About our new DC Brandon Staley...

I can’t prove it, but I think Staley’s fingerprints are all over these FA moves on D (and non-moves).

Littleton, Fowler, Matthews, and Brockers all leaving were not just strictly fiscal or cap related decisions. If Staley REALLY wanted one or more to remain I do believe that the Rams would have moved mountains to keep at least 1 or 2 of them.

Nope, I suspect that Staley preferred other player types that better fit the Ram cap AND his schemes. Floyd and Robinson will significantly improve our run D, for example.

Obviously, more of Staley’s ‘types’ will come from the draft and 2nd and 3rd tier FA’s, too. We’re a long way from having Staley’s ‘finished’ D today, but I’ll say this.

If Staley is that Fangio trained savant that McVay was so pleased to hire, I suspect that we’re gonna be treated to a ‘different’ kind of D this year. A more effective get-off-the-field one, at that.

My point? We need to be patient while the pieces are being reassembled on this D and they’re just getting started. Come September, I think it’s gonna be worth the wait.

Recency Bias and the Rams Oline

By the end of last year, our Oline was playing better than when the rookies and/or young back ups were thrown to the wolves as injuries mounted.
We know that Whit and Austin Blythe will man the Center and LT positions. It's the rest of the positions that seem to be in question
1. Havenstein: Dude is a tackle and nothing else, which is fine if he plays a strong RT. Last season he was anything but strong before getting knocked out with an injury. However, it's reported that he had been playing injured and might be ready for a 2018 resurgence.
2. Noteboom: It seems like a distant memory when we all believed that Boom would replace Whit at LT. He doesn't have a great injury history with the Rams, but he still has the talent that the Rams talent evaluators saw as LT worthy.
3. Edwards: Good and the bad, as he was inconsistent. Still, he looked good at times when he should have gotten killed by an excellent Dline.
4. Corbett: He seems to be only a back-up to me.

The recency bias comment is more having to do with Noteboom, because ever since he got hurt, people have dismissed him and never mention him in that way anymore. Not me.

Rams Salary Cap??? In need of a real capologist!

After all this blood shed today can someone explain where the rams stand cap wise this year? How much real money/cap space do they have RT now if any. How much cap space will we have next year.

Most importantly can we sign Ramsey now extend him if he is willing? I'd hate for him to get to free agency would make all of this so much more disturbing and painful than it already is.

Ok, It's Gotta Be Said. Do You Know Ram Rules?

In case you season ticket holders in the new SoFi stadium need help, watch this video closely...

So any of you wear the iconic melon heads? Any of you wear face paint and wear fake horns? If so, do you get your "look" assembled at the stadium, or do you walk out the hotel lobby door in full paint and regalia?

Are We at the Point Now Where

Are we at the point now where NFL teams should avoid giving multi-year contracts to Non-Elite QBs? When certain sportswriters were writing columns about how the Rams should draft Goffs replacement before his extension came due people were laughing. However, these mega QB deals truly do decimate depth and talent on the rest of the team. The Rams were the most if not one of the most talented teams from top to bottom while he was on his Rookie deal. Now after losing lots of depth and talent especially on defense and OLine should we in hindsight have thought about trading Goff and drafting his replacement last year? Daniel Jones and Drew Lock may have been there. I know Goff is better than both of those guys but with Mcgenius calling the plays I think they would have been good in this system. Very controversial subject I know. Love Goff but hate losing studs in other areas. (And I know Goffs deal wasnt the only huge one-Cooks, Gurley, Donald)

Cam Newton trade rumors: Three most logical landing spots for longtime Panthers quarterback

Cam Newton trade rumors: Three most logical landing spots for longtime Panthers quarterback

As the Carolina Panthers hit reset on their roster in advance of the 2020 season, they've allowed longtime quarterback Cam Newton to seek a trade elsewhere, all but promising an end to the former No. 1 overall pick's nine-year career in Charlotte.

With just a few QB spots up in the air around the league, where exactly could Newton end up?

Here are three of the most logical landing spots (Tom Brady is expected to sign in Tampa Bay) for the former NFL MVP:

3. Los Angeles Chargers

Newton isn't necessarily the ideal QB for Anthony Lynn, whose adoration for Tyrod Taylor and reported interest in Brady suggests he'd rather have someone who can manage an offense and take care of the football rather than rocket-arm the ball all over the field. But let's not pretend he wouldn't be intrigued by Newton's dual-threat abilities. Adding No. 1 to an L.A. offense already stocked with good weapons (Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, Hunter Henry) would instantly boost the Chargers' playoff chances.

2. New England Patriots

Stylistically, Brady and Newton could not be more different. But that's kind of what makes this appealing, no? If Bill Belichick is going to go into the season without No. 12 under center for the first time in two decades, who's to say he wouldn't embrace a more contemporary option -- as in someone still capable of damaging opponents with both their arm and legs? Newton's health is obviously a concern, but he'd open up all kinds of possibilities for a spread-out offense. He'd benefit from New England's ever-rotating stable of running backs. And he wouldn't preclude the Pats from still drafting a longer-term successor.

1. Washington Redskins

Didn't this team just draft Dwayne Haskins 15th overall in 2019? Yes, it did. But this is also the Washington Redskins we're talking about. Since when have monumental decisions stopped them from reversing course before? There are conflicting reports about how Washington really feels about Haskins, who struggled as a rookie, but even more importantly, new coach Ron Rivera had an incredible nearly decade-long relationship with Newton in Carolina. Washington's current offensive coordinator, Scott Turner, was also Newton's QBs coach with the Panthers. And the Redskins have money to spend, not to mention a historical affinity for veteran passers.

Moving on from Todd Gurley and Brandon Cooks, My 3 Draft gems

Moving on from a any players that have contributed to our success in the past is very hard. I for one am a Running back guy, love a premiere work horse RB and watching him take the majority of the load. So to even suggest getting rid of TG is very hard for me to do, but it's a necessary evil that I think must take place. Obviously there is a ton of smoke out there and there has to be some fires creating them.

I don't dislike Cooks but I'm a firm believer if you can't stay on the field your not any use to your club. Regardless of what sport this is in regards to. The contract and injury history needs to go, even if we have to eat some of that money (like the Foles trade) we need him out of here.

If McSnead can get some draft picks to compensate us I really feel we can more than make up from their absence.

DRAFT:

One of my favorite times on ROD is Draft season, interacting and reading everybody's mocks, draftee news etc. and of of course our unique ROD draft.
Unlike most years, I haven't had the time to go through multiple positions. I've really only taken a look at RB's and WR's so far.
I feel like these potential gems are game changers that are flying under the radar this draft that will be major contributors in the NFL. Also, we have a decent shot at drafting them with our picks (more picks with a trade)
More than likely we are going to have to go to a 2 RB set up if we trade Gurley, which is technically happening already.

My first of my 2 RB's:

Zack Moss, RB Utah

5-10 222lbs. Guy is a breaking tackle machine, 87 last year. 1416 yards, 15 TD's in 2019.

Why he'll drop to us? Ran a 4.65 40 at the combine, not Gurley size, good but not great in the passing game, and the normal with all backs out of college, blocking.
Login to view embedded media View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tU24goTDhE

As you can see he has field speed, breaks many long runs. I really feel like we need 2 RB's to replace Gurley effectively.

Next RB :

Lynn Bowden Jr. RB Kentucky

6-1 200 lbs.
Guy is an ATHLETE, the more guys like this we can get on our team, the more flexible and inventive McVay can be with our offense. Now disclaimer, he played slot WR in college, first 2 QB's get hurt and the ask him to play QB in which he did. Tavon Austin your thinking?

55 broken tackles on 182 rushes. Yeah.
185 att 1468 yards, 13 TD, receptions 30, 348 yards 1 TD

He can break tackles in between the tackles and as a RB his route running is beast and a mismatch for LB's DE's or nickles covering him.

Ohhh btw he can be our game changing returner as well.

My last guy I really feel strongly towards him as a prospect and feel he's extremely underrated and could very well fall to us.

Michael Pittman Jr WR USC

6-4 223 lbs 4.52 40 yd. dash
2019: 101 rec. 1275 yards 11 TD's

Ask this guy and he'll tell you he's always open. King of the contested ball and with his big frame he would be a great red zone target. Goff, does seems to through a bit high at times and Michael Pittman should be able to go snag some of those high ones or off target balls with his big range.

He has an issue of not being able to create separation, but he's very physical, great ball skills, and damn good speed for his size, hell of a blocker.

To conclude I really feel like these 3, placed in the proper situation, has the potential to do some serious damage and they should be available where we pick in the 2nd not to mention any other picks we aquire.

Have you guys come across any other players you feel could be game changers or underrated contributors at the next level?

If Gurley goes....

Would anyone else be interested in Melvin Gordon? I admit to be a huge Badger fan, but I really think he would fit in very well here and may come at a relative bargain given the current market for backs. At 26, he may be willing to take a shorter-term deal in hopes of hitting when the cap goes up in a couple of years.

Jacksonville Jaguars stuck in limbo with no apparent way out

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS STUCK IN LIMBO WITH NO APPARENT WAY OUT

The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the worst-run organizations in the NFL, and the franchise continues to have no direction heading into 2020.

Fortress of suckitude: This team has put together just one winning season since 2008, despite a recent trend of throwing gobs of money at free agents in an attempt to buy its way into the playoffs. During the past 12 years, the team’s record is 63-129 — the lone winning season coming in 2017 when Blake Bortles took them all the way to the AFC Championship Game.

That one season was the glaring exception to the rule, however. And that rule is: The Jaguars have no idea what they are doing when it comes to long-term team building.

What are you doing? Time and time again, the Jaguars have made personnel decisions that just make no sense at all. Just looking at the past year, here’s a recap of the worst decisions the club has made.
Keep swinging: Now in free agency this offseason, the Jaguars have made more decisions that indicate there is no real plan in place. They’ve reportedly agreed to contracts with two free agents so far, but it’s hard to imagine either of them will help Jacksonville get back to its (extremely brief) Sacksonville identity.
  • Darqueze Dennard, cornerback (three-year deal worth $13.5 million): Dennard isn’t a bad cornerback. But in no way is he going to replace the likes of Ramsey or Bouye. He is a serviceable third option.
  • Joe Schobert, linebacker (five-year deal worth $53.75 million): This isn’t the worst deal in the world. Schobert can make tackles and has a knack for being a playmaker. That being said, he’ll be swamped this coming season without some serious help up front — Marcell Dareus is expected to be cut, and Campbell is gone.
Once a fearsome unit, this Jaguars defense has lost much of its bite the past year or so. Now, it’s hard to imagine Jacksonville will feature anything more than an average defensive attack in 2020. Especially considering its top pass rusher, Yannick Ngakoue, has made it clear he wants to be traded.

Gotta have a quarterback: The Jaguars have been really bad when it comes to identifying and evaluating top quarterback talent ever since the Mark Brunell era.
  • In 2003, the Jaguars selected Byron Leftwich No. 7 overall. He was a total bust in Jacksonville and lasted just four seasons.
  • David Garrard, a fourth-round pick in 2002, ended up being the best quarterback the Jaguars have sported since Brunnel. He started 68 games from 2006-10 but was never more than a mediocre pro quarterback.
  • In 2011, the Jaguars selected Blaine Gabbert with the No. 10 overall pick. He has been one of the biggest quarterback busts in recent memory.
  • In 2014, Jacksonville made Blake Bortles the third overall pick. He is now a backup, and like Gabbert, is considered to be one of the biggest busts in recent history.
Now we’re up to date, with the Jags’ most recent failure at this position being the decision to ink Foles to a massive contract last year in free agency. Jacksonville may have lucked into a decent starter selecting former Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew, but the book is still out on him.

The bottom line: There’s a reason all the top players have been begging to get out of Jacksonville these days. The organization has no clear direction, and it seems to not have any awareness about how to handle superstar personalities.

This team is destined to remain mediocre (at best) in the coming years unless Minshew ends up turning into the second coming of Tom Brady. But even then, Brady at least had Bill Belichick’s genius on his side. Minshew has Doug Marrone, who has been a mediocre head coach going all the way back to his days with the Buffalo Bills.

It can’t be easy being a Jaguars fan.

A few random thoughts on this 1st day of FA...

Well, Whit, Blythe, and Floyd are signed for approx $20-23M combined. Doesn’t that pretty much consume our available cap space minus draft picks? We now would have to go the dreaded restructure route to free up more money, huh?

The cap casualty NRC is now a bit better understood. Fine player but money is tight and Ram CB corps is deep, so he was sacrificed.

At least that takes 3 screaming needs off the list for Snead at draft time. He’s now better positioned to take BPA and/or trade up or down in the draft to maximize value.

Anybody think that the Rams can really trade away Gurley and/or Cooks? In a manner that doesn’t ruin our cap situation, I mean? I’ve gotta see it to believe it.

We’re seeing the Rams ‘New Normal’ for offseasons, I think. Extend a very few vets that they most like and let all others walk and wait for the future comp picks. Emphasis VERY few. Maybe a trade here and there. Just the way it is on a loaded roster with 6-8 elite type players getting their big 2nd contracts. Heart wrenching for fans and players alike.

Thank goodness that the Snead/McVay duo have had good draft and FA results. Must continue to do so to provide any hope to reload this roster every year. This can’t be overstated.

I guess the OL doesn’t look like such a big draft project after the Whit and Blythe extensions. There was a time that that OL was everybody’s Job One. Now, probably front 7 looks like it will be getting the lion’s share of draft attention. I see a RB and WR in that draft somewhere, too. Even IF Gurley or Cooks are not traded.

Wonder what are the odds of GZ being extended now that the Cowboys are out of the market for him? BTW, what does it say about Fassel’s opinion of GZ when the Cowboys extended their guy over pouncing on GZ?

Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during the strategy sessions with Staley as to his impressions of existing Ram front 7 players and whether Staley REALLY liked Fowler and Littleton for his ‘new’ D. Since the Rams didn’t make superhuman moves to retain either player, I’m guessing that Staley might prefer other and different ‘types’. Further moves in FA and the draft concerning LB might kinda confirm this one way or the other. The Floyd signing sorta hints that Staley puts a higher premium on run D than Wade did. Might be handy vs the 49ers and Seahawks in particular, huh?

Is it possible that the Rams FO is higher on our ‘19 depth players among our front 7 than most of us fans are? I’m suspecting that they might be. Again, future FA/draft moves will clarify this a bit.

All for now. Thoughts?
