QBs

Didn't want to make a new thread for Dominic Raiola but that kid looks good out there. He's going to be interesting to watch. Calm, eyes move and see the field quickly and efficiently, which for a true freshman...

Wasn't too impressed by Georgia's QB today, though those were two good defenses out there.

Todd Hewitt

Early in this century, I had about three telephone conversations with the now former RAMS Equipment manager, Todd Hewitt.
One resulted in him providing me with a personally customized RAMS helmet with the horns cut in two as you'd see the players wearing in games as opposed to what would be available for purchase at retail.
But, we also (for reasons that I don't recall now) talked about Lawrence McCutcheon's jersey number with me
informing him that 'Larry' wore #31 at the beginning of his RAMS career (I remembered seeing the roster in Street & Smith's 1972 Pro Football Annual). Todd told me that when he mentioned this to Clutch, whom was still employed by the team at that time, that his response was something like, "I wore 31?!?". I wondered if he ever actually wore #31 or if the #31 Street and Smith's indicated may have been premature or in error.
Well, lo and behold, as I was scrolling Google images this morning, looking for images of Dick Gordon in a RAMS uniform (#5),
1972 LA RAMS.jpg

I came across the attached image of a RAMS team picture from 1972. The rookie out of Colorado State (RAMS) is pictured to the extreme
lower right of the photograph.

Trivia question: Which two future RAMS Head Coaches are in the photo?

Rest in Peace, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.

Johnny Gaudreau, more popularly known as "Johnny Hockey " (with a much more successful career than Johnny Football, despite being small and slight), and his brother, Matthew (also a talented hockey player, though not famous like his brother) were out bicycling the night before their sister's wedding was about to take place.

A drunk driver killed both of them. Rear-ended them after he tried to move in front of two cars.

My utmost condolences to their family - especially their sister - friends, teammates, fans, everyone who ever had a positive interaction with them.

FYI: I'm retiring from "20 Random Thoughts"

As many of you know, I've been doing (here and elsewhere) a series called "20 Random Thoughts" for many years.

Right now, I have a lot going on in my life, upcoming travel, and my focus is on a lot of non-Rams related things. Rather than "phoning it in" just to keep it going, I'm going to take this time to retire the 20RT series.

If anyone wishes to continue it, please do. If nobody does, I'll still be posting other things, and perhaps I'll do a "special edition" of 20RT if the mood strikes. I just don't have the time and energy for a weekly installment.

Thanks for reading and commenting on 20RT all these years!

And, as always... GO RAMS!

Feel free to flame away.

How unexpected moves will be evaluated.

Trade (dump) a starting ILB.

Announce your RB1 is also going to return punts.

Make position changes on OL 10 days before regular season.

Fire an assistant coach as final cuts are being made.

How do we evaluate these moves?

Simple.

Rams start 4-0 (even 3-1): McVay’s a genius! Serve up the crow to the naysayers!

This is a results business. Period.

Every single one of you who is criticizing these surprising moves will laud them with unbounded vigor if the Rams beat the Lions by two TDs.

Anyone who denies that is more full of shit than the lone port-a-potty at a chili cook off during a dysentery outbreak.

The Absolute Best Time of the Year

It begins in September. The MLB season is in their stretch run. NFL football starts. Formula 1 racing's second half has begun. Come October it's the MLB postseason, the NFL football season is starting to take shape, the NHL kicks off early in the month and the NBA later in the month. November brings a MLB Champion, a huge feast for Thanksgiving and the NFL begins it's stretch run. I don't watch much hockey or basketball but I'm sure, for the fans who also enjoy those two sports, this part of the calendar has got to be heaven. Throw in the holidays and it's complete.

Had to read it twice but honestly, I can't say I'm really shocked. Always felt moving Avila from LG was a mistake, was so dominate there. Crazy that this move is happening so close to regular season. I suspect there's also some thought to Avila being able to help either guy on each side of him in this equation too.

I suspect when they tried Avila at LG and Limmer at C they went back to really really liking Avila at LG.

The Real Reason the Rams Traded Ernest Jones

This is the real reason the Rams traded Ernest Jones. Everything else is just smoke and mirrors. Don't listen to Whitworth (he basically just copied and pasted my post from here to Twitter anyways).

Inside the Rams' War Room:

Scene: A dimly lit conference room at the Rams' headquarters. Les Snead and Sean McVay sit at the head of the table. Around them, team executives and coaching staff murmur nervously, exchanging glances as they realize the old "Eff Them Picks" strategy might be losing its edge.

Les Snead: (rubbing his temples) "Alright, folks. We’ve traded away first-rounders like they were going out of style, and it got us a Super Bowl. But the league has caught on to our 'Eff Them Picks' strategy. We need something fresh, something bold... something they’ll never see coming. Any ideas?"

The room falls silent, everyone deep in thought. A few coughs are heard. Someone drops a pen. The tension is thick.

Sean McVay: (leaning forward, eyes narrowing) "Come on, people. We’re the Rams. We don’t just follow trends; we set them. What’s the next big move? How do we stay ahead of the curve?"

More silence. Some nervous shuffling. Then, from the back of the room, a low-level intern, barely out of college, hesitantly raises a hand.

Intern: (timidly) "Uh... what about... 'Eff Them Players'?"

All heads turn toward the intern. A few gasps. The room goes eerily quiet.

Les Snead: (arching an eyebrow) "Go on..."

Intern: (gaining confidence) "Well, if 'Eff Them Picks' got us a Lombardi Trophy, maybe the next step is... you know, trading away players before anyone expects it. Trade 'em while they're at the top of their game and still on cheap contracts. You have to admit, no one would see it coming. We trade our best guys for... well, whatever we can get, and throw everyone off balance. It’s like... extreme roster churn. Keep 'em guessing, right?"

The room erupts in murmurs. Some nod, others look horrified. McVay rubs his chin, deep in thought.

Sean McVay: (slowly) "You know... it’s so crazy... it just might work."

Les Snead: (a sly grin forming) "Imagine the headlines: 'Rams Trade Franchise Record-Holding ILB for a 5th Rounder.' The other 31 teams will never see it coming. They’ll be too busy trying to figure out what the hell we’re up to."

Les then turns to an assistant sitting nearby, still wearing a stunned expression.

Les Snead: "Get Tennessee on the line."

The intern smiles awkwardly as the room bursts into applause. Les Snead stands up, clapping the intern on the back.

Les Snead: "Congratulations, kid. You just earned yourself a promotion."

The scene ends with Snead and McVay exchanging a knowing look. The legend of 'Eff Them Players' is born.

Les Snead trades a discussion

So I asked the question in the EJ trade topic and really only got 1 person that I saw to respond sorry if I missed your response if so post here. Snead takes a lot of grief from fans for in their opinion his lack of a quality return for players we trade away. I think my biggest issue with this is I can't think of any players we traded away that legit were good after we traded them. He seems to have a pretty good record of trading away guys who turned out to be duds. Goff being the exception, even though he's one of the most disliked Rams in the last 20 years and there are people who still will not give him any credit. Add to that it's hard for me to accept anybody saying that trade didn't work out for us. And this is coming from me one of the most vocal after the trade that was against it.

So I'm looking for is give me a player that we traded away that went on to enjoy success for his new team. One thing to consider is the Rams and McVay are for some guys like Ramsey willing to take a little less to facilitate a move to a team the player wants. Not exactly cutthroat best business practice but it's one of the things that make him the players coach and winner IMO that he is. So hit me with your best ones.

The best that I can come up with myself is Robert Woods. Not Bobby Trees was coming off an ACL injury at 30 years old and had IIRC a $10 million cap hit that year. The part of me that doesn't want to consider him is he really since then hasn't done anything close to what he did for the Rams. 2022 for the Titans 53 receptions for 527 yards and 2 TD. And 2023 40 receptions for 426 yards and 1 TD. That was one season for the Rams and it took him 2 seasons to do it.

So who you got? And just telling me "We should have got more" isn't going to cut it! Don't care what you got in your Madden career mode or what you did in your mock off season. Who did we get rid of that actually did anything good. My contention in all this is we are selling players that Rams fans think more highly of than the NFL does since they don't amount to much at all after they leave LA. Prime example in my mind is Trumaine Johnson, and that may have been one of the best trade returns :D But Tru was garbage after leaving the Rams.

Coaching Staff: Preseason and Looking Ahead

One thing I've been kicking around of late is the performance of the different units in preseason vs the coaching changes that were made this offseason, and the general impact of the staff. Of course this stuff is impossible to truly get a handle on, but since when do we let that stop us. So let's get into this shit...

TOP PRESEASON PERFORMANCE

:helmet: Greg Williams - Inside Linebackers. I noted the name when he was hired, but didn't really expect all that much out of him in year one. His unit, after all, was full of limited options and UDFAs behind one good starter. Talent-wise I've always liked Hummel but he hasn't translated which is usually a bad sign with a position that tends to show quickly when a player has it. Nothing against Reeder, Rozeboom, and the rest, but I had no reason to expect good things from this group. Well... Turns out they outperformed their perceived talent range as a group. They gave the type of preseason performance I expected from the TE group. This bodes well for Williams in his future in LA, because if this defense performs well he will benefit from the upward coaching movement that is always present on this staff. And I am eagerly awaiting the installation of Speights into that starting Mike role, which should be official I'd think by week 3 when we play SF, who will require our best. But in summary if you had told me before the preseason we'd move Jones and still keep 5 ILBs I would have told you to put the crack pipe down.

:helmet: Chris Shula - Defensive Coordinator. It is premature to draw any big conclusions with the defense. I realize that. But Chris is here for one reason: the exemplary team tackling that was on display during the entirety of preseason. This defensive unit to a man was snuffing out ball carriers at first contact at the LOS and in space. It was an impressive display. They also did this without anything resembling a starter at any point in any game. There is no telling what we're about to get in production for the season, as the starters finally take the field, but for myself the arrow is indicating a significant upwards direction with what looks to be a very well schooled unit that is ready to snuff out all those irritating short passes that typically lead to long and exhausting drives by opposing offenses.

:helmet: Ryan Wendell - Offensive Line. It might not be a coincidence that Ryan is a dead ringer for Hagrid of Harry Potter fame, because this year's OL in preseason were playing like some magic was involved. First off I am not accustomed to seeing our depth units play that polished, with protections executed with all five in harmony on so many snaps. And secondly I am not accustomed to seeing our depth options firing off physically and taking the fight to the defense in preseason to make them respect the run game. It was excellent to watch. Looking ahead to the season I have many concerns with just LT, not to mention surviving the first game vs Detroit with two depth OT protecting our QB. We may need to endure a rocky start in game one in fact. But it feels to me like this unit is in great hands right now, in spite of my LT reservations, and I am looking forward to a fine season in part because of that.

HIGH SEASON EXPECTATIONS

:helmet: Giff Smith - Defensive Line / Run Defense. Giff is a hire I was rather underwhelmed by, particularly when he's following a DL coach who I think routinely got the very best from our DL unit. Looking up his history of assignments vs on field performance in conjunction with that was rather concerning to me. Well it's still early, but judging from the performance of the depth which was all he had to work with, I feel the need to give him some cred and observe that he is off to a very strong start. Our defense was physically stout all preseason, and played well across the board. And when I look at this group I have this crazy feeling they are going to cause problems for our opponents once those starters take the field. I expect Fiske to be a very strong starter as a rook. I expect Turner to pick up right where he left off. Hopefully they will get that third heat from Brown or Davis.

:helmet: Aubrey Pleasant - Pass Defense / Asst HC. Watching the secondary this preseason was a mixed bag. But one thing that stood out to me was the cohesiveness of the players in their coverage. Players in good positions vs the offensive play, the quick tackles, and an overall ability to keep opponents out of our endzone. Of all the position groups the secondary is the one that is most up in the air for me, even more than the DL, because of the Corner position. It is hard to project them due to health questions or concerns, and who plays where. But looking at preseason it feels like this group is well schooled in the scheme and ready to go, so I am expecting to see a very productive back end this season. The strength of the group I think will be at safety, which should positively affect how well Shula will be able to run pre and post snap fun and games with opposing QBs. Definitely expecting big returns here and hopefully the rush supports them, and if so Aubrey will be a head coaching interview candidate along with Shula in the offseason.

:helmet: Eric Yarber - Wide Receivers. Yarbs is always easy to overlook because we are so accustomed to this unit producing at the high end. But he has done a great job with that receivers room and we saw the impact of his coaching during preseason with the offense moving the chains with a healthy mix of bottom depth options. Looking ahead to the season I cannot wait to see a healthy Kupp pairing with Nacua. What that's going to look like should be a lot of fun to watch unfold. Is this the year Tutu finally works himself into a consistent usage, or will Robinson lock that third role down. To what extent do they rely on Whittington.

HOPING TO SEE MORE

:helmet: Chase Blackburn - Special Teams. It is clear that McVay loves Chase and how he goes about his business. For myself though I cannot recall the last time I felt like our special teams unit outsmarted an opponent or gave us a big time edge in the win/loss column. Feels like it's been a vast and dark gulf of special teams performances over the years since Fassell was booted. And while I don't think all of that has been solely due to ST coaches, they are the ones who are going to eat it when everything goes south. Now complicating this is the fact that the NFL has made a significant change in special teams returns. This change is going to have a major effect league-wide on the game, how it is played, and the standings. It's a big deal. And there were some teams who looked like they were ready in preseason to benefit from these changes. Rams were not one of them, but of course that doesn't mean it isn't coming in the regular season. So let's just say I want to see some potency by teams. I want to see them giving us an edge, rather than the other way around where it always seems like the opponent has the advantage in that oft ignored third phase.

Interview with two key analysts re: Rams’ Outlook

Welcome to Spiralhorn Sound-off, an interactive series regarding the state of the Rams. I’m your host, Armen Dacity, and today I have two expert panelists to discuss the upcoming 2024 season. First, from the Sunshine State of Florida, we have the esteemed Ronald Grump.

Grump: “Hello, Armen, and your esteem is welcomed and expected.”

And, also with us, from the Rams’ home state of California, we have Pamela Barris.

Barris: “Hi!” [laughs loudly]

Let’s start with an overview. What do you think of the Rams’ overall prospects for 2024. Mr. Grump?

Grump: “This Rams team is great…I’d say the greatest ever… and they’ve been great ever since I started supporting them, because my support… you can ask anyone…makes any team great.”

Ms. Barris?

Barris: “The Rams’ have blue and yellow uniforms. And who doesn’t love uniforms with yellow in them? You know?” [laughs loudly]

Is something funny?

Barris: “No… I…” [continues laughing]

Grump: “She is the worst laugher ever… it’s a shame… really….”

Okay, let’s get back on topic. What aspect of Sean McVay’s coaching philosophy do you believe keeps the Rams relevant from year to year? Ms. Barris?

Barris: “Well, the philosophy of coaching, which, as you know, involves being a coach, and doing what coaches do, from a philosophical standpoint, is always relevant to the philosophy that is employed by McVay when he’s coaching.”

Interesting. Mr. Grump?

Grump: “Well I once told Sean… Seany, as I call him… if you want to make a team great again, you have to weed out the old regime, which was really terrible, the worst ever, and do what I do, which, as any will tell you, is great… really the greatest philosophy for success in the world.”

Intriguing. So, what type of season can we expect this year? Mr. Grump?

Grump: “They just need to follow my lead, because wherever I go, people say that I’ve made things better for everyone, they just thank me and tell me that. Truly they do. And if they don’t listen to the fake sports news, they’ll win every game.”

Barris: “What’s important is that they win, but they win for everyone, because everyone deserves to win because that’s what winning is.” [laughs loudly]

Okay… well, thank you both. This has been Spiralhorn Sound-off. I'm Armen Dacity. Good-night.

Cap Update

OTC currently shows the Rams at 15.6M of cap room for 24', and 40M for 25'.

The caveat for next year is it only has 45 players under contract with all the cuts yesterday. So in 25' the effective cap space would currently be projected at approx 34M. (7 additonal 900k salaries added for end of year additions).

Now these numbers will likley be lowered after some in season additions, incentives paid out, etc... However, they will have around $40-44M to spend next year. And it could be more than that if say Havenstein or Kupp retire. Kupp save's $15M with a post June retirement (what they did with Donald) and Havenstein saves $8M

So to summarize, they can be very active next year and it's why I said they will not get any comp picks in 26'. They only had 3 guys worthy of comp pick contracts, Jones, Tutu, and BB. Maybe Garrapolo as well. The Rams would have brought in more players to offsett those 4 potential losses.
