That oline!!

I mean, I think you've gotta be pretty happy - not just with previous enigma, Brian Allen! - with how they've all been holding up in pass protection. I mean, we're getting deep pass plays and not even off play-action!

Sure, I'd like to see a little more from the run game but I'm not so sure that isn't a reflection of the backs and not the line right now.

Really impressed with the line given that we have an aging (ancient!) LT, a new C and an inconsistent RT at times.

Stat of the Week: Week 3

This week, I'm looking at 3rd down efficiency.

In the first three games, the Rams have converted 54.3% of third downs, ranking 4th in the NFL.

In the next two weeks, the Rams play division rivals Arizona and Seattle. They currently rank 23rd (Arizona: 35.5%) and 20th (Seattle: 37.9%).

Continue those trends, and we can really take charge of the division.

MNF: Eagles at Cowboys

Monday Night Football: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys

Since the NFC East was formed in 1970, the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles have combined for 31 of 50 division titles. Their rivalry game this Monday night often proves the difference in who winds up making the playoffs and who comes up short.

The Eagles have had the Cowboys' number since the turn of the century, earning nine of 21 possible NFC East titles. The Cowboys are next up with five but have fallen short of a Super Bowl appearance, instead watching their rivals defeat Tom Brady and the Patriots for a Vince Lombardi trophy in early 2018.

Since then, the Cowboys have failed to gain postseason traction of their own. A two-year playoff drought has included injuries to starting quarterback Dak Prescott and the firing of former head coach Jason Garrett.

It makes Monday night's test all the more important between two teams that feel they're the best in the division. At 1-1, the Eagles have an ambitious young squad and a first-year head coach who surprised with a Week 1 dismantling of the Falcons. The Cowboys, meanwhile, put the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers on the ropes before a Brady comeback downed them in the closing seconds. A last-second, 56-yard field goal kept them from an 0-2 record with a key victory against the Chargers in Week 2.

Can the Cowboys pick up where they left off? Or will the Eagles rediscover their magic from Week 1?

Monday Night Football: Philadelphia (1-1) at Dallas (1-1)

Kickoff: Monday, Sept. 27 at 8:15 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN
Spread: Cowboys -3.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Can the Eagles' defensive front recover in time to stop the Dallas run game?
The Eagles received tough news this week with Pro Bowl defensive end Brandon Graham out for the season with a torn Achilles. Young teams need a veteran leader to corral them, and Graham, the longest-tenured member of the Eagles, was well-respected in the locker room as a captain.

"Everyone has to try to fill that void collectively because not one guy is going to be able to do that," Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said this week. "We do feel good with the leaders that we still have within the defense."

The thought process is Ryan Kerrigan will play more snaps while recently extended Josh Sweat will need to live up to his new contract. The Cowboys provide an immediate test with a run game ranked seventh in the NFL.

That's in large part to a surprising name: Tony Pollard, emerging as more than just a change-of-pace back. His 7.7 yards per carry average leads all running backs, combining with Ezekiel Elliott to put up 180 rush yards between them against the Chargers.

So far, that continues to be the Eagles' weakness; they were 23rd in rush defense last season and have started the year tied for 18th. Watch how they patch the Graham hole early because the Cowboys' first-quarter game plan will involve running it up the middle.

2. Which Eagles offense will show up?
Remember that yards per carry average from Pollard? He's actually third in the NFL behind the 8.5 of Jalen Hurts. Hurts drove the Eagles all over the field against the Falcons, posting 326 total yards, a 126.4 quarterback rating, and a 77.1 percent completion rate.

It felt like the Eagles started the year clicking on all cylinders. But last week? In their home debut against the San Francisco 49ers? They could only come up with a measly 11 points, eight of those happening in fourth-quarter garbage time.

Instead, the first eight offensive possessions included just 190 yards of offense when you take out a 91-yard bomb to Quez Watkins in the second quarter. Even then, it didn't matter, as the Eagles failed to score despite having 1st-and-goal at their opponents' 1-yard line.

The yo-yo has left everyone scratching their heads on which offense will come out against the Cowboys. DeVonta Smith and Jalen Reagor, Philadelphia's first-round picks the past two drafts, will be the key to moving the chains. They caught just four of their 12 targets in Week 2.

3. Can the Cowboys close the deal on offense with Dak?
Prescott looked phenomenal in Week 1, passing for 403 yards in a return from a devastating ankle injury that cut short his 2020 season. But Week 2 was a bit of a return to earth against the Chargers: no touchdown passes, one interception, and the loss of top wideout Amari Cooper to a rib injury.

Cooper is questionable for this game, although the Cowboys expect him to gut it out. Either way, Prescott needs to show he's capable of closing the deal. This team has the second-best offense in the NFC through two weeks, racking up an average of 435 total yards. But their red zone percentage (42.86 percent) ranks just 26th as there have been a long list of missed opportunities.

The Cowboys have had no problem moving the ball, only to stop short when it counts, like the last possession against the Chargers needing a 56-yard field goal to bail them out of overtime. That included some questionable calls by second-year head coach Mike McCarthy, but it also fell on the shoulders of the offense.

Field goals keep other teams in the game. Will the Cowboys convert those into touchdowns at home?

Final Analysis

The Eagles are clear underdogs Monday night. But there's something about the way the Cowboys haven't been able to pull away from their opponents despite dominating them on both sides of the ball. You keep teams in the game, you get bit in the fourth quarter, and the Eagles showed signs of late against the 49ers.

Both teams tend to get up for these rivalry games and the Eagles have overachieved thus far. I'll take them in a squeaker that leaves everyone wondering how they did it.

Prediction: Eagles 27, Cowboys 24

I'm just giddy

I'm beyond thrilled at the what I saw as a thrashing of the Bucs. Sure, their D had some injury issues.. but the offense was whole. Antonio Brown had six catches in 2 games and they still have Miller and Johnson, so I'm not buying that they were short at all.

This just looked like a complete team. Yeah.. I'm hoping the run game develops more, but I think that will come and that Tampa still has a stout front seven against the run.
The Rams passing game is sublime and only 3 games into their work together. Damn!!! We got a chance to see what integrating Djax looks like... and, well, that was fun!!

The defense was great today, imo. I think there was some meaningless yardage in there and they made some big plays when it mattered.

The Rams, as an organization, are just impressive.
I'm sorry, when you lose that many coaches and coordinators and key players and come back *better* (as a team, overall), you are damn, damn good organization.
Raheem Morris looks like he's getting a handle on this D and getting into a rhythm. Rams are averaging 3 sacks a game, which will get it done.

Player development on this team is friggen incredible. Getting a high number of mid and late round picks and then hitting on a high number of them is just fantastic.
SJD-6th, Gaines-4th, Lewis-3rd, Fuller-6th, Long-3rd plus guys who cost *nothing* to acquire in Reeder, Hollins and D Williams.. and a smart trade acquisition in Young. Wow.
Edwards-5th, Corbett.. 5th (trade), Allen 4th.. Michel (4th&6th)... Wow.

The Rams are unorthodox. They're doing things in a different way, but they're also, obviously, doing the most basic football roster building thing. They're finding guys they believe they can coach and they make them better.

Just fantastic stuff.. again, I'm giddy. Sorry for the stream of consciousness.. but having a lot of fun.

Rams stamp themselves as true Super Bowl contenders by blowing out Buccaneeers

When the Los Angeles Rams forced a missed field goal at the end of the first half, an excited Sean McVay jumped around and slapped fives with all the defensive players he could find. When DeSean Jacksonscored a long touchdown, McVay ran all the way to the tunnel to celebrate with him.
McVay knew what Sunday's game meant. The Rams' 34-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced to the NFL that they can be taken seriously as Super Bowl contenders. The final score was a lot closer than the game itself was. The Rams controlled the action most of the game.

The Rams got plenty of love after trading for Matthew Stafford. But until we saw them against a quality team there would be some questions. There aren't many teams in the NFL better than the defending champion Bucs, and the Rams outplayed them in every way possible on Sunday.

Matthew Stafford shines in win

Stafford didn't have much success at all against the best teams on the Detroit Lions' schedule in his time there. He started slow on Sunday too.
When Stafford got going, the Buccaneers couldn't do much with him. Stafford started spreading the ball around, without much pass rush to bother him, and his touchdown passes to Tyler Higbee, Cooper Kuppand a 75-yarder to Jackson to start the second half. When Tom Bradyrallied the Buccaneers for a touchdown drive to cut the Rams' lead to 21-14, Stafford coolly led a long drive that ended with Kupp's second touchdown.
When the Buccaneers did anything, the Rams had an answer. That's the sign of a team that should be playing deep into January.

Rams defense plays well too

For the first two weeks of the season, Tom Brady and the Bucs offense looked just about unstoppable. Brady had nine touchdowns through two games. He had none on Sunday until the final two minutes, when the game was decided and Gio Bernard got one.
The Rams had the top-ranked defense in the NFL last season, and they should be among the best again this season. The Buccaneers put up some yards, but a lot came late when the Rams were out to a nice lead. The Bucs built their championship team on a great defense and Brady's efficiency, and the Rams did a good job to minimize both on Sunday. They hit the Bucs hard at every turn.
Los Angeles and Tampa Bay could meet again in the postseason. Both teams are championship quality. But in the Rams' first huge test after the Stafford trade, they showed they could be the best team in the NFL.

Post-Game 3 Defense Talk (and yes some whining)

I don't know about you guys but I suspect Rapp lost his job today unfortunately. I go back to the post he "saved" by making that tackle and just his inability to flow with the receiver is a problem. The guy is not good at this version of defense, as Morris does not call the game well enough IMO to maximize his strengths. In that role where his calls have safeties flat-footed at the snap I believe they have better options.

Now if they can adjust things to have him in the box as a nicklebacker or have him moving into the box at the snap then all of a sudden he's not as much a liability. Just don't know if that's gonna be a thing or not and once again I want to lament not having All 22 those NFL bastids.

Rams defense did a lot of good things though today up front. The DL had a really strong game and that includes the edges. Young had some fuckups but also what Morris would call MAD plays where he really affected things. Ramsey of course was excellent.

Williams is costing himself some money with the way he's playing. Some of it is calls I think but goddamn. He needs to raise the bar or Morris needs to start calling things more aggressively in Williams' coverage at the least. Long all I can say is we're feeling the loss of Hill, but I actually did like Long's break on the ball on the one that would have been a PI late in the game. These two guys might both look a lot better with adjustments by Morris admittedly but just what I'm seeing right now.

Lastly tackling. I mean wtf. We have to lead the league in missed tackles. Can McVay find it in his heart to hold some fucking tackling drills???

Overall from the first game to the third game the unit has improved every week. So there's that. Also we did know Brady represented a big threat at being patient underneath and Morris' plan contained them enough to win. So I am not condemning anyone here by any means. But I am concerned with needing to contain a hot QB vs Arizona. Contain hopefully will be a big emphasis this week.

20 Random Busting the Bucs Thoughts

1. Great win! A joy to watch!

2. Matthew Stafford's MVP candidacy began in earnest today. He wasn't perfect, but he sure was great.

3. Cooper Kupp is having an All-Pro season.

4. Man... DJax is still ridiculously fast. Even more than his 75 yard TD, that was proven on his 42 yard catch and run. Speed kills!

5. You have to appreciate the OL. Kept Stafford clean for 3+ quarters before giving up a fairly meaningless sack, and doing just enough in the running game late to run down the clock.

6. DJax's TD really shows what we were missing last year, both in deep speed and an OL giving a QB time to let that type of play develop.

7. Aaron Donald doing a Aaron Donald things. Strip sack saves 3 points late in first half, sniffed out screen pass ends a drive. He's a beast.

8. Kenny Young, regarded as a bit of a throw-in when we traded Marcus Peters away, has become a very good player, and was the defensive MVP today (10 tackles, 1 sack, 3 tackles for loss).

9. I think the biggest advantage the Rams had today was at the CB position. With the Bucs thin at the position and losing Jamel Dean during the game, the Rams strength at the position was evident.

10. Numbers can lie. The Rams gave up 446 yards today, but most of them were pretty insignificant.

11. Once again, the late running game was important. Last two drives, which produced an important FG and milked the clock: Sony Michel had 8 carries for 40 yards.

12. Who had Tom Brady as the Bucs' leading rusher today? (14 yards)

13. The Rams had only one penalty for four yards (holding penalty on special teams that preceded the first scoring drive, a 95 yard TD drive). The Bucs had 7 penalties for 41 yards. In the first three games, the Rams have a total of only 7 penalties. Gotta love our discipline thus far!

14. Sean McVay was truly fired up today, particularly at the end of the first half. Of course, if you had McVay's record when leading at the half (40-0 now), you'd be fired up too!

15. Tyler Higbee made some great contributions today. Had Stafford not been sacked late, he was open for a HUGE gain.

16. Not Rams related, but... that Justin Tucker FG. Oh my LORD!!!!! (Poor Goff).

17. I saw some red in the stands, but that seemed like a home field advantage to me!

18. Divisional play in the next two weeks will be big. A chance to slap down the upstart Cardinals and potentially bury the (now 1-2) Seahawks. Bring them on!

19. The Rams still have trailed for only 2:03 this season. That's good for my stress level!

20. Brady frustrated, Rams 3-0. What more can we ask for?

Treylon Burks on Rams radar

On the Arkansas post game show after beating #7 Texas A&M, it was reported that a Rams scout visited Warren, AR. to talk to Treylon Burks High School coach.

There is no link that I can provide, but I think it’s plausible.

Burks is thought to be a first round prospect. He was first team all-SEC.

How good are Tampa?

I wasn't that impressed with Tampa what little I saw last season for the first two-thirds of last season.

Even after then I never thought they were unbeatable like I did the Chiefs going into the playoffs the previous year.

They've started off very well and sickeningly, Brady has looked very good (I will dance a happy jig when he retires), but no team has even gone 16-0 never mind 17-0 so they're in all likelihood going to drop games.

So, I'm wondering if the almost zero turnover of their starters has allowed them to effectively start with mid-season form and they're unlikely to get better (as I think we will, injuries notwithstanding), or they're just really, really good.

If Brady wins another ring I'm going to buy a cat just so I can kick the fucker up and down the road, so please tell me they're going down today and I can stop vomiting with anxiety.

SNF: Packers at 49’ers

Sunday Night Football: Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers

It's a short week for the Packers as they travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers on "Sunday Night Football." These two teams have played four times in the last three years with the squads splitting the meetings, which is fitting for their historic rivalry. Last year, Green Bay demolished San Francisco 34-17 on the road. Aaron Rodgers threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns in the victory, while Nick Mullens struggled mightily for the home team. Six of the last eight matchups between the two have taken place in San Francisco.

All is right in Green Bay as the team beat up on the visiting Lions 35-17 on "Monday Night Football." Rodgers chucked a bunch of touchdowns, and the defense calmed down after allowing an opening drive touchdown. The run game still was disappointing, but it didn't really matter since the home team's signal-caller had just five incompletions in 27 attempts. All of this came after a massively disappointing neutral field loss to the Saints in Week 1 during which everyone looked bad.

San Francisco finished up its two-game road trip with a pair of victories. The latest came over the Eagles 17-11 in Philadelphia. Jimmy Garoppolo was underwhelming statistically but made the plays when necessary, and Deebo Samuel was the main recipient of his throws. The defense stood tall, especially in the red zone, and that was a big reason for the 49ers' victory last Sunday. It's got to feel good to have two road wins with nine on the schedule this season.

Sunday Night Football: Green Bay (1-1) at San Francisco (2-0)

Kickoff: Sun, Sept 26 at 8:20 p.m. ET
TV: NBC
Spread: 49ers -3

Three Things to Watch

1. Intangibles

The short week for Green Bay definitely has to be a factor, especially when there is travel involved. The good thing is that there's familiarity between the two squads considering how much they've played recently. The Packers are hosting the Steelers next week, so there really isn't a look-ahead factor just yet for them. Meanwhile, this is the first home contest for the 49ers, so there could be an early boost, especially from a crowd that hasn't been to a game since 2019. Next up for them is another home contest, this time against divisional opponent Seattle. I don't think there will be a look-ahead either, even if the next game is more important.

2. Who is available?

The Niners may be 2-0, but their injury report is quite hefty. They lost Raheem Mostert after a couple of plays in Week 1 for the season. Also out is RB Jeff Wilson Jr., who is expected to return around midseason, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Elijah Mitchell had filled in for Mostert, but he's dealing with a shoulder injury that he suffered against the Eagles. Also getting hurt in that one was rookie Trey Sermon, who suffered a concussion on his first-ever NFL carry. The last RB of the group was JaMycal Hasty, but he has a high ankle sprain that will keep him "out for a while." The hope is that Sermon will play along with the only healthy holdover Trenton Cannon, whom the team claimed off waivers from Baltimore on Sept. 15. New Orleans and Detroit were both able to find a little bit of success on the ground against the Packers, so it's imperative for SF to find a healthy back and use him judiciously.

3. Rodgers to Adams

Green Bay's connection between Rodgers and Davante Adams worked really well last Monday and last year in the win over the Niners. He hauled in eight passes for 121 yards last week and posted 10 receptions for 173 yards and a score last November at Levi's Stadium. San Francisco's secondary is as injured as the running back group, as Emmanuel Moseley is dealing with a knee ailment while the team is already without Jason Verrett. They started a fifth-round rookie and longtime veteran Josh Norman in Week 2 and somehow survived against Philly. Rodgers knows how to pick apart a defense's weakness, and he'll also be able to keep the 49ers unit off balance with his quick snaps when the opposition tries to substitute.

Final Analysis

These two teams could definitely play a second time in the postseason, but this Week 3 meeting should be a lot of fun. The 49ers won two tough road games and should get a great reception at home. However, I'm concerned the injuries are going to catch up to them. The matchup that I think will decide this one is San Francisco's offense against Green Bay's defense, which has not been very stout. In situations like this, I usually lean to Rodgers and will do so once again, even on the road.

Prediction: Packers 27, 49ers 23

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember our core principles;we always show respect for our team and each other.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is the core rule of the GDT. Moderators are tasked to issue thread bans, at a minimum, to maintain this standard.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad. We are here for FUN, not to be dragged down.

What blatant corporate lie irritates you the most?

Please listen carefully as our menu options have recently changed' is annoying because if true, it would seem all companies do these days is change their fucking menu options every day.

We are experiencing higher than normal call volume is a beauty too. My bank is literally experiencing higher than normal call volume every time I call - which does tend to have me thinking that the higher levels are really the norm, and not what they were getting in 1967.

But I think my TV provider, Sky, pulled a rabbit out of the hat the other day telling me that my programmes were handpicked.

Of course they are Sky, Bob from accounting is sifting through all 12.7 million subscribers and wracking his brains wondering what everybody will like.

Then of course there is Demoff saying that he'd listen to the fans with the new logo.

Maybe he did and maybe he just thought 'fuck 'em' and it wasn't really utter bullshit.

Rams ranking high in DVAO

Long article, but if you scroll down to the weekly chart you can see that the Rams are 5th on offense and 4th on defense. On special teams, they are Dead last.

For those of you not familiar with DVOA it is a way to measure each individual play and measure against the league average. The plays are weighted with a value. Like red zone stops or goal line stands are more valuable than first down on the 40 yard line. Averaging 4 yards a carry doesn't mean as much if a team only averages 2ypc in the red zone.

Football Outsiders uses this statistic every week.
