Last 2 games Rams look like a 1 & done playoff team

Several members on various messages board forums and NFL media expert talking heads have given the impression that the Rams are one and done playoff contenders.

It seems like some in that group believe the Rams might win their first playoff game but they are just a little bit too flawed to run the table when the single elimination tournament begins in January.

Those that are still on the fence need to see how the Rams perform against the Cardinals and 49ers before they make their final predictions.

I have watched the Bears and Eagles games several times and even though they were painful to watch outcomes, I feel the same as I did 3 weeks ago.

To me, the Rams are still the best team in the NFL but it's by a very tiny slim margin.

Should they lose to either Arizona or the San Francisco in these last two weeks, I will eat my words and recognize that I don't know this team as well as I think I do.

I will try to keep up on these. It may not be daily and I will also probably be posting some trivia from the NFL as a whole. Good luck and have fun.

Note: These questions will change almost daily. I will unsticky them as soon as I post the answer.

OK so here is the deal. Years ago I found an LA Rams Trivia Game in a Goodwill. I pretty much bought it as a piece of memorabilia. Now with the Rams moving back, I thought it might make for a fun game for some of us old timers. Odd thing is that about 70% of the questions have nothing to do with the Rams.

So here is what I will do. I will post the questions that are Rams related and let you guys answer. I will then post the answers the next day. These are not easy questions as far as I can tell but maybe the memory function of my brain has been compromised.

There is only basically one rule. No search engines or internet sites to look up answers that you will post later. I realize some will still look up the answers. I know I would if I didn't have the cards. But I want to see how many out there actually know the answers. So if you do feel like looking them up on the internet, feel free.

And if you know the answer, don't post it. Comment all you want.

Now - keep in mind. I said the internet is off limits. But if you have books, magazines, football cards, etc... feel free to use them. That may seem hypocritical but it's about time some of us got some use out of all that stuff we've bought over the years.

Saturday Games Week 16

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25576095/bright-spots-16-nfl-teams-playoff-picture-2018

Redskins (7-7) at Titans (8-6): 4:30 p.m. ET, NFL Network
Point spread: TEN -10.5 | Matchup quality: 40.6 (of 100)

John Keim's pick: Since Week 9, the Redskins have committed a league-high 50 penalties on offense, 14 more than anyone else. It leaves them in negative situations and, with a banged-up crew, unable to recover. In the past three weeks, the Titans have held opposing offenses to 280 yards or fewer each time; in that same period, the Redskins' offense has been held to 288 yards or fewer each game. Washington has lost too many key players on offense to hang with a good team. Titans 27, Redskins 14

Turron Davenport's pick: The Titans are riding Derrick Henry's hot streak of 408 rushing yards over the past two games. Washington's run defense is allowing 116.6 rushing yards per game this season, so it will be another prime opportunity for Henry. Tennessee is playing outstanding football in all three phases over its past three games, outscoring opponents 73-31, and the defense is tied with the Ravens for the top spot in points allowed (18.1 per game). Both teams need this game, but the Titans are more realistic playoff contenders. Titans 25, Redskins 14

What's at stake: The Redskins can't clinch a playoff spot in Week 16, but they could be eliminated with either a loss and an Eagles win, or a loss and wins by the Seahawks and Vikings. The Titans are in the same boat. They can't clinch but can be eliminated by a loss along with wins by the Steelers and Ravens. -- Seifert

FPI win projection: TEN, 75.7 percent. Tennessee can nose its playoff probability to just over 50 percent with a victory, while a Washington win would get the Redskins closer to a 1-in-3 chance. Losses would drop them to 10 and 4 percent, respectively.

———

Ravens (8-6) at Chargers (11-3): 8:20 p.m. ET, NFL Network
Point spread: LAC -4.5 | Matchup quality: 60.6 (of 100)

Jamison Hensley's pick: The Ravens have to go cross-country on a short week, and the Chargers play at home on eight days' rest. This isn't an ideal situation for Baltimore, especially when considering the Ravens' history. Since 2013, Baltimore is 1-6 when playing on the road against teams from the AFC and NFC West. Chargers 23, Ravens 13

Eric D. Williams' pick: The Chargers get back two key players in running back Melvin Gordon and nose tackle Brandon Mebane. So expect the Bolts to pound the football on offense and crowd the line of scrimmage defensively, forcing Lamar Jackson to push the ball down the field. Jackson has fumbled an NFL-high seven times since Week 11, losing three of those, and this defense is primed for takeaways. Chargers 28, Ravens 20

What's at stake: The Chargers already have clinched a playoff berth, but they can keep their AFC West title hopes alive with a win. The Ravens can't clinch a wild-card berth this weekend but they would be eliminated with a loss and wins by the Steelers and Titans. -- Seifert

FPI win projection: LAC, 79.5 percent. The Ravens might currently hold the final wild-card spot in the AFC, but that could change dramatically if they can't upset the Chargers on Saturday night. A Ravens victory gets them up to an 82 percent chance to make the playoffs, while a loss drops them to just 16 percent, the largest possible swing of the week. A win for the Chargers gets L.A. up to a 34 percent chance to earn a bye, while a loss drops it to 2 percent.

Former G Alex Boone reveals how to block Donald and Suh

Apologies in advance for posting anything by Mike Florio but thought this would stir up some discussion.

Begins at 19:33

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...rly-on-that-ndamukong-wasnt-the-same-old-suh/

Supposedly Fowler was signed because the Rams realized Suh isn't the same player he was years ago. Duh! Also DE Jerry Hughes was their first choice but the Rams couldn't work out a deal with Buffalo before the deadline.

Foe those who aren't able to watch the video, here's the gist of it. AD needs to be double-teamed at all times. Double duh! The reason that hasn't happened until recently, according to Alex Boone, is because of ego.

Suh is nothing more than a bull-rusher who has no other moves. "Bully the bully and you win."

Rams miss Robert Quinn

Initially I was in favor of releasing Robert Quinn because he seemed to be injury prone and not having the same impact as he did in the past. It looks like I was wrong and he has been rejuvenated.

Rams among league leaders in pass-block, pass-rush win rate
By: Cameron DaSilva

gettyimages-1052710764.jpg

Much has been made about the Los Angeles Rams’ recent struggles to rush the passer – outside of Aaron Donald – and protect Jared Goff. They’re both very warranted concerns, but over the course of the entire season, the Rams’ offensive line has been great.

Additionally, the defense is still overly reliant on Donald as a pass rusher, but his dominance up front makes up for a lot of the Rams’ inefficiencies on the edge.

ESPN created new metrics this season called pass-rush and pass-block win rate. Essentially, it measures how often a pass rusher or offensive lineman wins his battle against the guy across from him by either holding a block for 2.5-plus seconds or beating a block in under 2.5 seconds.

The Rams don’t have any representatives in the OLB/DE category, but to no one’s surprise, Donald is at the top of the list for defensive tackles. he has a win rate of 42 percent, which is substantially higher than the next-closest player, Chris Jones (35 percent). Strangely enough, Robert Quinn is No. 1 among edge rushers at 40 percent.

On the offensive side of the ball, Andrew Whitworth is first among tackles with a win rate of 92 percent. Right tackle Rob Havenstein isn’t far behind at 87 percent, good for 10th in the NFL. At guard, Austin Blythe doesn’t make the list, but Rodger Saffold – a Pro Bowl snub – is third with a win rate of 88 percent.

usatsi_11340892.jpg

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The most surprising player on the list is John Sullivan, who’s had a down year by his standards. He’s fifth among centers at 86 percent.

As a team, the Rams are No. 1 in pass-block win rate (62 percent) three points ahead of the next-closest team, the Browns. That number has certainly dipped in the past three weeks with Goff getting pressured fairly often, but it’s telling that the Rams are still at the top of the list.

Defensively, only the Panthers have a higher pass-rush win rate (62 percent) than the Rams (59 percent). A large portion of that is thanks to Donald, but L.A. is getting plenty of pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Rams-Eagles Game report from the Coliseum (long)

Spent the weekend in LA with an old friend. Here’s my (longish) report:

Sat eve: Went to a Comedy Store event to benefit CA firefighters. Some big names like David Spade, Anthony Jeselnik, Marc Maron, Jeff Ross, Dave Attell, Nicki Glaser. Dinner was Korean Bulgogi BBQ and then Indian food. Delicious, but, ouch. Maybe I’m gettin’ old, but I wasn’t prepared for the FREAK SHOW that is Hollywood on a late Saturday night.

Observations from game day: I always enjoy seeing the Rams live and in-person-- even when they lose. However…

--The Coliseum is a dump. Main problem IMHO is the lack of space on the concourses. Halftime was a mosh pit, people jammed together like sardines. If you want to take a piss and get a beer, be prepared to wait a full half-hour to get through the crush of humanity. The new stadium will definitely help our home-field advantage IMO.

--Great Rams fan energy, especially in the first half. Last home game I attended was vs. the Bills in 2016, and the atmosphere last Sunday night was on a whole other level.

--Personally, I cannot stand the “Who’s House? Rams house!” cheer. Doesn’t seem like fans even enjoy saying it much. Wish they’d come up with a new one.

--Completely wasted Rams fan chick behind me, screaming and slurring, “Come on Rams, kick ‘em in the fucking nuts!” Like the passion, but she was obnoxious…thankfully she moved after the first quarter.

--Sat near two very friendly Eagles fans. My question to one of them: “would you still take Wentz over Goff?” He gave the diplomatic answer that “Wentz was a better fit for the Eagles, Goff a better fit for the Rams.” Interestingly, he said, “Goff is so soft-spoken, the Philly media would eat him alive.”

--Disappointed that they lost of course, but glad to attend a thrilling game that went down to the last second. What can I say—seeing the Rams live, in their old-school B&Y’s, always gives me a rush of nostalgia.

Game notes:

--Biggest play that sticks out was the Philly long-bomb where TWO receivers were wide open deep. I have never, ever in my life seen a busted coverage that bad. It looked like there were two punt returners just sitting there, waiting.

--Even from the stands I could see Saffold should’ve gotten the call on defensive encroachment.

--Play of the game IMHO was when Gurley failed to step out of bounds with twenty seconds left. Yes, plenty of blame to go around, but that one play was critical. Instead of one last gasp play from the 18, we could have had three plays from the 20.

--A play that drove me NUTS was when Joyner tackled the Philly RB with 2:43 on the clock. (I went home to check out the replay, and yes, the RB hit the ground at 2:43). With the 40-second play clock, the Eagles SHOULD have been forced to run another play before the 2:00 warning. Rams could’ve gotten the ball back at about 1:53, instead of 1:08. Rams play-clock operator needs to help with our home-field advantage, and not wait FOUR SECONDS to do his job!

--Philly fans started celebrating early after the Natson fumble. When they missed the kick, and the Rams were driving, the Iggle fans were totally freaking out. Wish we had pulled off the comeback…

Alright, that’s all I got for now. The wife and I are going to the first Rams playoff game… I’m expecting a great atmosphere, can’t wait!

If we keep Wade, we should overhaul the defensive staff

I'm assuming that Wade stays, but I wouldn't be upset if the Rams pursued Todd Bowles or Ron Rivera/Steve Wilks if they're fired this off-season. However, assuming Wade stays, I think we need to overhaul our assistants on the defensive side of the ball. I've been underwhelmed by our player development there.

It probably won't happen, but I think the Broncos firing Vance Joseph would give us an incredible opportunity. Looking at their coaching staff, there are three assistants who worked under Wade in Denver that I want here. Those three assistants are:
DL Coach Bill Kollar
LB Coach Reggie Herring
DB Coach (now DC) Joe Woods

I'd like to keep Aubrey Pleasant on our staff, so I would hope Woods and him could split the work in the secondary. I'd let Joe Barry and Bill Johnson go. I look at the work those guys did in Denver, and I think we'd see better player development here. I know Sean is loyal to his staff, but I am disappointed with the defensive performance right now. There are too many players who have either regressed or not progressed enough.

Josh Gordon is finished

He's says he is stepping away from the game to focus on his mental health.

I don't think that's his real issue.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles...om&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial

According to NFL Network'sTom Pelissero, Gordon is facing an indefinite suspension by the NFL for "violating terms of his reinstatement under the substance abuse policy." ESPN's Adam Schefter added: "Final punishment yet to be decided, but Gordon not expected to play again this season or maybe ever again."

I don't care that he smokes weed, and I don't think the current NFL policy will be around forever considering the legality of weed in many states. It's become out dated.

What bothered me when I read this is that he is blaming his immaturity, lack of self control and stupidity on a mental health issue.

What a waste of tremendous talent..........but I can't say I am shocked one bit. It's no wonder he and Manziel became friends.

Is it time to hold Wade accountable?

Wade seems like a player's coach, a likable old sage that's a father figure (or grandfather) to most of these guys. Sure, he has 40 years of coaching experience, but at some point, don't we have to start holding him accountable for this terrible defense filled with players who have starred elsewhere? Where are the unique looks, the exotic blitzes, the pressure on the quarterback that we should be generating? Where has Brockers gone the last month? Suh? Why have I seen, game after game, plays where the opposing running back runs right into the 4 or 5 hole and we don't even have a linebacker in the gap? How do two Eagle receivers get past our secondary on the same play for a game-changing play? How does Peters stand and watch a guy run into the end zone from five yards out? Where is the discipline on this unit?

There was a drive in the Eagles game, at the end of the third or beginning of the fourth, where the Eagles simply ran or passed for 5-8 yards every play while our defense just stood there and watched them drive down the field. Wade's bend-but-don't-break defense is getting this team beat. Forget Jared and the offense, I have faith they'll fix their issues. They've proven that they can be a first-class unit in this league. So far, I haven't seen anything like that from our defense. It's time Wade takes a look at his scheme and players and makes a few changes.

new focus

Things have not looked good the last few games for sure.

But here is what I think should be the focus for the remainder of the season.

Win the next 2.

13-3 is an improvemnt over 11-5 - that's moving the right direction.

Win at least one playoff game.

If these things happen I'll be satisfied with the season.

My expectations have lessened but they are still high - in that I think less than that is not enough.

Winning a playoff game is important.

Kyle Turley

Some excerpts from this long article about Kyle Turley's time with the Rams and his dealings with Jay Zygmunt and Mike Martz. To read the whole article click the link below.

The Ugly End of an All-Pro Career, the Uglier Start of a Life After Football
By ANDY BENOIT

Simon Bruty

Turley, nearing the end of his rookie contract, had been a negotiating a long-term deal with the Saints. But when GM Randy Mueller was fired and Mickey Loomis took over, things changed—Loomis and head coach Jim Haslett put Turley on the trading block. Just days after he and Stacy were married, he was dealt to St. Louis for a second-round pick.

As part of the trade, he received a new five-year, $26 million deal, with $12 million guaranteed. The money was helpful—much of his first contract’s earnings had been spent on lawyers and private investigators from his first marriage.

A rival of the Rams while with the Saints, Turley had been leery of their head coach, Mike Martz. The magnitude of the trade left him encouraged for their relationship, but he later came to believe that it was actually Rams GM Jay Zygmunt who pushed for his acquisition.

Martz’s system demanded a lot of offensive tackles. Turley played well that first year, 2003, but in Week 7 against Green Bay, he was knocked out with a concussion. The FOX announcers remarked that even the smelling salts weren’t waking him. Stacy says she had been instructed to take Kyle home after the game.

In the tunnel she came across Packers defensive end Joe Johnson, who played with Turley in New Orleans. “Stacy, KT is really f---ed up,” Johnson said. “Take him to a hospital!” Panicked, Stacy found a stadium police officer to drive them, sirens on.

A scan revealed dark masses on Turley’s brain. Doctors shrugged. That’s just what you get with football players. Two days later Turley was back at practice. To make sure he was O.K., the Rams had him sustain bull rushes from defensive end Leonard Little. “Just to see if I could stay conscious,” Turley says. “That was the test back then.” He didn’t miss a game.

Stacy would come to look back on her husband’s brain scan through a very different light, but at the time, she was more worried about the rest of his body. Besides football’s usual wear and tear, he had a back problem that sent pain down his leg.

Turley was prescribed a litany of medications—painkillers, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, sleep aides, etc.—and finished out the season. St. Louis went 12-4 but lost to Carolina in the divisional round.

image

Simon Bruty

Two weeks later Kyle was off most of the medications. One day Stacy heard him shouting from the bathroom, panicking at the site of his atrophied right buttocks, hanging down by his hamstring like a deflated balloon. He had back surgery, and suddenly his mission shifted from chasing Pro Bowls to just getting healthy.

It became a grueling journey, with a few ups but mostly debilitating downs. He was with his teammates often in 2004 but never got on the field. His rehab remained arduous. When asked about Turley at a press conference, Martz said he didn’t know if Turley even wanted to play football. Kyle and Stacy were furious.

Soon after, Turley met with Martz. Turley claims the head coach accused him of coming to St. Louis to take the money and run. Turley became volatile, said his piece and stormed out. Before he got home, Stacy got a call from her dad. “What did Kyle do?!” he asked.

That’s how she learned her husband’s name was ticking across the bottom of ESPN screens, with a report saying he had threatened his head coach’s life. (Kyle and Stacy refute this, saying that Turley had immediately told Zygmunt of their argument. They believe the only way the story could have gotten out so quickly was by Martz taking it to the media himself.)

Martz remembers it differently. “I never accused him of taking the money and running,” he said when reached by phone. Martz said he and Zygmunt were not communicating well. “There was a certain dishonesty that was in the front office that I had to deal with for a number of years,” As Martz tells it, “Kyle did a great job for us and then he got injured.

After that, he just disappeared. I couldn’t get any information when he was coming back. Couldn’t find him anywhere. Couldn’t reach him. When I asked Jay [Zygmunt] about it, he said he didn’t know either. The obvious part to that is Jay knew exactly what was going on [with Kyle]. I just couldn’t know.

“Kyle was upset with me because he assumed I knew what was going on with him and I didn’t. He accused me of not caring, all those things. I’m looking at him thinking, ‘What is this all about?’ I just let him vent, which everybody in the whole building heard.”

That was the last time Martz ever saw Turley. Even after the ugly episode, Turley was jolted when then Rams cut him after the 2004 season. He’d been working so hard to get healthy. As an NFLPA rep, having negotiated on various league matters, he’d grown to suspect that the NFL was strictly a cutthroat business, that players were just commodities.

Now that was confirmed. The realization did not strike Turley lightly; he is a deep, passionate thinker. Battered and disillusioned, he was 29 and already facing a post-football life.

Could the Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl window already be closing?

Could the Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl window already be closing?
By Sean Wilkinson
An aging OL and poor QB play may sink 2018, but the Rams might have bigger problems in the not too distant future
https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2018/...per-bowl-window-closing-jared-goff-sean-mcvay

With a flurry of acquisitions this spring, the Los Angeles Rams firmly pushed all of their chips to the center of the table for Super Bowl 53. They weren’t shy about it either, relishing in the media attention that it brought the team.

Nine months later and the 2018 Rams are at a crossroads that their 11-3 record fails to portray. The combination of consecutive losses, injuries, and poor play by key players has us rightfully questioning the Rams viability as a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season. Me? I’m looking at the bigger picture. I’m questioning whether the window that Les Snead and the Rams front office opened this spring is already closing on Sean McVay.

Father Time and the OL
The Rams offense is built on the backs of the offensive line. When they are playing well, Todd Gurley has gaping holes to run through and Jared Goff’s jersey is clean at the end of the day. When they aren’t, the offense gets ugly in a hurry.

The OL isn’t getting any younger either. The average age of the Rams starters is 30.4 and 4 of those 5 are not under contract past 2019. The Rams have rebuilt their OL several times in recent years, but the coming re-work is going to have a profound impact on the future of the franchise.

If the Rams can’t seamlessly rebuild the unit over the next 15 months, they could see Goff permanently devolve into what we’ve seen over the course of the Rams last two losses - which would close the Super Bowl window as emphatically as it was opened this spring.

Roster Turnover
Yes, I’m aware that the bottom half of most NFL rosters turns over from year to year. No, that’s not what I’m referring to here.Take a look at the list of starters who will be looking for new contracts soon.
Skill Positions:
Jared Goff: Contract year (pending 5th year option)

OL:
Andrew Whitworth: Contract year
Rodger Saffold: Unrestricted Free Agent
John Sullivan: Contract year
Austin Blythe: Contract year
DL:
Ndomukong Suh: Unrestricted Free Agent
Michael Brockers: Contract Year
LB:
Dante Fowler Jr.: Unrestricted Free Agent
Mark Barron: Potential Cap Casualty
DB:
Lamarcus Joyner: Unrestricted Free Agent
Aqib Talib: Contract year
Marcus Peters: Contract year
Specialist:
Cory Littleton: Restricted Free Agent
Greg Zuerlein: Contract year

That’s half of the Rams current starters that are coming due for contracts, plus a couple of specialists to boot. That’s a double edged sword. It gives the team a TON of financial flexibility, but also puts the pressure on the front office to retain the right players.

You simply can’t pay Aaron Donald AND Ndomukong Suh AND Marcus Peters AND Lamarcus Joyner. That’s not even considering Jared Goff or the aforementioned OL rework that needs to happen.

Some of these decisions will be easier than others. Suh was clearly brought in as a mercenary for 2018. The same could be said for Talib if the Rams decide to cut him loose after the season. Peters probably deserves a deal, but the Rams track record with paying DBs is.... not great. So not only will Les Snead and Co. have to retain the right players to form the core of this team, they’ll have to do it while simultaneously rebuilding the OL and figuring out if Goff is worth $25-30M per year. That won’t be an easy task.

Jared Goff
We’ve reached the elephant in the room. Who is the real Jared Goff? Until a few weeks ago, we were all certain that Sean McVay had him on a path to be an elite NFL QB - or at least close to it. As Goff returned to his mistake laden form that he showed as a rookie, we’re left to ponder whether the last few weeks are an anomaly or the beginning of a trend.

I don’t need to tell you that Goff’s been bad since the bye week. You already know that. But I can honestly say that I’ve been concerned about Goff’s accuracy for most of the season. It’s little mistakes like not leading a receiver enough, or slightly missing a window. Timing being off or mis-reading a defense and missing a potential explosive play.

Those kinds of mistakes aren’t critically analyzed when you’re scoring 30+ points on a regular basis. They’re still worth noting, but since the offense was achieving the desired outcomes... it was largely dismissed as a weakness of Goff’s and not a damning critical flaw.

These issues become exacerbated and a much bigger detriment to the team when Goff is under pressure. When he is consistently put under pressure, Goff has been horrid. He makes bad decisions, becomes inaccurate, and costs the Rams football games. With the Rams OL inevitably getting a rebuild in the next couple of offseasons, this is extremely concerning to me.

The Rams will undoubtedly pick up Goff’s 5th year option in a few months, buying them another year to determine whether he is the long-term answer for the franchise. And while the front office will play a significant role in forming the Rams future, the Rams franchise QB is ultimately who will determine how long this window will be open - for better or worse.

Right Now Feels Like A Losing Season

Yeah 11 wins and two games to go, this team feels like an impostor to me right now. This is not the team that was playing before KC that wore Horns. I'd get angry when someone called us soft or the slightly nicer term, finesse. But what can you say with how we've been socked in the mouth and did nothing about it? Kupp was a tough SOB, and always seeming to either get open, or make the tough catch when we actually had to have it, and we don't have that now. Woods is really darn good at clutch catches too, but something about Kupp and Goff, you just knew they would get it done. Now? Any pass over 20 yards feels like a hail mary.

In the Fisher years, we sucked, but we at least had a really good defense. We still have Aaron Freakin Donald, but we don't have Robert Quinn and even our mermaid man, Will Hayes...Brockers was really good then, but I don't know who the guys is now wearing his jersey. I like the 4-3 better than the 3-4, sorry Wade. I find myself ignoring the plays except for watching what Aaron Donald does during a play when he's on the field. At least I can watch greatness, while doing that. I did it under Fisher, and unhappily, it's what I have now with this floundering team.

Yep, I'll watch the rest of the games. Maybe McVay can pull us out of the nose dive. Until then, I'm watching AD.
