Mitigating damage on defense

I think that's the name of the game, for the moment. It's a long season, players and schemes can grow.
One thing that's obvious is that if Long is matched up on a bigger WR, teams are just going to go after him, over and over and over.
So, for the time being, I think you have to get away from that.
One of the reasons that Ramsey is in the Star so much, in my opinion, is that it gives the defense a higher upside. More confusing matchups, more chances to create mistakes and turnovers. Putting him on the outside on a team's best WR is a good option, but it automatically helps the offense focus on where to go next. You think Rapp is an issue in coverage now? What happens when Ramsey is counted on to be on the outside, far away from the middle? Makes it that much easier to target him, imo.

That being said.. I think they need to make that adjustment, at least for this week and for a majority of the time. Hopefully Rochelle can grow up quickly, because he has the size needed for that spot.

The irony is that I think this morphs this defense into much more of a "bend don't break" unit than what they were trying to do.

We'll see.

My Super Early 2022 Rams Draft Watch List

Here are some players I'm looking at:

Bubba Bolden, S, Miami (FL)
Jalen Catalon, S, Arkansas
Andrew Booth, Jr., CB, Clemson
Rasheed Walker, OT, Penn State
Jason Kirkland, OT, Washington
Breese Hall, RB, Iowa State
Brenton Cox, OLB, Florida

The first three are DBs, with two safeties and a tall CB. With Darious Williams headed into free agency, and Taylor Rapp (who has been suspect in coverage) entering the final year of his rookie deal, I expect DB to be a high priority.

Walker and Kirkland are prospects that could be considered if Andrew Whitworth rides off into the sunset after this year.

Cox reminds me a bit of Leonard Floyd, and could be a good bookend.

Hall may seem an odd choice, but with Akers returning from injury, Henderson entering the final year of his rookie deal, and Michel entering free agency, we could look to bolster the RB corps. I like Hall's size (220 lbs) and pass catching ability.

What's different from last year?

Of course we have Stafford instead of Goff and Akers is missing on offense but through 4 games some pretty surprising numbers. On defense we lost Brockers, Johnson and Hill and a lot of fans are complaining about the defense. Apparently, rightly so.

Offense:

2021 Passing.....92 for 135 (68.1%) 1193 yds (8.84 yds/att) 11 TD 2 Int; 3 sacks allowed
2020 Passing.....88 for 122 (72.1%) 1020 yds (8.36 yds/att) 6 TD 2 Int; 6 sacks allowed

Clearly better with Stafford.

2021 Rushing.....99 for 372 (3.8) 2 TD
2020 Rushing....134 for 569 (4.2) 7 TD

Clearly not as good on the ground.

2021 Kicking.....8 FG
2020 Kicking.....5 FG

So we've scored 13 TDs and kicked 8 FGs (115 pts; 28.8 PPG) in 2021 and we're 3-1
We scored 13 TDs and kicked 5 FGs (106 pts; 26.5 PPG) in 2020 and we were 3-1

Defense:

2021 Pass D.....100 for 116 (86.2%) for 1093 yds (9.42 yds/att) 4 TD 3 Int, 12 sacks
2020 Pass D.....98 for 151 (64.9%) for 919 yds (6.08 yds/att) 5 TD 4 Int, 12 sacks

2021 Rush D....105 for 494 (4.7) 6 TD
2020 Rush D.....99 for 474 (4.8) 4 TD

2021 Opp FGs.....7
2020 Opp FGs.....6

Opponents have scored 10 TDs and kicked 7 FGs (91 pts; 22.8 PPG) in 2021
Opponents scored 9 TDs and kicked 6 FGs (81 pts: 20.3 PPG) in 2020

Clearly our offense is better passing, not as good on the ground and our defense is not as good as it was the first four games on 2020. But the record is the same. And the net difference in point differential is - 0.2 (+6.0 this year, +6.2 in 2020). Plus we've given up a ST TD on a blocked punt this year, which makes the net difference even bigger (- 1.9). Cause for concern?

A lot of complaints about our run D (which seems pretty much the same) but pass D is concerning. Last year we faced Dak, Wentz, Allen and Jones. This year Dalton, Wentz, Brady and Murray. From 64.9% to 86.2% completion percentage? 6.08 yds per attempt to 9.42 this year? Sure the TDs are down by 1 but the rushing TDs are up by 2. Points come out of the passing game, not necessarily directly by the passing game.

  • Poll Poll
Blueberry Poll

Do you like the blueberry uniform combo?

  • 1 - Ban the blueberries

    Votes: 54 60.7%
  • 2 - Get rid of the blue pants altogether

    Votes: 19 21.3%
  • 3 - I have terrible taste. Please slap me. Hard.

    Votes: 16 18.0%

I wanted to do a poll on the blueberries to see where the rest of the board stands. My questions here are framed in a completely neutral, unbiased manner, and I am totally not trying to use them to persuade anybody of anything. Pinky swear.

Since the poll option won't let me fully elaborate on each of my choices, I'll do so here:

1 - We should banish the blueberries. They are gawd-awful, uglier than a pigs ass, and worse, we never win in them. Please Rams never, ever wear these eyesores ever again, unless you hate your fans and want them to go to hell (where Satan's minions all wear blueberries, btw).

2 - Not only should be ban the blueberries, we should burn all the blue pants in an incinerator. Then we should take the ashes, put them in a rocket, and fire them into the sun. Then we should nuke the sun - twice - just to make sure.

3 - I have absolutely no taste whatsoever and therefore like the blueberries. I need to be slapped.

Found Some Old Ram Stuff In The Attic

I sold my old house... well, it closes this month anyway. So we are having to clean out our attic over there finally. The wife found this stuff up there on Saturday and I thought you guys might get a kick out of seeing this.

I'm gonna actually stick this sticker on something now...

This is a towel that was passed out in the Edward Jones Dome for our NFC Championship game against the eagles. I have 2 of these... but this is the one I was waving like a mad man during that game so it's got stains and shit on it. The other one I have is still in perfect condition.

This used to be my favorite visor. I had this embroidered on the side and wore it in my softball games. LOL

Overreaction Monday

The Rams are still the team that beat the Buccaneers team last week, convincingly. It was an emotional win on the biggest stage. Reading some comments on various threads, you'd think we might as well start figuring on an early vacation to Cabo and try to make another deal for a different QB.

I think this game was an aberration. the Rams SHOULD have beaten the Cardinals yesterday, but for whatever reason, were not mentally ready to play this game. Get on it Sean, you have till Thursday to right the ship or we're going down like a @blackbart submarine with screen doors!

What record are you "OK" with?

I'm trying to not overreact and just prognosticate on what I've seen so far from the players and coaches we have on this team...

I'm now happy with 11-6 and think that will get us into the playoffs. Not with HF advantage, but we proved yesterday that may not matter at all. We can beat anybody when we take our heads out of our poopholes. We can lose to anybody (anywhere) with our heads firmly implanted.

I'm concerned about Stafford, but not "worried". I think this game was an anomaly. I'm more concerned about Morris and team consistency.

After sleeping on this fubar of a game…

Both McVay and Morris were outcoached yesterday and by a wide margin.

First, let’s talk about McVay.

His overall team wasn’t ready to play these Cards from start to finish.
Stafford was clearly struggling but the run game was kicking butt, so why not run the ball until the Cards were forced to come up and stop it? THEN go back to some passing.
But no, McVay stubbornly kept dialing up passes which Kingsbury knew he would do.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to whisper in Stafford’s ear that Rams did have other great receivers on the field other than Kupp. Again, Cards D anticipated the constant Kupp targets and largely took them away.
How do Rams lose a home game when OL and run game are clicking and with a quality vet QB like Stafford surrounded by such receiving weapons? Mind boggling.
Card coaches studied and brilliantly schemed against Ram O tendencies and it succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. McVay needs to look in the mirror and self scout even though it’s a short week.
Rest assured that the Seahawks are studying this game film and will probably add a few wrinkles of their own. Better be prepared, Sean.

Now let’s talk about Morris.

I read that Cards only had to punt twice and at one point scored on 6 of 7 possessions. Ummmmm… WTH kind of D is THAT?
I failed to see Morris making any adjustments in this or any other game. Is he the anti-Staley?
WTH kind of a gameplan is it not to guarantee contain as Job One agains a QB like Murray? A 10 year old would do that, for crying out loud.
Morris’ D allowed 228 yards rushing. That is not a misprint.
Don’t know the TOP stats but I’m betting that they aren’t pretty. This is a major flaw in Morris’ scheme.
Gawd! Somebody tell Morris to insert Rochell for at least SOME of Long’s snaps. Would be impossible to be worse.
Use Ramsey to erase Seahawks most dangerous weapon. At least our secondary might then have a fighting chance. It’s old fashioned but it works.
Unleash the aggressiveness of DW and others and stop with this ‘prevent D’ kind of crap philosophy. It’s killing us and even Stevie Wonder can see that.
I would give strong consideration to giving snaps to Garrett at Edge. If he does well then give him more and more. What do you have to lose?
Tackling drills might be a good way to spend time in practice this week. Or is that too obvious?
Is AD sick? Or playing too many snaps? Doesn’t seem quite the same lately.
You are playing Rapp out of position, dammit! He should be a hybrid LB. Replace him with Burgess, Hughes, or whomever you please that has instincts and sufficient speed. QB’s are feasting on Rapp and Long. Fix it.
If you are unable or unwilling to discard this joke of a ‘soft zone’ D (or whatever you call it) then you should do the honorable thing and tender your resignation.

Now just a word about Stafford and Kupp.

They are 2 great players that had a terrible game at the worst possible time. Tons of credit should go to Cards players and coaches, btw. Both Stafford and Kupp will snap back, I’m sure, although I will say that Stafford has fallen into the trap of going to Kupp too much. Needs to spread it around a bit more to force D’s to cover everybody on every play.
If Kupp is double covered then somebody else is open, possibly wide open. Throw the damned ball to HIM.
Somehow, some way, you need to calibrate the range on DJ with his speed. He’s an incredible weapon but the underthrown balls are killing us.
Higbee should be getting even more targets, IMO, as well.

I do have 3 silver linings. Jefferson, Hendo, and the OL had fine games. Wish there were more.
