11 personnel podcast with a very fair assessment on both sides of Goff/Mcvay

In this whole Goff/Mcvay saga.

Rich: the Rams signed jared to his contract. Jared was Mcvay's GUY. So, you bought it, you own it, you fix it. Rich says that there's no way that you can convince him that a guy like Mcvay couldn't figure out how to use Goff at all. Rich reiterates that Jared did not regress beyond fixing. Especially since Goff's scouting report in college points out the very thing he struggles with (speeds up under pressure, see it, throw it player , who doesn't make reads or adjust). So rich says you can't criticize jared in 2020 for known weaknesses in 2016. Says that the offense scheme failed to highlight his strengths the same way it did in the past. And if all of the things are true (that Jared is who he always was), "then why did you pay him?".

Jourdan:

Mcvay had to readjust his offense because of jared not being able to hit the big throws and turning the ball over. He wants to get back to vertical passing. Mcvay felt he had to change the offense too much for Goff and it still failed due to turnovers etc. Teams thought that the offense under Jared was "easy to defend" when you get jared on down and distance. She specifically mentioned his slow processing and turnovers, with how the turnovers happened at the worst time ever. "this has been in process for two years".

Jourdan adds that contracts don't happen in a vacuum. Some things changed after the deal and jared didn't evolve as expected. "Sean evolved and jared did not. That's nobody's fault but it led to a separation".

And she says that the front office is invested in Mcvay and his evolution. Not any particular player.

Former green beret figuring iut

This is interesting. I am not saying that McVay and Snead have done poorly in the character department. I think they are good at it. But this sounds like something McVay and Snead would have been interested in.

Rams contract restructures + FA/draft targets

1612260652219.png

Lets assume we restructure a few contracts and have between $21M-$38M in cash to spend. Who do we resign that's still on the roster? Which FAs from around the league do we target?

---I think Reynolds, Everett, and Floyd are gone 100%. Malcom Brown gone. Troy Hill gone. Austin Blythe seeya later. I think it would be great to resign John Johnson but he'll be pricey and with all our young safeties I don't see it happening tbh. Rapp, Fuller, Burgess, Nick Scott. That brings us to Darius Williams, Ebukam, and Morgan Fox. Would be great to resign Fox, he was fantastic in very limited snaps. Does he get more money elsewhere? Do we bring Ebukam back for cheap? 4.5 sacks and he is only 25. Darius Williams is an interesting one because he's a RFA. First round tender on him I'd guess? What do you guys think? Him and Ramsey seem important to this defense.

---Based on those decisions which FAs from around the league do we target? Center or Guard? Speed WR? OLB?

Also here are our updated draft picks... to be honest I haven't even dug into draft prospects or senior bowl stuff yet, any early thoughts on who we should we target in the draft after FA signings?

Rams updated projected 2021 draft picks
  • 2nd round, 57th overall
  • 3rd round comp (Fowler)
  • 3rd round comp (Holmes)
  • 4th round comp (Littleton)
  • 6th round, 183rd overall
  • 7th round, 215th overall

My favorite WR ........... this week

Jonathan Adams - Arkansas St. 6'3" - 200lbs

Not sure how fast of a 40 he runs, but he looks to have a step on the DB on most plays. Big frame, can play through contact, knows how to use his body, also plays basketball. My favorite play is at the 6:40 mark. He is on the left side and blocks on a running play .... he takes out 2 defenders with 2 separate blocks.
Also, impressed with the highlights at the start of the video where he scores 3 TD's against their toughest opponent, K-State.

River's post Stafford/Senior Bowl Mock 2.0 ...

A wild off season for Rams fans so far, we've gotten a new starting QB and lost a 2021 3'rd round draft pick, to say nothing of our not receiving another 1'st round draft pick until at least 2024. Our CAP is tight, but media pundits have explained how restructuring contracts belonging to Aaron Donald & Jalen Ramsey, as well as extending Stafford can get us near breaking even. My next goals revolve around re-signing Leonard Floyd to a long term contract and keeping Whitworth at LT for at least one more year, and this will require trading both Brockers & Havenstein. Brockers will go to Dallas for a 3'rd round pick (#75) and Havenstein will go to Carolina for their 4'th. (#103), giving the Rams a total of three 3'rd round draft picks and two 4'th round picks once you include the compensation picks for Fowler, Holmes and Littleton. Upon re-signing Floyd, retaining Whitworth, offering a 1'st round tender to Darious Williams and signing our new draft class, i'm uncertain there will be anything left to participate much in free agency. If the Rams should find an extra draft pick thru Snead's dealings or an extra couple bucks available for a free agent, i'd be looking at a speedy WR/Return Specialist and someone to compete with Jackson & Koski for that #5/6 WR spot. 7 of the named players in this draft mock performed well & stood out at the Senior Bowl and/or the practices.

* Denotes drafted rookie

RIP Dustin Diamond

Dustin died today. Only weeks after finding out he had cancer.

Screech was such an iconic character. For people around my age(36)....Saved By The Bell was huge. He portrayed one of the most well known characters in sitcom history I would say.

I know he had his issues in his personal life, but from what I've read, he had corrected those issues and was even making headway with his old cast members.

Sad.

Final* Evaluation of Goff’s Rams Tenure

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

So how should we look at Jared Goff's Rams tenure now that it has come to an abrupt and somewhat surprising end?

Certainly, it was marked by ups and downs. His rookie season was ugly, but its not difficult to see why, given the level of talent and the types of schemes he had to work with. I didn't give up hope after his first games, but I certainly was concerned.

Then Sean McVay enters the picture, the OL and receiving corps are improved, and for two years, Goff is a Pro Bowl QB who leads the Rams within one game of the title. I still saw the need for growth, but I truly believed at that point that we had a franchise QB. So did the Rams, as Goff was rewarded with a big contract extension.

Then it went South. The OL declined, Gurley did too and then departed, and Goff's production took a big dip. Goff cannot be blamed or absolved in full for this, and we can debate until the end of time the relative levels of blame. What is clear, though, is that Goff was not able to transcend these issues and raise his game to another level. McVay lost confidence, and now Goff's a Lion.

You note that there is an asterisk in the thread title. That's because this review may not be entirely final. What if Goff tears it up in Detroit, while Stafford's production is comparable to what we've seen from Goff during the past two seasons?

In any event, we're at the end of Goff's time here, so how will we view him? Is his legacy the hefty price to acquire, pay and, ultimately, move him from the team? Is it the legacy of a QB who was good, but just not good enough?

Time will tell, but I do think that, regardless of what we might think of him right now, he remains one of only three QBs to take the Rams to a Super Bowl. That's historically noteworthy, if nothing else.

I also, at this juncture, based on what I know, I feel that Goff gave the Rams his best effort and was a solid citizen and a good teammate. So, as he departs, I'll send him off with a "thanks" and a "good luck," even if I hope Matthew Stafford outplays him by a HUGE margin over the next few seasons!

And with that, I'm ready to move on to the Stafford Era.

My new favorite Mic'd Up ever

OK, I looked to see if this were posted already and apologize if I missed it, but this is the most unbelievable 2 mins I've seen while a guy has the Mic.

Not to take anything away from Goff, who is a tough SOB, but this is a whole new level. Staffords shoulder is basically falling off.

It's Super Bowl Week - aka thankful for football in 2020 thread

I know a lot of people aren't excited for the Super Bowl this year, especially because of a certain QB. Myself included.

But having said that, there was a time when we didn't think we would even see a football season, let alone have a Super Bowl on schedule.

The NFL did a fantastic job of handling COVID for the most part, save a few hiccups (Ravens and Broncos situations). We saw minimal delays, no cancelled games or random makeup weeks. Even more thankful considering the newness of it all and how to handle COVID. Now 30 of the 32 teams' fans are already looking toward next year. Hopefully 2021 will be even better.

The logistics of producing just one NFL game that's non-televised is crazy. Now compound that with the national and prime time games, there's just so much more involved. I think a lot of people take it for granted.

Season was full of ups and downs, like any other year. But this year was special. Thankful to have seen it.

What’s your success-o meter reading

So thinking about the trade and everything that’s going on

What level of success do the rams need to attain for you to think that this trade was worth it ?

I’m sure there’s many here that hate giving up goff and may who think it’s already a success because JG is no longer a ram

For me anything less than a Super Bowl win and it’s not worth it .. we could have rode out next year on goff and even if it was a poor season we would have draft capital to draft the new QB

I like Stafford as a competitor and a player I don’t necessarily agree he makes us any better he’ll we could 16-0 and not win the super bowl and I still think it’ll be a failure

Dear Jared...

Dear Jared,

What a trip this week has been huh?

Yea it's been like that for thousands of Rams fans as well.

As you leave and start your next journey in a new city I wanted to leave you with a few thoughts.

First off, Thank You for being one of the best QB's this Ram organization and fan base has had.

In four years as a starter for the Rams you are 1 of 3 QB's that has lead us to a Super Bowl.

You lead an offense that was the envy of the league and the highest scoring offense over two years.

We will never forget that.

You lead several exciting wins over the Mahomes, Bradys, Rodgers, Brees and Wilsons of the world.

To a huge amount of Rams fans the recent offensive struggles were not solely on you.

We believe playcalling, key injuries and the failure to address the Oline were part of the problem.

I personally believe Mcvay is not willing to admit this.

So you are the scapegoat.

You deserve better than being the target of the blame and how this was handled, but it is what it is and it's time to move on.

Head up man. Go kill it in Detroit.

We have to support our new QB, our coach and our team, not because we agreed with this trade, but because we are Rams Fans.

But as you go, know that your Jersey will be framed and on the wall where I watch Rams games every weekend.

Right next to other Rams Greats.

You were one bad ass Mofo that I won't forget.

And if you raise the Lombardi Trophy one day, we will be celebrating right there with you.

Peace.

Why I'm still pissed off about this off season

First off let me say one thing. I have no problem with Matt Stafford I think he's a fine QB he's not in my top 10 and I don't know that he makes us a contender by himself with our other issues. He's my favorite baseball players best friend and I hope he wins for us. I don't care that Jared Goff is on the Lions now I don't and won't root for him or them I'm a Rams fan. The line I use for every free agent still holds true. I wish them nothing but the best and hope they succeed unless they're playing us.

My problem is this is the second time the media has said we've gone all in on a closing window. The first was when McVay took over the team and we had a QB and RB on rookie deals. They went hog wild in free agency and the trade market and brought in a bunch of big names. This round of pushing all the chips to the middle of the table ended with a SB loss that's fine it happens. Lesson learned?

We followed that disappointing loss and performance by McVay's offense by signing Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks to long term big money deals and continued to wheel and deal and bring in more big name trades/free agents. People say you can't predict Gurleys knee going the way it did but his knee issues were nothing new he had them in college. We signed him before his rookie deal was up and he never played a down on his high priced extension. Lesson learned?

Brandin Cooks came to the Rams as a big play WR capable of taking the top off the defense and expanding the Rams offense. He succeeded at that role and we were a better team with him in it. He also came to us with concussion issues but we sent a 1st round pick to the Pats of all teams to get him knowing he was a good player but also knowing concussions were a major issue. We did this time at least get one year out of the big extension before sending the player and a $36 million dead cap hit that cost us a 1st rounder to the Texans for a 2nd round pick and a 4th rounder in 2022. Lesson learned?

Then a full year before his rookie deal was up we signed Jared Goff to a monster contract which again the player never played a down for us under that new contract. McVay again responsible for an extension before it's needed on a player he couldn't make work in the offense only to bail on the player. This time sending away picks because the contract was deemed so bad that we had to give the Lions our QB and 2 future first round draft picks plus a 3rd rounder this year.

McVay and Snead have done wonders to rebuild the Rams from the years of futility after the GSOT. But as a fan of this team for 40+ years I don't want him ever to resign another player on offense especially as early as he did with Jared.

Had they not given Gurley and Cooks those big contracts maybe Roger Saffold is still in Horns and our OLine is much better. Maybe Greg Zeurlein is sill a Ram even though eventually we got Rudy Gay who seems like a good kicker. Maybe we're able to afford a few nice free agents to make the team better.

Had they waited until the end of the 2019 season we could have ridden Jared on his 5th year option and it would have saved us money this past season and beyond. It also would have cost us less to trade for Stafford since we didn't have to pay the Lions to take on that contract. Hell maybe we're able to trade for him before this season and it cost us a lot less.

I love the Rams as much as anybody around here but these continued swings and misses with signing our own offensive players, McVay's expertise and his side of the ball is where these problems happen, is really alarming. This is the 2nd time they've gone all in for a SB win instead of built up a solid team around pieces. Hope this run ends better than the last one and hold your breath if we sign any offensive player to an extension.

Ram's Dead Cap Issues

Rams now own the two biggest dead cap hits in NFL history

To say the Los Angeles Rams have made a few contractual mistakes in the last three years would be a major understatement. Their deals for Brandin Cooks, Todd Gurley and Jared Goff were costly when they were handed out, but now that none of the three players will be on the team in 2021, it looks significantly worse.

By agreeing to trade Goff to the Lions on Saturday night, the Rams will incur a dead cap charge of $22.2 million in 2021. That’s the largest single-season dead cap hit in NFL history, surpassing … Cooks’ of $21.8 million from last year.

Here are the five largest single-season dead cap hits taken on by a team in league history.

Dead Cap Hit Taken On by a Team

2021: J. Goff, LAR, $22.2M
2020: B. Cooks, LAR, $21.8M
2019: A. Brown, PIT, $21.2M
2021: M. Stafford, DET, $19M
2010: J. Russell, $18.9M

You’re probably wondering why Gurley’s name isn’t on that list after the Rams cut him last offseason, taking on a boatload of dead money. The reason is he was designated a post-June 1 cut, which spread his $20.15 million dead cap charge across the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The Rams are paying for these contracts in a big way, severely limiting their flexibility in free agency. Had the Rams not signed Goff or Gurley to extensions, they could’ve moved on from both players without taking on any dead money.

But here they are paying both players to be on other teams because they chose to sign them much earlier than necessary.

Rams have two biggest dead cap hits in NFL histroy (usatoday.com)

The Ram's had $38,466,188 in dead cap last year and $30,792,097 so far this year.

My theory on Snead and his hatred of 1st round picks

Snead getting much grief on his latest 1st rounders for Stafford/Goff trade. I was SHOCKED by the news, expecting we'd actually RECEIVE draft picks and instead gave them away. After some time to reflect, I now this differently.

Given the new rules around compensation for departed free agents (and maybe coaches), Snead has rerun the model and is "selling high" as his value of 1st round picks is clearly lower than other GMs. He reasons that you go get your proven guy with those high picks, use draft for your mid/late picks, and if they leave you'll get compensation with more picks anyway. His task is to get the players the coach wants, and he is relentless about it.

My interpretation from his mumbling/bumbling interviews where he always states the personnel stew is draft plus FA, his spicy recipe is slightly different than other GMs.

Right, wrong, or indifferent, you got to give the guy props for commitment/consistency.

I'm now officially excited to see this team next season.
