Props from day 2

I was pleasantly surprised to hear the gameday guys, Herbie in particular, say positive things about the Rams draft thus far, especially considering not having a first rounder. The consensus from these guys seems to be is the Rams got good football players who fill needs they have. Which is certainly a positive.

Snead: "We definitely wanted to address those four positions"

Snead: "We definitely wanted to address those four positions"

General manager Les Snead momentarily lost internet service inside his home before the Rams' first draft pick and head coach Sean McVay called the wrong number after another, but those obstacles never got in the way of the them acquiring the talent they felt the team needed on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

Rounds 2-3 saw Los Angeles select Florida State running back Cam Akers, Florida wide receiver Van Jefferson, Alabama outside linebacker Terrell Lewis and Utah safety Terrell Burgess with picks 52, 57, 84 and 104 respectively.

"We definitely wanted to address those four positions," Snead said on a video conference Friday night.

In Akers and Jefferson, L.A. got exactly who it wanted at those picks, according to Snead. McVay said both being available allowed the Rams to "start the day off on the right foot."

Adding to the backfield was a possibility after the release of starter Todd Gurley – McVay said in early April the Rams were doing their homework on this year's class of running backs – though McVay wasn't ready to anoint Akers as the one who would handle a similar role.

"It's to be determined," McVay said. "What he does is he adds great value to the group, and that's the way we're looking at it right now."

McVay views Jefferson in a similar way, with his versatility contributing to a wide receiver room which includes a pair of 1,000 yard receivers in Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods and a capable starter in Josh Reynolds.

"What you feel really good about his three players that are starting players in our offense that come from that receiver group, and I think Van really provides the opportunity to play all three spots," McVay said. "I think he's a really polished route-runner."

In Lewis, the Rams found an outside linebacker who they view as a fit in new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley's scheme. Though Lewis dealt with an upper arm injury that cost him 10 games in 2017 and a torn ACL that cost the entire 2018 season at Alabama, McVay is confident in what he can bring when 100 percent healthy.

"We had a lot of appreciation for his skillset," McVay said. "He's had some injuries, but I think they've been some freak instances. You look at when this guy plays, he's healthy, he's ready to go."

Like Jefferson, Burgess gives the Rams' options on defense with the ability to play either slot cornerback or safety.

"The makeup of the human being, the versatility of his skillset is huge, especially when you look at John Johnson and Taylor Rapp," McVay said. "Feel really good about those guys, but there's a lot of different personnel groupings you can activate defensively where you're playing with three safeties. When you've got a guy that can play safety or that nickel spot based on his athleticism, it's a really exciting thing to be adding to that group.

Overall, both Snead and McVay are pleased with how Day 2 unfolded.

"I think it was a great day, to be able to come away with four players that we had a high appreciation for," McVay said. "They also happened to fill some needs that we felt like we wanted to try to address in this thing."

The best draft in the history of every NFL franchise

Dick was the Man!

Los Angeles Rams: 1983
Los Angeles Rams: 1983

The Rams have had many great drafts in franchise history, but the 1983 picks stand out over the last half century. Second-overall pick Eric Dickerson went on to become one of the greatest running backs in league history, and he was followed by star wideout Henry Ellard in the second round. L.A. landed three more solid NFL players in that draft in linebacker Mike Wilcher (second round), defensive back Vince Newsome (fourth round) and defensive end Doug Reed (fourth round).

My breakdown of the picks

It's clear to me that this was a draft where the FO and coaches made the decision to stress scheme fit. Scheme fit is something I personally really feel strongly about. I've seen too many players get lost in schemes that don't play to their strengths and when they move and play in a scheme that fits their talents they thrive.

Cam Akers: His choice over Dobbins is exactly what I saw all through the draft so far. What really separated Akers from Dobbins is his ability to contribute in the passing game. Not only as a receiver but in pass blocking. Akers has enough speed to rip off big chunk plays, enough speed that if he breaks loose anywhere inside the opponents 50 he's a threat to take it the distance. He's strong enough to break arm tackles and has good field vision you desire when running inside.

Van Jefferson: What can I say but I see him as Kupp v.2. He's probably the best route runner of all the WR's in the draft. Many have far more speed but getting open IMO is more about crisp route running. DB's now days can match speed and safeties with good angles can get there as well. But an elusive WR who creates separation by his breaks are far more consistent as we have seen with Kupp. Now with both of them it's going to be hard for safeties to simply double the deep routes. I never thought Jefferson would drop that far but couldn't be happier that he did.

Terrell Lewis: He's another guy I looked at before the draft. When the talking heads say they think he's second in this draft only to perhaps Chase Young, from what I've seen I'd probably have to agree. When he's healthy he's a very productive edge, the kind OC's must account for. With a D-front of Floyd, AD, Robinson and Lewis that's going to be an extremely good front 4.

Terrell Burgess: This was the only pick I didn't see coming this early. But for them to take him now it forced me to go back and review Johnson's contract. Johnson is in his contract year. In Burgess they have a true FS with excellent speed (4.4 range compared to JJ's 4.6) and very good instincts and vision. On paper he looks like an upgrade. His film reminds me of Weddle when he was drafted by the Chargers. Burgess also allows them to play a lot of 3 safeties without sacrificing speed,

Overall I can say I really like what they have done in these two rounds. I don't see any one of these 4 guys as a miss and expect that within two years they will probably all be starters with all contributing as rookies.

Lets have some fun... Also clear favoritism on the logo front.

Interesting note that both Sarina and JB Long have special Rams vs Chief footballs behind them with their respective names on them, pretty cool little thing the team provided them.

Jackson comes on around 42 minutes in, he's pretty toasty, it's funny.

Whitworth also makes an appearance.

NFL Team Draft Feeds

I'm surprised no team has figured out how great it would be to do this. Fans fucking hate ESPN nowadays and for good reason. The combined NFL product is shit with their idiotic focus on COVID when fans just want to get away from all that shit right now. And fans love the draft. All fans would enjoy seeing THEIR team feed so why don't teams do this?

They have a media center. They have people to manage the show while they bring in past Rams greats to talk ball and picks. They could even dial in some guys like PFF analysts for certain positions that are obviously needs for us. They could maybe even <gasp!> interview team execs in favorable windows or the big dawg himself Mr. Kroenke.

This stuff isn't hard to envision or to see the need for it. You want to be an elite franchise raise the bar on this stuff, and I am sure Stan would be amenable to ponying up for a good product on draft day.

Will Rd 2 really tell us what McVay/Snead think about our roster?

Ok, so I'm assuming that most teams draft BPA within a position of need (maybe a bad assumption).

I see on sports shows when they have the crawl at the bottom of the screen showing team needs that the Rams need DL, LB, and CB.
...and many forum members think OL, RB, WR, LB.

So depending on what happens in the 2nd round tonight (and to a lesser extent the 3rd round), do you think it tells us what MCVAY AND SNEAD think are the Rams biggest needs?
...sure, there's a theory that says the Rams go OL late because they "know" that they can find adequate talent there. I'm not buying that, but what do I know.

My purpose of asking this is an attempt to differentiate how WE see the team and how THE TEAM sees the team.
...or maybe we're all on the same page?

...or maybe they truly take the BPA?

...or maybe the many trade ups and trade backs of the past few years really means they target certain guys and move up...or value a BUNCH of guys equally and move back.

Whatcha got?

2020 Draft; What's on your menu for Rams draft tonight..

I'm doing some thick cut butterfly pork chops I got from local mom and pop market on the Weber. They looked awesome in display case. I'm not use to doing such lean meat on the grill. I usually go the pork steak and ribs route. I'm thinking I'll sear them good and move to cool side of grill. I'll add butter to them if necessary. I also got some brats there I'll prolly throw on and cook so they're done. Got a few upcoming busy days. They are regular and Italian. I'll put these brats up with the best I have eaten.. Good stuff.

The rest will be really simple.. Red beans in a Cajun gravy/sauce and sauerkraut bought from store but not pasteurized. Been eating a lot of sauerkraut lately as it's low carb and high in probiotics. THat said plenty of Mich Ultra's and Cuervo Gold. Let's hear what ya'll are doing. Peace and cheers.

Part of the fun of surprise picks in the first round is that they push quality prospects into day two of the NFL Draft.
Last year was a perfect example, with several of the highest-performing rookies from the 2019 class coming from the second round: Jawaan Taylor (Jacksonville Jaguars), Dalton Risner (Denver Broncos), Elgton Jenkins (Green Bay Packers), A.J. Brown (Tennessee Titans), Mecole Hardman (Kansas City Chiefs) and DK Metcalf (Seattle Seahawks).
This year, there are several talented prospects still available after night one of the NFL Draft. Here’s how the next two rounds might play out Friday night:
Second Round
33. Cincinnati Bengals – Josh Jones, OT, Houston
With the talent available, the Bengals could go in several different directions, including receiver (Denzel Mims) or linebacker (Zack Baun). But they need to invest more resources into the offensive line and Josh Jones has NFL starting-level ability.
34. Indianapolis Colts (from WAS) – Michael Pittman, WR, USC
35. Detroit Lions – Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin
36. New York Giants – Yetur Gross-Matos, EDGE, Penn State
37. New England Patriots (from LAC) – Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame

38. Carolina Panthers – Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor
The Panthers have greater needs, but it might be tough for Matt Rhule to pass on his former receiver from Waco. He speaks very highly of Mims’ talent and work ethic and the upside he offers will be attractive at this point in the draft.
39. Miami Dolphins – JK Dobbins, RB, Ohio State
40. Houston Texans (from ARI) – AJ Epenesa, EDGE, Iowa
41. Cleveland Browns – Jeremy Chinn, DS, Southern Illinois
42. Jacksonville Jaguars – Ezra Cleveland, OT, Boise State
43. Chicago Bears (from LVR) – Xavier McKinney, DS, Alabama
44. Indianapolis Colts – Antoine Winfield, DS, Minnesota
45. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
46. Denver Broncos – Lloyd Cushenberry, OG/C, LSU
47. Atlanta Falcons – Marlon Davidson, DT, Auburn
48. New York Jets – Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah
49. Pittsburgh Steelers – Zack Baun, LB, Wisconsin
50. Chicago Bears – Curtis Weaver, EDGE, Boise State
51. Dallas Cowboys – Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama
If the first round played out a certain way, the Cowboys might have drafted Diggs at No. 17 overall. Instead, they land an offensive playmaker in CeeDee Lamb and are able to grab the athletic cover man in the second round.
52. Los Angeles Rams – Josh Uche, EDGE, Michigan
53. Philadelphia Eagles – Grant Delpit, DS, LSU
54. Buffalo Bills – Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
55. Baltimore Ravens (from ATL) – Ross Blacklock, DT, TCU
56. Miami Dolphins (from NO) – Kyle Dugger, DS, Lenoir-Rhyne
57. Los Angeles Rams (from HOU) – Robert Hunt, OT/G, Louisiana
58. Minnesota Vikings – Neville Gallimore, DT, Oklahoma
59. Seattle Seahawks – Julian Okwara, EDGE, Notre Dame
60. Baltimore Ravens – KJ Hamler, WR, Penn State
With Marquise Brown, Miles Boykin and KJ Hamler at receiver and Lamar Jackson at quarterback, the Ravens would have a track team on offense that will keep defensive coordinators awake at night.
61. Tennessee Titans – Raekwon Davis, DL, Alabama
62. Green Bay Packers – Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson
63. Kansas City Chiefs (from SF) – James Lynch, DT, Baylor
64. Seattle Seahawks (from KC) – Matt Peart, OT, Connecticut
Third Round
65. Cincinnati Bengals – Logan Wilson, LB, Wyoming
66. Washington Redskins – Adam Trautman, TE, Dayton
67. Detroit Lions – Justin Madubuike, DT, Texas A&M
68. New York Jets (from NYG) – Laviska Shenault, WR, Colorado
Based on talent, Shenault belongs in the first round. But due to durability concerns, the Jets get a discount and land him in the third. With a left tackle in the first round and a YAC monster here, Sam Darnold will be a happy quarterback.
69. Carolina Panthers – Amik Robertson, CB, Louisiana Tech
70. Miami Dolphins – Matt Hennessy, OC, Temple
71. New England (from LAC) – Ashtyn Davis, DS, California
72. Arizona Cardinals – Jonathan Greenard, EDGE, Florida
73. Jacksonville Jaguars – Cam Akers, RB, Florida State
74. Cleveland Browns – Willie Gay, LB, Mississippi State
75. Indianapolis Colts – Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia
76. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jacob Eason, QB, Washington
Although he would likely be disappointed to fall this far, Eason couldn’t ask for a better situation. Not only would he go to a coaching staff and scheme that fits his skill-set, but the chance to learn first-hand from Tom Brady is a special education.
77. Denver Broncos – Davon Hamilton, DT, Ohio State
78. Atlanta Falcons – Malik Harrison, LB, Ohio State
79. New York Jets – Cameron Dantzler, CB, Mississippi State
80. Las Vegas Raiders – Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma
81. Las Vegas Raiders (from CHI) – John Simpson, OG, Clemson
82. Dallas Cowboys – Terrell Burgess, FS, Utah
83. Denver Broncos (from PIT) – Bryce Hall, CB, Virginia
84. Los Angeles Rams – Reggie Robinson, CB, Tulsa
85. Detroit Lions (from PHI) – Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame
86. Buffalo Bills – Darrell Taylor, EDGE, Tennessee
Taylor looks the part and has ability, but he needs to let it loose and prove he can translate his talent into consistent football production. And the chance to learn from Jerry Hughes could be what bridges the gap in his development.
87. New England Patriots – Bradlee Anae, EDGE, Utah
88. New Orleans Saints – Akeem Davis-Gaither, LB, Appalachian State
89. Minnesota Vikings – Prince Tega Wanogho, OT, Auburn
90. Houston Texans – Jordan Elliott, DT, Missouri
91. Las Vegas Raiders (from HOU) – Leki Fotu, DT, Utah
92. Baltimore Ravens – Terrell Lewis, EDGE, Alabama
93. Tennessee Titans – Troy Pride, CB, Notre Dame
94. Green Bay Packers – Harrison Bryant, TE, Florida Atlantic
95. Denver Broncos (from SF) – Davion Taylor, LB, Colorado
96. Kansas City Chiefs – Josiah Scott, CB, Michigan State
97. Cleveland Browns (from HOU) – Lynn Bowden, WR, Kentucky
A college quarterback who will transition to receiver, Bowden is a northeast Ohio native with position fit concerns, but there aren’t many questions about his athleticism or ball-handling skills. Cleveland’s offensive staff can get creative with his talent.
98. New England Patriots – KJ Hill, WR, Ohio State
99. New York Giants – Bryan Edwards, WR, South Carolina
100. New England Patriots – McTelvin Agim, DL, Arkansas
101. Seattle Seahawks – Nick Harris, OC, Washington
102. Pittsburgh Steelers – Antonio Gibson, RB, Memphis
103. Philadelphia Eagles – Zack Moss, RB, Utah
104. Los Angeles Rams – Darrynton Evans, RB, Appalachian State
105. Minnesota Vikings – Jabari Zuniga, EDGE, Florida
106. Baltimore Ravens – Ben Bartch, OT/G, St. John’s (Minn.)
