Tutu Atwell to return some punts in preseason debut vs. Chargers

Fans have been anxiously awaiting the chance to see exactly what the Rams got in rookie receiver Tutu Atwell, who they selected in the second round of the draft this year. He missed the start of camp due to COVID-19 but returned in time for the team’s joint practice against the Cowboys.

He’ll be on the field Saturday night against the Chargers in the Rams’ preseason opener, though, which will be the first real look at the rookie speedster for fans and coaches. He’ll not only get opportunities on offense, but he’ll also get the chance to return some punts.

Sean McVay told reporters Thursday what he’s looking to see from Atwell against the Chargers.

“Just continued growth. Just understanding what’s being asked of him from the receiver position within the framework of whether it’s the run game, the pass game,” he said. “He’s doing a good job. I like the progression. (WRs coach) Eric Yarber always does a great job with those receivers. If he gets the ball in his hands, want to see him be able to make some plays and then he’ll get an opportunity to catch some punts as well.”

Atwell seems to be among the favorites to start the season as the Rams’ punt returner, but he’ll face some competition from others such as Landen Akers, Jeremiah Haydel and possibly Otis Anderson.

We don’t have much clarity on how that battle is going, but Saturday’s preseason opener will tell us a lot about the pecking order.

The First Preseason Play I Watched...Speed to Burn. Can't Wait to See Rams Added Speed!

I just happened to flip to the local Eagles game last night right before this play. Quez Watkins has been a star at Eagles camp after not much production in 2020 as a rookie. He ran the 40 in 4.35 at the combine. Just a reminder of how quickly the Rams newly acquired speed could affect the offense. Having deep threads and a strong-armed quarterback will also open the running game as defenses will have to play the safeties back which opens the box. (Per D Farr) Henderson may not have the great long speed but, he has one of the fasted 10 and 20-yard splits of any player in the league. It is worth it to click the link.

Offense
4.35 DeShaun Jackson ran the same time in 2008 but, reportedly is still fast.
4.32 Tutu Atwell was reported to have run a 4.27 at some point in time.
4.38 Jake Funk He tested well at his pro day, running a 4.38 40-yard dash and 38 inches in the vertical.
4.39 Jacob Harris at 6'5" over 220 Lbs TE/WR? has been impressive as a rookie already.
???? Van Jefferson didn't run a 40 because of injury but, was clocked at high speeds at the SR. Bowl.

Defense
4.39 Robert Rochell brings speed to the DB room. Also 43" Vertical Jump.
4.38 Tyler Hall just signed CB out of Wyoming. He is 5'8" but has timed as low as 4.38 in the 40.

It's fun to think about the possibilities!

What a mess. Got a nephew out there and I am not happy at all with how this has been handled. Way I see it is if you want to get us out of there for political reasons then you get your troops out and don't look back. What will be will be. But now I'm hearing some interesting shit from friends and I suspect we're going to be expending some energy to further support that limp dick regime we put into power.

Fireworks ahead IMO. And this is not a partisan political post btw so if your mind is going there stop. This is just a damn shame of a situation. Another situation where we set up a lame duck regime that doesn't have the balls to hold territory and in our absence will only serve to drain more of our resources.

Preseason Week One (Lesser) Games

Anyone else planning on catching any non-Rams games?

Cheatriots/WTF was a snorefest, had to fast forward through a lot of that shit just watched just to get a look at Mack. Gonna make sure I watch Chicago, they're my priority for the weekend.

Thinking about Bills/Lions just out of curiosity to see how that line and run game look around Jared. I know it's preseason but it's football dammit. :clinkingbeer:

PREGAME PREGAME THREAD - Rams vs Chargers PREDICTIONS

Ok dudes let's play a game... You can pick ONE player who is going to light it up the most on Saturday night. Winner gets all expenses paid photos of @Loyal in his tighty-whiteys. Keep in mind that McVay is probably gonna be a dickhead and not play a bunch of guys we want to see.

I'm gonna go with Skowronek. Why? Well because I don't trust that Tutu will get to play and because the guy has worked his ass off so far in camp by all reports. Predicting it now: Benny Skow will put up 80+ yards in this one and get himself a preseason game ball and a fan call that sounds like boos. :laugh2:

Where we at?

Just thought I'd put down where I think the Rams are at after the public portion of training camp. I'm really looking forward to this season!

QBs: Stafford will be better than Goff, it's a question of by how much. I'm also curious as to if there are many plays/situations that Stafford isn't as good as Goff in this offense. I think Goff was good when play calls lined up perfectly with the defense and he could drop back, plant and deliver a timing throw. Just complete faith in the system. Will Stafford have the same faith? Or will he have more faith in his ability to work out of structure?
Wolford... I don't get why anyone would be down on the kid. I like him a lot for a lot of reasons. The season wouldn't end on an injury to Stafford, imo.

RBs: Probably my biggest area of concern. No Brown or Akers compared to last year and three guys who have never had a carry. It's the experience much more than the ability and I'm a little worried. Henderson is a true RB1 talent, imo.. but I'd never count on him for a true RB1 workload. We'll see!

WRs: WHAT A GROUP. Just not much needed to be said... talent, depth, explosiveness, reliability. Damn good.

TEs: Really, really interesting area to watch. I know a lot has been made of Hopkins' situation... one thing I heard from Jourdan was that he had obviously gained weight and was really working on his blocking. This makes me think he's a true backup #1 TE. Mundt seems more of a hybrid between a move guy and an inline... and Harris is a fascinating move TE. I just wonder what happens to that long frame when the hitting starts. I think there's a real possibility they carry 4 TEs and 5WRs. It would be a shame to lose Trishton.. but that's how I'm seeing it at the moment.

Oline: I'm choosing to be optimistic. I think, based on what I've read/heard, that Brian Allen is simply outperforming expectations. People who bomb him for 19, I think, don't give enough thought to the impact of a then, undersized center, between an undersized guard and a finesse tackle playing out of position at guard. He's still undersized, but has beefed up, by all accounts. Jourdan Rodrigue says he's been battling and looks great. That's good enough for me. Evans can be decent.. but Corbett was a plus guard, imo. This time around... a bigger Allen will be surrounded by a couple of legit NFL Guards... that should help. I'm comfortable with Whit and Hav.

Dline: AD is the best. Ever. SJD was very good against the run last year.. and committed to his pass rushing this offseason. I expect some improvement. He improved tremendously from year one to two, so I have some faith in him. I think Robinson will be solid.. not Brockers solid.. but solid. I really hope B Brown can get some preseason reps in... that's a BIG BOY. Gaines is a solid fireplug. It gets interesting after those guys... E Brown... Banks.. some of the other UDFA types. We'll see!

Edge: Floyd.. very, very solid and dependable. Maybe won't get as many sacks as last year.. but will get at least 8. Other side... Hollins and Obo and hopes and prayers. Lewis... I get why they picked him, but it don't look great.

ILBs: A position of uncertainty last season seems to be, at worst, solid.. with potential.

DBs: Excellent, excellent group of talent. Just can't wait to watch.

Biggest Q on D is what Rah Morris does with them. Can the defensive backfield be as innovative and special as last year? That'll be tough.

9 key takeaways from Rams training camp

9 key takeaways from Rams training camp

913343c9e6a8400198901d7d653b8d38.jpg

The regular season is still about a month away for the Los Angeles Rams, but they took the next step in the offseason by finishing training camp on Tuesday. They’ve departed UC Irvine and gone back to their headquarters in Thousand Oaks, preparing for their three preseason games and eventually the Bears in Week 1.
Sean McVay said the team will remain in training camp mode and still plans to keep the level of competition high in the upcoming practices, but camp is officially in the books.

Here are nine things we learned from the Rams’ 10 practices of training camp.

1
DeSean Jackson has still got it

5de4add4161a4221aac8178a04c1d80b.jpg

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
It’s only August and Jackson hasn’t played a single game with the Rams yet, but it’s hard not to get excited about his potential in this offense now that he’s reunited with Sean McVay. He’s caught several deep passes from Matthew Stafford, including ones where he absolutely blew by the entire defense and found himself with nothing but green grass around.
Whether he’s truly the No. 3 receiver or a situational receiver, Jackson is going to have an impact this season after shining in camp. It’s just a matter of staying healthy and capitalizing on the opportunities when they’re presented.

2
The interior offensive line is a big question mark

USATSI_16238587.jpg

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports
So much for Austin Corbett moving from right guard to center, huh? That seemed like the plan all offseason after the Rams opted not to add a center in the draft, but things changed in the final days of training camp when Brian Allen took over for Corbett.
McVay said Allen would be the Rams’ starting center right now, with Corbett remaining at right guard. Whether that’s good news or bad is still to be determined, but it’s hard to feel overly confident in Allen as a starter unless he’s improved dramatically from the last time he played in 2019.
It’s unclear if Corbett or Bobby Evans was the weak link up front, but one of them must have disappointed McVay enough to change his mind about the center-right guard combo.

3
Jordan Fuller will likely assume the role of John Johnson

c39dc01d75204d3bb0878feb80d51ee3.jpg

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
Fuller was a surprise starter as a sixth-round rookie last year and there’s absolutely no question that he’s going to maintain his spot in the secondary this season. If anything, his role is going to be even larger than it was in 2020.
Fuller wore the green dot in practice as the defensive signal caller, aligning his teammates and relaying the calls from Raheem Morris to the rest of the group. That’s the job Johnson had last season and Fuller has begun making a seamless transition to that leadership role. He’s smart, rangy and a good tackler, making him a similar player to Johnson – which is obviously a compliment for the second-year safety.

4
Matthew Stafford has lived up to the hype

734d0cff3489445898c20f97023a2acc.jpg

(AP Photo/John McCoy)
Simply by being traded from the Lions to the Rams, Stafford’s stock has skyrocketed, going from being viewed as a decent quarterback to someone who can legitimately win NFL MVP. His performance in training camp has only solidified that narrative, living up to all of the expectations that fans and the Rams have had up to this point.
He’s made no-look passes, drawn rave reviews from Jalen Ramsey for his ball placement and taken shots down the field, consistently hitting Jackson for big plays. McVay couldn’t be more impressed with his new quarterback, a great sign for the upcoming season.

5
The Rams like their current group of running backs

USATSI_16158342.jpg

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
McVay said at the start of camp that he liked who the Rams had at running back behind Cam Akers, who suffered a torn Achilles before camp even began. The team didn’t add a single running back in the last few weeks, a sign that McVay wasn’t exaggerating with the confidence he had in Darrell Henderson Jr., Xavier Jones and Jake Funk.
Jones seems to be the favorite to back up Henderson, with both players making plays in practice this summer. Funk has also impressed his coaches and been lauded as a smart rookie, making him a near-lock to make the 53-man roster. The Rams could still add a running back, but camp did nothing to change McVay’s mind about the current corps.

6
The nickel role remains up for grabs

622e049268864d68ada940729d9ada36.jpg

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
David Long Jr. is still the likeliest player to secure the No. 3 cornerback job, but Terrell Burgess stood out for all the right reasons in camp, while Kareem Orr and Donte Deayon also performed well in practice.
Long hasn’t yet locked up the nickel role, even if he is the top candidate for the job. It’ll be fascinating to watch who plays where and how much in the preseason as the Rams attempt to sort out their cornerback group. Robert Rochell’s wrist surgery gives Long an even clearer path to the CB3 spot, but no one should be counted out right now.

7
We’re gaining some clarity at inside linebacker

ce7c53adf5ca4ea79affe446e5dc9f54.jpg

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)
Coming into training camp, it was far from clear which players would be the starting linebackers. Now leaving camp, we have a good idea of at least one starter after Kenny Young emerged and stepped up in a big way this summer.
We still don’t know who will start next to him or how the snap counts will shake out, but Young has a good grasp of one starting spot for now. That’s great news for the Rams, who had arguably the worst linebacker unit in the NFL last season.
Now if Travin Howard or Ernest Jones can keep up their promising trajectory, Los Angeles will be in decent hands at this position.

8
Rookies were relatively quiet at UC Irvine

e1b4439d75c544a2b00ade3defd22360.jpg

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)
Tutu Atwell began camp on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Jacob Harris missed time early on with a minor injury, Bobby Brown III injured his thumb and underwent surgery, while Robert Rochell also had a procedure done to fix his banged-up wrist.
Needless to say, it wasn’t the most productive or encouraging camp for the Rams’ rookies. Atwell did make some plays when he returned and Ernest Jones played consistently at linebacker, but for the most part, the team’s first-year players were quiet in Irvine. Thankfully, there’s still the preseason for them to gain experience.

9
Donald and Ramsey are still Donald and Ramsey

USATSI_15299707.jpg

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Also, water is wet, the sun sets in the west and the sky is blue.
But in all seriousness, the Rams’ two stud defenders didn’t miss a beat in camp. Ramsey was a difficult matchup for every receiver he covered, while Donald was the game-wrecker he’s always been.
As long as these two stay healthy and play the way they did last season, Los Angeles will have a top-10 defense, if not a top-five unit again. The combination of Donald’s pass rushing and Ramsey’s sticky coverage makes playing quarterback against the Rams incredibly difficult.

Stock up, stock down from Rams training camp: Allen and Jackson rising, Lewis falling

Stock up, stock down from Rams training camp: Allen and Jackson rising, Lewis falling

August 11, 2021 8:28 am PT

The Rams wrapped up training camp at UC Irvine on Tuesday afternoon, their 10th and final practice on campus. They now head back to Thousand Oaks as they prepare for their first preseason game, which is on Saturday against the Chargers.
There’s still time to sort out position battles and figure out who on the roster bubble will wind up making the team, but camp helped provide a lot of clarity on the Rams’ current collection of players.

Here’s a stock report from camp, highlighting those who are rising and pointing out players who are heading in the wrong direction.

1
Stock up: C Brian Allen

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)
In the final two days of camp, Allen managed to go from clear backup to current starter at center. He took first-team reps on Monday and Tuesday before Sean McVay told reporters at the end of camp that he would be the team’s starting center over Austin Corbett if they were to play a game right now.
McVay even went as far as to say he was one of the Rams’ standouts in camp. Now healthy again, Allen seems poised to start in Week 1.

2
Stock down: OLB Terrell Lewis

07e73e1473624be5bac558e3a887b9db.jpg

(AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)
Lewis just can’t seem to stay healthy. He was held out of practice this week after his knee started acting up again, as McVay described it. The second-year pass rusher didn’t have his name called often during camp and is clearly behind Justin Hollins opposite Leonard Floyd at outside linebacker. It seems he’s destined for a similar role as he had last season, coming into the game situationally as a pass rusher.

3
Stock up: WR DeSean Jackson

fbe50df7e4e04eecab8c86375e8a5ea1.jpg

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)
There were plenty of doubters and skeptics when the Rams signed Jackson to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million this offseason, but he’s looked fantastic in camp. Seemingly every day he’s making catches deep down the field for touchdowns, proving he still has that top-end speed and can threaten defenses. Expect him to play a big role on offense this season, assuming he’s able to stay healthy.

4
Stock down: TE Brycen Hopkins

6d70e645a62d41e389103075f1b390a6.jpg

(AP Photo/Kelvin Kuo)
The Rams have shared plenty of highlights of Tyler Higbee and Jacob Harris making plays, and we know Johnny Mundt has been getting reps with the second team, looking like the No. 2 tight end. But Hopkins had a very quiet camp, similar to the way his rookie year went. He’s listed as the third tight end on the depth chart, but it’s hard to see him having much of a role this season, especially if Harris keeps rising the way he has.

5
Stock up: ILB Kenny Young

USATSI_16478188.jpg

John McCoy-USA TODAY Sports
Young has emerged as a likely starter for the Rams at inside linebacker, which is a pleasant surprise. They need a steady player at that position after cycling through guys last season, and Young has previous experience as a starter with the Ravens. He still has to earn the starting spot and it remains to be seen who will be the Rams’ third-down linebacker in nickel and dime packages, but Young really stepped up in camp.

6
Stock down: RG Bobby Evans

ac738e7769ec4efcb7ece807012ed241.jpg

(AP Photo/Kyusung Gong)
McVay has said glowing things about Allen and Corbett, clearly stating that if Allen starts at center, Corbett will be the right guard. He mentioned that Evans is a guy they have confidence in to come in and play if needed, but he hasn’t earned a starting job on the offensive line. In fact, it might be Evans’ play that has led the Rams to move Corbett to right guard and bumping Allen up to the starting role. Evans is a good player, but he still has room to improve as a guard.

7
Stock up: RB Xavier Jones

USATSI_16478265.jpg

John McCoy-USA TODAY Sports
McVay said Tuesday that he thinks Jones is “going to carve out a role for himself” and someone the Rams are “expecting to count on throughout the season.” That’s high praise for the second-year back, and it seems he’s poised to emerge as Darrell Henderson Jr.’s backup. McVay added that Jones is aware and willing in pass protection, a crucial part of playing the position, especially if he’s going to be a third-down back for the Rams. Jake Funk has also done a nice job and impressed McVay, but Jones has received a lot of high marks from the coach.

8
Stock down: ILB Christian Rozeboom

e1e639351a97472e893074439cc07d48.jpg

(AP Photo/Andy Clayton- King)
Rozeboom is an intriguing player but one who’s fallen behind a bit at outside linebacker. Ernest Jones had a good camp, as did Young and Travin Howard. Micah Kiser and Troy Reeder don’t seem to be going anywhere, either, making Rozeboom the sixth linebacker. That’s probably not enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, unless he can vault Kiser, Reeder or Howard in the preseason. He could be destined for another year on the practice squad if he doesn’t make the 53-man team.

Having been on the other end of this as Rams fans from the 2001 Spygate scandal, how do you all really feel about cheating? In the Olympics, athletes who get caught doping or cheating get their medals stripped & handed to the next runner up. I feel this protects the integrity of Olympic sports. Lance Armstrong got ALL his Tour wins vacated too -- being someone who used to look up to him, I hate it, but it's the right thing to do. USC under Pete Carroll also comes to mind.

But, when the Patsies were dinged by the NFL for what seemed like a slap on the wrist, do you feel like that helped us fans trust the NFL? or did you lose trust in it? Loaded question, sorry. Or, how about the 2017 Astros who were caught cheating in the WS? MLB slapped them on the wrist too. In a close 4-3 win over the (ahem) LA Dodgers, don't you think their cheating made a difference in their win?

Astros fans, and Pasty fans, would tell you to quit yer cryin', everyone cheats, etc., etc. But I know for a fact that many fans have left both the NFL and MLB for it's loss of integrity. Those slaps on the wrists were slaps in our faces. Don't these teams play for the fans anyway? or, do they just not care that much about us anymore because it's all about the TV sponsorship $$$ now? I guess they found out when stadiums were empty last year. Do sports rules even matter anymore, or is it all just for show? I guess it's possible, if you can control everything the TV audiences see.

If I were the 'stros or the 'pats, I would voluntarily vacate my wins & hand my trophy to the Dodgers / Rams, because no matter what, it will never erase the stain from my victory. So what if new fans are born everyday, who won't remember what they did; so what if some fans will look the other way, just because they want some entertainment? or because they're fans of the winner (who happens to be owned by a powerful team owner)? Their selfishness harms the entire league. So I guess you all know where I stand on this lol, not just because I'm a jilted Rams fan, but because I care about the sports I watch -- I hate feeling like I'm watching something fake. If I wanted to watch a fake sport I'd watch "pro" wrestling.
