ALREADY PLAYED

Thursday, Dec. 23
San Francisco 49ers at Tennessee Titans, 8:20 pm (NFL Network)

TNF - 49’ers at Titans

Thursday Night Football: San Francisco 49ers vs. Tennessee Titans

Playoff positioning will be at a premium when the San Francisco 49ers head to Nashville in search of their third straight win and take on the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night.

The Titans lead the AFC South and enter Week 16 as the No. 3 seed in the AFC, while the 49ers find themselves third in the NFC West and the No. 6 seed in the NFC — remember: seven teams, not six, will make the playoffs this season — with three games to play.

While the 49ers' positioning may not be as high as that of their upcoming opponents, their recent momentum is certainly the more desired of the two. Not only have the 49ers been victorious in each of the last two weeks — with a three-point overtime win in Cincinnati in Week 14 and a 31-13 home win over Atlanta on Sunday — but they have also come out on top in their two most recent meetings against the Titans, including a 14-point win in Nashville in 2013 and a two-point home win in their last meeting in 2017.

Tennessee, meanwhile, returns home after dropping three of its last four games. The Titans' one positive in that span: a 20-0 win over Jacksonville in Week 14, picking off four interceptions from Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence en route to the shutout win. An encouraging key from an otherwise tough stretch: limiting turnovers. Tennessee's win over Jacksonville was not only its lone victory in their last four contests but also its only game of the four without a turnover. The three losses in that stretch? They featured 13 turnovers — six interceptions, seven fumbles lost (including one muffed punt against Houston) — with the 12 lost turnovers by the offense the most by any team between Weeks 11 and 15 this season.

Should the 49ers capitalize on those recent turnover-prone drives and secure any of their own, don't be surprised if San Francisco looks downfield to take advantage. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo leads the NFL in both yards per pass attempt (8.5) and yards per completion (12.6), so keep an eye on the 49ers' vertical passing offense if they manage to make some momentum-shifting plays.

Thursday Night Football: San Francisco (8-6) at Tennessee (9-5)

Kickoff: Thursday, Dec. 23, at 8:20 p.m. ET
TV: NFL Network
Spread: 49ers -3.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Will Nick Bosa's dominance continue?

Bosa has been a force to reckoned with along the 49ers' defensive front, wreaking all sorts of havoc behind the line of scrimmage for opposing offenses. Bosa enters Week 16 leading the NFL with 18 tackles for loss and sits tied just one spot below the league leaders in forced fumbles (four; three-way tie — including Bosa's brother Joey — for NFL lead with six) and sacks (15; NFL leader T.J. Watt: 17.5). Bosa has been on a tear as of late, collecting at least one sack in each of the last six games with eight total sacks in that span.

With those 15 sacks and three regular-season games still to play, Bosa is inching closer and closer to the franchise's single-season sack record of 19.5, posted by former linebacker Aldon Smith in 2012. His six-game streak with at least one sack is the longest in team history since Smith's seven-game streak in 2012, and his forced fumble against the Falcons — recovered by linebacker Fred Warner — was his fourth of the season (a single-season career-high) and sixth for his career. If he can keep that streak alive on Thursday night and continue to show how he's been among the league's best in 2021 — let alone his ability to rebound from missing all but two games in 2020 due to an ACL injury — then the 49ers will be well on their way to continuing their ascent up the standings.

2. Can the Titans manage two touchdowns?

Even against non-Bosa-led teams, the Titans have struggled to score points as of late. Tennessee has scored just 46 total points in its last three games, the sixth-lowest total of any NFL team over its last three games. The driving force for the Titans' results throughout the season has been remarkably simple: score two touchdowns. When scoring at least 14 points, the Titans are 9-1, with the one and only loss a 27-24 overtime loss at MetLife Stadium against the Jets in Week 4.

Tennessee has lost all four games when being held under that defining threshold, however, while — interestingly — scoring exactly 13 points in all four of those losses and never scoring fewer than 13 points in any regular-season game in 2021. Aside from Bosa, San Francisco's defense has been fairly middle-of-the-pack when it comes to scoring defense, allowing 22 points per game over the last three weeks and 22.4 points per game across the entire season. But where the 49ers have done quite well defensively is, incidentally, limiting opponents' early scoring in their respective home stadiums, as San Francisco has allowed just 9.4 first-half points per game on the road this season, the seventh-best mark in the league.

3. Who joins Garoppolo in the backfield … and can he produce?

In his second consecutive week handling the starting duties at running back in place of the injured Elijah Mitchell (knee, concussion), Jeff Wilson Jr. rushed 21 times for 110 yards and a touchdown — with two catches for nine more yards — in his first 100-yard game of the season. Wilson's totals could've been even more impactful had two of the 49ers' three rushing scores in the game not gone to Deebo Samuel and Kyle Juszczyk, who combined for just seven total carries in the win.

With the short week leading up to this week's matchup with Tennessee, San Francisco may once again elect to go with Wilson as the lead back if Mitchell is unable to recover and ramp up his readiness in time. The team has provided a reliable balance alongside Garoppolo, rushing for more than 126 yards per game in 2021 — the seventh-best mark in the league entering the final three weeks — and Wilson appears poised to keep that trending in the right direction should he be called upon once again.

Final Analysis

The 49ers' offense has encountered plenty of injuries to key playmakers like Mitchell, Raheem Mostert, Richie James, and Trey Sermon as well as reliable anchors in the trenches like Mike McGlinchey. The next group of playmakers, however, has found ways to pick up where the starters left off and keep the 49ers in playoff contention, presenting a tough obstacle as the Titans try to build on their win over Jacksonville two weeks ago rather than sputter through the final weeks. The 49ers' ability to continue their strong play in recent weeks will be a key factor as to whether San Francisco or Tennessee will maintain its respective spot in the playoff picture and which of the two will need to right the ship quickly heading into the final couple of games.

Prediction: 49ers 24, Titans 20

Will Stafford get snubbed? named alternate for Pro Bowl

Full Pro bowl roster comes out tonight at 7pm CST.

3 QB’s typically make the QB roster.

Rodgers and Brady are locks.

3rd QB will come down to Stafford vs Murray.

Honestly it’s a close race but I think our guy should get the nod.

Both teams 10-4.

Murray:
2021 stats: 11 games | 69.8 pct | 3,039 pass yds | 8.4 ypa | 20 pass TD | 10 INT | 270 rush yds | 5 rush TD | 11 fumbles

Stafford:
2021 stats: 14 games | 67.6 pct | 4,142 pass yds | 8.3 ypa | 35 pass TD | 10 INT | 36 rush yds | 0 rush TD | 3 fumbles

A few stats that really standout:

Murray 21 total turnovers through 11 games. 25 total TD.

Stafford 13 total turnovers in 14 (3 more) games. 35 total TD.

I know this is a popularity contest for
Fans but coaches and players also vote. The unbiased pick should be Stafford. The Lombardi is the one that counts but recognition is deserved for the pro bowl.

Who gets in Stafford or Murray?

PREGAME Rams at Viqueens Pregame Thread

I think the Vikes are a winnable game. They're a good offense and their QB is playing exceptional ball, but defensively they aren't all that. Matchup-wise I really like our chances and the same goes for the Colts vs the Cards.

We may be in sole possession of the division after this weekend. How bout them apples? Hope the Rams keep this up and take care of business. :laugh1:

Long ball to Cooper - did you see behind him?

Just wondering if I'm way off, but that TD dime to Kupp almost looked like he was aiming for OBJ who was wide open too.

I looked at the replay a few times, but couldn't get a good angle. OBJ broke a post at the same time right behind Kupp. Staffords head was looking more at Kupp than OBJ.....so, does anyone think it may have been to OBJ and Kupp cut right in front of it or am I just crazy :)

Van Jefferson

Obviously he’s had a decent season, but there’s something about his game that bugs me, and I’m curious if any of y’all noticed it as well…

It seems he always catches with his body, rarely attacks the ball with his hands. I’ve noticed it all year with multiple drops he’s had, and bobbles after the ball hits his body.

It stuck out to me last night when he made that catch in the middle of the field, it was clearly a ball he should have attacked with his hands, but caught it with his body and it bobbled a bit, with his dad being an NFL WR coach I would think he would attack the ball more.

I know some people may not care, but I have definitely realized it is caused him to drop a few. I know all catches can’t be with the hands, but it’s something I hope is addressed.

That’s all,
Go rams!

I gotta be honest, I'm a bit antsy

I was reading all the comments in here about the playoffs before the Seattle game and who people wanted/thought we'd get.

And I was thinking, I just want to make the playoffs, we still have a bunch of teams who are capable of tripping us up., I daren't get involved in this

I thought last night was going to be the easiest game and we won by 10, but it's impossible to ignore we got two very favourable calls and it took some Stafford/Cupp genius to pull it out.

Since losing to Green Bay, the Jags were awful, the Cards were pretty bad and the Seahawks played ok, but it's not like they're a good team and Wilson just looked off.

I'm not a glass half-empty kinda guy, I just have this nagging feeling we're not as good as we need to be to make a real run.

Just think of me as your youngest kid who has to go to the dentist and has all the mental strength of a kitten who has been relentlessly beaten senseless by its owner using another kitten as the weapon, and that's me at the moment.

20 Random Survive to Thrive Thoughts

1. Man, what a week.

2. Before the game, my attitude was to throw style points out the window and just get the win.

3. It certainly was not the prettiest game, but it was an impressive win nonetheless.

4. Impressive that the team turned in a fairly dominant performance (particularly on defense) despite the COVID turmoil this week.

5. Impressive to watch Cooper Kupp getting open over and over and over again.

6. Impressive to watch Sony Michel grinding out tough yards and making key big plays.

7. Aaron Donald, Vonn Miller and Leonard Floyd all with sacks. Let's see more of that!

8. Ernest Jones continuing to play well.

9. Jalen Ramsey is a difference maker.

10. Not a perfect game from Stafford, but some nice throws when we needed them.

11. So, are we out of the COVID woods?

12. Clearly, for some teams, the COVID hit is still yet to come.

13. So great seeing Jared Goff give us a gift of a Cardinals defeat.

14. Nice to see a frustrated Tom Brady get shut out.

15. For those worried about home field in the playoffs, the Rams are 5-2 at home and 5-2 on the road.

16. Back on the COVID thing... Seahawks fans who are crying about the postponement... give it a rest. COVID-19 didn't give us the win. COOPER-10 did. He is having an MVP type season, no doubt.

17. Let's hope we're getting close to herd immunity. Or is it mob immunity.

18. No rest for the weary as Vikings are up next. They are fighting for their playoff lives.

19. I'm starting to really feel good about this defense and the running game. These are two things I would not have said earlier in the season. This bodes well for the stretch run and the playoffs.

20. This could be a really exciting several weeks. Let's hope that COVID stays out of the Rams' way from now on.

TuNF 2 - Washington at Eagles

Washington Football Team vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Two NFL teams that have playoff hopes are set to meet in Philadephia as the Eagles host Washington on Tuesday night. This game was originally scheduled for Sunday but was one of three moved due to COVID-19 concerns across the league.

The change also means that these teams are now slated to play three divisional games in a span of 12 days, including two against each other (also Week 17 at Washington).

Last year, WFT swept both meetings, which snapped a six-game losing streak in the series. The more memorable of the two matchups was the second one on Jan. 3 when a Philly team that was only down 17-14 made a change to quarterback Nate Sudfeld in the fourth quarter, openly deciding to tank the game in order to improve their draft status. Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes in that one and got the victory despite two interceptions and three sacks.

Washington (6-7) saw its four-game winning streak end last Sunday in a 27-20 loss to the Cowboys. It was a horrific effort from the offense in which Taylor Heinicke threw for only 122 yards on 25 attempts and Antonio Gibson had 10 rushes for 36 yards. The team was down 24-0 before closing the gap in the fourth quarter when the contest was well in doubt. The defense forced two turnovers and held Dallas to four field goals, but it wasn't enough to get the victory.

The Eagles (6-7) are coming off a Week 14 bye, so they should be fresh and ready for this one. The last time we saw them was Dec. 5 when they beat the Jets 33-18 in New York with Gardner Minshew under center to win a fourth straight game. The former Jaguars QB hooked up with tight end Dallas Goedert plenty but was helped out by 120 rushing yards from Miles Sanders.

Although both teams are three games back of the division-leading Cowboys, they are in a virtual five-way tie with Minnesota, Atlanta, and New Orleans for the final NFC wild-card spot.

Washington (6-7) at Philadelphia (6-7)

Kickoff: Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. ET
TV: FOX (regionally)
Spread: Eagles -6

Three Things to Watch

1. Who is available for Washington?

Washington has been one of the hardest-hit teams during this latest league-wide COVID-19 outbreak. On Friday afternoon (when the schedule changes were announced), Washington had 23 players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. This includes starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke and backup Kyle Allen. Because of this, WFT signed free agent Garrett Gilbert earlier on Friday. The team also has Kyle Shurmur and Jordan Ta'amu on its practice squad. Moving the game back a couple of days could increase the chances of either Heinicke or Allen getting cleared, but it's highly likely the starting QB won't be announced until right before kickoff.

But the COVID-related news for Washington isn't all bad. On Saturday, four defensive linemen, including Jonathan Allen, were activated and restored to the active roster. Additionally, Montez Sweat, who has been on injured reserve, was removed from the COVID list and designated to return to practice. He is expected to be activated in time for Tuesday's game.

That still leaves plenty of key players, including linemen Matt Ioannidis and Tim Settle, as well as defensive backs Kendall Fuller and Kamren Curl, on the Reserve/COVID-19 list but things are beginning to improve. Additionally, wide receiver Terry McLaurin appears to be progressing and could be cleared from the concussion protocol, although the same can't be said for running back J.D. McKissic. Wideout Curtis Samuel (hamstring), guard Brandon Scherff (ankle), and linebacker Cole Holcomb (ankle) are other injured players who may or may not be available for Tuesday. This is clearly a team that is limping down the stretch and needs everyone available to try and make a late playoff push.

2. Minshew or Hurts?

When at full strength, Washington's defense has been pretty good, although it's been highly susceptible to the pass this season. WFT enters this game 30th in the NFL at 259.1 passing yards per game allowed. Meanwhile, the question for Philadelphia is who will be in at quarterback. Jalen Hurts is dealing with an ankle injury that is still limiting him in practice, even though he had a week off. Gardner Minshew filled in for him two weeks ago and he played very well, completing 20 of 25 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-18 walkover against the Jets. Hurts' mobility is a key part of his game and Washington has done a decent job against running QBs. Daniel Jones (95 yards), Cam Newton (46), and Patrick Mahomes (31) are the only signal-callers to gain more than 30 yards on the ground against WFT. With Hurts not at 100 percent and Minshew showing to be more than capable of running this offense, not to mention Washington's issues against the pass, the Eagles may play it safe and stick with the mustachioed one for another week, although the scheduling change buys Hurts a little more time to heal up.

3. Staying grounded

Last week, Miles Sanders ran for a season-high 120 yards on 24 carries. But he also suffered an ankle injury late in the game, which limited him in practice. However, he doesn't carry an injury designation for this game (the schedule change may have helped him in that respect), so he will play. The question will be what kind of workload he will get. Jordan Howard (knee) is banged up, so that leaves Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell to complement Sanders. Scott has been effective (4.7 ypc, 4 TDs) when given an opportunity while Gainwell has made more of an impact as a receiver (8.5 ypr, TD). Washington is fifth in the league in rushing defense (93.6 ypg), but remember this unit is likely going to be nowhere near full strength. As for WFT, Antonio Gibson is the lead back but he's averaging just 3.9 yards per carry for the season and has only one 100-yard game. Gibson has been dealing with his own injuries. The Eagles are 13th against the run (109.4 ypg), but have held the last two teams they faced (Giants and Jets) to just 70 rushing yards in each game. Washington needs to establish the run to help out its emergency quarterback and what is shaping up to be a depleted defense. Philadelphia would like to establish the run to wear down the aforementioned defense (and help out either a gimpy quarterback or one that's not as mobile).

Final Analysis

Moving the game to Tuesday buys Washington more time to clear up its Reserve/COVID-19 list, and things have already started to improve in that respect. Getting Allen and three other defensive linemen back (and possibly Sweat too) is critical as Philadephia is likely to try and pound the ball. But there are still plenty of key guys whose availability is less certain. That starts at quarterback, which could be manned by either a practice squad member or someone just signed on Friday. Meanwhile, the Eagles are coming off of their bye and even though their starting quarterback isn't completely healthy, they seem to be just fine when it comes to a Plan B. Even with the scheduling change, Philadelphia's roster is in better shape. That doesn't mean it will be a blowout, and it probably won't look very pretty at times, but look for the home team to get the job done.

Prediction: Eagles 24, Washington 20

Who do I play

I am the #1 seed finishing at 12-2 during the season. I am facing the #8 seed who was 7-7 and we are unbelievably deadlocked heading into Tuesdays games and we are both Ram fans living in So Fl which is unbelievable in itself. Brady and Kamara killed me as did Rhamondre.

I have Kupp, Jefferson and Henderson and can play two. So far I obviously have Kupp and leaning towards Van.

He has OBJ and Rams def.

2 Ram fans playing in a playoff game which will be decided by 4 Rams players lol.

Thoughts?
