Justin Lawler's preseason performance vs. Chargers an emotional moment for him

Justin Lawler's preseason performance vs. Chargers an emotional moment for him

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – For many Rams players, last Saturday's preseason game against the Chargers represented their first live action in more than a year.

Outside linebacker Justin Lawler had the longest wait of all.

Preseason foot injuries have forced him to miss the each of the last two seasons, which meant that up until Saturday, he had not appeared in a game for the Rams since Super Bowl LVIII in February 2019. So when he let out a roar or celebrated in some fashion after each of his five tackles and two QB hits Saturday night, it carried extra meaning.

"I've been through a long road with the injuries," Lawler said postgame. "My foot breaking three times. (Head coach) Sean (McVay) and (general manager) Les (Snead), gracious enough this offseason to bring me back. Couldn't be more grateful. I mean, just brings me to tears, man. Doing what I love to do after what I've gone through, it's a big deal for me and my family. And it's just good to be out and playing football. I love playing football. And that's that's what I enjoy doing. So grateful."

Starting opposite rookie Chris Garrett at edge, Lawler got off to a fast start. On the eighth play of the game, he teamed up with safety JuJu Hughes to stop Chargers running back Justin Jackson for no gain on 2nd and short. Later in the same series, he pressured quarterback Chase Daniels into an incompletion, a play that contributed to the Chargers settling for a field goal.

At the end of the first quarter, Lawler pressured Daniel again into an incompletion, then made a tackle for a 3-yard loss against running back Joshua Kelley that forced the Chargers to punt.

"My college coach used to say, 'It's a high you can't buy,'" Lawler said, when asked about feeling the momentum build with each play stacking. "That's probably a common phrase, but it's really fun. I mean, it's just, you work a lot, you work hard and you practice for three hours, 17 weeks, with an opportunity to maybe get some more time, so it's just fun. You go out and enjoy it with your teammates. And that's what it's all about – having a team around you, having a family around you, and just going out and playing ball, having fun."

Overall, his pair of QB hits led the Rams' defense, while his five tackles tied with safety J.R. Reed for third-most among Rams defensive players in Saturday's contest.

Afterward, he recalled Snead bringing him into his office to check on him and see how he was doing mentally after his second injury. Lawler also thought of the support shown by his wife, Denver Lawler.

"Thankfully, I've always been stable mentally through my injuries," Lawler said. "God has led me through a lot, and I always have faith in him. My wife, she's an unbelievable support for me. Sorry."

Lawler paused to collect himself.

"When you bring up my wife, that's..." he said, his voice trailing off.

He confirmed his wife was in attendance at Saturday night's game. Playing the way he did with her there was "good" and "special," he said.

"She does a lot," Lawler said. "She takes care of our kids while I'm able to do what I do and train and stuff."

Judging by the outpouring of support on social media, he made his family proud.

"It was one of those deals where he was making his presence felt," McVay said postgame. "I thought there were a couple of holding calls he could have drawn as well, early on in the game. But it was great to have Justin Lawler out there for us. He's had some unfortunate injuries over the last couple of years. You definitely felt his presence. I thought he did a nice job."

20 Random Preseason Thoughts

1. Time for the 2021 season's first data dump!

2. It was cool to see the Rams on the field in SoFi again, this time with fans in the stands.

3. The blue on blue uniforms, much like many of the players on the field on Saturday, should not be seen in the regular season.

4. There were a few players who caught my eye. Justin Lawler was one. He certainly looked like a veteran among a lot of inexperienced players. Given the depth chart on the edge, he could make the team.

5. Tutu Atwell had a couple of plays that demonstrated that extra gear. He'll have to battle Raymond Calais, though, for that punt return role.

6. Jacob Harris' physical talent was very evident. With Gerald Everett gone, I think he could see a lot of playing time (particularly in the Red Zone).

7. The backup OL did not have a good game. That's not overly concerning, as the only potential starter who was out there was Bobby Evans (who seems to be dropping on the depth chart).

8. Because the OL was ineffective, I can't say that I gleaned much information about our RBs behind Darrel Henderson.

9. Corey Bojorquez has a leg, but I still think Johnny Hekker will keep his job. Perhaps we can turn CB into a 6th or 7th round draft pick?

10. Two others who caught my eye were Ernest Jones and J.R. Reed.

11. Was it me, or were the Chargers blitzing a lot for first preseason game?

12. A lot of hype regarding the rookie QBs, some of which is pretty silly.

13. For example, Trey Lance threw a very nice pass for an 80 yard TD, and the web erupted. His total stat line: 4-14, 128 yards... and he took 4 sacks.

14. Justin Fields is also getting a lot of hype today. I still think we'll see Andy Dalton under center in Week 1 when we face the Bears.

15. It really amazes me that there are betting lines on preseason games. They're glorified practices at this point.

16. I think the starting OL needs to get some August reps. Not sure McVay agrees.

17. Malcolm Brown is a guy I may regret losing.

18. Nobody on the waiver wire/unsigned FA list really intrigues me right now, but that could change as cutdowns begin.

19. I have a new 75 inch TV and a very comfortable new sofa. If NFL stadiums want my $, they're going to have to step up their game, because my living room is tough to beat!

20. Man, I'm glad football is back!

Do any of you do forging, casting, or have any helpful guidance?

One of my favorite things about this website outside of being here to BS with other Ram fans is reading the know you guys personally, your interests, and life experiences.

I have recently been off on a one with videos regarding forging, casting, precious metals, utilizing scrap and mining. Do any of you have any type of experience or information regarding info? Where to get professional forges and processes etc?

Watch: A huge fight broke out among fans at Rams-Chargers game

Fans were finally allowed to attend a game at SoFi Stadium for the first time on Saturday night as the Rams took on the Chargers in Week 1 of the preseason, and things got a little bit too heated in the stands among a group of fans. A huge fight broke out in what appears to be the lower level as a handful of guys unloaded a flurry of punches on a fan.

It left the fan’s face bloodied, as can be seen in the photo above.

Two other fans were also going at it nearby before the two fights spilled into each other.

It took security a surprisingly long time to come over, with nearly a minute and a half passing before someone arrived. It’s unclear what started the fight.

SO FI Parking

* PARKING*
So, had a group of 10 with us last night at the game. We decided to go with one of the parking structures that are linked to the So Fi stadium website.
The company is LAZ Go Parking.
It costs around $42 a parking spot and they offer a shuttle service to the stadium for another $8 per person. The shuttle cost takes you both to and from the stadium. Both trips included in the cost.
We bought the parking tickets a month ago.

We arrived at the parking structure around 6 pm. They let us in. We drive all the way to the top. All spaces are taken.
We follow a handful of cars to the exit. (There are about 10 cars in the lot, all without places to park).
At the exit, an employee points us to an overflow lot next to it.
We finally get parked.

Now we walk across the street and get in a huge line for the shuttles. They are full size busses. They are advertised to arrive every 15 minutes.
Nope.
1 shuttle finally shows up. They cram all the people they can and head to the stadium.
With the line in front of us, we think we can make it into the next shuttle.
So we wait.
About 25 minutes later we decide to just walk.
The walk is only about 1 - 1.5 miles.
It was the right decision, because I'm sure we beat the next shuttle to the stadium.

As we walk by the Forum, we realize they have their stadium parking lot open for parking.
This is completely separate from So Fi and isn't listed on SoFi's website.

Most already know, but the Forum is adjacent to Sofi.

I highly recommend staying away from LAZ GO and parking at the Forum if you can't get stadium Parking.

*GETTING INTO THE STADIUM*
They were in no hurry getting people in. The lines were slow going. They were very particular about what you can carry in.
If you have a bag that is too big and isn't clear, they will let you rent a locker, so you don't have to trek back to your truck.
Small women's clutch bags were aloud. All others had to be clear plastic.

*Covid*
The website claims that you have to have been vaccinated or pass a covid test within 72 hours of game time.
It also says that you have to "verbally " attest that you meet those requirement.
They don't check or ask when entering.

Masks were required to enter and walk around. You are aloud to remove them once you get to your seat.
These rules were very loosely enforced. Many walked around without them.

*TAILGATING*
I'm not sure if the Forum allows tailgating. You'll have to check their website.

So Fi tailgating is only allowed in the PINK parking lot.
They have 2 sections.
One for oversized vehicles and one for normal vehicles.

All other SO FI lots don't allow tailgating.

* The Stadium*
Once you get in is beautiful.
We had seats in section 504. The very top/north section of the Stadium.
It is steep.
The vew of the field was still unobstructed.
That Occulous is amazing.

As far as temp inside the stadium goes. It was perfect.
I don't know if it was a slight breeze from the open sections of the canopy or if they had air circulating, but it worked well.

All in all we had a blast.

Rams-Chargers Recap: Winners and Losers

Rams-Chargers Recap: Winners and Losers

The Chargers defeated the Rams at Sofi Stadium, but there was plenty to be encouraged by

By JB Scott Aug 15, 2021
  • NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Chargers bested the Los Angeles Rams 13-6 in Saturday night’s preseason contest and the first game at SoFi Stadium in front of fans. Leading up to the game, Head Coach Sean McVay indicated around 35 players would not participate. With that said, only around 18 players that were on the field Saturday night will make the final 53 roster - others will have the opportunity to earn a spot on the practice squad.

  • There were some promising contributors in the battle for LA and others that did not perform up to expectations. Here are four winners from the first preseason contest against the Chargers, plus three players or positions that aren’t feeling as hot right now.

    Winners

    Justin Lawler, EDGE

A former 2018 seventh-round draft choice from SMU, Justin Lawler was the star of the evening and may have solidified his place on the Rams final 53-man roster. Lawler appeared in every game during his rookie season, though his role was mostly limited to special teams. Unfortunately, injuries kept him off the field during 2019 and 2020. It’s encouraging to see Lawler persevere and overcome injuries to become a preseason standout.

  • On just the first series of the game Lawler recorded multiple pressures and a hit on Chargers veteran quarterback Chase Daniel, one of these pressures forcing an incompletion on the goal line and a field goal attempt. On the second series the outside linebacker made a tackle for loss in the run game. All in all, it was an impressive night from the fourth year player who now projects to be the primary backup to EDGE Leonard Floyd.

  • Jacob Harris, TE
  • Rookie Jacob Harris showed flashes of promise and elite athletic ability during offseason activities and training camp, and it’s good to see this carryover to the preseason as well. At times, Harris seemed raw, fumbling after a long catch and run sequence and then being unable to stay in-bounds for what would have been a spectacular touchdown grab. It is not reasonable to expect Harris to be a staple of the 2021 Rams offense in his first year, but McVay can provide opportunities - either schematically or situationally - that are advantageous with the rookie’s unique skill set.

    Bryce Perkins, QB

Bryce Perkins’ rookie preseason campaign never took place due to COVID-19 restrictions, so this was the first time we’ve seen him live in a Rams uniform. The depth on the offensive line did not have a strong outing on Saturday night, but Perkins was better equipped to handle pressure and off-schedule plays than fellow backup Devlin “Duck” Hodges. Perkins finished 7 of 10 for 42 yards as a passer and recorded 4 attempts for 23 yards on the ground.

  • The second-year signal caller figures to split playing time with Hodges for the remaining two preseason games, so the pecking order could easily change; however, it is fair to question whether the Rams will be able to stash Perkins on the practice squad this season or if he must be carried on the 53-man roster. One benefit of Perkins sticking around is that he can run the scout team and help the first team defense prepare for mobile quarterbacks.

    Kick/Punt Returner

In what may have been the most positive development of the evening, the Rams seem to be improving in the kick/punt return game.

  • Rookie Tutu Atwell earned the first opportunity to handle punts and ripped off a 20-yard return that was called back due to penalty. While this may or may not be notable normally, Atwell looked faster than anyone else on the field at times. The speedster also caught 2 passes for 21 yards, with the longest reception being a 19-yard catch and run.

  • Running back Raymond Calais handled kick return duties at times as a rookie, but has added punt returns to his repertoire this season. Calais returned a punt for 46-yards and kickoff for 29-yards, flashing impressive speed and vision on both returns. The second-year runner also had a share of carries on offense, but was unable to separate himself much.

    Losers

    Offensive Line Depth

The offensive line seemed to be dominated by the Chargers defensive front for most of the night, especially in the running game. An important note in this is that backup left tackle Joseph Noteboom was on the sidelines with the starters and other key players. Another exception is that second-year right tackle Tremayne Anchrum seemed to play well, so really the concern lies on the interior of the OL.

  • LA’s quarterbacks were consistently under duress, though Perkins was able to navigate the pressure and make plays with his legs. Hodges, a more traditional pocket passer, was a sitting “duck” for most of the night.

  • The woes on the offensive line also prevented a real look at any of the reserve running backs battling for playing time behind lead back Darrell Henderson. Xavier Jones had 7 carries for 21 yards, Jake Funk 5 for 12 yards, and Calais 7 for 14 yards, an overall average of less than 2.5 yards per attempt.

    The Kickers

Starter Matt Gay, who was fairly reliable last season, missed an extra point that was moved back due to a false start penalty. Reserve kicker Austin MacGinnis also recorded a miss on a field goal attempt. While Gay’s miss isn’t overly concerning, it will be something to keep an eye on moving forward. Reports from training camp indicated both Gay and MacGinnis were consistently accurate during practice, so time will tell if this was really just an off-night.

    Ben Skowronek

Rookie seventh-rounder Ben Skowronek seemed to be trending towards a spot on the roster as a key special teams player and a possible situational receiver role. The Rams announced the rookie suffered a broken forearm during the game and will undergo surgery. It is not yet known how long Skowronek will be out.

Preseason game 1: O-line review

Hey all,

I went back and watched the O-line. A careful review shows some interesting things that is hard to notice while watching in real time.

I should note that the starters were as follows:

LT Jackson
LG Brewer
C Shelton
LG Evans
RT Anchrum

Somewhere around the 3rd quarter Shelton was replaced by Kolone and Evans was replaced by Meredith.

I'll give me grades along with a brief reason.

Jackson - C Had at least 3 missed blocks. Played more consistent as it went along.
Brewer -D Missed at least 5 blocks. Also lacks strength and ability to keep blocker engaged. May need to switch to center.
Shelton - C Missed a few blocks but played decent overall.
Evans - C- Started real strong. Then started missing blocks. Showed inability to sustain blocks even though his strength is good.
Anchrum - B Really impressed. The excellent feet, balance and technique really showed. Kick out is excellent. Had a strong showing in pass pro.
Meredith - A Really impressed. Excellent feet strength and lock. Shows starter quality. A few times Chargers #66 beat him to the backfield but from what I could tell this was Kolone's assignment both times.
Kolone - C Showed good strength and feet and blocking ability. Seems real raw in assignment though. From what I could tell he missed a few assignments that resulted in backfield blowups. My guess is he wasn't clear on assignment when #66 was looping over to his right side gap.

Overall I think Meredith has real potential.
Anchrum could feel in nicely if Havenstein goes down.
Kolone has potential but I want to see if he can clear up the assignment issues next game.
Evans was disappointing later in the game, too many years in to be whiffing on guys in the run game.

These grades don't take into consideration who these guys were lined up against.

Right now my plan B for the Brian Allen project (if it don't work out) is to slide in Meredith at RG and Corbett at center......at least through 1 preseason game.

Ben Skowronek sustains fractured forearm, to undergo surgery Monday

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Rams rookie wide receiver Ben Skowronek fractured his forearm in Saturday night's preseason game against the Chargers and will undergo surgery Monday, a team spokesperson said.

There is no timetable yet for Skowronek's return.

The Notre Dame product was chosen in the seventh round of this year's draft by the Rams after posting 29 receptions for 439 yards and five touchdowns across 11 games last year.

Crime Documentaries

I fucking love these things.

Just finished watching "Relentless" on Discovery+

Wow.

This is about a town not incredibly far from me. We have a store there where I work and I talk to them all the time. They know about the case. Some day the documentary is full of shit, some seem to agree completely with it. Very interesting. Lots of curve balls.

What are some great ones we need to watch?

John Wolford

Wolford will be a ERFA next year meaning the Rams will have him through 2022 but stand a chance of losing him after that. They need to think about grooming the next backup as a contingency. Wolford is a good QB but I question his ultimate ceiling. He's the kind of QB that can stick around for a career as a solid backup and perhaps at some point get his shot as a starter. A good team can win with John, but I'm not sure he's good enough to carry a poor or mediocre team. If he's smart he will make a career as McVay's backup QB, make decent money and maybe pick up a ring or two. Six years from now the Rams might be looking for a new starting QB, and who knows. He knows the system, he's got a good arm with good accuracy and he's fairly mobile and he will be 33 yo. On the other hand if Jared falters (which I don't expect) he can market himself to Holmes.

Don't get me wrong I really like Wolford and feel very good with him as the Rams backup QB. But gauging his ceiling is difficult. If he was 4"-5" taller people could see franchise potential in him. That said he's an inch taller than Drew Brees. Accuracy is something that is really hard to teach. Usually, all coaches can do is improve the mechanics and hope for the best. John is very much like some of the better short QBs in that he's shown good accuracy in his off-platform throws. Now for the first time he is paired with a QB with the expertise to really mentor John. Having Stafford in that QB room is going to pay big dividends for Wolford. He can learn from one of the best at how to read a defense.

McVay already likes Wolford. If John sticks around long enough IMO he has a shot at being the next Ram starter after Stafford. That said, Stafford's influence on John might increase his value to other teams. If McVay really likes Wolford he should lock him up with at least a 4 year deal in 2023. I think with mentoring from Stafford, Wolford would be in position to make that step to the next level.

Betsy Palmer Kinda Freaked Me Out

Sometimes I go down the YouTube rabbit hole. I was attracted to an old gameshow that I was too young to have ever watched, but the panelists were kind of funny. There was a very attractive blonde young lady named Betsy Palmer. She was so sweet and kind and I sorta fell in love with her public persona. She was in a broadway play in 1961, I believe, playing Peter Pan. She was so genuine and kind towards people in her past when they were "the secret."

I finally did a search on her and found that she was Jason Voorhees Momma on Friday the 13th! What a shocker and it felt as wrong as expecting a Disney cartoon movie and finding out it was hentai porn.....lol.

So have you ever been shocked by a star who seemed totally one way and then freakin' blew your mind later? Time and memory did me in as far as Betsy goes....

RB's we may want to look at...

Word up Rams brethren! I, like most of you, are obsessed with the Rams RB situation. So I've done a little research into potential veterans and roster cuts. While it's early and everything is speculative I imagine the Rams brain trust is doing this sort of analysis.

So here are three guys I'm thinking we should be looking at:

1. Le'veon Bell, FA - I heard in an interview with Jack Funk that Bell has been working out. I imagine he has tread on his tires and a chip on his shoulder. The only issue with him is we may not be able to fit him in under the salary cap, unless he does a monies deffered to 2022 type deal.

2. Jordan Howard, Philly

"Running back Jordan Howard had an explosive start to his NFL career. Drafted in the fifth round by the Chicago Bears in 2016, he was a rookie Pro Bowler and logged 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his first two years.
However, Howard fell below the 1,000-yard mark in 2018, was a role player with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019 and was a virtual non-factor with the Miami Dolphins last season before being cut. Howard rejoined the Eagles late in 2020 and is back this year to try to revitalize his career.
He has performed well in camp too.
"Honestly, he came back looking the best that I've ever seen him look," fellow back Boston Scott said, per Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
The problem is Howard faces a crowded backfield that also features Scott, starter Miles Sanders, rookie fifth-round pick Kenneth Gainwell and recent addition Kerryon Johnson. Sanders and Scott are established Eagles commodities, and Gainwell is a draftee. So Howard may be vying for the No. 4 role at best. And while his 2021 cap hit is only $990,000, none of the money is guaranteed.
If Johnson, a 2018 second-round pick of the Detroit Lions, becomes Philadelphia's preferred reclamation project, cutting Howard and saving nearly $1 million could be an easy decision."

3. Jalen Richard, Las Vegas

"Running back Jalen Richard has merely been a role player for the Las Vegas Raiders. However, fans can tell you that he's been an extremely valuable one over the years.
An undrafted free agent in 2016, Richard quickly established himself as one of the league's most reliable receiving backs. He logged 160 receptions in his first four years with the Raiders and racked up 2,550 yards from scrimmage during that span.
In 2018 and 2019, Richard provided quarterback ratings of 97.9 and 98.0 when targeted, respectively.
However, he was less of a factor in 2020, when he had career lows in receptions (19) and yards from scrimmage (261). Then, Las Vegas signed dual-threat back Kenyan Drake to a two-year, $11 million deal in free agency.
With Drake and Josh Jacobs leading the backfield, Richard was already likely battling for a roster spot. He's now also out indefinitely with a foot injury, according to The Athletic's Tashan Reed.
"He missed the first few practices of training camp after being placed on the COVID-19 list and will now miss more time. Vegas has [five] other active RBs on the roster," Reed tweeted.
While teams don't often cut players for injury alone, the Raiders could save $2.4 million by releasing Richard. There's a real chance the 27-year-old fan favorite will end up looking for work elsewhere."

What do you guys think? Any others that are worth looking at?

Report: Van Jefferson has 'a good chance' to be Rams' No. 3 receiver

Report: Van Jefferson has 'a good chance' to be Rams' No. 3 receiver

Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp are obviously going to be the Rams’ top two receivers again this season, maintaining their roles as starters on offense. Who replaces Josh Reynolds as the No. 3 receiver is still a mystery, however.

Van Jefferson was the clear-cut favorite to assume that role before the Rams signed DeSean Jackson and drafted Tutu Atwell, but their arrivals complicate things for the second-year receiver out of Florida.

He’s still a player the Rams have a lot of confidence in and will undoubtedly have a role this season, and it could very well be as the No. 3 receiver despite Jackson’s stellar play in camp. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN visited Rams camp and shared notes from what he learned, highlighting Jefferson’s play and his projected role on offense.

Van Jefferson has a good chance to man the No. 3 receiver spot despite the arrival of DeSean Jackson. He has had a really strong camp. Jackson will have his packages, but the Rams won’t overload his snaps, and Jefferson could often to be the first to spell Kupp and Woods out of two-receiver sets. At least that’s the way it’s trending.

Nothing terribly surprising here, considering Jefferson and Jackson are listed as co-starters at WR3 on the Rams’ first unofficial depth chart. Both played well in camp and should get plenty of opportunities offensively to make plays in the passing game.

Keeping Jackson fresh will be a priority, of course, given his injury history. That could lead to Jefferson getting more snaps than the veteran.

Fowler also noted that the Rams “appear all-in on Darrell Henderson Jr. as the lead running back,” which isn’t surprising either. He’s being treated like RB1 by Sean McVay, sitting out the preseason and getting first-team reps in practice.

But Fowler wrote, “remember the name Jake Funk” because the Rams are “very happy with his progress.” Funk will make his preseason debut Saturday against the Chargers, which will give fans a sense of his talent.

10 Things with Coleman Shelton

"I'm always competing with myself" | 10 Things with Coleman Shelton

1: Up north

Sarina: What does the offseason look like for you?

Coleman: I usually come back up to Seattle because I played at University of Washington, obviously, and my fiancé would like to live up here in the offseason because she still works up here. She comes down in-season and works remote, but it's always fun to come back up here and see some friends and I like training up here.

2: Trey!

Sarina: You're from Pasadena. You went to Loyola High School. Stereotypically speaking, offensive linemen are usually from the Midwest. Do you get called out for that?

Coleman: Funny, a lot of a lot of people say "I didn't think you were from L.A." But, both my parents are from different areas. My dad's from Tennessee and my mom's from Virginia, and they ended up out here. L.A. is where I was raised, and I loved it. I loved growing up in LA. And, yeah, I'm an offensive lineman but you know I still like to surf and go out and swim and stuff, so it's a good time.

3: Man with a Vans

Sarina: What's the most L.A. thing that you do?

Coleman: I've been wearing Vans since I was in the eighth grade. I still wear Vans. And, when I talk about the freeways, I always say "the" 101 or "the" 405 or "the" 110. Have you seen the SNL skit called "The Californians"? My brother's name is Trey.

4: Whit knows everything

Sarina: What has a guy like Andrew Whitworth taught you?

Coleman: Gosh, he's taught us so much. He's just one of those guys when he speaks up in the meeting room or on the field you just listen. He knows everything. He's been around so long and he's done it at such a high level. He's always willing to help anybody so we are very lucky to have him around.

5: When things got hairy

Sarina: Your hair used to be longer. What happened?

Coleman: I went to Loyola so we couldn't grow our hair out. It's an all-boys, private school. So as soon as I went to college, I was like, I want to grow it out. My first two and a half years, I let it go. And then, I figured it was time to come back to reality. I did love it. Definitely something I'm glad I did.

6: Earthling

Sarina: Would you ever try space tourism if you had the money for it?

Coleman: No, no, no. I love space movies and all that, but I think there's a lot on this earth that I have to see that I haven't.

7: Not so easy

Sarina: What is something you thought would be easy until you tried it?

Coleman: First thing that comes to mind are hover boards. They became a big trend when I was in college. Step on and you could just lean forward. I couldn't ride them for my life.

8: Geek Squad

Sarina: What do you geek out about?

Coleman: I'm a pretty big geek. I like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Marvel stuff, I kind of dive in on those like if I find a cool science-fiction thing or story that I just love. I go all in. That's another hobby of mine too, I like to know everything about a story. I don't know what it is that draws me to it, but as a kid, I always love superheroes. I always think it's cool to be able to take yourself out of reality and just to go into something else.

9: Puzzling

Sarina: What is a children's toy that you still get joy playing with?

Coleman: I love puzzles. I love using my mind. During quarantine, my fiancé and I did probably 10 jigsaw puzzles, like 1000 pieces.

10: Your toughest competition

Sarina: What is a goal for you this season, personal goal or team goal?

Coleman: My goal is to always push myself as hard as I can go. I'm not competing against anybody on the team ever. I'm always competing with myself, that's the way I look at it.

For Rams QB Bryce Perkins, it’s finally game time

THOUSAND OAKS — At the Rams’ minicamp and training camp this summer, Bryce Perkins and Duck Hodges spent a lot of time standing and watching Matthew Stafford get the ex-Lion’s share of practice reps and John Wolford take most of the rest.

But the two quarterbacks competing for a spot on the Rams’ roster knew they’d get their turn.

“We’re like, our time to shine is August 14th,” Perkins said.

Their time has arrived.

Perkins, who spent last season on the practice squad, and Hodges, the former Pittsburgh Steelers backup signed as a free agent in January, will take turns running the offense Saturday night when the Rams open the preseason against the Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Coach Sean McVay plans to hold 35 regulars out of the game and a similar number out of the next two exhibitions to protect against injuries, and Wolford wouldn’t have played anyway after having his appendix removed Aug. 6.

For someone like Perkins, 24, this is the long-overdue chance to suit up for an NFL game after the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the cancellation of the 2020 preseason.

“It’s going to be exciting. I know energy is going to be up. I’m going to be locked in and prepared,” Perkins said Friday of the game that will mark the first time fans watch the Rams or Chargers play a game at SoFi Stadium.

If Perkins’ patience has been tested, it’s not the first time.

The Arizona state high school championship-winning quarterback – younger brother of former UCLA running back Paul Perkins – had his college career interrupted when he fractured two vertebrae in his neck in an Arizona State practice in 2016. Surgery would have meant no more football. Instead, he recovered by spending four months in a neck brace.

Having fallen behind other ASU quarterbacks, Perkins decided to leave and spend the 2017 season at Arizona Western community college in Yuma, Ariz., demonstrating his health and ability for any major program that was watching.

Virginia was watching. Perkins passing and running led the Cavaliers to an 8-5 record and their first bowl victory in 13 seasons in 2018, and a 9-4 season and the ACC championship game in 2019. As a senior, he finished sixth in the nation in total yards with 4,299 (3,530 passing, 769 rushing) and fourth in pass completions (319), although he also threw the ninth-most interceptions (12).

Rams coach Sean McVay remembers seeing Perkins drive the Cavaliers to a touchdown pass that briefly tied the ACC championship game – before Trevor Lawrence and Clemson overwhelmed them.

But the Rams had already been aware of Perkins, since General Manager Les Snead’s son Logan was a walk-on linebacker at Virginia.

After Perkins was passed over in the 2020 draft, the Rams signed him as a free agent.

He has size (6-foot-3, 214 pounds), foot speed and a passing arm that the team thinks has improved in his year on the practice squad.

“When things break down off-schedule, (a blocker) gets beat, with that athleticism he can kind of find a way of, when it’s wrong, making it right,” McVay said.

“That’s what he did in his career at Virginia. He’s done that at practices for us over the last year. And now you guys will get a chance to see it too.”

A year without a game might have been a lucky break, because Perkins thinks he’ll look better Saturday than he would have if he’d been on the field in 2020.

“Last year, I remember hearing some of the play calls, and I’m like, ‘There’s no way I’ll ever be able to get these play calls down,’” he said. “But now I feel really comfortable about getting the play call, getting it out and then going up there and executing.

“I always take every opportunity to learn. My big thing is growth. I’d rather go out there when I feel ready mentally than rushing out there just because I want to be out there. I love coming out here, and taking different things from different guys, and learning to be a pro’s pro.”

Those guys include Stafford, the quarterback acquired from the Detroit Lions in a swap for Jared Goff in January.

“He’s great to work with,” Perkins said of the Rams’ new star. “He shows that he cares. The young guys, he doesn’t let us go out there and make mistakes without learning from it.”

Perkins’ first NFL game will be an exhibition and will find him working with a backup offensive line, receivers who won’t include Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, DeSean Jackson or Tyler Higbee, and a backfield that won’t include Darrell Henderson.

But at least it’s a game, Perkins’ first since a 36-28 loss to Kyle Trask and Florida in the Dec. 30, 2019 Orange Bowl.

“Being a football player and not playing football (for) a whole year,” he said, “kind of gets me anxious to get out there.”

Too many possibilities to make it a poll. You guys let me know what you're hyped most about.
Doesn't have to be one thing it can be as many as you choose.

For me it's definitely gonna be the backs. I hope we get to see quite a bit of the X-man and Dr Funk.
hopefully they shine enough to fill us with some stress relief.

Also looking forward to seeing SoFI rockin a bit.
I know some of you guys will be there. Hope you have a blast.

Edit Van Jefferson is McVay lets him on the field
