NFL signs new TV Deal; The Rams could get a Bailout

Anonymous poster

Whatever restructures they do count against caps for the near future. they've already kind of mortgaged their future with all of these restructuring contracts. I wonder if maybe they won't with Stafford.

The Rams are becoming the sounding block for "you better be careful" because the piper is going to be knocking on your door to collect his money.

Maybe they won't with Stafford CROMWELL " the Anonymous poster" but with all the upcoming TV contracts and the projected massive increase of the salary cap over the next 2 seasons, the Rams might be able to dodge a piercing bullet.

NFL signs new TV deals with ESPN/ABC, FOX, NBC & Amazon
Jas Kang 3 hrs ago

After the pandemic resulted in a major financial hit for the NFL, the league announced new TV deals with ESPN/ABC, FOX, NBC and Amazon. The new contracts will run through the 2033 season, with the networks paying roughly a combined $110 billion, per the Sports Business Journal.

“These new media deals will provide our fans even greater access to the games they love. We’re proud to grow our partnerships with the most innovative media companies in the market,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

“Along with our recently completed labor agreement with the NFLPA, these distribution agreements bring an unprecedented era of stability to the League and will permit us to continue to grow and improve our game.”

As part of the deal, Amazon’s streaming service will be the exclusive home of Thursday Night Football, marking the first time in history that the NFL signs a contract with a provider that will exclusively broadcast over-the-top. The deal takes effect for the 2022 campaign. The NFL Network will also air select Thursday matchups throughout the season.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcasts will also be different, beginning with the 2023 season. There will be six Monday doubleheaders each season, with the early game on ESPN followed by the late matchup on ABC.

NFL Agrees to New TV Rights Contracts Reportedly Worth $110B over 11 Years

JOSEPH ZUCKER MARCH 18, 2021

The NFL announced Thursday it signed media-rights deals with Amazon, CBS, ESPN/ABC, Fox and NBC, which will go into effect in the 2023 season.

According to Sports Business Journal's John Ourand and Ben Fischer, the league will collect $10 billion annually over 11 years.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said:

"These new media deals will provide our fans even greater access to the games they love. We're proud to grow our partnerships with the most innovative media companies in the market.

Along with our recently completed labor agreement with the NFLPA, these distribution agreements bring an unprecedented era of stability to the League and will permit us to continue to grow and improve our game."

The NFL is a money making machine and the future of the salary cap might be way different over the next 2 seasons. Teams that seem like they're in turmoil as of today could look way different this time next year.

Even with all their bad contracts, the Rams may not have to pay the piper as much as we think they will.

Teenage You

I want us all to jump in our time machines and head back to that magical time(at least for me) when you were a teenager, in your room, laying on the bed thinking or whatever the hell you were doing...what Album was on repeat?

For me, I was in High School from 99-2003.

My favorite albums were:

Linkin Park-"Hybrid Theory"

Good Goo Dolls-"A Boy Named Goo" & "Dizzy Up The Girl"

Third Eye Blind-"Third Eye Blind"

But the album that stood out the most and that I listened to over and over and over, burning out the eye on my CD player...

Blink 182-"Enema of the State"

If you were a Blink fan or a fan of that genre in general, you could listen to it front to back. I would sit in my room and draw or work out with my 20lb dumb bells. Lol and just listen.

Today me and the wife headed up to Costco and I realized she had my Blink 182 cd in her car. I put it in. It was scratched to shit, being over 20 years old. Sounded great and took me right back to those years...just laying on my bead, staring at the ceiling, absorbing it all. Great shit.

Rams salary cap update after initial wave of moves

df99d42caa7eb9c590e3117de14508f8

It’s been a fairly quiet first week of free agency for the Los Angeles Rams. They’ve suffered more losses than additions and have primarily been working to get their salary cap situation under control.
They entered the week more than $33 million over the salary cap, needing to get under the $182.5 million limit by Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. They did just that, announcing they were under the cap on Tuesday afternoon.
Now that Matthew Stafford’s contract is officially on the books, Michael Brockers is gone and Leonard Floyd’s cap hits have been established, where do the Rams stand in terms of spending money?
Current cap space

According to Over The Cap, the Rams are still $18.7 million over the limit - which is obviously not up to date. That's because OTC’s calculations only include two of the five restructures that the Rams have reportedly done: Jalen Ramsey and Robert Woods. It doesn’t include Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp or Andrew Whitworth, who all reportedly restructured their deals before the deadline. So if you factor in those three transactions, the Rams would clear another $26.3 million. That would give them $7.65 million in cap space, according to OTC’s salary cap calculator. With $7.65 million to spend, it would put them 19th in the NFL in terms of estimated cap space, up from where they currently sit (31st). This calculation includes Brockers’ contract coming off the books (2.67 million in dead money), Jared Goff’s dead cap hit of $24.7 million, Darious Williams’ $4.77 million first-round tender and Floyd’s $3.33 million dead cap charge from the void year on his previous contract.
How much space is needed for the rookie class?

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports
The Rams must leave some room for their rookie class, of course. Over The Cap estimates that the Rams’ effective cap space needed to sign their draft class is only $1.02 million. That’s calculated by multiplying their total number of picks (6) by $660,000, and subtracting that sum from the total rookie pool of $4,981,056. The reason is that each draft pick will replace a player already counting against the cap as part of the top-51 rule. So the total space needed is much less than the sum of the rookies’ 2021 cap hits. So if you subtract $1.02 million from their estimated cap space of $7.65 million, you get $6.63 million in spending money as of now. It’s not much, but it puts them in better shape than they were in to begin the week.
How else can they create more cap space?
6a2dbb4a28d9776726d55fa85515bc8a

Now, the question becomes, what’s next? How can the Rams create even more cap space to sign free agents? They can start by either extending Stafford’s contract or simply restructuring it. Restructuring would clear about $12.3 million this year, which would put the Rams close to $19 million in effective cap space. They could also cut Kenny Young to save another $2.18 million, putting them over $20 million in cap space. It’s unlikely that A’Shawn Robinson will be released after Brockers was traded, but cutting him after June 1 would save $3.75 million. If Austin Blythe returns, Brian Allen could be cut to save $920,000 – though releasing him seems unlikely. Signing Williams to an extension to lower his cap hit from the first-round tender ($4.77 million) is another possibility. There aren’t many ways left for the Rams to create cap space, but as they stand right now, they have enough money to sign a few more free agents, as well as their draft class. Just don’t expect a big splash in free agency.

No exciting articles about Stafford/Goff trade becoming official.

Today was supposed to be the Goff/Stafford trade is done and official.

We can assume they both passed their physicals and the Lions and Rams can now balance their salary cap books to make adjustments as needed.

Some of us (myself) might have expected the Rams would quickly extend Stafford today and free up more cap space to land a free agent prospect nobody might have expected they could sign. Didn't happen.

I read one article that pointed out Stafford officially became a Ram today. There was nothing else elaborated. No other legit NFL sites mentioned it or what might/could happen going forward.

I'm hoping this is the calm before the storm but maybe I put too much stock into Stafford signing a quick extension so the Rams could add at least one impact free agent as soon as this trade became official.

Maybe I got this one wrong.

Getting Stafford to quickly sign an extension to free up cap dollars was probably wishful thinking.

Free-agent OL Kyle Long leaves Raiders without deal, signs with Kansas City ...

Last week, former Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long came out of retirement. After a year out of football, Long hopes to have put his significant injury history behind him. With the Raiders turning over nearly their entire offensive line, they became the first to give him a look.
Monday, Long — the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long — showed up at the Raiders facility to meet with the team. He stayed over in Vegas and worked out on Tuesday. And you’d have to think if the money were right, the team would not have let him leave. But leave he did, tweeting out Tuesday afternoon that he was on a plane out of town.

Per multiple reports, Kansas City is Long’s next destination. The rival Chiefs are another team that had an offensive line upheaval, cutting both tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchel Schwartz on failed physical designations and center Austin Reiter expected to leave in free agency.
Long played mostly right guard in his seven seasons in Chicago, but stepped in to start at right tackle for one season. The 32-year-old may not be able to command too much in free agency in terms of a commitment. He hasn’t played a full season since 2015 and averaged less than eight games per season.

Would love to bring this cat in, but specially for starting RT duty so long as the contract is heavily discounted and we gain more CAP by trading Hav. That would be quite a positional battle imo. And you just know that both Chris and Howie would stir the pot making things even more fun. Imagine Whitworth and Long outside and Edwards & Corbett at OG while Hudson eats up interior Defensive linemen , then Akers picking his way thru the opposition, while Stafford unleashes his arsenal to our very complementary group of receivers. I pity the fools lining up against us. jmo.

Rodney Hudson traded to Arizona

In the NFL, there are surprising releases, and then there are downright stunners. The Raiders’ decision to cut three-time Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson absolutely falls under the latter category.
By releasing Hudson, the Raiders take on $15.6 million in dead money, which is actually $2 million more than his cap hit ($13.6 million) was going to be for the 2021 season. They could designate him a post-June 1 cut to save some money this year, but either way, this is one of the most shocking moves of the offseason.
It’s also a move that could greatly benefit the Rams, who just happen to be in the market for a starting center. Austin Blythe is a pending free agent and while he’s a solid player, he’s not close to the player that Hudson is.
According to Pro Football Focus, Hudson has allowed just three sacks on 3,445 pass-blocking snaps since 2015. For comparison, Blythe allowed four sacks in 2020 alone. Hudson’s pass-blocking grade of 93.6 is the highest of any center since 2015, too.

Hudson, 31, is on the older side for an offensive lineman, but his age shouldn’t deter the Rams from signing him. He was a Pro Bowler in 2016, 2017 and 2019, and has missed a total of four games since 2013. Hudson is arguably the best center in football and someone who can change the outlook of an offensive line in a hurry.
The Rams already have a handful of quality starters at guard and tackle, but center was the weak link for them in 2020. Hudson would be an upgrade over Blythe, even if he would cost significantly more.
On his last contract, Hudson was making $11.25 million per year; it was a three-year, $33.75 million deal with the Raiders. He was the second-highest paid center in football, and there’s little reason to believe his next team won’t give him at least $9 million per year.
The Rams should be among those calling the veteran’s agent in an attempt to lure him to Los Angeles. It would give him a shot to win a Super Bowl, as well as the chance to play on an offense that features Matthew Stafford, Cam Akers, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp.
The Rams are limited with how much money they can spend, but after restructuring contracts and creating a boatload of cap space, Hudson is a player worth going after.
And as always with players who are released, he won’t count toward the compensatory pick formula.

Influential Quotes

Random Off Topic, got home a few minutes ago from work. Watching my normal podcast and a light bulb went off. This is my own personal quote I just thought of. Yet this is a new, fresh topic for ALL to contribute.

"If you always eat and drink clean, you will always feel clean and always shit clean."- Me

Gut feeling

I think Golladay being top WR on board from start, means something is up. Somebody would have signed him already like a Jacksonville as that was a better fit long term for Lawrence than Jones.

I got a feeling he wants to play with Stafford and we are trying to either reduce more salary or working on a trade to make room.

He should have signed right away otherwise IMO.

Does PFT hold a grudge against the Rams or are they just that dumb?

I just wasted 5 minutes watching PFT Rams video.

First Florio explains how the Rams wasted money by signing Williams to a first round tender ($4.77M).
This was followed by Simms saying that Ebukam signing was really good by 49ers ($6M/year).

Obviously they don't watch the Rams. In what world is Ebukam worth more $$ than DW, and more above that 49ers smart, Rams dumb.

I don't think that a single Rams fan would have chosen retaining Ebukam over Williams. Even if Williams was much more expensive.

Just had to rant.

I’ve read some posters on other boards now predicting an O heavy Rams draft...

Some think that Floyd solves most D needs and that McVay is gonna go hard on O draft picks.

Ummmmm...

I’m not at all sure about that.

I still see big investments coming for this Morris D.

Weak OLB (a must have)
CB (might not be able to sign DW in ‘22)
ILB (has needed upgrading for several years)

And those are just the biggies which would require at least 3 of our few picks and/or FA (including scarce cap dollars).

On O we do have at least one crying need at Center. I’d prefer a FA vet, if possible. But if he’s a short timer Sully type then a high draft pick used for C is likely.

No shortage of wants on O, either. Beyond Center, most might be described as development/depth investments.

LOT
TE
WR (vertical)
RB (depth)

So I guess I’m saying I see 2 things.

1. Looks like a fairly even draft/FA focus between O and D despite the DW tender and the Floyd signing.

2. Once again, Snead has to excell in second tier FA, late picks, and UDFA. No pressure. Lol.

What 5 movies exemplify the 80s?

I am a child of the 80s. I graduated high school in 1985, and college in 1989. Today, the 80s has become fodder for retro/nostalgic TV and movies (Stranger Things, The Goldbergs, The Wedding Singer, etc.). But, for a true feel for the 80s, I think you have to see some of the iconic movies that came out in that decade. So, my question is, if you were going to direct someone to watch 5 movies to get a feel for the 80s, what movies would you select? I had about a dozen contenders, but here are the five I settled on (in no particular order):

The Breakfast Club
The Karate Kid
Back to the Future
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Wall Street

Some that didn't make the cut: Sixteen Candles, Say Anything, Die Hard, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Top Gun, Footloose, When Harry Met Sally and Big.

Not so fast, Buffalo

Maybe Belichek isn’t washed up without Brady. Cam is at least serviceable, the defense is going to be stout and the receivers can at least run nfl routes. Can the offense give the defense time to rest though, as bad as Philly was they couldn’t wait to be rid of agholor. This offense doesn’t look explosive but they won’t beat themselves.

In Memorium...

I remember in my 20's I would probably stop reading this post right after the old guy writing it started talking about the good old days. It's one of those truths that is unpopular with those in the prime of their lives because it's not happening to them, they think. I remember when I was in my thirties, my Dad responded to my comment that "why do they ascribe a cause of death when someone old dies? Their body wore out and that's really why they died...not a heart attack or cancer or...you pick the cause." My Dad grew serious suddenly and said, "You'll regret those comments later in life."

Well, I wasn't wrong back then exactly, but he wasn't wrong either. I watch YouTube a lot and you know the AI pegs me for my age and interests. Strange history, videos of the the long ago Edwardians. Strange habits of death family photo portraits (the living posing with a a recently dead child, parent, etc...). The AI knows my approximate age and "In Memorium 2020 (different years)" shows up in my recommendeds. Different famous people who died during the year who you had forgotten about. It doesn't always have to be the old and sick, but also suicides and accidental deaths. Often the pictures are of them when you last saw their image in healthier days. For many, my first thought was "they were not that old!" Then you start doing the math and realize that most of them were at least a decade older than you and you're closing in on 60.

I remember joking about the Rolling Stones for the "Tattoo You" tour in 1981, being so old that they must use walkers to get on stage. I think Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are still alive (wtf!). But then Eddie Van Halen dies and all you remember is the young guy shredding a guitar solo in "Hot for Teacher," in the 80's. Or that the members of ZZ Top looked old and cool in the 80's....what about now? Tanya Roberts died this year and I hadn't thought about her in years and she died in her 60's. It's sad when you see a person who died and think, *whelp, I beat them in the age count. lol.

Of course it makes you consider your own mortality as well as those you love. I'm a geneologist and no @Merlin this has nothing to do with old rocks! When I started, I couldn't tell you who my paternal greatgrandfather was and my Dad didn't even know who he was when I asked him. Dad did give me this but he had no idea whose it was....
Denson's Orchestra.jpg

I discovered after getting my grandfather's birth certificate that his father died before he was born. I've been reasearching my family tree for 20 years and I learned that Great Gramps died of spinal meningitus and never knew that he would have a son. I have since learned so much about him and so many others, but all was lost from family memory. When the people who knew the dead, die, they were lost forever and that was always so sad for me to think about. Like an old graveyard is sad when you know that no one comes to their headstones anymore, because everyone is gone that knew them. Or when you look for a headstone and can't find it because part of the cemetery is overgrown with brush and trees and you can see aged limestone, half covered in dirt in the midst of the brush. When I discover long lost names of family, it's like finding a treasure nugget. Finding a picture is even better! All of my research is now digitized and stored on Ancestry.com. Old geneologists used to have boxes of documents and pictures gathered for years. When they died, family members shrugged their shoulders and often tossed it and all was lost because it meant nothing to them.

I never mentioned that the card above was my great grandfather's. Through old newspaper stories, I learned that he was a gifted singer and pianist and briefly had his own orchestra. He thought he would live forever, I suppose, and had this business card made.

For the few of you still reading,( ya bunch of old codgers) remember to take a moment and just be. Practice living in the moment and raise a glass to Dave51 and ThorDaddy this weekend, In Memorium.
