OL Coleman Shelton

Login to view embedded media View: https://twitter.com/vinnybonsignore/status/1168607928447750144?s=21

COLEMAN SHELTON

Overview

Shelton fits the average height/weight profile for the position, but his lack of desired play strength and overall anchor is a concern. Shelton's technique is solid and his initial quickness is good enough, but he needs to do a better job of gaining and maintaining positioning if he wants to find a way to cover up for his lack of necessary power and land NFL playing time.

Strengths
  • Three-year starter with some starting experience at tackle, guard and center
  • Adequate athlete
  • Has enough initial quickness to compete for positioning on scoop blocks
  • Takes choppy, controlled steps up to second level target
  • Maintains width of his base as run and pass blocker
  • Plays with good strength in his hands
  • Has smooth pass sets to his target and can mirror effectively
  • Shoots his hands with short, efficient punch and does a good job of maintaining proper back and head posture throughout the rep
  • Technique is generally solid
Weaknesses
  • Lack of desired play strength is evident too often on tape
  • Has below average upper body strength and struggles to keep blocks centered
  • Can be jostled by power allowing defenders to escape block security and squeeze rushing lanes
  • Doesn't have desired acceleration to stay out front of running back on long pulls
  • Unlikely to be one-on-one block winner at NFL level
  • Legs won't generate much push as a down or drive blocker
  • Despite solid technique, simply doesn't have enough anchor to keep bull rushers from walking him back into the pocket

Three, maybe four, players’ Rams future may be quite “fluid”...

Lawler, of course, seems quite likely to be IR’d, either short or long term.

JoJo Natson is just one fumble or misjudged punt return that hits the ground and bounces the wrong way from being released in favor of Webster.

Demby is probably not sleeping all that well at night after his preseason. Kromer could get interested in another versatile OL player real quick should one become available.

Evans would be well advised to start impressing Kromer, too. His 3rd round status will protect him for a while, but if an impressive player should become available to Kromer as an alternative? Then Evans could find himself going the JFM route.

Colts sign Hoyer and Brissett to Contracts

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001046041/article/roundup-hoyer-inks-3year-12m-deal-with-colts

The Indianapolis Colts have found their new backup quarterback.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Colts are signing former New England Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer to a three-year, $12 million contract. The pact includes $9 million guaranteed.
Hoyer now joins another Ex-Patriot, Jacoby Brissett in Indy. The veteran signal-caller is an ideal backup and mentor to the still-growing Brissett.

Hoyer, 33, has spent 11 seasons bouncing around the NFL, from New England to Pittsburgh to Arizona to Cleveland to Houston to Chicago to San Francisco and back to New England. The quarterback now joins his eighth NFL team. He's started 37 games throughout his career.
The $9 million guaranteed is a stellar payday for a backup who hopefully will provide more in the film room as a mentor than on the field as a player. Barring an injury to Brissett, Hoyer should reprise his role as a caddy, which he spent doing behind Tom Brady the last season and a half in New England.
After Andrew Luck's stunning retirement, the Colts will now press forward with Brissett as the starter and Hoyer as a veteran who can fill in during an emergency. There are worse QB situations in the NFL.
With backup Chad Kelly set to serve a two-game suspension to open the season, the Colts needed a veteran to fill the void. Given Hoyer's payday, we'd presume Kelly would come as the No. 3 option if he sticks around when his suspension is up.

_______________________________________________________________

$9 million guaranteed - looks like Hoyer is the big winner of Luck retiring.

Push Notifications

I enabled a new feature that allows push notifications to supported devices (read; pretty much everything non-Apple).

This could be a handy feature if you want to be notified of mentions or conversations to your mobile device.

The way it works, when you launch your supported browser, it will ask if you want notifications. Select “yes”.

You can then toggle it off or on, and choose what notifications you want from your preferences. See screen shot.

This was the #1 feature request from “forum users” but not sure if the interest is strong here or not. Figured it was worth turning on and seeing.

We can always turn it off.

Rams vs. Panthers: First Look

Rams vs. Panthers: 4 bold predictions for Week 1 matchup

Thursday, we can officially say the 2019 NFL regular season is underway. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears will kick off the season in a divisional matchup. Another prominent matchup in Week 1 comes between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams.

Last season, Ron Rivera and the Panthers were in a phenomenal position to make the playoffs after getting off to a 6-2 start through their first eight games. Unfortunately, Cam Newton suffered a shoulder injury and the team’s season was derailed.

Carolina won just one of their final eight games and Newton ended the season on injured reserve. This offseason, the Panther’s franchise quarterback underwent shoulder surgery and has returned to the field.

As for the Rams, Sean McVay’s squad are coming off a successful season despite suffering a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. After averaging 32.9 points per game in the regular season, Los Angeles could only manage to score three points against the Patriots.

Nonetheless, Los Angeles has reloaded and are inspired to make it to the Super Bowl again in 2019—but with a different result. The Panthers and Rams could both be teams competing for a chance to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl when it’s all said and done.

Without further ado, here are four bold predictions for the Rams and Panthers Week 1 matchup.

4. Dante Fowler Will Get Two Sacks

Prior to last year’s trade deadline, the Rams chose to make a move to acquire Dante Fowler from the Jacksonville Jaguars. During the regular season, Fowler played in eight games for Los Angeles but only managed to bring down the quarterback twice.

The 25-year old edge-rusher did make his presence known against the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints in the playoffs. The former Jaguars defensive end made a clutch play in the NFC Championship game to defeat the Saints; by delivering a hit on Drew Brees that forced an interception in overtime.

Again, during the regular season, Fowler struggled to adjust to Wade Phillips’ defense with just two sacks. This offseason, it seems as if Fowler has made strides in his game and the young pass-rusher will manage to tie his total in sacks from 2018 in Week 1 against the Panthers.

3. Christian McCaffrey Will Catch 15 Passes

As Newton continues to make his way back on the field for Carolina, he knows he can trust Christian McCaffrey to make plays for him in the passing game. Over the past two seasons, McCaffrey has become one of the NFL’s best dual-threat running backs.

Last year, the Panthers running back managed to accumulate 1,965 yards from scrimmage on 326 total touches. Most impressively, the Stanford product hauled in 107 receptions (which was eighth-most in the NFL) in 2018.

Additionally, McCaffrey had three games where he was unstoppable out of the backfield with 10 or more receptions. McCaffrey’s personal single-game record is 14 receptions against the Atlanta Falcons in 2018. The third-year running back will create a new career-high versus Los Angeles with 15 receptions in Week 1.

2. The Rams Will Have Three Receivers With 100 Yards

Before Cooper Kupp tore his ACL last season, the Rams were on pace to have their top three wideouts surpass 1,000 yards receiving on the season. If they had achieved that feat, they would’ve became just the sixth receiving trio in NFL history to do so.

Entering 2019, Kupp is fully recovered from his injury and joins Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods once again. Undoubtedly, Los Angeles arguably has the most talented receiving trio in the NFL.

Despite the lethargic performance in last year’s Super Bowl, the Rams offense should be even better than last year in 2019. To begin the season, Jared Goff will connect for 100 yards with his top three receiving options versus the Panthers.

1. The Rams Will Win, 38-17

Since McVay became the head coach of Los Angeles in 2017, the Rams have thrived in their regular-season openers. In 2017, Los Angeles took down the Indianapolis Colts sans Andrew Luck by the score of 46-9.

Then, last year, the Rams were able to secure a 33-13 victory in Week 1 over the Oakland Raiders. Now, this season, Los Angeles will begin their season against a Panthers team who is getting Newton back under center.

However, following their embarrassing Super Bowl loss in 2018, Los Angeles has been itching to get back on the field to impose their dominance. Similar to the past two seasons, Los Angeles will make a statement in Week 1.

Ranking NFL teams by age after 53-man cutdowns: 2019 edition
BY JIMMY KEMPSKI

The Dolphins could be the youngest team in the league for a few years.

Previously, the youngest teams in the NFL were as follows:

• 2018: Cincinnati Bengals

• 2017: Cleveland Browns

Every year from 2012-2016: St. Louis / Los Angeles Rams

The New England Patriots have the oldest roster this year.

Although even with continued roster movement, the average ages of each team shouldn’t change much. Here are the results, with a recent historic look at the average ages of each team on 53-man cut down day:

Patriots 27.0 (32) 26.8 (30) 26.5 (26) 26.1 (15) 25 (13)

Note: Every year I do this study, I seem to get the same basic comment, which I'll address ahead of time.

"The difference between the Dolphins and Patriots is only 1.8 years. So what?"

While 1.8 years may not be a monumental difference between two individual players, keep in mind that these are the average ages of 53 players per team.

1.8 years on average * 53 players = A difference of about 95.4 total years between the Dolphins and Patriots.

In other words, if you took the 19 oldest Patriots and shaved 5 years off each of their ages, their roster still wouldn't be as young as the Dolphins' roster.

To note, "old" doesn't mean "bad," especially for a team like the Patriots, who are Super Bowl contenders every year.

But certainly, you don't want to be old and bad, like some of the teams on the chart above.

And obviously, teams that are both young and talented can feel pretty good about their long-term chances of being consistent contenders.

Quotes & Notes 8/31: Continuity highlights first 53-man roster of 2019

Quotes & Notes 8/31: Continuity highlights first 53-man roster of 2019

After each media session, Quotes and Notes will bring you what was said, who said it, and what it means for your Los Angeles Rams. Here’s what you should know from Saturday, Aug. 31.

“We did a lot of moves last year and a lot of those players are still here.”
– GM Les Snead
  • A common thread throughout the Rams’ initial 53-man roster was continuity at several positions, including acquisitions who carried over from the 2018 roster.
  • The difference between last year’s roster and this year’s roster, according to Snead, is the young players who will step in and contribute alongside those experienced players, using DT Sebastian Joseph-Day – inactive for the entire 2018 season but now slated to be the team’s starting nose tackle – as an example.
  • Overall, Snead said he likes how this roster features a mix of veteran players in the prime with younger players who could contribute at any moment.

“He was a guy that came in, maximized his opportunities.”

– HC Sean McVay
  • LB Natrez Patrick was one of three undrafted free agents to make Los Angeles’ preliminary 53-man roster.
  • The former Georgia standout began the preseason at inside linebacker until an injury to DL Justin Lawler necessitated a switch to outside linebacker.
  • Though the Rams are deep at outside linebacker, McVay said special teams coordinator John Fassel has always valued Patrick and Patrick will be a “big-time contributor” for that unit.

“Definitely, we all see that right? You’re sitting in the press box and you’re going ‘Woah, wait, who is (jersey number) 14? Who’s this (WR) Nsimba (Webster) kid?”
– GM Les Snead
  • Another one of the three undrafted free agents to make the initial 53-man roster, WR Nsimba Webster took advantage of his opportunities in the preseason.
  • According to Snead, Webster impressed with both his return and coverage skills on special teams.
  • That versatility, along with maximizing limited reps, ultimately played a big role in Webster securing a spot on the roster despite the Rams’ depth at wide receiver.

“He maximized his chances and again, a lot of these decisions are more a result of other guys kind of earning it, not necessarily one guy not doing what he can to show that he’s an NFL-caliber player.”
– HC Sean McVay
  • Seventh-round pick LB Dakota Allen was one of the surprising cuts on Saturday, a decision McVay categorized as similar to others that are part of the “big picture perspective.”
  • An unspecified injury sidelined Allen for the Rams’ entire offseason program, but McVay praised his response with how well he performed in the preseason and what he was able to put on film.
  • McVay said tough choices like this ultimately come down to numbers – not just the 53-man roster, but the 46 players who will be active on gamedays too – and how players can contribute on special teams.

Rams 10th youngest roster

...actually looking at this tied for 7th, but assuming by decimal points they finish tenth.

Not bad. A good mix of youth and vets.

I Predict a Super Wet Charlotte Game

I've been studying Hurricane Dorian & it's future path & rainfall & North Carolina is a major Rainfall state before this ever growing storm ever exits the scene. I feel the game WILL be played and a tarp placed as over a foot of rain will drop around & over our first away game. Praying no flooding in our area occurs as storm will increase in size & drop on South Carolina first before it reaches it's largest size & drops at least a foot of rain on Charlotte .This storm will be around & still dropping precip leading up to & most likely also during our first real game. This whole event will be a record breaker & I feel sure the field will be covered up until gametime. & game will still be in major timeframe to be in major rainfall next Sunday. If you live in Charlotte please give us a heads up on field crew history. This event will still be very active after growing & lasting longer than many will have ever thought it would but this storm will stall many times before it's last drop falls. I forsee no winds to effect the game as they are trying to prognosticate all weather up the east coast this & next week. I'm sure McVay will know by then he will be most likely playing in rain by then & adjusting our gameplan. Lots of passes & runs to the young Stanford grad will probably make up our biggest issues in this game. Hope Rapp has a great day tackling the talented ex Cardinal as he might have even played him at Washington. U.

The Mcvay Offensive Genius Narrative

I in no way disagree with that sentiment.

I just think his genius is way more than that and people are missing it.

He's a coaching/teaching genius.

In this particular area I think we are in very good hands having Mcvay learn from Wade Phillips.

And ultimately I think this year the defense of the Rams is going to challenge that of the offense of the Rams.

Dare I say our defense has a better ranking than the offense at years end?

Rams cap as of today

This is what I was talking about in another thread. The reason the Rams are waiting on Fowler and Goff is because of not having the cap.

As of today, the Rams cap is about $1.6M which isn't really enough to make any moves. If they had extended Fowler or Goff this year they would have had to release any number of players. With guys like Talib, Brockers and possibly Peters that would clear enough cap space to allocate to Fowler and Goff. Next year they could have as much as $43M in cap space when contracts expire. Obviously, many of those will get extended, but I'm using it as a point of reference. That for purposes of cap management you need to plan and time your extensions of key players.

This is why I really think the Seahawks are being irresponsible in their cap management by pursuing Clowney who obviously is only interested in breaking the bank and doesn't care who gets cut to pay for him. It's why as much as I dislike the Cowboys, I'm completely on their side in regards to Zeke. There is a limit of what you can pay any single player before it begins to impact the team negatively.

Webster Over Hodges, Lawler Over DAllen

Many of us were surprised by these two decisions. But after reading some tweets by Vinny B and thinking it through and watching TC, pre season, they make sense, and here's the thinking. Webster is more of a slot guy than Hodges, and keeping him would not disrupt the other WR's should something happen to Kupp, he is coming off ACL knee surgery. He also can step in at KR-PR.

Lawler is currently hurt and its unkown to what extent. Should he go on IR and lost for the season, it would create a roster spot for Allen.
