Rams at Raiders

It's Game Day!

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember one of our core principles; we always aim to show respect for our team.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad.

Go Rams!

The411

Still have Rams 2x and they are much better than the Vikings

Phoenix49ers

Eagles? With Wentz? Sure. The Rams? Not so much. Vikings have better everything on defense beyond Aaron Donald and have the better QB.

My thoughts so far......

Cowboys, 8.& 8 maybe
Luvme some Fitzpatrick.
Fitzgerald, wish he could win a Super Bowl but not our expense, guess that's not possible.
Marriotta, I give up.
Bradford, conned the entire NFL
Mahomes, real deal, Joe Montana - ish. But lose the '70's head band.
PATS.. Belicheck and Brady... Wow
Don't underestimate the Seahawks.
Kyle Shanahan.... thank God we went with McVay.
Congrats to the Browns but Tyrod is not the answer.
Miami vs Tennessee game.. Zzzzzzzzzzz
Phillip Rivers... Worthless.
Conner to Leveon Bell.... Stay home loser, I got this.
How do you thing Tannahill is the answer?

How Are You Feeling About The Monday Night Opener???

I don't mind saying I'm kind of squeamish about tomorrows game, having not really seen the 1st teams on both sides of the ball play together.

OTOH I feel like McVay definitely has diversified the offense even more...and while it's no doubt this team is improved on paper...especially on the defense...I still have worries with the LBs.

I think the Rams win...but seeing games today...I'm prepared to see the Rams not so finely tuned from the start.

U.S. Open Women's Championship, a.k.a., REFS SUCK.

If you haven't heard by now, Serena Williams probably had a championship robbed from her, and the young woman (Naomi Osaka) who won it all was crying at the end because the idiot ref, Carlos Ramos, decided to give Serena three code violations for increasingly-bullshit reasons.

First, fucking Carlos Ramos issued a coaching violation because the same coach who has been to every one of her matches since he was her coach was in the stands.

Second, fucking Carlos Ramos issued a violation for smashing her racket (like a lot of tennis players have done - both genders, throughout history. That violation causes her to lose a very important point.

So she calls him a thief. That was the last straw for fucking Carlos Ramos. Never mind that Rafael Nadal told fucking Carlos Ramos that he'd make sure that he never did another game (so it's not just Serena that had a problem with him). Never mind that all he needed to do was tone it down, not heat it up.

But did fucking Carlos Ramos do that? LOLNOPE. Third violation for "verbal abuse," and it was a match penalty, which means the title automatically went to Naomi.

Could Serena have handled herself better? Sure. But let's not act like she was the only tennis player in the world to have harsh words for umpires. Let's not act like she's the only tennis player to smash her racket.

And worse still, it ruined the moment for Naomi. Here she is, winning a championship as a twenty-year-old. But this completely mars the moment for her. She didn't want to win like that. Nobody wants to win like that.

Fuck you, Carlos Ramos.

Favorite Coach

Ok, I have a 1a. and a 1b....Wade Phillips and Sean McVay. I'm not talking long term, but Son of Bum is my favorite today. How could you not love the guy? You can tell his players love him, with even Todd Gurley taking an instagram pic with him recently.

When players celebrate with him, they are very gentle because they love the old guy. I remember his Dad, Bum Phillips, when he coached for the Houston Oilers back in the day, with Dan Pastorini, Earl Campbell, and Billy White shoes Johnson. Heck, Wade started singing the Oilers fight song at a press conference two days ago, which I know intimately because I used to attend a lot of Oiler games at the Astrodome in the 70's. I can still see the old electronic game board with with snorting bull, and lyrics as the song was sung.

I appreciate him and will miss him when he's gone.

4 Rams under the most pressure in 2018

4 Rams under the most pressure in 2018
By: Andrew Ortenberg

usatsi_11055306.jpg

Things change so fast in professional football, a player can go from being a star to being out of a job in the blink of an eye. The NFL is unlike any other sport in that regard, and as such there’s intense pressure on every player at every moment.

Due to the lack of guarantees in contracts, most players live with the constant threat of an imminent release. Some rise to the occasion while others fold under it. Here are the four Los Angeles Rams players who are under the most pressure in 2018:

1. Ndamukong Suh
DZP0_qnVAAAbqXC.jpg

Scoopnest.com

Suh made a big bet on himself when he signed a one-year deal with the Rams this offseason. The dominant defensive lineman apparently had bigger offers, but signed in Los Angeles to compete for a championship and re-enter free agency next year. Assuming his play doesn’t fall off, he should be able to land one last big multi-year deal next spring.

But he’ll be 32 by the time free agency rolls around, and if he doesn’t play well this year he might have a hard time drawing big offers. He’s clearly confident in his ability, but he’ll be under a ton of pressure to produce week in and week out, extra motivation that should be comforting to Rams fans.

2. CB Sam Shields
usa_today_10900633.0.jpg

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Shields was able to make the Rams, no small feat after sitting out all of 2017 due to concussion injuries, but his journey back isn’t over yet. He’s only on a one-year deal, and playing behind players that are set in stone in their roles in the secondary. Shields knows that he’s one more head injury from being done, he’s said as much himself, a burden he’ll have to carry with him the whole season.

He’ll be auditioning for all 31 other teams this season while having to constantly think about avoiding head trauma. Aside from concussions, if his play isn’t back to pre-injury form he’ll have a very hard time finding a job next year, already being on the wrong side of 30.

3. RB Malcolm Brown
usa_today_9742189.0.jpg

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Brown remains Todd Gurley’s backup, for now. Fans were continuously excited by the play of John Kelly and even Justin Davis this preseason, and Brown will be on a short leash. If he falters at all during his limited duty, the calls to see more of what Kelly has will only grow louder and louder.

A restricted free agent at the end of the season, if Brown doesn’t show anything right away, 2018 will likely be his last year with the Rams as the team goes younger behind Gurley.

4. WR Josh Reynolds

577663_n.jpg

numberFire

The Rams and coach Sean McVay have insisted the team remains excited about Reynolds’ potential. But he hasn’t shown much on the field, and has fallen way behind on the depth chart. The 2017 fourth-rounder won’t have many opportunities to start the season and will need to make the most of it whenever his name is called.

It’s likely at least one of the trio of Brandin Cooks, Cooper Kupp, or Robert Woods will miss time at some point, and Reynolds will need to step up in a big way to show the coaching staff he should still be a part of the team’s long term plans. If he does nothing in his sophomore season, his roster spot won’t be guaranteed in 2019.

Spare a thought

For us European Rams fans.

The Monday Night Football matchup versus the Raiders is an 0320 kick off In the U.K. and 0420 for the rest of Europe.

I'm booked on an 0600 train to London on Tuesday morning so hoping to catch the final quarter online as I travel.

Steelers-Browns game could be influenced by wild weather

The Steelers-Browns Week 1 game could be influenced by some wild weather

The potentially extreme weather has already had an effect on betting markets
1h ago

As of this writing, we are a little more than 24 hours away from the start of the early games on the first Sunday of the 2018 NFL season. The early-afternoon slate kicks off with eight games, including a high-profile AFC North matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns in Week 1: Picks, how to watch and stream on NFL Sunday(America's most-watched network!).

The major storyline going into the Steelers-Browns game has been the absence of Le'Veon Bell, who still has yet to report to the team after being franchise-tagged this offseason. But there's another story looming: the weather.

Check out this weather alert, found by Dustin Fox of The Athletic:

NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala echoed those weather concerns on Saturday morning, while giving an update on Bell:

The betting public has taken notice of the disaster potential in the weather department.

The over/under for the Steelers-Browns game started at 48 points back in April but it has dropped all the way down to 41 as of Saturday morning. As Under bets poured in, the total dropped a point on September 3, another point on September 5, a half-point on September 6 and from 44 to 41.5 in around six hours on September 7. Clearly, much of the smart money is rolling in on the Under as bettors attempt to take advantage of the potentially extreme weather conditions for the game.

The Steelers remain strong favorites despite both the absence of Bell, who will be replaced by backup James Conner, and the weather forecast. Their expected margin of victory has decreased from the opening line of -7 to just -4.5, however.

How Can You Not Like/Respect Sean McVay?

I get more and more impressed with Coach Sean McVay every time I watch one of his interviews! He is always prepared, very articulate, passionate and seems to have a great relationship with the media and reporters. It also looks and sounds like from the interviews with the Players that they love playing for him and the Assistant Coaches certainly seem to have a huge respect for him and are thrilled to be working for him. I certainly hope he is the a Rams Head Coach for a Very Long Time!
