In Their Own Words - Kiser Eager to Make an Immediate Impact on Rams Defense

With the close of the 2018 NFL Draft, 11 college prospects can now call themselves Los Angeles Rams.

After a draft haul that saw the franchise make moves to acquire 10 selections in Day 3 alone, the Rams were able to replenish depth at multiple positions — bringing in several new, dynamic playmakers.

And now that the big event has come and past, therams.com will be taking a look at each member of the club’s 2018 Draft Class.

Linebacker was one of the Rams’ clear needs heading into the 2018 NFL Draft. Not only will Los Angeles likely be without both of its starters on the outside, but it also lost one of two starting inside linebackers — trading Alec Ogletree to the Giants during the offseason.

And while each of these losses represents a potential hole in the Rams roster, they also spell new opportunities for the four incoming linebackers drafted in 2018.

Virginia’s Micah Kiser is one such player. Kiser was the second player in ACC history — after current Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly — to lead the conference in tackles for three consecutive seasons. He is a versatile player who comes to L.A. “ready to contribute and be as productive as I can.”

Here is Micah Kiser in his own words:

On his reaction to becoming a Los Angeles Ram:

“I’m pumped. This is a blessing. I knew along, I knew the Rams organization liked me as a player and were interested. I’m just so happy to be a Ram, so glad that they chose me.”

On what he brings to Los Angeles:

“I’m a very smart linebacker, a leader on the field, and a great player. Very productive, I think I’ve been one of the more productive linebackers in college football over the last three years. I’m just going to come in and do whatever they want me to do — special teams, linebacker. I’m just all about the team and I’m just a football player.”

On if he believes he can come in and make an immediate impact:

“You know the roster, but everyone at this level is a pro, so you have to come in and work. Anyone can play. Anyone that gets picked in this draft or is a veteran, is a great football player. So, I’m just ready to come in and put my best foot forward and be as productive as I can. I feel like I’ve done a lot at the college level and it’s only going to get better.”

Franklin-Myers Position

John Franklin Myers was definitely a reach by a lot of standards and I think with the body type, you’d expect him to be a rotational backup in the 5 technique. But what if he cut weight? Very unlikely he would be asked to drop 20lbs before camp, but what if he is more of an edge guy then we are giving him credit for. He is a pretty good athlete, and from what I read played in a stand up role his first few years in college. Could the Rams possibly be hoping he can drop weight and be a SLB?

Not likely but we’ll see

Fatal flaw for all 32 NFL teams

Fatal Flaw: QB health

Offensive line would work well here, since both veteran Sam Bradford and rookie Josh Rosen are prone to taking too many shots. Along with Mike Glennon, the Cardinals have three quarterbacks who are similar, and no one who is scampering away from heavy defensive pressure. They also have a pair of quarterbacks in Bradford and Rosen who missed significant time last year (Bradford with a knee for the Vikings, Rosen with concussion for UCLA). Vegas set the Cardinals over/under at 5.5 wins and they will flirt with the under if their quarterbacks can't stay on the field.

SEA.png

Fatal Flaw: Offensive line

Now and forever, it feels like. Russell Wilson has been tremendous at avoiding pressure over the course of his career and for large parts of his tenure in Seattle, he's managed to mitigate bad offensive line work by spinning around a bunch and pulling a rabbit out of his hat. At some point it won't work. This was going to be the year Seattle went to work upgrading the unit, but they didn't invest during free agency or the draft. Duane Brownis still there after a trade last season and the team is high on German Ifedi. Justin Britt has flashed before. Maybe getting Tom Cable out of town will magically transform this line and Rashaad Penny's tackle-breaking ways will result in Brian Schottenheimer's offense going nuclear. Or maybe that won't happen.

SF.png

Fatal Flaw: Expectations

The over/under for the Niners in Year 2 of Kyle Shanahan's tenure is nine games. That's wild, man. You can talk yourself into loving this team, especially after they added Weston Richburg and Mike McGlinchey in the offseason to protect Jimmy Garoppolo. I have a hard time seeing this offense being bad. Defensively the personnel is there too: Richard Sherman, if healthy, can still ball out. They have talent on the defensive line with Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas. Reuben Foster needs his legal issues sorted out, but he flashed last season. People are just penciling this team in for the Rams chief competition in this division and it feels premature.

LAR.png

Fatal Flaw: Edge rushers

There are not many flaws on this team. The offense has an ascending young quarterback in Jared Goff, an MVP-caliber running back in Todd Gurley and just added Brandin Cooks to a wideout group with Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp already on it. The defensive line is Michael Brockers, Ndamukong Suh and Aaron Donald. Most weeks it will look like someone is taking dynamite to an old stadium they way they cave in offensive lines. But if we're going to nitpick -- and that's what we're doing! -- there are no guaranteed edge rushers here. Someone out of Matt Longacre, Samson Ebukam, Carlos Thompson, Garrett Sickels and the just-drafted duo of Ogbonnia Okoronkow/Trevon Young might find their way to double-digit sacks because there are going to be some free ones out there. But it's not an elite aspect of this team heading into the offseason.

Rams GM hints at urgent extension for Cooks

It came across my phone as an alert, but not much new in here.

Rams GM hints at urgent extension for Cooks

The Los Angeles Rams are going all-in for a Super Bowl this winter and it seems Brandin Cooks figures to be with the team for the long haul.

Cooks, acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots in April, is expected to be the Rams' top receiver in 2018, headlining a group that includes Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods.

The 24-year-old is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2018 season and Rams general manager Les Snead hinted at a possible extension for Cooks, noting that he's among many players that need new deals.

"We've been in discussions with his agents and they're well aware we want to get something done," Snead said to Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio. "We do think he's a perfect fit for us. We want to make sure that he's around, and around for a long time. We also have some other contracts we need to deal with over the next month, two months."

It's rare for a player as young and productive as Cooks to play for three teams before he turns 25, but it's key that the Rams lock up one of their best offensive weapons while emerging as the new power of the NFC West.

Redskins Cheerleader-Gate

As usual Mike Foolio :poop: refuses to call the Redskins by their team name lest it offend anyone. :mrburns:

Washington cheerleaders story gets coverage on Today, GMA
Posted by Mike Foolio on May 3, 2018

The NFL has kept a low profile in the aftermath of Wednesday’s report from the New York Timesregarding a Costa Rican excursion gone extremely bizarre for Washington’s cheerleaders in 2013. The NFL may not be able to keep a low profile much longer.

The story is getting noticed. Via SportsBusiness Daily, both NBC’s Today and ABC’s Good Morning America covered it on Thursday. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos called the allegations “blockbusters.”

Mainstream, early-morning news coverage has become the unofficial litmus test for whether an NFL controversy will go away quickly and quietly or whether it will have staying power. This one isn’t going to be regarded as an aberration or a blip on the radar screen. And as it gets more attention, more cheerleaders who have experienced inappropriate behavior with NFL teams or elsewhere will feel empowered to speak out.

Of course, certain inauthentic charlatans hoping to cater to a certain mindset will argue loudly that the Times and/or others in the media hope to eventually end cheerleading. This predictable effort to preach to a very specific choir overlooks the basic reality that, if misconduct or abuse is happening, it needs to be identified and rectified.

The NFL has not yet responded to an email sent Wednesday by PFT regarding whether the Personal Conduct Policy applies to any of the allegations contained in the story published by the Times. That’s not surprising; one way to keep a story from becoming a story is to not acknowledge the story.

Now that it’s a story, however, the NFL can’t afford to sit back and let others control the narrative. The NFL also can’t afford to create a perception that players who potentially engage in improper behavior are treated one way, and that teams/owners who engage in improper behavior are treated another way.

Redskins Cheerleaders Describe Topless Photo Shoots and an Uneasy Night Out
By Juliet Macur

When the Washington Redskins took their cheerleading squad to Costa Rica in 2013 for a calendar photo shoot, the first cause for concern among the cheerleaders came when Redskins officials collected their passports upon arrival at the resort, depriving them of their official identification.

For the photo shoot, at the adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo resort on Culebra Bay, some of the cheerleaders said they were required to be topless, though the photographs used for the calendar would not show nudity. Others wore nothing but body paint. Given the resort’s secluded setting, such revealing poses would not have been a concern for the women — except that the Redskins had invited spectators.

A contingent of sponsors and FedExField suite holders — all men — were granted up-close access to the photo shoots.

One evening, at the end of a 14-hour day that included posing and dance practices, the squad’s director told nine of the 36 cheerleaders that their work was not done. They had a special assignment for the night. Some of the male sponsors had picked them to be personal escorts at a nightclub.

Their participation did not involve sex, the cheerleaders said, but they felt as if the arrangement amounted to “pimping us out.” What bothered them was their team director’s demand that they go as sex symbols to please male sponsors, which they did not believe should be a part of their job.

A spokesman for the N.F.L. said the league office “has no role in how the clubs which have cheerleaders utilize them.” He reiterated a statement the league has issued in response to previous news reports regarding the treatment of cheerleaders: “Our office will work with our clubs in sharing best practices and employment-related processes that will support club cheerleading squads within an appropriate and supportive workplace.”

Many Redskins cheerleaders understand the team’s approach — sex sells — and remain enthusiastic supporters of the team. They said they were troubled, however, when their safety was not taken seriously. There is no league-wide policy for security, or a union to protect them.

A recent contract for Redskins cheerleaders said off-the-field work would include “community and charitable events, youth camps, etc.” There was no mention of having to entertain men who financially support the team, and these appearances raised flags for some cheerleaders.

Rams Biggest Rematch 2018

As great of a season as the Rams had last year there are some serious payback rematches in 2018. Which of these does Rams Nation most want to see the Rams dominate?

SF - payback for taking it to our 2nd string last year at end of season and shutdown the media love-fest for Jimmy G-String and the 69ers
Minn - tight chess match until late 3rd quarter last year; Rams get the Vikings out of the comfort of their home field advantage and make Cry-Baby Zimmer bawl like a baby
Phi - we had them on the ropes last year; late season rematch against a formidable foe for NFC supremacy

Personally I want our Rams to beat the living tar our of SF twice next year and shut down that nonsense!!

Rams Come in at No. 2 on NFL’s Post-Draft Power Rankings

With the initial wave of free agency and the NFL Draft come and past, several teams have positioned themselves for success in the 2018 season.

And while many of a club’s moves throughout the offseason will have no real merit until Week 1 of the regular season, that doesn’t stop sports analysts from beginning to speculate about their outlooks.

With that in mind, below is a roundup of the first wave of Post-Draft NFL Power Rankings for 2018:

The NFL.com’s Elliot Harrison: No. 2

Previous Ranking: No. 6

Change: + 4

“Too high? No way. The Rams did nothing but make their football team better this offseason. They fortified the defense, a group that steadily improved last season, with the additions of veterans Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters and -- since we last completed this exercise -- Ndamukong Suh.

Suh might not have dominated in Miami, but he was far from a bust. Putting him next to Aaron Donald was like parking a 1978 Trans Am with gold trim next to the blue-and-white '69 GTO you've had sitting in your driveway earning Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Trade acquisition Brandin Cooks doesn't exactly "replace" Sammy Watkins at receiver. Different players. Doesn't matter. This offense is gonna rake.”

Bleacher Report: No. 2

Previous Ranking: No. 4

Change: + 2

“The Los Angeles Rams had the best free-agency period of anyone in football. They added Brandin Cooks, Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib and Ndamukong Suh. Those guys join a roster that was already one of the best in football—I could probably stop my analysis there.

Don't be surprised if Jared Goff takes another positive step in Year 3, though. L.A. had an incredibly dangerous offense with him and Todd Gurley at the center of it. The Rams added offensive-line depth in the draft—in the form of tackle Joseph Noteboom and center Brian Allen —and with Cooks replacing Sammy Watkins, that offense could be even better.

With guys like Suh, Talib and Peters joining the defense, it's hard to envision the Rams not being better on that side of the ball, too. No one should be surprised if L.A. is playing in the NFL title game next January.”

FanSided: No.1

Previous Ranking: No. 7

Change: + 6

“The Los Angeles Rams spent their offseason efforts putting together the No. 1 team in our NFL power rankings via trades and free agency. Not the NFL Draft, which is why they didn’t hold a selection until Round 3.

It’s a win-now approach, and all signs point to L.A. trying to do just that. Standout defenders like Ndamukong Suh, Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib as well as wide receiver Brandin Cooks should only serve to improve what was an 11-5 team under first-year head coach Sean McVay a year ago.

Of course, it could all blow up in the Rams’ faces. But not likely.”

Raiders’ Vegas stadium could hit hurdle

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...ajor-threat-to-raiders-vegas-stadium-project/

Nevada gubernatorial candidate makes major threat to Raiders' Vegas stadium project

The city of Las Vegas is full of Raiders fans, and Dan Schwartz may have just given those fans something to think about when it comes to the Nevada gubernatorial election in November.

If Schwartz gets elected, one of his first acts as governor will be to throw a giant wrench into the Raiders' Las Vegas stadium project. Although Schwartz can't overturn the tax increase that the state approved in 2017 for the Raiders stadium, he does have another plan: He's going to veto any project that involves building any roads to the stadium.

"Assuming I'm elected, I cannot interfere with the various contracts that are out there," Schwartz told the Las Vegas Review-Journal this week. "But the governor does control the roads. What I will do is tell them that you can build the $2 billion stadium, but you ain't going to have any roads."

Although the state of Nevada is contributing $750 million in hotel tax money to the new stadium, that doesn't include the cost for infrastructure around the stadium, like new roads. The stadium is being built on the south end of The Strip, just west of Mandalay Bay, and the state is going to have to add freeway on-ramps and off-ramps to ease up congestion on game day.

So how would anyone get to the stadium if there are no roads? In a separate interview, Schwartz said fans can "roller skate" there, for all he cares.

"The state is in charge of the roads. And I can say, 'You want to go to the Raiders stadium? Well, you can get there on roller skates because I ain't building any roads,'" Schwartz said, via the Las Vegas Sun.

Schwartz, who currently serves as the state treasurer in Nevada, wants to see more money go toward education and less money go toward the stadium.

"Why are we taking $750 million in public funds when we have the worst schools in the nation and using it to effectively pay for a stadium for a group of guys who are billionaires?" Schwartz said, via the Sun. "I'm not saying there should not be a stadium. I don't mind building a $1 billion stadium. That's the point. We don't need to spend $2 billion dollars on the Taj Mahal of stadiums."

The final cost of the stadium is currently estimated to be $1.8 billion, with the Raiders chipping in $850 million to go along with $200 million from the NFLand $750 million from the state of Nevada.

For Schwartz to become governor, he'd first have to win the Republican primary on June 12. In a recent poll, Schwartz was trailing Nevada attorney general Adam Laxalt by a substantial margin, although that poll was conducted by Laxalt's team.

The Raiders' stadium has been a hot topic over the past two years, with supporters and detractors on both sides of the aisle. Although Schwartz, a Republican, was against it, the project was actually spearheaded by current governor, Brian Sandoval, who's also a Republican. On the other side of the aisle, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Giunchigliani is also against the Raiders' stadium project, but she's given no indication that she would look to hinder the project if elected. On the Democratic side, Giunchigliani is in a tight race with Clark County commissioner Steve Sisolak, who has been one of the Raiders' biggest supporters.

No Sympathy For Krapernick

Is anyone sick of hearing about the grievance Colin Krapernick has filed against the NFL? I heard that his former team mate Eric Reid has also filed a similar grievance for collusion.

You guys were being paid millions of dollars to represent and play for an NFL team. You went and used your employer's dime to air your personal grievances and chose to make a spectacle out of your protest.

Now NFL teams prefer not to pay for your services.

I have no sympathy for your cause. Thoughts?

About this 2018 Rams Draft...

The more I learn, the more I like. I see logic and planning.

We all knew that getting rookie starters was limited to a LB or two, and even there probably not until midseason, at best. I mean, pick #89 was our starting line, dammit!

What I also see now is intense competition just to make the 53 at multiple position groups because of this draft and UDFA. Always a good thing and common on playoff rosters.

DL
LB
OL
RB

At this point we need to leave every player on the table as a possibility. I will go so far as to predict that we should expect the unexpected.

I strongly suspect that both Kromer and Wade were given wide latitude in prioritizing these draft picks (plus Scales). IOW, these will be the first players that are truly “theirs”. I wouldn’t underestimate how these players might fit within the respective schemes. Not yet, anyway.

I don’t think that the previous paragraph can be overstated.

Gonna be fun to watch how this sorts itself out over the summer.

Denver Broncos decline to pick up Shane Ray's option

With the Wade Phillips connection, Shane Ray is someone we should keep an eye on if he hits FA... He should come relatively cheap

Loaded with pass rushers, the Broncos are preparing for life beyond Shane Ray.

The team is not expected to pick up the outside linebacker's fifth-year option, a source told NFL Network's James Palmer.

A 2015 first-round draft pick, Ray finds himself buried in a crowded position group after Denver used the fifth-overall pick in last week's draft to nab celebrated pass-rushing prospect Bradley Chubb.

With All-Pro Von Miller and the promising Shaq Barrett also in-house, the Broncos are willing to let Ray walk after this season. It's worth noting that Barrett is also set to become an unrestricted free agent, but all four of Denver's top sack-masters are on board for at least one more year.

Ray piled up eight sacks in 2016, but struggled through a wrist injury last season to notch just one takedown over eight appearances. Brought aboard as the heir to DeMarcus Ware, Ray is now learning how fast the scenery changes at the NFL level.

Turning 25 this month, Ray is guaranteed another shot elsewhere if and when he officially hits free agency next offseason. As for the Broncos, it's Miller and Chubb -- deep into the fu

Can we talk about the season tix for a moment?

I had my meeting about the season tix this morning. I was fully expecting a gasp-inducing PSL fee. I wasn't necessarily disappointed as it could have been a lot worse, but it was a chunk.

The part that gave me the biggest pause was the per-seat ticket cost, though. $375 feels like a LOT for a ticket to a football game. It might just be because I've been paying $82.50 per seat a game for the last 3 years, but that number jars me. My rep started talking about how courtside seats to the Lakers are like 4 grand as some sort of comparison point, but it didn't take me much to tear that argument apart. THese seats also don't come with any sort of guarantee to be able to get Super Bowl tickets, even if we're the ones in the game, etc. Hell, not even the food in the executive lounge is free.

What are your thoughts on this? I can't make it to every game, so I'd want to get my money back on games I didn't attend. I'm having a hard time believing that there are going to be a lot of people out there willing to pay $500 per seat last for football (having to account for ticket agency fees). And they force us to buy the 2 preseason games at full price, so that's basically $1,500 a year that will get thrown into a pit and lit on fire, as you can barely give those away.

The PSL fees, I mean, whatever, that's a 0% interest inheritance line-item for my kids, but those per-game costs are really giving me second doubts about going through with it. If you finance the PSL's over 10 years (and since it all comes back, you should), that means we're being asked to sink $1,000 a month over the course of a calendar year just for these tickets.
