Returning to Rams was always the goal for Joe Noteboom

Returning to Rams was always the goal for Joe Noteboom

In Joe Noteboom's mind, there was only one place he wanted to be as free agency approached.

The goal for the Rams offensive lineman was always to return to Los Angeles. And it was accomplished in short order, as he and the team agreed to terms on a three-year contract during the negotiating window that he officially signed on March 16.

"I wanted to come back here, that was my main thought," Noteboom said during a video conference with reporters Monday.

In doing so, Noteboom helps ensure as seamless of a transition at left tackle as an NFL team could hope for.

The 26-year-old Noteboom will succeed 40-year-old Andrew Whitworth – who announced his retirement on March 15 – as quarterback Matthew Stafford's blindside protector after backing up Whitworth over the last four seasons.

During that time, Noteboom played in 47 games, which included six starts at left guard prior to a season-ending torn ACL and MCL in 2019, then nine games at left tackle in 2020 while Whitworth recovered from a knee injury, then two games at left tackle in 2021. He also started against the Buccaneers in the Divisional Round of this year's playoffs when a knee injury kept Whitworth out of that game.

When not starting last season, he served as the extra tight end in heavy formations when the Rams made adjustments to their run game late last season and began using those formations more.

"Joe does an outstanding job," Stafford said during a video conference with reporters Monday. "I mean, he's a plug-and-play player for us. Wherever we needed him, he stepped in and played at a high level against some really quality opponents. Looking forward to seeing his development on the left side and seeing him do his thing for a bunch of years."

Noteboom is well-positioned to continue doing that because of working with Whitworth and the example Whitworth set. Among the biggest takeaways from that experience for Noteboom was the professional Whitworth was and the way he carried himself, like coming in early and how he took care of his body.

Of course, the on-the-field teaching was valuable, too, but his ownership of a process that allowed him to continually play at a high level physically, as well as his community work, leadership in the locker room and treatment of younger players.

It gave Noteboom a clear plan on how to be successful at that spot, and the confidence succeed moving forward.

"Being behind him, there's no other better situation in the league," Noteboom said. "Sixteen-year vet, Walter Payton Man of the Year, I mean, to step into this role, I've had a blueprint for it for four years. I was watching his every move on and off the field, so that's what gives me confidence to go into this position."

Signing three-year deal with Rams latest chapter in Brian Allen's comeback

Signing three-year deal with Rams latest chapter in Brian Allen's comeback

Considering how the 2019 and 2020 seasons went for Rams offensive lineman Brian Allen – and perhaps the early stages of the 2021 offseason went – getting a multi-year contract might have seemed improbable.

In 2019, there was the season-ending knee injury in Week 10 against the Steelers. In 2020, getting COVID-19 early in the year, then not playing in a single game as he continued to rehab his knee. In 2021, beginning the offseason program as backup center before becoming the starter during training camp a few months later – heading into a contract year, no less.

Put simply, a period of nearly two years that would be enough to cast doubt on being retained long-term.

"Just thinking back to 2019, that was – I talk about being in a dark place, and the place really is not knowing you're going to be playing football," Allen said during a video conference with reporters Monday. "You're hurt, you have a year left on your deal, and then you kind of get in that area of, 'OK, I'm free agent who hasn't played, or I'm a starter who plays in year four,' those things kind of set up this. In my mind, going into last year, I obviously wanted to be the starter last year but it went further than that. And I'd be lying to say that it wasn't in the back of my head that I wanted to have a great year to continue my football career."

Allen did and was rewarded with a three-year contract by the Rams, avoiding unrestricted free agency.

The commitment brings back an important part of Los Angeles' offensive success in 2021.

Beyond being durable and starting 20 of 21 regular season and playoff games during the Rams' Super Bowl LVI-winning campaign, Allen quickly established a strong rapport with quarterback Matthew Stafford that helped Stafford put together one of the most productive seasons for a signal-caller in franchise history – 41 passing touchdowns tied Kurt Warner's record, 4,886 passing yards set a new record – and the Rams rank ninth in total offense and eighth in scoring offense during the regular season.

"What I saw from him was a competitor," Stafford said during a video conference with reporters Monday. "He started training camp as the number two center with corporate plan center and you know, a different rotation going on and he battled his way into that starting lineup. He earned it and then he kept it throughout the year. He has great command of what we're trying to do and understanding of how we can go out there and get it done. He's a really physical player. He takes pride in trying to dominate people. I think of the snaps he had against Tampa early in the season against (defensive tackle) Vita Vea, who is as dominant of an inside player as there is in our league, and just his physicality, his finished both on the the first level and the second level is something that I think guys in that room really feed off of."

Even with that strong performance in 2021, Allen admitted free agency was more stressful than he thought it would be. It was his first time going through that process, after all, so he didn't know what to expect.

After the deal was signed and he was back in L.A. like he wanted to be, though, he was relieved and excited.

"Once free agency started, I really just want to get back there," Allen said. "So, glad it's over. Glad I am committed to playing football with the guys for three more years, and being somewhere where I have some familiarity and just people that I love being around and love going to work with."

Is DT A'Shawn Robinson a future chess piece for the Rams?

How important is rotational (DT) A'Shawn Robinson in the mind of the Rams brass?

9:06 PM · Mar 18, 2020

The #Rams are signing former #Lions DT A’Shawn Robinson to a two-year, $17 million deal, his agent, Sean Kiernan of
@RapSheet

A'Shawn will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season.

Is he worth investing beyond the 2022 season?

He's not a 3 down defensive lineman but he sure stepped up his game as a Ram in 2021.

He changed his diet and said he took his worth ethic to another level after Covid issues plagued him in 2020.

I was all smiles when A'Shawn was the lone player to give Sean McVay a Gatorade bath seconds after their Super Bowl LVI victory.

Robinson is still on the young side of 30, and I would be happy if the Rams discreetly offered him a contract extension this year.

Born March 21, 1995 (age 27)
Drafted 46th overall pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Rams Uniforms

Like many, I was aghast at the new uniforms when they were launched.

But whereas I'm still not that keen on the logo I think the unis fucking ROCK!

Having the helmets the same color just works soooo much better (why were they traditionally a darker blue, I don't ever remember hearing that?) and even though the Super Bowl colors are by no means my favorite combo (I really like the blue pants we seem to always lose in), I still like them.

The logo has grown on me a bit, but I still much prefer the angry ram.

So, er, sorry Kevin Demoff for calling you an utter c***!

The Run Game... what happened?

Fellow posters... I know the Rams run game took a hit when Akers went down early in the season. And Henderson was dinged up in usual fashion throughout the year, Xavier Jones was lost early in the year, and Jake Funk also got injured for a while. In hindsight, the Rams never really got the running game going last year, finishing 27th in game average I believe. Thank God for Sony Michel putting up some decent performances late in the year when the team really needed him

And even with Akers back, the Rams were completely shut out in the playoffs. I thought Akers would show some rust when he came back, and he did, although it was truly a gutsy performance by this young man. I am looking forward to seeing him in action next year, but so far he has not shown any real consistency.

My first question is why did the team struggle so much throughout the year? Obviously the injuries were the main reason, but one of their "top backs" was always available. They just couldn't do much of anything. I realize McVay will always be thinking about the next big pass play, but the team has always had a decent running game.

My second question is why was the Ram's run game so bad in the playoffs? Akers was back. They really didn't use Michel much. But for God's sake they were getting stuffed on almost every running play. It was pathetic to be quite honest. I'm not sure any other team would have run the table with those results.

My last question is how are they going to improve this year? I guarantee they will draft another running back, and it may be in an earlier round than we think. Is Sone Michel coming back? Do the Rams want him back? My guess would be they aren't going to offer him much, and he will be gone.

Is it the line? I thought the Rams had a good line last year, and now Big Whit has retired and Corbett is gone. We all believe that the team will draft another O-lineman in the draft, and that may happen fairly early. But right now the line appears to be worse than last year.

The bottom line is that the team needs to improve the run game next year. What is Snead and McVay's plan?

2022 Rams Draft Board

Here is my first stab at a draft board.

Its obviously extremely difficult to project who will last until the end of the third round. That said, this is my list of 15 prospects I feel would (1) be a very good fit, (2) would fill a current position of need, and (3) have a reasonable chance of being available when the Rams pick.

1. Josh Paschal, EDGE, Kentucky (RSr.), 6’3, 268 lbs.
2. Sam Williams, EDGE, Ole Miss (RSr.), 6’4, 261 lbs.
3. Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin (RSo.), 6’3, 250 lbs.
4. Joshua Williams, CB, Fayetteville State (Sr.), 6’3, 195 lbs.
5. Dylan Parham, OG, Memphis (RSr.), 6’3, 313 lbs.
6. Alontae Taylor, CB, Tennessee (Sr), 6’0, 199 lbs.
7. DeAngelo Malone, EDGE, Western Kentucky (RSr.), 6’4, 250
8. Martin Emmerson, CB, Mississippi State (Jr.), 6’2, 200 lbs.
9. Coby Bryant, CB, Cincinnati (Sr.), 6’1, 193 lbs.
10. Tyreke Smith, EDGE, Oklahoma (Sr.), 6’5, 265 lbs.
11. Chad Muma, LB, Wyoming (Sr.), 6’3, 239 lbs.
12. Brian Robinson, RB, Alabama (RSr.), 6’2, 226 lbs.
13. Darrian Kinnard, OG, Kentucky (Sr.), 6’5, 322 lbs.
14. Montaric Brown, CB, Arkansas (Sr.), 6’0, 190 lbs.
15. Jerome Ford, RB, Cincinnati (Jr.), 5’11, 220 lbs.

I’ve got a hypothetical and possibly semi-heretical question about AD’s possible extension…

Now hear me out before your mind slams closed…

AD is currently under contract and it’s a juicy one. At the time a record breaking one for a non-QB.

AD is gonna be 31 come May 23 and we all know Father Time is undefeated.

Rams are already struggling to sign FA’s because they are up against the cap. Current extensions are heavily backloaded to enable them to maximize certain elite talents for our SB window.

All the above are facts, are they not?

Question.

What would be so wrong with simply allowing AD to play out the last 3 years of his current contract as is? No raise, no extensions, just use the saved monies on other players for 3 more SB runs?

I realize that some will get emotional about this like they did about the Woods trade. But I’m seriously thinking this strategy has merit.

Your thoughts?

Turnovers - One reason I think Rams can repeat

In 2021-22 Rams had a 0 turnover differential.
Regular season +2
Playoffs: -2 (includes a +2 in Cardinals game)

Maybe someone better than me can look up historical stats.
I'm a big believer to dominate in NFL, winning the turnover battle is a key to success.
The Rams were average in a year they won the SB and were between poor and atrocious in the playoffs.

And they won the SB.

I really believe that the Rams should have been and will be better in turnover ratio in 2022/23.

This is one of the reasons I believe the Rams will repeat as SB champs

NFL broadcasting musical chairs: Catching you up on the announcers for 'MNF,' 'TNF' and more

NFL broadcasting musical chairs: Catching you up on the announcers for 'MNF,' 'TNF' and more

The movement in the 2022 NFL offseason hasn’t just included a bunch of star players.

There’s also been some changes in the broadcast booths. And if you’re head’s spinning a little bit trying to remember who’s gone where and who’s calling what game, we’ve got you covered.

There’s a new booth for Monday Night Football. Amazon’s Thursday Night Football will have its own pairing. Sunday Night Football has a new play-by-play voice (but one we’re familiar with). That means the lead announcers for top FOX NFL games will be new.

Let’s dive in and go over who’s where at the moment:

Monday Night Football: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman

The lead pairing from FOX joined ESPN to call Monday Night Football, replacing Steve Levy, Louis Riddick and Brian Griese.

Thursday Night Football: Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit

A new pairing! Michaels comes over from Sunday Night Football — there was a lot of talk about Michaels leaving NBC before it was official — and joins Herbstreit, who will remain with ESPN as a college football analyst.

The pair will be on Amazon Prime every Thursday.

Sunday Night Football: Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth

This makes sense. Tirico is great at calling NFL games. Only question here is: Will we see the Collinsworth Slide continue?

Lead CBS team: Jim Nantz and Tony Romo

No changes here.

Lead FOX team: TBD

This is the only question we have left to answer.

Could Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen move up? We’ll see.

Would You Do Something Illegal?

I know it seems that I am a very worldly guy with the finest culinary tastes (Hawaiian Pizza, for example} and my distinctive ability as a connoisseur of fine 40 ozers..... But I'm pretty square. I am no longer in a job where I worry about drug tests, and I believe that a certain substance that is illegal in Kansas is very legal in Colorado might relieve pain better than a prescribed narcotic.

I'm wondering how the border crossing works going from Colorado to Kansas... Does Kansas have agents that follow Kansas license plated vehicles back into the state from the shops in question? Or do they not care and you could be pulling a uhaul full of this substance without worries? Looking at you, @Merlin

Cooper Kupp is the best WR in the NFL

Cooper Kupp is currently the best WR in the NFL.

Going into the 2021 season, WR's like Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill and many others were ranked way above Kupp.

It's very likely Kupp would've been rated as a top 3 WR overall the last 3 seasons, if Stafford had been his QB over that time frame.

Top 10 rated WR's (YARDS) over the last 3 seasons.

Top 10 rated WR's in 2019 (yards)

1. Michael Thomas Saints
2. Julio Jones Falcons
3. DeAndre Hopkins Texans
4. Chris Godwin Bucs
5. Devante Adams Packers
6. Tyler Locket Seahawks
7. Stefon Diggs Vikings
8. Devante Parker Dolphins
9. Keenan Allen Chargers
10. Kenny Golladay Lions
14. (Cooper Kupp Rams)

Top 10 rated WR's in 2020 (yards)

1. Stefon Diggs Bills
2. Tyreek Hill Chiefs
3. Devante Adams Packers
4. DeAndre Hopkins Cardinals
5. Justin Jefferson Vikings
6. DK Metcalf Seahawks
7. Calvin Ridley Falcons
8. Allen Robinson Bears
9. Mike Evans Bucs
10. D.J. Moore Panthers
19. (Cooper Kupp Rams)

Top 10 rated WR's in 2021 (yards)

1. Cooper Kupp Rams

2. Ja'Marr Chase Bengals
3. Devante Adams Packers
4. Justin Jefferson Vikings
5. Deebo Samuel 49ers
6. Tyreek Hill Chiefs
7. Tee Higgins Bengals
8. Stefon Diggs Bills
9. Mike Evans Bucs
10. Dionte Johnson Steelers

Yards and Touchdowns are the usually the strongest indicators of the best WR's in the NFL.

Kupp ranked 14th, 19th and 1st in Yards over the last 3 seasons.

He's the best WR in the NFL today and the evidence over the last 3 seasons proves 2021 was far from a fluke.

I wouldn't trade Kupp for any WR in the NFL.

He's only 28 years old. (He will turn 29 on June 15th 2022).

Cooper is not a young buck anymore but he has the DNA/work ethic of a Jerry Rice to keep up with the youngsters until he's in his late 30's.

NFL Fans of the Los Angeles Rams are very blessed that you are a Ram Cooper Kupp

Florio & Simms debate/argue over Rams impending AD contract extension

Do you good folks think Simms & Florio rehearsed this debate about Aaron Donald prior to discussing it on their show?

They argued, fussed and debated about their opinions of why or why not Donald will or will not try to get every single penny he can with his next contract extension.

Did they think this would be a clever offseason drama debate to garner some offseason interest?
