’s offense and his spurts of solid play with the Bears and Texans over the last two seasons.

Hoyer’s presence on the 49ers roster would also seem to make it less likely that the 49ers are going to pursue a trade for Kirk Cousins, who has been linked to the team largely because of his own experience with Shanahan.

Report: Marquise Goodwin headed to 49ers

The 49ers plan to sign free agent wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday.

Goodwin had his best season as a wide receiver with the Bills in 2016 with 29 catches, three for touchdowns. Goodwin was an Olympic long jumper in 2012, the year before he was drafted by the Bills in the third round, and can stretch defenses with his speed.

Washington had also inquired about Goodwin Tuesday when the free agent negotiation period opened. The 49ers came into the week with plenty of holes to fill across their roster and especially at the wide receiver position. They’ve also been linked to free agent wide receiver Pierre Garcon and recently re-signed Jeremy Kerley.

Goodwin, 26, battled injuries early in his career and only played in two games in 2015. He had three touchdown catches a rookie but didn’t have another until he matched that total last season.

Salary Cap numbers

So I was curious as to why we have such limited CAP against other teams. I mean even the freaking patriots have like $55M. Based on this site (I don't get the TEAM CAP #??) it made me start to question if Demoff is as good with the CAP as I thought. I mean if Tru and TA are both larger hits then Tom Brady something is wrong. Don't get me wrong, I like our players but Barron is an $11M hit, Brockers is and $11M hit and Quinn is a $10.5M hit. Sure hope he comes back to form or that's a big chunk for him too.
I'm not a CAP expert but seems these could of been broken out a little better but I didn't look at each year to compare in the future. I don't even get how the Browns have $100M. Their current totals are already like $100M and if the cap is about $167M how does that add up? Someone school me please.

Post Combine Fan Mock 1

A few years ago I was very active on several pages and boards when it came to posting my own mock drafts. I like figuring out intriguing fits for the Rams system and hearing as much feedback as possible. So lets begin with my first Rams mock for 2017.

2.5 (37) Gareon Conley CB OSU (6' 195)
gareon-conley-by-jeremy-birmingham_1024_hsamzt.jpg

I want to put Forrest Lamp's name here so bad but I don't he makes it to pick 37. With the rumors Trumaine Johnson is being shopped the Rams will need another corner who can play on the outside. This is a very deep class and I wont doubt if the Rams double dip at this position. Conley is a good press corner that can cover the field but needs to work on run support. I know everyone is calling for offensive pieces but I assume that the Rams will sign at least one receiver and offensive lineman before the draft and even if they sign a corner they will still need to fill another outside corner spot because Gaines, a Fisher guy, hasn't been getting it done.

3.5 (69) Taylor Moton OT/OG W. Mich (6'5 319)
taylor-motonjpg-98591c7464c6bf55.jpg

Big player who I think has some tools to play tackle but would be a better guard fit. Power, power, power! Set him in front of Gurley and watch the run game improve.Plug him next to Rob Havenstein and trust that Kromer can work with some of the other young players on the Rams OL.

4.5 (112) Bucky Hodges TE VT (6'6 257)
94d720_ca672020c5df4b339e9cc8193e57fdf3~mv2.jpg

I've seen several people bump his draft value up after his physical tools showed at the combine (4.57 forty, 39in vert, 11'2 broad jump), but what I saw was a guy who has never been in the three point stance and has a lot of work when it comes to running routes besides hitting the seem. Which I believe McVay should be up to the task, a former TE coach who worked with Jordan Reed, McVay won't make Hodges an every down player in year 1, but with Kendricks and Higbee the Rams will be fine. So why should be draft Bucky? Its BPA (best player available) and he adds an immediate redzone threat and if pans out could the the Jimmy Graham of this draft! Or Fendi Onobun if y'all remember him.

4.36 (141) Jalen Robinette WR Air Force (6'3 220)
460x.jpg

Ran a lot slower than I thought, but has the ability to use size at the line and combination of deep separation to become a deep threat. Averaged like over 27 per catch in college. A bit raw of a prospect who will need work but with Air Force work ethic I'm sure that won't be an issue.

5.5 (149) Brian Allen CB Utah (6'3 215)
29022702343_c0a206e183_o.jpg

A page from Seattle's playbook. Allen a 6'3 WR who converted to defense has raw tools and could benefit from his length in bump and run coverage. Pair that with a Wade Phillips pass rush and a year or two down the line could be a very good corner in the league. He is raw, tartare, actually but could find a role on ST while he hones is natural ability.

6.5 (189) Devonte' Fields DE Louisville (6'2 236)
devonte-fields-louisville.jpg

A talented athlete with motor issues. I normally don't like these kind of players in later rounds because they never pan out and I'd rather have a core special teamer that works hard then a guy who takes plays off. But with the switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 we will need to find someone to play OLB opposite side of Robert Quinn. Even if we sign a vet we will still need depth and I hope we can benefit from his upside.

7.5 (223) Speedy Noil WR Texas A&M (5'11 199)
920x920.jpg

Noil has off the field issues, but damnit he is talented. The number one "athlete" coming out of high school, Noil has done nothing but get in his own way. He is talented though and maybe putting him in the LA lights won't help him but the Rams need talent on the roster and can roll the dice here. Some leaders in the locker room will have to put him in his place. Also has KR value to maybe make up for the possibility of losing Cunningham

7.16 (234) Khalid Abdullah RB JMU (5'10 220)
b2198841-5d2c-4bb6-a793-2df38fbb5423-large16x9_asnkhalidabdullahjmu

Most places I see him listed at 220 but I've also seem him listed at 194. A shame he wasn't invited to the combine after he tore up North Dokata State in the FCS semi finals and won the FCS Championship. Has a good pop and power, but I can't tell how fast he is because he can break out, but you see him sometimes get caught from behind. Just a good football player who could fight with the others on our roster form a practice squad spot.

Please let's start a discussion on which players you like or don't like and I have too much fun making these so I'll be posting one every few weeks or so until the draft.

Glennon set to get $15M per from Bears?

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...glennon-eyes-chicago-as-preferred-destination

As the NFL glides into the first day of negotiations in free agency, one of the major dominoes could already have his preferred destination in mind.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Mike Glennon has his eye on the Chicago Bears -- and the feeling is mutual. Rapoport added that Glennon is set to fetch between $14-15 million per year.

Rapoport added that "this is not a joke" in front of Glennon's projected salary, though most of the outrage about his contract comes from those outside the league. Glennon's projected deal has been high for quite some time thanks to another raise in the salary cap and the market dictated by former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler. It's easier for fans to swallow once they understand that this is simply what a quarterback costs.

Should Glennon come to Chicago and start, his salary would be somewhere between the $7 million Cleveland owes Robert Griffin III and the $16 million being made by Andy Dalton in Cincinnati, a fine and completely reasonable number for Glennon, who has a season's worth of career starts under his belt (18 total), a good touchdown to interception ratio (30-15) and a completion percentage near 60.

Glennon would essentially be making a few million dollars more than Ryan Fitzpatrick did with the Jets a season ago.

It would not be surprising to see the Bears go all in this season. The Lions showed a season ago that the division is certainly for the taking with the right breaks and the Bears boast an impressive foundation along their offensive line and in the backfield. With a treasure trove of salary-cap space at their disposal, it sounds like locking down the quarterback will be project No. 1 once the window opens.

The Rams signed defensive tackle Dominique Easley after the Patriots released the 2014 first-round draft pick. And now that Easley is eligible for free agency, the Rams have a fairly cheap way to keep him from leaving.

The Rams, per a league source, have applied the low-level, original-round tender to Easley. It allows them to keep him for $1.797 million, and to get a first-round pick if someone else signs him to an offer sheet that the Rams don’t match.

Easley appeared in all 16 games (zero starts) last year, with 3.5 sacks. He appeared in 11 games in 2014 and 11 games in 2015 with the Patriots, started three times.

Article: Terrelle Pryor 'anxious' about free agency, but Browns aren't/Signs with Skins

http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland-...or-anxious-about-free-agency-but-browns-arent

Terrelle Pryor inches closer to free agency today when the noon deadline arrives that will allow Pryor's agents to check his value.

For two days, Drew Rosenhaus will be able to communicate with teams to see what Pryor might command on the market, with deals allowed to be signed at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

This may cause nervousness from fans who do not want Pryor to leave, but the Cleveland Browns do not seem overly concerned. If they gave off any worry or inkling of panic at the notion that Pryor may leave when they spoke of him at the combine, it was well hidden.

March 6, 2017

The fact that the Browns and Pryor did not work out a deal before now indicates that either the team's offer was low or the player's demands were high. The Jamie Collins contract would indicate the Browns aren't keeping their money in a pillow; Collins was paid fairly and generously when he signed a contract extension last month. The Browns' willingness to let Pryor check the market also indicates they feel their offer was fair and if he doesn't think so, he should check his value.

There is a lot of money on the market and some average-to-good players will become rich, but whether receivers get that money remains to be seen. There are two schools of thought: Some think Pryor earned a big deal with the way he played in his one season as a receiver; others think Pryor may be disappointed with the money he'll be offered.

It takes only one team to make Pryor's choice the right one, but if no team does that, Pryor may come back to the Browns asking about that deal they had on the table.

The Browns act like they believe Pryor will find out that the money isn't what he expects it to be, and if so, they will take him back.

"It’s free agency, so they get to make a choice and a decision too," coach Hue Jackson said. "Hopefully, he’ll make the right one and stay here with us."

Somethin fishy goin on in DC

GM Scot McCloughan not at HQ for first day of legal tampering period

  • Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan remained away from the team's facility as the legal tampering period began Tuesday, a source confirmed.
The Washington Post first reported his absence.

It's not a surprising development considering that McCloughan missed the scouting combine, citing family matters, and there have been reports of ongoing tension in the organization. But, as with the combine, it's highly unusual for a general manager not to be involved in a process that could result in acquiring talent, raising more questions about his status.

McCloughan is not in charge of negotiating contracts, and a lot of what's taking place over the next few days involves finances. The legal tampering period, which opened Tuesday at noon and ends Thursday at 3:59 p.m. ET, allows teams to engage representatives of free agents in contract talks. No agreements can be signed until the beginning of the league year at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday. The Redskins also have a number of their own free agents to consider, notably receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, tight end Vernon Davis and defensive end Chris Baker.

At the combine, team president Bruce Allen said McCloughan would return as soon as his family matters "are cleared up." His grandmother died in early February, and that was the reason the Redskins gave for his absence.

McCloughan has been in charge of putting together the roster since he was hired in 2015; he also was given the authority to make player cuts. His absence during a critical time is yet another sign of something wrong in the Redskins organization. There have been multiple reports of tension between McCloughan and Allen. There also has been speculation about McCloughan's future with the organization. McCloughan's strength over the years has been the college draft; this would be his third with the Redskins.

Several agents said last week that they had remained in contact with McCloughan about their respective players.

Redskins senior vice president Tony Wyllie said when asked about McCloughan, "We are focusing on free agency."

Rams In Talks To Trade TJ

The #Rams are in discussions with several teams about potentially trading franchised CB Trumaine Johnson, per teams involved. Big domino.

This is an Ian Rapoport tweet about 15 minutes ago.

I only wish we had a chance to get this done with the talent I saw in the combine along with the Free Agency killer TJ's contract is going to be with so many players we could pick up and other needs. Just hope we can get it done but think its too late.:icare:

Wideouts & rough round strategy

Going through the wideouts the second time around and one of the guys I really, really like is Isaiah Ford. Now, granted, one think I like about him is he's not an early round guy, as his 4.62 is going to cost him some money. His strength is his precise route running and he actually ran pro routes on the outside, so I think he's a real nice fit for what this staff is looking for and he should come at a good value in that third round range because he's gonna grade out below the guys like Kupp.

Looking at the group as a whole, I think round 3 is a very nice round to address wideout. Rams pick early on, and there's a bunch of guys that slot into that round 2-3ish range who are going to be bumped down due to the strength of DBs and DEs.

If I were in Snead's shoes my goal would be along those lines, with CB/TE likely in round 2 taking best available player, and then CB/TE/WR in round 3 minus of course whatever position I take round 2. Round 4 inevitably is going to look similar simply because there's too much depth in this draft, so we can expect good values at those positions there as well. Only other concern for me is Center, I think the first time I see value on that position I'd go after it, problem is it's gonna be tough to do it in round 2, so somewhere round 3-5 they gotta get that done.

Chargers are cleaning house today

#AsExpected: Chargers cut Flowers, save $7M

Chargers released CB Brandon Flowers.

Flowers' $9-million salary was set to become guaranteed on Saturday, so it was only a matter of time before he was cut. The move saves the Chargers $7 million against the cap. Flowers ended last season on injured reserve with a concussion and has a concerning history of brain injuries. The 31-year-old may decide to call it a career.

Chargers released WR Stevie Johnson.

The move saves $3.5 million in cash and against the cap. It is not a surprising development considering Johnson missed all of 2016 recovering from meniscus surgery after playing just 10 games his first year with the Chargers. Going on 31 (in July), Johnson may struggle to land guaranteed money on the open market.

Chargers cut 2013 first-rounder D.J. Fluker
8332.jpg

Chargers released RG D.J. Fluker.

The Chargers picked up Fluker's fifth-year option last April, but they clearly do not still think he is worth the $8.821 million he was owed in 2017. Fluker now heads into a surprisingly strong guard market, although it is possible teams give him a look at right tackle, which is where he began his career. This could just be the first cut as the Chargers look to remake their offensive line. (Again.)
