As Rams struggle, coach Sean McVay’s reputation takes a hit

By GARY KLEIN
NOV. 16, 2019 12:14 PM
Not so long ago — circa 2018 — Sean McVay was the toast of the NFL, a coaching wunderkind and whiz kid play-caller on his way to leading his team to the Super Bowl.

A year later, Sean McVay is trying to keep the teetering Rams from falling out of playoff contention.

That could happen if they lose to the Chicago Bears on Sunday at the Coliseum.

It’s a far different scenario than last season, when the Rams won their first eight games en route to a second consecutive NFC West title.

They enter Sunday’s game with a 5-4 record and a distant view of the first-place San Francisco 49ers and surging Seattle Seahawks in the division.

“I would be lying to say that this hasn’t been more challenging,” McVay said. “But that’s also why there’s a motivation to make sure to do right and to use this as an opportunity to try to respond in the way that you challenge your players and everybody else too.

“You want to make sure that you’re epitomizing those things as well.”

McVay, 33, was regarded as one the NFL’s most dynamic and innovative play-callers during his first two seasons.

That reputation has taken a hit.

The once high-powered offense has been middling. The unit did not score a touchdown in last week’s 17-12 defeat by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quarterback Jared Goff committed three more turnovers. Star receiver Cooper Kupp did not catch a pass. Star running back Todd Gurley did not touch the ball in the fourth quarter.

So McVay, the celebrated genius, has not looked the part.

He anticipated that day might come.

“Sure,” he said. “It’s a humbling game.”

Rams players, however, said McVay has not changed his demeanor or approach. He has remained consistent while attempting to produce a consistently positive outcome.

“That dude is steady,” Goff said.

Said defensive lineman Aaron Donald: “Coach’s been coach. Same thing.”

More than a month has passed since McVay last paced the Coliseum sideline.

An Oct. 13 defeat by the San Francisco 49ers had extended the Rams’ losing streak to three games, putting their season on the brink of possible collapse. The Rams launched a mini-rally and beat the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals during an extended road trip. But after the defeat by the Steelers in Pittsburgh, they return in a similarly precarious position.

And with an injury-depleted offensive line that must protect Goff from one of the NFL’s most aggressive defenses.

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth, a 14-year pro, is the only Rams lineman with more than a few games of NFL experience at his position. Rookie tackle Bobby Evans could start for the first time and match-up against Khalil Mack, the Bears’ $141-million outside linebacker who was the 2016 NFL defensive player of the year.

“You just kind of get it out of your head who’s over there,” Evans said. “You have to execute. That comes with preparation and getting your mind right.”

The Rams also will be without receiver Brandin Cooks, who will sit out a second consecutive game while recovering from concussions. Cooks absence enabled the Steelers to double-team and shut down Kupp.

“We just need to step up and make plays,” Goff said, “and it starts with me.”

Though the game is at the Coliseum, and their beloved team is 4-5, Bears fans are expected to turn out in force.

“It really carries in every away game,” Bears coach Matt Nagy said of the support, adding, “Trust me, when you have that going on, on the road, you really respect that and appreciate every bit of it.”

The influx of Bears fans might not reach the level seen when the Green Bay Packers played at the Coliseum last season, but the Rams are preparing for a significant turnout.

“If they want to bring the noise, man, we’ll handle it,” Rams linebacker Samson Ebukam said. “As long as it’s an electric atmosphere, I don’t really care.”

The Rams have gone to a non-verbal snap count at the Coliseum when opposing fans become too loud. That might happen again Sunday.

“We’re not going to be surprised,” McVay said, “but we’re hopeful that our fans show up, and excited about being back at home.”

Week 11 2019 - Game Day Menu

Didn't see a thread started yet!

My famous steak chilli today. It's been in the oven for about 90 mins already and I ain't looking at it again for another 4 at least. I am not a huge fan of minced beef so I use braising steak instead, slow cooked for hours and so amazingly tender. I dont have too many fancy special ingredients but I do love to put in plenty of fresh coriander, lime and a big chunk of diced chorizo.

Homemade salsa and guacamole on the side.

It's definitely feeling wintry here now so I'm making some 'festive' whisky sours this afternoon too. Bourbon, lemon juice, cranberry juice and sugar over loads of ice.

SNF: Bears at Rams

Game Day Thread

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember our core principles; we always show respect for our team and each other.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is the core rule of the GDT. Moderators are tasked to issue thread bans, at a minimum, to maintain this standard.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad. We are here for FUN, not to be dragged down.

A more loosely moderated atmosphere can be found in the chat room.

Go Rams!

GAME DAY ROOM

Does anyone on this forum think the Rams will score more than 20

This will probably be considered a negative thread but if the Rams or Bears score more than 20 points without the help of the Defense or Special teams I will be stunned.

Both of these teams are a long shot to score more than 20 points against the better defenses in the NFL.

I can't vision the Rams offense scoring more than 20 points against the Bears.

If the defense or special teams score some points that would be awesome but I'm talking about the Offensive points Only.

Will the Rams offense score more than 20 points against the Bears?

I don't believe they will.

I vision this game being a lot like the Steelers game with both offenses held to 20 points or less.

Prove me wrong McVay!!!!!!

Brandin Cooks is selling his L.A. home for $5.8M: Nothing or something?

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Brandin Cooks is listing his recently purchased Hidden Hills house on the market, according to an article from the Los Angeles Times.
Cooks’ 2.3-acre estate rests at the top of a cul-de-sac. He bought the modern style home a few months after being traded from the Patriots to the Rams, but the official listing on RedFin shows he is selling the home for $5.8 million.

PHOTOS: Brandin Cooks lists home for $5.8 million
But as the sixth-year wideout begins listening to offers for his house, it isn’t far-fetched to assume that the Rams are preparing to listen to offers for Brandin Cooks himself.
According to Spotrac, the Rams will enter the 2020 season with 41 players under contract and roughly $26 million in cap space. Cooks’ salary alone amounts to 8.1 percent of the team’s salary cap, with $21.8 million in dead cap.
Looking ahead to next season, Cooks could be a cap casualty for a team that is in win-now mode with very little draft capital and is heavily-invested in franchise quarterback Jared Goff, who has struggled behind a porous offensive line decimated by injuries.
Les Snead has become increasingly aggressive during his tenure as general manager of the Rams since the team moved to Los Angeles. With Cooks, the Rams have a dependable deep threat who has finished above 1,000 yards receiving with 16 starts in four of his six seasons in the league, with the only other two seasons being this year and a rookie season cut short by a fractured thumb.
But an unfortunate slew of recent head injuries has kept Cooks from maximizing his full potential and could also diminish his trade value. The former Oregon State All-American suffered his fourth concussion in less than two years in the Rams’ 24-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in London and is officially listed as out for the team’s Sunday night tilt against the Bears.
And as Cooks’ contract stipulates, he has $50 million guaranteed for injury. It also wouldn’t be far-fetched to think that he could walk away from the game with well-deserved wealth for the sake of his own health.
This is not to speculate that Cooks has considered retirement, but there’s a growing trend across the NFL where star players retire during the prime of their careers. Andrew Luck is the most recent example, following the footsteps of perennial All-Pro players like Patrick Willis, Calvin Johnson, and Rob Gronkowski.
But the trade deadline has since passed, and Cooks is seeking to get back on the field as soon as possible. Rams head coach Sean McVay is optimistic that his deep threat wideout will return for the team’s Monday night date with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in Week 12.
“He’s out there. He’s got great energy like he always does. He’s moving around,” McVay said. “I think it’s one of those things sitting down with Brandin, really getting a chance to talk to our doctors and then making that decision that we feel like is right. I think he’s feeling good and I think he’s excited about the opportunity to come back and play.”
Cooks’ decision to sell his Los Angeles home doesn’t necessarily mean his days as a Ram are numbered. One only needs to look at NBA superstar Kawhi Leonard, who in June reportedly bought property in Toronto ahead of his decision to spurn the Toronto Raptors for the Los Angeles Clippers in early July.
But all things considered, Cooks’ status with the team is certainly something worth monitoring as the Rams continue to play the game of salary cap gymnastics that they started, which won’t end anytime soon.

River Mock 2.0 ...

BIG CHANGES. One costly free agent signing along with several vets moving on. Two minor trades for additional draft picks and also to increase overall available CAP.
As you can see, the Rams will be getting much younger, but I believe this remains a deep play-off caliber roster when healthy. jmo.

Jared Goff it is time take the Offense on your back!

We all know the issues with the Line, but you are being paid elite money start acting like it.

Figure out solutions to mitigate the oline.

Make those pinpoint throws while the pocket collapses around you.

Stop holding the ball as long.

You MUST step up period! Like I say in a ton of threads every single team in the NFL has issues and injuries, the difference with the Rams we have a ton of great players compared to most teams. We must figure out how to hide our deficiencies or mitigate them. The Bears have their two top TEs possibly their star RB out on offense and 2 of the 3 best players out on Defense Traethon and Hicks which means their Run D is going to suffer see everyone has issues.

Time to show your mental toughness

The Rams are 7-2

Okay...

LOL

We are not. I know that. :giggle:... But this quote made me think how close we are, though...

The sad thing is.. we still should have won, because Goff's fumble was not a fumble.

And...

Zuerlein hits that 44 yarder... like he does almost every time... we beat Seattle 32-30 week 5 and... Boom... 5-4 becomes 7-2.

I am not downplaying our issues. Our OL is struggling and we need the offense to adjust to that... We have work/things to get right.

But, we are still a team NOBODY wants to play. I am proud of that. This is what I’ve wanted all along... then let‘s play.

5-4 is an uphill battle. But there are 7 games to get hot... 7 games of surprise losses to teams in front of us because it happens every week.... 7 games of injuries to shape teams in front of playoffs... 7 games for the NFL to live up to its “Not For Long” moniker....

I‘m excited for Sunday!! It’s a journey!

Go Rams!

Rams-Bears will feature two of the league's top pass rushers in Donald and Mack

Rams-Bears will feature two of the league's top pass rushers in Donald and Mack

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Rams QB Jared Goff practices against the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and is set to face a former one for a second time, so his perspective on each is one few other quarterbacks around the league can claim.

Yes, DT Aaron Donald and OLB Khalil Mack play two different positions, but there's still one constant that remains, according to Goff.

"You just feel them, both of them," Goff said. "Aaron in practice, you know where he is – pre-snap, during the play, after the play – same thing with Khalil you have to be aware of him. Then, during the play, you’re always feeling his presence whether it’s during, after or before."

Donald and Mack meet again for the second time in less than a year when the Rams take on the Bears Sunday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, putting two of the league's premiere pass-rushing talents on display.

Together, the duo have accounted for each of the last three NFL Defensive Player of the Year Awards – Donald going back-to-back over the last two seasons, with Mack winning it for the 2016 season.

When Los Angeles and Chicago met at Soldier Field last December, Mack posted three total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and two QB hits in a 15-6 Bears win. Donald registered two tackles and one QB hit in defeat.

"He's just a playmaker," Donald said. "He dominate. If you don't got a gameplan for him, he can take over a game. He been like that for the last couple years. We've got to try to find a way to slow him down, different type of ways, different gameplans, because if you don't, it will be a long day."

The respect is mutual.

"Everything, man, everything," said Mack, when asked what he appreciates about Donald as a pass-rusher. "Speed, power, everything that guy does, he does it at a high level, and it's impressive to watch."

Donald's 20.5 sacks during his repeat Defensive Player of the Year campaign set a new single-season record for an interior lineman and a new single-season franchise record.

When Mack took home the award three years ago, he posted 10 sacks, 13 QB hits, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a pick-six over the final eight games after have just one through his first five. According to NFL research, his 26 QB hits on the season were second only to Donald's 31.

Does Mack keep track of Donald's stats every week?

"It's hard to care about the other people when you care about yourself, you know what I'm saying?" Mack said, smiling. "I'm worried about my box score and what I'm doing."

Besides being a constant pre-snap check for quarterbacks, both players are also versatile for their positions. For Donald, that's lining up in various spots along the defensive line. For Mack, it's being used in coverage and the ability to rush from either edge.

"He’s a phenomenal player, you definitely have to account for him and know where he is on every single snap," Rams head coach Sean McVay said of Mack.

"We'll account for him in protection and give him the respect he deserves as a great player in this league," Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky said of Donald.

Rams and Bears set for Sunday Night Football showdown

Game Preview: Rams and Bears set for Sunday Night Football showdown

The Rams (5-4) and the Bears (4-5) will square off at 5:20 pacific time on Sunday Night Football, facing each other for the second time in less than a year.

The two teams last met last season in Chicago, a 15-6 Bears win in early December. At the time, it was only the second time ever in the Sean McVay era that Los Angeles failed to reach double figures on the scoreboard.

To get you ready for the contest, theRams.com compiled a quick preview featuring who to watch, what to watch for on offense and defense for both the Rams and the Bears and three keys to victory for L.A.

Five players to watch
  • Rams NT Sebastian Joseph-Day: He'll have some extra motivation this weekend playing in front of his parents for the first time in his NFL career.
  • Rams T Bobby Evans: He's expected to be active for the third time this season and will face a stiff test against a formidable Bears defensive line.
  • Bears OLB Khalil Mack: Last year, he had a strip sack and a pick-six – all in the first half – in his Chicago debut, and he's still capable of making those types of game-changing plays.
  • Bears WR Allen Robinson: He'll likely draw former Jaguars teammate Jalen Ramsey as his defensive assignment, and at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, he's a big target for QB Mitch Trubisky.
  • Rams K Greg Zuerlein: The last time these two teams played, Zuerlein accounted for all six of L.A.'s points.

What to watch for…

On offense for the Rams

The approach with the makeshift offensive line and how it impacts the rest of the unit.

Veteran LT Andrew Whitworth, a 14-year pro, and fourth-year OL Austin Blythe will be dealing with some inexperience with RT Rob Havenstein out for the game and C Brian Allen out for the rest of the season.

From a scheme and personnel standpoint, it will be interesting to see what adjustments that leads to in trying to limit Mack's impact.

On offense for the Bears

Primarily the tight end situation and how that impacts what they can do scheme- and personnel-wise. Ben Braunecker has 45 career games under his belt and has played all four seasons in Chicago, though, so it's not as if they're throwing a completely inexperienced player out there to step in for Burton and Shaheen.
The availability of leading rusher David Montgomery, who has been hobbled by an ankle injury this week, will also be worth monitoring.

If Montgomery does play, what impact he can still have on the game. If he doesn't play much, whether that results in more of backup Tarik Cohen, who is also a receiving threat out of the backfield, in action.

On defense for the Rams

While the primary wide receiver/cornerback matchup focused on Robinson and Ramsey, Los Angeles will also have to make sure it accounts for WR Taylor Gabriel.

Gabriel's four longest receptions on the season have gone for 22, 24, 36 and 53 yards. He's a big play threat out of the slot, which means CB Nickell Robey-Coleman figures to have an important role for L.A.'s defense on Sunday.

On defense for the Bears

Fourth-year LB Nick Kwiatkoski stepped in for the injured Danny Trevathan and managed to play a crucial role in Chicago's 20-13 win at Detroit, collecting an interception that helped give it a 14-point cushion which would be enough to hold on for the victory. He'll likely fill in for Trevathan again this week and will be an important player to watch on the Bears' defense.

Three keys to victory
  1. Contain Mack: Easier said than done, but you don't have to look any further than how he fared statistically in his Bears debut – and his overall resume – for what can happen if the gameplan to limit him doesn't get executed.
  2. Create takeaways: The Bears have committed the fifth-fewest turnovers NFL, so it will be up to the Rams defense to create them in a game that may see few scoring opportunities for both sides.
  3. Create explosive plays in the run game: Chicago allows the ninth-fewest rushing yards per game. Those types of plays won't come off in that phase of the offense, but last week's game at Pittsburgh showed the importance of being able to take advantage when those openings do occur.

Predict The Score Bears @ Rams

Have tp pat myself on the back for the 2nd week in a row for winning last weeks PTS contest

Now on to this weeks contest

Can the mighty Los Angeles Rams mend their offensive woes and score some td's against the Bears defense? Can the Rams defense keep playing at a high level? Does anyone actually read this stuff I type here or do you just glance at the title and then post your score?

Stomach bug is latest ailment impacting depleted Rams offense

rams_ir_w11.png

As if injuries weren’t bad enough, now a stomach bug is taking a toll on the Los Angeles Rams offense. Cooper Kupp and Austin Blythe were both absent from practice on Friday due to an illness, raising some concern about their availability for Sunday night.
Sean McVay doesn’t seem too worried about it, though, saying he expects both of them to play against the Bears this weekend.

“With Austin and Cooper, they just both got the little stomach bug,” McVay said Friday. “It is contagious, so kept those guys at home. But we’re hopeful that it’ll just be a 24-hour thing and we’ll get them up to speed tomorrow.”

It may not seem like a big deal, but two starters missing practice on Friday is certainly not ideal for a team that’s already struggling on offense – especially on the offensive line. With Brian Allen out for the year and Rob Havenstein sidelined, the Rams have had to mix up their offensive line.
Blythe will be the starting center, but since he missed practice, the Rams had to change things up on the fly.

“Even today with Austin being out, you shuffle some guys around,” McVay said. “So I think those are things that are kind of settling in. Like I said, we’re hopeful that Austin’s going to be able to go and that it is just a 24-hour bug, but there are things that have come up before that you can never truly anticipate and that’s why you have to have all parties on deck ready to go.”

As for the rest of the team, Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett are both “making good progress” and were just banged up coming out of Sunday’s loss. McVay said the team is optimistic that they’ll be able to play against the Bears if they continue to progress the way they have.
On the Bears’ side, David Montgomery will be a game-time decision, while tight ends Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen have been ruled out.

What About the 2020 and Beyond Rams Defense?

I know the priority for the future is to fix the offensive line. However, how much can the Rams sacrifice on the defense to rebuild the offensive line? Going into next year, the Rams will likely let Brockers move on to free agency. The Rams will try to extend Ramsey and have to at some point to make the trading of two first round picks and a fourth round pick payoff. The big questions concern the future of two important defensive players Fowler and Littleton. Do the Rams sign neither or one or both? Fowler's market value is estimated at 10.5 Million while Ramsey is at 16.9 Million. Ramsey already counts 13 Million against the cap but, could count a little less if a deal is made. The Rams only have 26 Million remaining in cap space with 51 roster spots accounted for. I'm not exactly sure how much has to go to draft picks.

1573846625492.png

I read many different views or possible ways to save money that could include cuts and trades. No way can the Rams do anything about Cook's and Gurley's contracts next year. Could be at least two years before they get relief from them.

Here are some things that were mentioned, John Johnson trade, NRC cut and not resigning Littleton and /or Fowler. If the Rams keep JJ they probably would want to extend him before he becomes a free agent. By extending Littleton only for one year this past offseason the Rams risk paying a much higher price tag or not resigning him at all. Littleton's pay would be a guesstimate of around 10 Million per year. As you can see Cooper Kupp will be due to get a very big contract as soon this off season or he becomes a free agent in 2021 as well.

So what do think? If players go who replaces them on defense? Any other moves you see could happen?

Cleveland Browns' Garrett suspended indefinitely

Anyone who thinks Myles Garrett should be suspended indefinitely or charged with assault is SO SOFT!

That fight was not bad! A bunch of swinging and pushing but nothing connected outside of the helmet tap, and I bet anything he wasnt even bruised from that hit.

A fine and a game or so suspension I get, but pressing charges and kicking him out the league is way too far.

Eric Weddle nominated by Rams for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Eric Weddle is one of the most well-respected players in the NFL and it was evident right away after he signed with the Rams. He was quickly voted a captain and called a “genius” by his teammates, emerging as a leader right out of the gates.
On Thursday, he was honored by the Rams as their nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. The award recognizes players who best exemplify sportsmanship on the field, which Weddle certainly does.

Last year, the Rams nominated Todd Gurley, though Drew Brees went on to win the award.
The winner will be announced before the Super Bowl at the NFL Honors show and will be determined by a vote from current players. Eight finalists will be selected in December.
