Plain name, flashy hair -- John Johnson finds star role on Rams' loaded defense

By Lindsey ThiryESPN

http://www.espn.com/blog/nfcwest/po...standing-out-amid-a-defense-filled-with-stars

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- John Johnson III might have a common name, but he hardly blends into a crowd. The 6-foot, 209-pound Los Angeles Rams safety sports braided bleach-blond hair in contrast to his jet-black beard."Easiest color to spot," Johnson said when asked what inspired his hairstyle. "Same reason why cabs in New York are yellow."

Through two games, Johnson and linebacker Cory Littleton are leading the Rams (2-0) in tackles. Johnson had a team-high seven in a shutout against the Arizona Cardinals (0-2). Yet, as several Rams players stood in the locker room conducting media interviews last Sunday, Johnson stood alone as he quietly gathered his belongings.

Flashy hair and all, it's difficult to stand out, let alone gain outside attention, when playing on a defense that includes reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and All-Pro cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib.

But Johnson's productivity is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, and it likely will be on display again Sunday when the Rams host the Los Angeles Chargers (1-1) at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
"He's brought a lot," Rams coach Sean McVay said about Johnson. "He's been really, really good."

In a Week 1 victory over the Oakland Raiders, Johnson initially struggled when matched up with tight end Jared Cook. But Johnson adjusted and, in the second quarter, changed the momentum of the game when he slid in front of Cook and intercepted a deep pass by quarterback Derek Carr in the end zone. The turnover was converted into a field goal in the 33-13 victory.

"Great instincts, great communication, great awareness and he's an excellent tackler," McVay said. "He's a complete safety, and I think he's really started to take a leadership role, especially with just his command of the defense, the understanding." Last Sunday, in a shutout over the Cardinals, Johnson almost single-handedly shut down the Cardinals' opening drive with four tackles in six plays as the Rams' defense limited the Cardinals to 137 total yards of offense.

"Really assignment football, I read my keys and go and just make plays," Johnson said. "But aside from that, different packages I'm used as kind of a linebacker, so they move me around a lot, and I think it's because I have it up top, mentally, and I just have to roam around and make plays."

It didn't take Peters, who was acquired in an offseason trade and has an NFL-best 20 interceptions dating to 2015, long to recognize Johnson's talent."He's gonna be an All-Pro soon," Peters said a week into training camp. "That dude got some knowledge to him, he knows how to play football, he plays fast. That's what you want out of a safety."

The Rams selected Johnson out of Boston College with a third-round pick in 2017. By Week 5 of his rookie season, the team felt comfortable enough with his progress to cut veteran Maurice Alexander and start Johnson alongside Lamarcus Joyner.

Johnson finished the season ranked 17th among all safeties, according to Pro Football Focus. He had 56 tackles, 11 pass deflections and an interception. He was considered a force in both stopping the run and in pass coverage. In defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme, Johnson's responsibilities are plentiful. In the base defense, he's either in man-to-man coverage or in the run game. He's a safety, but he also plays a role similar to a linebacker.

"That safety position, specifically where he's playing, requires and entails a lot of communication based on what the offense is in personnel grouping-wise," McVay said. "You see the versatility that he provides us."

In two games this season, Johnson also has three pass deflections to pair with his interception and 16 tackles. Given the talent Johnson is surrounded by, it's likely he'll have the opportunity to continue to stand out, regardless of his hair color. "Teams are going to try to come at me," Johnson said. "I guess they don't want to go at them, so they're going to come at me, and I just got to keep making plays."

Disney upcoming stream channel: live action Loki, SW, and other shows

Seriously, damn you Disney, not only will they have a live action Star Wars show Jon Favreau is creating now they will have shows about Loki and other Marvel characters with the actual actors from the movies playing them? Just take my money now Disney. Just take it.

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/loki-scarlet-witch-other-marvel-004926447.html

Disney is enlisting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the company prepares to launch its upcoming streaming service. The entertainment giant is in early development on an ambitious plan for a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These series will likely include shows centered on Loki and the Scarlet Witch, along with other beloved superheroes who have yet to appear in their own standalone movies.

Marvel and Disney had no comment.

There’s an important distinction from other Marvel small screen efforts, however. The actors who portrayed these heroes and villains in the Avengers films and their spinoffs, such as Tom Hiddelston and Elizabeth Olsen, are expected to play them in the streaming shows. Moreover, though sources close to the production are staying mum on the cost of the programming, the budgets are expected to be hefty rivaling those of a major studio productions. Each series is expected to include six to eight episodes. Marvel Studios will produce the shows and Kevin Feige, the guru of all things MCU, is expected to take a hands-on role in their development.

The pricey gamble with one of the crown jewels of the Disney film empire is a sign of how much the company has riding on its direct-to-consumer platform. As companies such as Netflix and Amazon continue to grow their user base, Disney is trying to find a way to establish a toehold in the streaming revolution upending Hollywood. The company has kept the details of the service close to the vest, beyond saying that it will likely cost less than Netflix and will launch at some point in late 2019.

Disney has already started to unwind its licensing deals in order to put as much premium content on the platform as possible. That’s meant that the company is forfeiting billions of dollars in profit, as well as shouldering the cost of developing the technology. The company has announced a number of high-profile projects, including a Star Wars series overseen by “Jungle Book” director Jon Favreau, a show based on “High School Musical,” and a live-action “Lady and the Tramp” film. The company also plans to offer several new releases when it launches, including its live-action “Dumbo” film and “Captain Marvel.”

Many of these projects are expensive bets. The Star Wars series will reportedly cost $100 million and the movies are expected to carry budgets north of $25 million. However, Disney has to spend big to make an impression. Netflix, its main rival, has 125 million subscribers globally and has lured top talent like Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”), Kenya Barris (“Black-ish”), and Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”) to its platform with record-setting deals.

The Marvel series are in early development and writers have yet to be attached to the projects. Marvel TV Studios and Disney have been active with shows that include ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and Netflix’s “Daredevil,” but sources say those shows will stay under Marvel TV banner with these limited series set under Marvel Studios.

Storylines for each series are still being teased out, but Disney appears to be holding back some significant fire power for the big screen. Insiders stress the Avengers that have gotten their own movies like Iron Man and Captain America will not be featured in the series with the studios focusing on characters who have served as second tier characters in the MCU.

When all is said and done, the Avengers shows could be the streaming service’s most ambitious project both in terms of their scope and budget. Most important, it gives the service something that will attract comic book fans and represents the type of content Netflix would love to get its hands on.

Rams vs. Chargers feels like..

The playoff games versus the Falcons last year.

While one was a playoff game and one is in week three, here are the similarities as I see them:

1. While it was 11-5 vs 2-0 now, in both cases there was some doubt from the media because we beat up on "bad teams" - although we had several wins against teams with winning records last year, in both cases the perception was similar.

2. Both times the point spread was around 7.

3. Both games will be played at home for the Rams.

4. The Chargers and Falcons are similarly talented but both clearly less talented than the Rams.

5. I felt like the Rams could expose the Falcons interior OL - feel the same about the Chargers.

6. Felt like the Rams had the advantage against their D, feel the same about the Chargers.

7. The Faclons came in and ran the ball, I think the Chargers try the same thing.

Good test for the Rams - I hope we can get it done.

Shields Records First Interception since 2015

https://www.therams.com/news/shields-records-first-interception-since-2015

By Myles Simmons

Making something happen in the preseason was one thing. But getting it done in the regular season is that much more meaningful.

As you likely know, cornerback Sam Shields spent essentially all of the last two seasons out of football. He suffered a concussion during Green Bay’s Week 1 matchup with the Jaguars back in 2016. That was the latest in a string of concussions the 2014 Pro Bowl cornerback had sustained, and he just wasn’t healthy for the rest of the season. Shields then took the 2017 season to get himself right, before signing with the Rams in March.

While corners Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters have — rightfully — received plenty of attention as the starting corners, head coach Sean McVay has consistently praised Shields as another offseason addition who has excelled.

Shields displayed why McVay had been complimentary of him during the club’s third preseason game against the Texans, as Shields recorded an interception deep in opponent territory off quarterback Brandon Weeden.

While Shields has mostly been playing special teams through the first two weeks of the season, he received a defensive opportunity late in the shutout victory over the Cardinals. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Rams inserted their defensive reserves — including Shields at cornerback. At that point, Arizona had managed only three first downs in the entire game.

Shields would keep it that way for at least one more possession, as he intercepted quarterback Sam Bradford on 2nd-and-8 from the Cardinals’ 29-yard line, returning the ball 22 yards to the Arizona 25.
It was a special moment, as Shields’ teammates celebrated the corner’s first pick since December 2015.

“It felt good. Those are the things that we need. We need turnovers for our defense,” Shields said postgame. “It’s a long season, things like that can happen. Guys go down so guys behind them have got to pick it up and go make plays too. That was the definition, that’s how it’s supposed to go.”

Prior to the snap, Shields lined up outside on the defense’s left across from Cardinals wide receiver Chad Williams. Once Williams’ route got going, Shields played underneath the wideout — knowing that he had help over the top from safety Blake Countess. Effectively, Shields finished Williams’ deep-in route for him, intercepting the pass right at the blue and white midfield logo.

“My responsibility is being underneath the receiver, and that’s what happened,” Shields said. “I had protection over the top with Blake [Countess], and we made it happen.”

As Shields illustrated on Sunday, should something happen to one of Los Angeles’ starting corners, the club has depth behind them. And whenever Shields is pressed into duty as the proverbial next man up, he plans to make the most of it.

“It’s just another opportunity, and us as a defense, we’ve got to keep making those opportunities — which we’ve been doing. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

Rams Waive QB Brandon Allen, Cut Two from Practice Squad

Myles Simmons
RAMS INSIDER

The Rams have waived QB Brandon Allen, opening a space on their 53-man roster.

Los Angeles was awarded Allen off waivers at the beginning of the regular season last year, having claimed him when he was cut from Jacksonville. Allen was inactive for the first 14 games of the 2017 season before being placed on injured reserve with a back injury.

Allen played in all four preseason games for L.A. in 2018, completing 33-of-51 passes for 261 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Originally a sixth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2016, Allen is now in his third professional season.

Los Angeles’ roster currently stands at 52 players. Offensive lineman Jamon Brown’s suspension has ended, and he currently has a roster exemption. He will have to be moved to the active roster in order to play in Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

The Rams made two practice squad transactions, cutting tight end Temarrick Hemingway and quarterback Luis Perez. Los Angeles' practice squad currently stands at eight players. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that Allen is a candidate to return to Los Angeles' practice squad should he clear waivers.

Additionally, the Rams hosted three tryout players:

Silberman, Ian (G - Boston College)

Way too early post about new starters...

So, after two games (yeah yeah, prob should ask this after four games), what are your thoughts on the new starters at all positions?

Peters/Talib - really, does anything need to be said here?
Ebukam - can't say I've been blown away. Seems sharp in run defense.
Longacre/Easly - ??
Jonathan Franklin - ??
Blythe - Hard to say he loses his job this week. Just a crazy spectacular surprise there. Always though he looked light in the trunk and could be pushed around due to that. Shows what I know.
Cooks - Everything advertised and more.
Suh - See Cooks post.
Littleton - Not as flashy as Ogletree but a better LB all around.
Wilson - defacto starter as Barron is out. All I can tell is that he's pulled for Christianson in passing situations.
Christianson - seems to be playing well at the ILB/S hybrid role in passing situations.
Shields - he was mentioned, I didn't include cause he's not a starter in base or nickel but what depth!!

Am I missing anyone??

Edit: thanks to those below for additions!

Rams open as 5.5 pt favorites over the Chargers

Sounds about right the way the Rams are playing plus the fact Chargers gain nothing playing in LA right now.
--------------
Oh well, it is what it is. Rams should be favored anyways.
------------
I suspect it will go up a few points.
-----------
the Hams are for real and we make a statement with a convincing win.
without Bosa, I say it’s competitive but we lose.
On D, sell out on Gurley early, make Goff throw over our secondary
on O get Donald and Suh moving sideline to sideline
Set them up to win in the 4th quarter
------------
Sounds about right. Rams have looked really good
------------
Rams won their first game by 20 and 2nd game by 34. Thats a good team.
-------------
Spread up to 7 after the Ram game this afternoon.
------------
Why are we getting that much credit? Weird.
-----------
The Rams are looking really good. I’ll be happy if we can even hang close.
------------
Im hoping for a Rams letdown after they killed AZ
------------
The line looks right to me. Is this an away game for both teams? I know Rams are a better draw than the Chargers given their more recent history in LA and the team wins regularly, but they don't have massive noisy crowds, either. And they play in the Mauseleom don't they?
-----------
If we're still playing for the game when the 4th starts I'll be happy. Wiz is starting to do the mad scientist thing with all his toys. We'll probably be down 17-14 at half, but still in the game.

Hope he has a script this week for the second half to keep up the points. The right side of the line played bad this week. If we get down too far the Rams are going to tear up Rivers like a turkey on Thanksgiving.
------------
The Rams--Falcons playoff game of Jan 6 2018 should be our template.

We will need a balanced offense and several sacks of Goff.

It will require the best, most consistent game, the Chargers have played in several years.

We do possess essentially the same components as ATL.

Doable.
------------
This is Adam Schefter's Super Bowl pick. Let's go and whoop on the Rams, this is a statement game!
------------
Cam Cameron said on FNISD last night that there would be 70+K fans in the stadium. lol.
-----------
This game scares the shit out of me. Being 1 - 2 would suck major huevos especially with KC acting like the freaking Patriots. I too would love to see us head into the fourth quarter in the 7 range, either up or down but with a chance. That is unless they want to start the 4th up by 30.......I'd take that too..........

This is the start of the Cali trifecta for us. We need to be at least 3 - 2 on the other side looking at the Browns on the road.
--------------
Obviously wont be an easy one but we do have the tools to beat them. My biggest concern is Suh and Donald against our interior line, but Peters has also terrorized Rivers the last few years. Keep the game outside the hashes and we should win.
--------------
I just hope Rivers doesnt make dumb throws this game. He always freaks out when he faces Peters.
--------------
Rams will be a really tough matchup. Expect this offense to show up. And the D to be opportunistic. Not having Bosa really hurts. But you cant deny the speed on D is upgraded over last year.
-------------
Offensively we need to be creative and unpredictable against the Shams! Their edge players are avg but that IDL is great. We need to run a ton of 6 man protections and stretch them horizontally and vertically. Our screen game needs to be on point and be able to get the edge in the run game early. Tire them out and then take their will to compete/live in the 4th quarter.

Defensively we must be aggressive and take away Gurley in both run & pass games. Inside push to make Goff uncomfortable and make him beat us with his arm. Cooks is their big threat vertically outside but the rest of their WRs can be handled with our physical CBS.

If both teams play well it should be a very competitive fun game.
----------------
This is gonna be a exciting game to see what this team is really made of. I think there should be a decent amount of charger fans there too. The rams are the better team on paper but this will show us if Lynn, Wiz, and Bradley have what it takes to develop a good game plan. I really hope Eke gets his fair of touches as the guy has shown that he can flat out play and fight for extra yards. Get Mike Will the ball in the end zone as well

I see this game being close until the 4th qrt as it should be on paper. Well see if Lynn can keep his team focused the whole game
--------------
It will be a fun and telling game for sure. But not having Bosa really hurts us in a huge way. I like when we are huge underdogs though. Im just less stressed out about the game. lol
-------------
I think both Bradley and Lynn have gained trust in our young rookies -- Darwin, Nwosu, and White -- and they've gained confidence in themselves. Each game they've played this season has been better than the last. They're in game-shape now, and have live game experience in the NFL.

This could be scary for the Rams.
-------------
The one thing that really scares me about the Rams game is our beat up oline against their dline. Rivers isn't going to have a lot of time in the pocket so it sounds like the game for Allen to go off.

Dickerson, Warner, Faulk, And Other NFL Hall Of Famers Demand Health Insurance And Salaries

Letter From NFL Hall Of Famers Demands Health Insurance, But Only For Themselves
Laura Wagner

In a letter sent Tuesday to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith, and Pro Football Hall of Fame president C. David Baker, players who make up the Hall of Fame board are demanding health insurance and salaries for former NFL players now in the Hall of Fame.

As ESPN’s Arash Markazi first reported, the letter threatens a boycott of the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony until the league meets these demands.

The letter opens:

“We, the undersigned Pro Football Hall of Famers, were integral to the creation of the modern NFL, which in 2017 generated $14 billion in revenue. But when the league enshrined us as the greatest ever to play America’s most popular sport, they gave us a gold jacket, a bust and a ring — and that was it.

“People know us from our highlight reels. They see us honored and mythologized before games and at halftime, and it would be reasonable if they thought life was good for us. But on balance, it’s not. As a group we are struggling with severe health and financial problems. To build this game, we sacrificed our bodies. In many cases, and despite the fact that we were led to believe otherwise, we sacrificed our minds.

“We believe we deserve more. We write to demand two things: Health insurance and annual salary for all Hall of Famers that includes a share of league revenue.”

The letter goes on to point out that MLB players, even those who only appear on a major league roster for one day, are guaranteed health insurance for the rest of their lives. If baseball players are on a major league roster for 43 days, they are entitled to a lifelong pension. In the NFL, players only receive health insurance for five years after they finish playing, and only if they are vested in the player Retirement Plan.

The letter says that “the total cost for every Hall of Famer to have health insurance is less than $4 million—less than that of a 30-second Super Bowl ad, or about 3 cents for every $100 the league generates in revenue,” and goes on to describe what it sees as wasteful spending: Goodell’s $200 million contact and the construction of a $1 billion new Hall of Fame Village.

The letter is signed by Hall of Fame board chairman Eric Dickerson, plus board members Marcus Allen, Mel Blount, Derrick Brooks, Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Richard Dent, Carl Eller, Marshall Faulk, Mike Haynes, Rickey Jackson, Ronnie Lott, Curtis Martin, Joe Namath, John Randle, Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Jackie Smith, Lawrence Taylor, Kurt Warner; and Sarah White, Reggie White’s widow.

As noted on Pro Football Talk, one of the signees, Taylor, crossed the picket line in 1987 when players were striking for better conditions, including fuller retirement benefits. PFT writes that “it’s very convenient of Taylor to care about this issue now that he’s retired, even though he undermined the issue when he was an active player and was in a better position to effect change.”

Were the players’ demands fulfilled, they would benefit only a very small portion of former football players: Hall of Famers. These players, who made the most money while they were playing and also have the greatest capacity to make money off endorsements and autograph signings in retirement, are among the least vulnerable.

The players’ lack of solidarity with their former teammates, many of whom are also suffering physically, mentally, and financially, and who undoubtedly made the Hall of Famers’ careers possible, undercuts the letter’s message.

Our opponents seem to have “picked their poison”...

It appears that our opponents have consciously chosen to minimize elapsed time from snap to throw in order to partially neutralize our front 7 pass rush.

They have tried to run the ball also to keep our pass rush honest and to try to increase their TOP which would keep our O off the field.

And we will probably see more of the same in the future despite the lack of great success by the Raiders and Cards.

The problem for opponents is that they must virtually concede a consistent passing deep threat and they allow Wade to sub in the likes of Shields and Christian, among others.

It’s a fascinating chess game, so far. I’m guessing that the Chargers and Vikings might have other, and more effective strategies, but we’ll see.

It will still always come down to whether a given opponent chooses to challenge our DL or our secondary, huh? I see the Rams winning more than their fair share of those battles.

Like I said, a weekly pick-your-poison decision for each opponent.

So, we may not be seeing the anticipated sacks this year, but we will probably see an outstanding reduction in points allowed in exchange. I’ll take it.

Wow, the SeaHags...are not good

I watched a good portion of the game last night. I would say that the Hags and the Giants have some things in common, but the biggest would be lack of an offensive line.
Ouch. I watched the Giants a bit on Sunday night, and the offensive line was bad. That made Eli look extra bad - he seemed to make little effort to get out of the way of traffic (not that he's particularly athletic anyway).

But after watching the Hags last night - Wilson looked the same as Manning, save for a little better movement to avoid some of the initial hits.

That got me thinking - it's one thing to know where your week link is, and then plan around that. But when EVERY LINK is a potentially week link...you just don't know where the pressure will come from. That can definitely make a QB look worse than he actually is.

I'm soooo glad the Rams finally have a good Oline. Goff is able to survey the field...it reminds me of the way Kenny Stabler used to stand back there like a statue and just look over the land and pick where his best option was. :yess:

Carson Wentz cleared to return, will start Sunday

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...son-wentz-cleared-to-return-will-start-sunday

Carson Wentz cleared to return, will start Sunday

Carson Wentz is back.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced Monday that Wentz has been medically cleared and will start Week 3 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

"He's ready, ready to take the reins again and move forward," coach Doug Pederson said Monday.

Sunday will mark the first time Wentz will see the field since tearing his ACL and LCL on Dec. 10, 2017.

The Eagles were patient in bringing back their MVP candidate following knee surgery. Wentz participated early in training camp with the team optimistic he would return for the opener. The quarterback, however, was not medically cleared for contact until Monday.

The Eagles owned the luxury of deploying Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles to open the season, allowing them to tread carefully with Wentz's return.

After two weeks watching an up-and-down Foles lead the Eagles to a 1-1 start while averaging 5.5 yards per attempt and a 78.9 passer rating, Wentz is back under center. The Eagles squeaked by the Falcons in the opener and fell to the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Pederson said he has no plans to hold Wentz back, expects no limitations, and won't "coach scared" with the QB returning from injury.

"He's going to be prepared mentally, now it's a matter of the physical part taking over," Pederson said. "... In my mind, he's cleared, he's cleared. No need to hold back."

Wentz's return will provide a much-needed boost to the Eagles offense that struggled with consistency under Foles. How long it takes Wentz to shake off the rust remains to be seen.

"I think there's going to be maybe an issue or two. It's going to take some time to get back into the rhythm of the flow of game," Pederson said. "The speed of the game is different than the speed of practice. So we do everything we can to try to simulate that during the week and try to prepare him that way.

"He's going to be prepared mentally. Now it's just a matter of the physical part taking over."

When last we saw Wentz on the field, the 25-year-old quarterback was performing at an MVP-level, making breathtaking throws, and using Houdini-like magic to escape rushes.

One issue Wentz must overcome in his return is a battered Eagles receiving corps. Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) remains week-to-week, Pederson said Monday. Mike Wallace fractured his fibula in Sunday's game and is out an undetermined about of time. And Mack Hollins is on IR with a groin issue.

The injuries mean beyond Nelson Agholor, there isn't much in the receiver corps for Wentz to rely on in his return. Kamar Aiken, DeAndre Carter and Shelton Gibson are currently the top receivers in line for outside snaps. It wouldn't be a surprise if Philly looked to bring in help this week.

With the injuries to the receivers, Wentz will look to attack with favorite target Zach Ertz, rookie tight end Dallas Goedert and running back Corey Clement.

Wentz isn't a panacea for all that ills the Eagles' offense, but it sure will be good to see the wunderkind back on the field.
