Week 4 NFC West Match-ups

Here are the NFCW matchups for week 4.

NFC West Standings
Seahawks 3-0 at Detroit 2-1
Cardinals 1-2 home against Commodes 2-1
Rams 1-2 at Bears 1-2
49’ers 1-2 home against Patriots 1-2

Seattle has had an easy schedule so far; home Broncos, road Patriots, home Tua-less Dolphins. Hard to root for Detroit pulling to 3-1 but a Seattle loss is best for us right now.

Cardinals are on the final of a 3 game home stretch. Jayden Daniels and the Commodes should give them a game.

49’ers get that much needed get-well game with the Patriots coming to their house. But the next 3 gets interesting for them; Cardinals, Seahawks, Chiefs.

Gameday Menu Thread!

Man I feel like I've been lacking on matching the menu to the team so far this year.

We've certainly gone out of our way in the past to make Chicago style dogs - they were good but not worth the effort to find all the ingredients.

I think we have decided on taco soup or sloppy joes for Sunday. Get either going tomorrow so we can snack but feast on Sunday.

We've been invited to a murder mystery party tomorrow (Saturday night). I'm making spicey pretzels for this.

I've already expressed that I don't want to be out too late with an early game for Rams.

So what inspires you all this weekend?

Dinner with a SF fan friend…..

So I went to dinner with a SF fan friend and he said something about the Rams beating SF, and I said yep, here we are or something like that. Then he said “you know the 9ers were injured….” I then just looked at him for a moment, and then said “but not as injured as the Rams were.”

Then he looked back at me…..and…..crickets………it was freaking priceless. You had to be there. Haha…

Scouting notes, 1st half Niners game

A few observations on re-watch:

Big props to #83 Nikola Kalinic for what was arguably the biggest play of the half. Kalinic on the edge with a terrific block on the fake punt that just barely gives Rivers enough room for the conversion. GREAT call by McVay and Blackburn there, down 14-0 and with zero momentum.

I'm sticking up for Tre White, he looks solid in his play and has just barely gotten beat a few times. And really stuck his nose in on the run game, had 2 ferocious stops.

Niners second TD drive: I thought it was 3 bullshit calls on the Rams but it was "only" two. First one: An extremely ticky-tack holding call on White, he just barely grabbed him, even on slo-mo. Second one: an appropriate call, Carnell Lake mugged his guy away from the play. (There wasn't any call on Cobie Durant for nudging his man toward the boundary line.) Third one: another very ticky-tack call on Curl... the 49er receiver just barreled into him, and he extended his arms out to protect himself for a sec. Again, one of those "letter of the law" calls that could easily have been a no-call and probably should have been.

Rams get pushed around and are down 14-0 middle of 2nd quarter... and then back up to face 3rd and 29 on the ensuing drive.... D looks like shit, O looks like shit.... pass yards are 96 to negative 9.... just no way the Rams can win this game.... RIGHT?!?!?

Rams DT's getting gashed for runs up the middle. To my eye, Turner and Fiske look a lot better vs. pass than run. Tyler Davis with a real nice fill on a first and goal, stuffing the run for a 3 yard loss.

Neville Gallimore continues to be unimpressive. His name is better suited for a British tax accountant.

Niners #29 with a blatant late hit on KW. #29 took two long steps AFTER Williams was down, then smashes into him on the ground. Bullshit non-call.

Not sure why Alaric had such a low rating from PFF, he looked good to me out there. I'm grading him on a curve though because he went against Bosa and held his own. They gave him some help though-- finally-- maybe the Rams coaches finally see they gotta help out their LT when he's matched up vs an elite DE.

Dos Dos!! Two-touch Tutu!!

Amin and Sanchez are underrated. They both consistently made good observations, especially in the blocking game.

It's now a trend with Verse: ferocious disruptor who has trouble wrapping up at the very end. Don't get me wrong-- he's playing phenomenal, especially for a rookie. Great intensity, speed, power, and burst. But I lost track of the number of whiffs, at least 3 or 4 just in the first half alone. But it's worth it for sure, he blows up plays even if he doesn't quite get the final tackle.

BY was a monster. TFL's, forced fumble, great overall play.

More snaps for Whittington please. His YAC ability is scary. Looks like he belongs.

In 3 games I have yet to see Curl make a big play. Always a step late.

Reeder with a couple nice stuffs, and also a couple over-runs.

Kyren's TD catch and flip: DEFINITELY a candidate for play of the year. WOW!!!

Overall impression of first half: Unbelievable that the Rams stayed in this one. After a quarter and half the Niners were dominating on both sides of the ball. But then the fake punt (WOW!) and Kyren's Superman flip (WOW!) kept them in it.

Other observations or comments welcome.....

So sitting here in a hot ass house with no electricity and started thinking about our next block of games.

Our next game this Sunday gives us a very winnable game AT Chicago in good weather. If we can edge one out there we are .500 to close out our first 1/4 of games and onto a block of 3 home games and a much need bye week!

I think the Packer game Love is projected to be back. So that might be a tough ass game.

I’ll be at the Raider game which I think should be a win that probably puts us at 3-3. The Viking game looks to be a tough one. I expect to edge out either the Packers or Vikings which would give us a 4-3 record halfway through the season (week wise).

When is Kupp/Puka/Avila/Jackson/Willams supposed to be back? About The Packers game right?

What you guys think? Are these games winnable?

PREGAME Rams at Bears | Sept-29-2024 | 1:00pm E.T.

After a brief return home, the Rams are back on the road in Week 4 with a visit to Soldier Field to take on the Bears in Chicago. Kickoff on Sunday is scheduled for 10 a.m. pacific time on FOX.

In advance of the contest, here is your First Look at Rams-Bears:

Notable Bears additions

Selected former USC QB Caleb Williams No. 1 overall in this year's draft: Williams was brought in after Chicago traded its former starter, Justin Fields, to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Williams has completed 70 of 118 pass attempts (59.3%) for 630 yards with 2 touchdowns against 4 interceptions through his first three games.

Signed DB Kevin Byard to a 2-year deal in March: A safety with All-Pro and Pro Bowl pedigree, the 31-year-old Byard joined the Bears after playing six games with the Titans and 10 games with the Eagles last season (Tennessee traded Byard to Philadelphia in-season last year).

Top performers in Week 3

Williams completed 33 of 52 pass attempts for 363 yards with 2 touchdowns against 2 interceptions in the Bears' 21-16 loss to the Colts in Indianapolis.

RB Roschon Johnson led Chicago's backfield with 30 rushing yards on 8 carries.

WR Rome Odunze (6 catches, 112 yards, 1 touchdown) and TE Cole Kmet (10 catches, 97 yards, 1 touchdown) paced the Bears' receivers.

LB Tremaine Edmunds led Chicago's defense with 5 total tackles and 1 interception.

On special teams, K Cairos Santos made 1 of 2 field goal attempts (miss was from 56, make from 53) and his lone extra point attempt, while P Tory Taylor averaged 42.3 yards per punt across three punts.

Early storylines to watch, and what they mean for the Rams

While a complementary performance across all three phases is always critical to a win, this week will be no different for the Rams against the Bears.

Chicago has had its ups and downs offensively and on special teams, but it still owns the No. 8 total defense in the NFL (286.7 yards per game allowed).

Pass protection and playing an overall clean game offensively will be crucial, but the margins that could define this game will likely be found in the plays made on special teams and defense for Los Angeles.

Rams head coach Sean McVay on Monday said special teams has become an edge for the team this season. Just like last week against the 49ers, this would be another opportune time to show it again and help get L.A. to 2-2.

12 Personnel

I'm sure some of the X's and O's guys here on the forums have put some thought into this already.

For years we've been asking to see more 12 personnel on the field. Until yesterday the Rams played 100% from 11 personnel to start the season. Does that now change now that we've seen good success in the passing and run game coming from that grouping?

Even given the injuries when players do eventually come back do we split 11 and 12 personnel maybe 40 to 50%? The NFL is all about mismatches and teams have scouted the rams to beat their 11 personnel not their 12.

This is what it could look like once we have a healthy roster

11 Personnel
Kupp
Puka
Whittington/Robinson/Tutu
Higs/Parkinson
Williams

12 Personnel
Kupp
Puka/Robinson/Whittington/Tutu
Higs
Parkinson
Williams

Scheming correctly could put the Rams offense over the top and make them nearly impossible to stop barring injuries...

Xavier Smith.. a faster Brandon Powell?

Brandon Powell actually had a track record before the Rams got him, so it's not a perfect comp.

But Xavier Smith could be a faster version of him, when all is said and done. The kid makes plays and having that kind of thing on your roster is important, imo.
I completely get the Tyler Johnson support.. but I'd pick Smith IF it came down to those two. The Rams should work him in for a few snaps here and there.

Having a weapon like that on special teams and offense is a lot of fun.. but is also something that helps you win games. Like today.

Powell was (is?) a competitor.. and I think Smith is as well.. and he runs a sub 4.4. Get him the ball.
