We're Not Done Yet

Rams are 4-5 with an underperforming offense and improving defense. Fat lady hasn't sung that sad season ending song just yet. So let's take a look at the next window of games:

@ New England
Philly
@ New Orleans
Buffalo

After these four games we have 3 divisional games and the Jets. But no need to sweat those yet, because this next stretch is going to determine whether the Rams enter that final stretch ready to fight and maybe win a playoff berth, or unravel and get a better than usual draft pick.

I think the key for this next stretch is three wins. We have to get a few wins out of that group of games so we'll be sitting at 7-6 with the final four games remaining. So how does that happen?

1. Unfuck this OL. I will say again that this year's OL group has the potential to be the best unit we've seen in years. Dotson and Hav on the right are studs. Avila was a plus starter as a rook. So that means 3/5 of our OL positions are plus starters potentially, and Jackson is average at LT, while at Center we have a rook who has improved week to week in Limmer and a veteran who should be able to find his proficiency in there. You can make a fine OL with that. The nature of OL are that the sum of the parts is greater than the parts, when you're talking about a unit that is playing well. Our GSoT OL had two top players in Pace & Timmerman, with solid types around them. This unit has the quality we need to play at a high level.

2. Balance the attack. I know McVay is a pass-first OC and that's never going to change. I'm fine with it. But he's only got 2 weapons in the pass game, and a good secondary is going to be able to handle them and roll it up tight like Miami just did to us because there is no real threat to make them pay deep. So at least until this OL finds its footing again there has to be a plan to balance it on the ground to create the gaps the JAGs we have to rely on in the pass game need to function at high enough efficiency. We have two excellent backs. We have brutes on the OL. Pieces are there.

3. Sort this damn secondary. Our defense has been solid of late vs the run. Solid enough, to where their single biggest issue is eliminating the miscues and busted reads and coverages we are still plagued by on defense. The rush is outstanding. So I don't care who you gotta sit, there should be a path forward with the pieces we have to find at least enough efficiency that once the offense starts firing this defense will perfectly complement it. I think this defense right now, the way they are playing up front, is very close to being a top unit. They just get fucked over by terrible coverage on the back end far too much.

That's the bare minimum to my eye, in order to get this team back on top of things. And in every example we have the talent on the roster to do it. So I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet.

20 Random Midseason Thoughts

1. This is a SPECIAL EDITION of 20RT!

2. Been a busy few months for me… visits from my kids, work stuff, volunteering at an IDF base in Israel, getting/training a new puppy, home renovations. All good stuff, but less time for football talk!

3. So, here we are, 9 games in and, well… not what we hoped for.

4. Injuries are far and away the biggest culprit, particularly at WR and on the OL.

5. The OL injuries hurt us again yesterday, both from the standpoint of Rob “Don’t Know What You’ve Got, ‘Till its Gone” Havenstein’s absence, and the lack of synergy resulting from plugging in 2 players just off the IR.

6. If you’re thinking, “it seems like the Rams never get easy wins these days,” you’re not wrong. Going back to last season, the last 8 Rams victories have been by an average margin of 5.4 points, and the only win that wasn’t a one-score margin was the Vikings game (which, if a face mask had been called, would have been).

7. I love Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams. I think you can win a lot of games with them as your primary skill players. But…

8. … we need more speed on offense. I think a priority for next year’s draft will be adding a WR (or, perhaps, a TE) who not only fits the Rams scheme (good route runner, willing and effective blocker), but also has the speed to scare defenses.

9. Red Zone issues are also a priority. McVay needs to go back to the drawing board on play design, particularly inside the 10. Settling for FGs is costing us too many games.

10. While I have not given up on this season (don’t forget, we were 3-6 last year at this point), I am taking a long-term view of this team, and I there is a lot to be optimistic about.

11. The defense is really starting to come together under Chris Shula. I think he’s only going to improve with experience.

12. It doesn’t hurt to have a young core of Byron Young, Kobe Turner, Braden Fiske and Jared Verse. Such an amazing job by the scouting department and front office in selecting these guys.

13. That said… the secondary needs to become more of a priority, particularly the CB spot. Tre’Davious White was a reasonable bargain-basement gamble, but it didn’t pay off. Next year, we need to use premium capital (FA$ or draft pick) on the position.

14. We also need more from the ILB corps. I get that nickel and dime packages relegate that positions to limited snaps, but that doesn’t mean that undrafted FAs are the best we can do there.

15. I have not seen or heard anything that would cause me to doubt that Matthew Stafford won’t play in 2025, but I do think that the more progress and promise we show in the next 8 games, the more secure his return will be.

16. And, make no mistake… absent a Top 5 pick in the draft (and probably not even with one of those selections), the best starting QB option for the Rams in 2025 is Matthew Stafford. It's not even a close question.

17. I’d like to see a bit more of Blake Corum in the second half of the season.

18. Jared Verse is going to be selected to many Pro Bowls in his career. He is a beast.

19. Right now, the best team in the NFC West is Arizona. Who’da thunk it?

20. Beat the Patriots, get back to .500, and go from there!

I decided to watch the game regardless

So I taught jujitsu tonight and got done around 7pm. By the time I got out of the shower to watch the game it was almost 8pm. So me being me I couldn't help myself and looked up the score with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. The game was over.

So being that I already knew the outcome of the game I decided watch the game regardless. I wanted to see what and how it happened without getting emotional about it.

Truth is it was a really bad decision to start three new offensive linemen tonight. They looked completely out of rhythm and had zero business being on the field. Our backups were overachieving and mcvay reached on this decision. Plain and simple he made a mistake starting these guys. Truth is I'm not even advocating that he pull Jackson, Avila and boom. He has to play them and ride the storm until they have some time as a unit. Then he can then make an educated decision on what pieces to move. Obviously Noteboom will be replaced when Hav gets healthy (hopefully next week).
I saw in another thread that mcvay should cut boom after his performance tonight. I actually agree with that. Boom was awful, he was in wrong stances on different plays and got bullied by a no name defensive line. He is the weak link and it's about time the rams start making some noise in the offensive locker room.
The play calling tonight was completely unimaginative. It was predictable and sloppy. Again no flow to it. Every time they would make a positive they would just do something stupid like fumble, give up a sack, throw an interception, a bad snap, false start, a tipped pass, miss an open RB in the endzone, you get the point. Bad execution has one one finger to point at. McVay. While I love mcvay, he completely underestimated the importance of continuity and actual playtime. Jackson has a handful of snaps this season and almost zero experience playing center in the NFL. Avila played a game and was out for an extended period of time after he played all off-season at center then switched back to guard a week before the season started. I can understand the decision to bring them in to get their feet wet but at what cost? A game? Two games? We were .500 not a one or two loss team. Completely bone headed move by Mcvay.

On the flipside our defense looks much better with Rose at MLB and speights playing on running downs. Speights even flashed one a couple of screens.
Brown is becoming a Stud. Verse is a stud, and Turner is a machine. Our backend needs some work but that will come with time. I didn't expect our defense to be carrying our team at all this year. What's more unfortunate is it's being wasted and making it harder on a young defense that's giving our offense ample opportunities to put up points and failing to do so. Which is leading to our defense being on the field a lot longer than youd want them to be. They're gonna be exhausted by years end if this keeps up.

While I'm disappointed by this loss I did see some good things on offense. Kupp is still a stud and puka needs to shake the rust off or he isn't 100% yet. Williams is a great running back but he needs to refocus at times. Stafford is just like Williams, he'll wow you then throw a turd of a pass for no reason.

I don't see this loss as a back breaker but the rams need a get right game, we haven't had one all season. I fear until we see that game we won't see what we were all expecting to see this off-season when everyone had high hopes.

"Your armchair quarterback, signing off."

Rams' Jalen Ramsey trade first domino in team philosophy change

Rams' Jalen Ramsey trade first domino in team philosophy change

LOS ANGELES -- As the 2022 Los Angeles Rams wrapped up a 5-12 season, the front office recognized the 2021 core that had won Super Bowl LVI was aging.

"You're going to naturally want to run it back [or] repeat, and you bring a lot of those players back," Rams general manager Les Snead said. "When it didn't work out at that point, you got to say, 'OK, who's the core? How many years does that core have together? It's not going to last forever. When is it best to start trying to engineer a new core?'

"That's probably when it really began. ... I don't want to say the clock struck midnight, but the core, that team, that senior class ... it just doesn't last forever."

So, changes were made -- including trading star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins for a third-round pick. To many, the move signaled the Rams' championship window was closing, as they recouped draft capital and started to rebuild instead of sticking to the philosophy famously worn by Snead in the Super Bowl LVI championship parade, on a shirt with his photo and the line, "F--- them picks."

The Rams, after all, won the Super Bowl by taking huge swings to improve their roster, including trading for quarterback Matthew Stafford during the offseason, adding linebacker Von Miller at the trade deadline and signing Odell Beckham Jr. soon after. The moves were made to add to edge rusher Aaron Donald and receiver Cooper Kupp -- two players along with Stafford whom Snead later called the "weight-bearing walls" of the roster.

As the Rams try to put together another Super Bowl contender, they've returned to building the roster in a more traditional way: through the draft. It's an attempt to build a new core alongside the veterans on offense, including Stafford and Super Bowl LVI MVP Kupp. Though it's early in the careers of the team's two draft classes since Ramsey's departure, the success they have had so far indicates the Rams are on their way.

"We'll continue to try to evolve," Rams coach Sean McVay said. "It's different than what it looked like a couple years ago. It's different than what it looked like my very first year in 2017, all of which have allowed us to be able to continue to formulate a lot of good decisions."

Trading Ramsey, who will line up for the Miami Dolphins against Los Angeles on "Monday Night Football" (8:15 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN+), in 2023 was the first sign in a changing approach to the Rams' team-building philosophy. The Rams have evolved from 'F--- them picks' to today's 4-4 team featuring its first first-round draft pick in years.

THE RAMS WERE 7-1 at the trade deadline in 2021, and there was "a confidence level based on where Donald was at in his career" and the fact that outside linebacker Leonard Floyd was "really rolling," McVay said.

"You're saying, 'Hey, a Von Miller-caliber of player comes available. Well, let's go make an attempt to be able to go get him,' and then Odell Beckham Jr. becomes available."

Those moves were just the latest in the swings the Rams had taken to get there, including trading for Ramsey in October 2019 for two first-round picks and one fourth-round pick and then sending quarterback Jared Goff, their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 and a third-rounder in 2021 to the Detroit Lions for Stafford.

"At a time when I stopped liking football as much, I got traded to L.A., and it just drastically changed everything for me," Ramsey recalled of his time with the Rams. "It was just amazing."

Along with trading draft picks, the Rams also paid those superstars, leading to a top-heavy roster, especially after paying Stafford, Donald and Kupp after the Super Bowl victory.

"It's a different approach," McVay said of the ways the Rams built the Super Bowl roster. "Some of it was by necessity. I think you've seen a lot of models that work. I think you have to be able to be committed to whatever that approach is based on all the parameters."

Though the Rams didn't make a trade at the deadline 2022 -- they were 3-4 -- they took two big swings: negotiating with the Carolina Panthers for running back Christian McCaffrey and linebacker Brian Burns. The Panthers traded McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers but did not trade Burns at the deadline.

Once it became clear that the 2022 version of the Rams couldn't run it back the way the roster was built, the team started keeping its draft picks and saving salary cap space.

At the time, team president Kevin Demoff referenced the change in mindset happening out of necessity: "[We're] probably a few players away from winning in the Super Bowl. How do we go start to acquire those players rather than saying, 'Hey, we're going to go create all this space for one player.'"

In September 2024 -- after his first season in Miami -- Ramsey signed a three-year contract extension worth $24.1 million per year, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history for a second time in his career. The Rams had done the same for Ramsey four years earlier, signing him to a five-year, $105 million extension after trading for him in 2019.

On Thursday, McVay said Ramsey knows "the respect, the admiration I have for him as a player and what he meant to this team."

"There were a lot of tough decisions that were on the horizon for us as a football team," McVay said. "And it didn't have anything with us not wanting him here. There was a lot of things that we had to do as a result of some previous years and things of that nature.

"He understood that, so it was important for us based on what he had done for us to try to be able to find a situation that suited both parties. Miami was somebody that was interested ... [and] he was excited about that."

During the league meetings in March 2023, after trading Ramsey and a quiet free agency period, Snead quipped, "We're the boring Rams this year."

At those same meetings, Demoff made it clear the Rams weren't punting on the 2023 season. The Rams started 3-6 before winning seven of their last eight games to make the playoffs.

"There is always going to be at the macro level, some version of where ... hey, you have players that have grown up together," Snead said Tuesday. "They're in their prime and then there is going to be the natural recourse of somewhat starting over with that as you begin anew, start afresh and start adding new players. That's the big picture thing of what we've gone through from a standpoint of back in 2021."

WHEN THE RAMS drafted linebacker Jared Verse in April, it was especially significant because it was the team's first first-round pick since trading up to select Goff in 2016.

But while this might be a different way to build a team compared with their last Super Bowl roster, the Rams are beginning to see the method pay off.

Rams rookies have seven sacks and six interceptions this season, both the most in the NFL, according to ESPN Research. In the 2024 draft, the Rams selected five defensive players: Verse, defensive lineman Braden Fiske (second), Kamren Kinchens (third), outside linebacker Brennan Jackson (fifth) and defensive tackle Tyler Davis (sixth).

Verse (3.5) and Fiske (3.0) rank first and second, respectively, among rookies in sacks this season. Verse also entered Week 10 leading rookies with nine tackles for a loss, 24 pressures and 13 quarterback hits.

This group is built around defensive players drafted last year, including tackle Kobie Turner and linebacker Byron Young. Last season, Rams rookies had 19 sacks, the most in the NFL.

And in 2024, the Rams have 15 sacks by players in their first two seasons, which is the most in the NFL, according to ESPN Research.

The success was especially apparent in the Rams' Week 9 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. In that game, Verse had a sack, Fiske had two, Kinchens had two interceptions and Davis had half a sack.

Fiske is one of two rookies this season to record multiple sacks in a game, according to ESPN Research. The Rams paid a significant cost to trade up for him. According to ESPN's draft pick valuations, Los Angeles' trade of picks No. 52, 155 and a 2025 second to Carolina for pick No. 39 was the most expensive Day 2 "overpay" of at least the past six drafts.

"There was an investment in this draft class, especially when you look at Jared Verse and Braden Fiske," McVay said. "I thought both of those guys made their presence felt in a big way [against Seattle]. I thought [Week 9] was kind of a coming-out party for Braden Fiske in a way. He's done some really good things. It's tough that he only was charted with two sacks. He sure had an impact on a lot more than that when you go back and you watch the film."

It is Verse' attitude and edge on the field that stood out to McVay in the draft process and his "toughness" reminded him of Donald and Ramsey.

"He's got some s--- to him that I really like," McVay said of Verse. "That's been big for our defense. I think guys feed off that and it's a good thing. You need some guys like that. Aaron [Donald] had that to him too. He just might not have talked as loud, but the way he would stare a hole through people they knew. Ramsey was like that.

"Sometimes those best defensive players, they have some stuff to them that you're like, 'Oh man, we need that.' You need that edge, that energy, that swagger and Jared Verse definitely has that."

And while Snead and McVay were adamant all offseason that replacing Donald -- a future Hall of Famer -- was not a task for one player, it is also clear that they have built a group they hope can be the core of their next Super Bowl team. One built through the draft.

Nick Nash

I have been watching this guy for a couple of years, great size 6' 3 and hands and gets a good amount of YAC.
Leading the nation in catches and TD's and 3rd in yards.

Not sure where he will go but would be a great value in round 3 or 4 and looks like a McVay type. He isn't asked to block like he would need to as a Ram but is capable when asked.

Kamren Kinchens' Big Play

No ... not the 103-yard interception pick-six.

Not the diving 2nd interception inside the five-yard-line either.

It's funny how you can miss something that is a huge factor in a big win. I was watching a re-play of Sunday's win for the 4th time; and there was a tremendous play by Kinchens that I had not previously focused on.

In Overtime, with the Seahawks driving, we all remember the 4th-and-1 stop .... AND ... we all remember the 3rd-and-1 stop to set-up fourth down. However, it's the second down play that I wanted to note. The Seahawks had 2nd-and-7 from the Rams' 22. Kenneth Walker went over the left-side and cut up-field untouched headed for a certain first down inside the 15-yard-line.

Kinchens came flying-up from inside the 10-yard-line. He and Walker were running at full speed and met head-on, chest-to-chest just inside the 17. There were no blockers or other defenders on the play. It was just Kenneth Walker (at 211 pounds) and Kamren Kinchens (at 207 pounds).

Kinchens stopped him cold ... dead-in-his-tracks. It was a beautiful one-on-one run-stuff by the rookie safety.

That play set-up the 3rd-and-1, which led to the 4th-and-1.

If any of you guys have access to view that play, I would strongly recommend taking a few minutes to do so.

NEW YORK JETS VS. ARIZONA CARDINALS (-1)

Storyline of the game: Don’t count these teams out just yet

After starting the season with a 1-3 record in September, this Cardinals team has gone on to facilitate a fantastic stretch of games, coming away with a 4-1 record in the five games to follow. The Cards were the cardiac kids in October, winning three of their four games by two or fewer points. To start November, this team produced one of its best outings of the year on both sides of the ball, smashing the Bears by three scores.

Week 9 also saw the Jets halt a five-game slide with a win against the injury riddled Texans. Credit is in order to this Jets pass rush that absolutely blasted C.J. Stroud at every chance it got, rackings up 33 total pressures and eight sacks. That performance catapulted this Jets defense into the top five of pressure rate (41.0%) on the season.

Matchups to watch: Cardinals LG Evan Brown vs. Jets DI Quinnen Williams

Quinnen Williams has been wreaking havoc as a pass rusher on the interior of this Jets defense over the past few matchups. Since Week 6, Williams owns an impressive 85.7 PFF pass-rush grade — the highest at his position over that span — due largely to racking up five sacks and a 17.4% pass-rush win rate.

Interestingly, Brown has been producing similarly impressive marks as a pass protector over that span. Since Week 6, the formerly undrafted guard has generated a 77.0 PFF pass-blocking grade, having surrendered just two pressures across 121 pass sets.

Additional news:

Arizona has acquired Ege Baron Browning from Denver in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
New York has traded WR Mike Williams to Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick.

MIAMI DOLPHINS VS. LOS ANGELES RAMS (-1)

Storyline of the game: Turnarounds on the horizon for these franchises?

A handful of weeks ago, this matchup would not have carried anywhere near the same intrigue as it currently does. That’s due to the recent performances these two teams have produced to varying degrees.

The Rams look like an entirely different squad after returning both Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua to the lineup. This offense is proving difficult for even some of the league’s more savvy defenses like Minnesota and Seattle.

While the Dolphins have yet to convert a win since the return of Tua Tagovailoa to the lineup, they’re played far more inspired offensively. Tagovailoa has some ways to go before he’s fully dialed back in, but producing a 74.5 PFF passing grade over his two games since return is a step in the right direction.

Matchups to watch: Rams WR Puka Nacua vs. Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey

After going down in Week 1 and missing the next five games, the dynamic receiver returned in Week 8 to produce a vintage Nacua outing. But the following week, he was again missing from the lineup for an extended period, this time ejected after getting into an altercation on the field and throwing a punch. If he’s able to put together a full game, Nacua has the potential to eclipse the 81.8 receiving grade he produced in his return.

The veteran corner Ramsey has been on his game in the first half of 2024 and is coming off one of the top performances of his career. In Week 9, Ramsey recorded the 10th-game of his career, having earned a 90.7 coverage grade while coming away with his first interception of the season and a 44.4 passer rating allowed into his coverage.

Additional news:

Rams first-year Edge Jared Verse captured the honor of being named PFF’s midseason Defensive Rookie of the Year.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (-6) VS. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Storyline of the game: Christian McCaffrey possible to return

After missing the first eight games of the 2024 campaign due to concerns over a calf/Achilles injury, Christian McCaffrey has returned to practice in limited fashion to start the week, with the potential for him to be able to make his season debut. With some tough matchups to come in the latter half of the 49ers’ schedule, getting back your best player is always good news.

Unfortunately, the Bucs still find themselves navigating uncertain waters regarding injury. However, despite being down their two best receivers, Baker Mayfield and this Bucs offense managed to take the Chiefs to overtime — just to never possess the ball, losing 30-24 in Kansas City. That marks this team’s third-straight loss, dropping below .500.

Matchups to watch: 49ers RG Dominick Puni vs. Buccaneers DI Calijah Kancey

Getting the talented second-year DI Calijah Kancey back from injury in Week 6 was supposed to help fix this struggling run defense for the Bucs, but it hasn’t netted the results many would have expected. Kancey currently holds just a 28.9 run defense grade this season — ranking 128th out of 129 qualified interior defenders. While he may have recorded two tackles for loss or no gain since his return, he also has surrendered a negatively-graded snap over 33% of his run fits.

Paving the way for McCaffrey’s possible return will be rookie RG Puni. While the young blocker has performed well overall this season — earning a top-15 run-blocking grade at the position — some issues with consistency have sprouted. Over his last two outings, Puni has earned just a 58.0 PFF run blocking grade, due in part to being defeated on 12.2% of his run blocks.

Additional news:

San Francisco has signed FS Tashaun Gipson Sr. to the practice squad.

God just keep it going...

hey you guys... how about that rams pass rush!!?...

i was pretty buzzed (as usual) during my rams watch at my local moose lodge...

so i'm BS'n with one of my friends at the lodge...

now for more context, this was pretty early in the season...

and in my less than 100% having it together ability, i remember telling my buddy (a raider fan) that the rams just might have the best young d-line in the league...

what a bunch of bullshit that turned out to be...

the rams have nowhere near the best young pass rush in the league...

they just might have THE best pass rush in the league...

get on board people...

i'm driving the bus...

best pass rush..

best QB when you need it most...

by far one of the best coach's / playcallers.. thanks to matt staffords coach on the field ability..

with all that...

no way is this team a superbowl contender... lmao
