In his best place physically and mentally since joining Rams, Terrell Lewis thriving in third season​

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – A healthy scratch for multiple games following the arrival of Von Miller. Continual external speculation about his knee.

For those and other reasons, the 2021 season did not go as Rams outside linebacker Terrell Lewis had hoped.

The 2022 season, however, has been a much different story.

With Miller gone and most the Rams' outside linebacker rotation returning, Lewis has been able to thrive so far as one of those returnees, helping make plays and put pressure on opposing quarterbacks through the first three games.

"Just stacking blocks," Lewis said during a video conference Monday. "I mean, I've been kind of coming out with the same mindset week in, week out, just trying to keep building off of it. It's real early in the season, so I like where I'm at, (but) I know I can take it even further. I think I left a couple – it was a couple of plays where I'm like, 'Man, it was almost a sack' or 'that was almost a pick.' So just keep building off of it and keep getting comfortable with our unit that's out there rushing together, and just being able to play off guys, know when my ops are, when when it's kind of like okay, I need to speed to power here, things like that."

Terrell Lewis on how 2022 season has gone so far, facing 49ers on Monday Night Football

So far, Lewis has had his hand in multiple plays. Through the first three weeks of the season, he's registered eight total tackles (one for loss), one sack, two QB hits, one interception and one forced fumble, being the disruptive force the Rams likely envisioned when they took the 6-foot-5, 262-pound edge defender in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Lewis has been able to flourish in part because of having the mindset to enjoy each day and each moment of the journey, which he said was something last year was taught him to do. He's also in a great space physically and mentally, and makes a concerted effort to pick the brains of veteran teammates like defensive back Jalen Ramsey, linebacker Bobby Wagner and defensive lineman Aaron Donald.

"I feel like mentally I'm in a great place," Lewis said, when asked what besides that mindset is different for him this year. "I feel like mentally, physically, I'm probably in the best place I've been since I've been here honestly."

Teammates noticed before the season began, too. In training camp, outside linebacker Leonard Floyd said Lewis had been taking care of his body during the offseason and could tell Lewis was pass-rushing with confidence in his knee, in terms of the bend being displayed by Lewis.

"T-Lew been playing like a professional so far this season," outside linebacker Leonard Floyd told theRams.com. "He's been coming in, doing his rehab, making sure he know his gameplan. He's been doing a good job of playing and going hard on Sundays, making plays. I'm proud of him so far."

Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris said Lewis has been healthy, moving well, rushing well and defending the run well and making plays every week. Lewis and Hollins are both splitting time at the other outside linebacker spot because they view both players as starters, according to Morris.

"Terrell's definitely showed up in a big way and had a major part in all the games that we played," Morris said Friday. "I credit him for the work he's put into in the offseason, the work that he's put into it just in general to get to this point. I'm proud of him for what he's done."

I think this deserves it's own thread because it's about all football players. I'm happy to see the concern (belated) over CTE. But it needs to be more than talk.

I saw that injury. IMO Tua should medically retire. If he plays again this season it would be criminal medical malpractice IMO. I spent 2 years working in ER, recovery, and SICU (trauma unit), trained in field emergency med, and it was fucking scary to watch him, especially his hands. The doctors are right that was a classic sign of brain trauma (TBI). I've seen it before, from the concussive force of explosions. Tua would be well on his way to CTE if he continues to play and would be surprised if he doesn't have symptoms later in his life even if he never has a concussion again. Tua needs long term help now.

I saw how Jr Seau deteriorated after he retired. I used to see him at his restaurant which was one of my favorites, and in the surfing scene since I lived in Carlsbad. It was beyond sad. Tua could get a coaching internship and still have a good football life. IMO the media would be complicit in fraud if they gloss over his injury.

I truly hope the NFL pays close attention to Tua and his injury. Brain injuries are cumulative and TBI can have a good long term prognosis when caught and addressed early and the TBI doesn't continue. It takes YEARS to even come close to fully recovering from TBI which is exactly what Tua suffered. The NFL would be criminally remiss if they didn't dictate a medical retirement for Tua. Research by the University of Pennsylvania has shown that even a single TBI injury can lead to dementia later in life. His injury can heal over time but it's critical that he not suffer more injuries.

For god sake, Tua retire. The NFL isn't worth dying for.

I love the NFL but there is no denying the violence and the toll that violence takes. I hope the NFL codifies how much injury is acceptable and at what level they say enough is enough.

And unfortunately even more that need good people. I have no problem admitting this hit hit me in t(e feels hard.

Week 3 post-game shows Brandon Staley may have lost Chargers locker room​

There is only one word to explain the LA Chargers' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3: ugly. Yes, the Chargers were dealing with some significant injuries heading into the game but that is not an excuse for how the team was out-coached and simply out-played.

Brandon Staley had 10 days to get his guys ready for this home game against an East Coast opponent. While the Jaguars are better than people realized heading into this, even with the injuries, it should not have been this ugly. Losing a competitive game is one thing, getting outright blown out is another.

Chargers fans have started to question Staley's future with the Chargers after this loss, but that should not concern the head coach. As long as he has the support of the organization, and more importantly, the players, Staley will be just fine. That being said, that may no longer be the case.

It was eye-raising that after this game there were only two team captains that were available to speak to the media: Justin Herbert and Austin Ekeler. None of the defensive captains talked to the media, and apparently, up and left the stadium relatively quickly.

Normally, this might be a nothing burger. However, former Chargers scout Brentley Weissman did tweet out (before this happened) that he was hearing some rumblings from inside the building that players were not buying into the coaching staff's messaging. While that is nothing but a rumor at this point, it is coming from a reputable source and ties in with the players not speaking to the media.

ether or not Weissman's statement is true is unclear but one thing is clear: this is a bad look for the team dynamic. No matter how you spin it, defensive captains not sticking around and speaking to the media after a loss like this is bad optics.

Everybody on this team talked all summer long about how much buy in there was between the staff and the roster for this upcoming season. That talk is gonna get put through the ringer over the next few weeks… buckle up.

Every NFL team is going to lose an ugly game or two during the season. Last year's AFC Champions lost to Mike White and the New York Jets and then dropped a 41-16 game to the Cleveland Browns the following week. Losing one ugly game is not a stake in the entire season. What is important is how the team responds.

The Chargers have another "easy" opponent in the Houston Texans next week. Regardless of all the injuries (which are very concerning), if the team comes out extremely flat once more it is going to be a very troubling sign.

Even if the Chargers win, if they come out and look flat and are not playing up to their ability then it is going to be indicative of this coaching staff. If that continues to bleed into the following weeks? Brandon Staley is going to feel his seat get real hot, real quick.

Hopefully, there is no merit to this and the team can come together and buy into one singular message. Because if this is true, this team is going nowhere, regardless of how talented it is.

Miami Dolphins vs. Cincinnati Bengals​

If anyone expected an AFC team to start 3-0 during the 2022 NFL season, it would be the defending champions of the conference, quarterback Joe Burrow and his Cincinnati Bengals. Instead, it’s the Miami Dolphins remaining as the last team standing, seeking their fourth straight win and geared up to play the 1-2 Bengals on the road as "Thursday Night Football" kicks off Week 4.

Miami has experienced early success on the back of first-year head coach Mike McDaniel's offensive scheme. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has flourished, doing just enough despite a concussion scare midway through Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills to lead his team to a surprise 21-19 upset. Three weeks into the year, he leads the AFC with 9.2 yards per pass attempt while his 117.8 passer rating ranks second to Lamar Jackson.

Burrow and the Bengals, meanwhile, are nowhere to be found on top of the leaderboard. Two tough losses to start the year by a total of six points left them stumbling out of the blocks before a 27-12 thumping of the Jets in Week 3 righted the ship. A retooled offensive line has been underwhelming, allowing Burrow to be sacked an AFC-high 15 times while his top target, Ja'Marr Chase, has been limited to 83 yards total in the last two games.

The Dolphins, now with a de facto two-game lead on the Bills, could make a statement by posting back-to-back wins against expected AFC Super Bowl contenders. The Bengals would enter the danger zone with a loss by falling to 1-3, losing a crucial tiebreaker with Miami in what's expected to be a crowded field vying for wild card playoff spots.

It's one of the biggest games yet of this still-early 2022 NFL season. Can the Dolphins continue their surprising forward momentum?

Three Things To Watch

1. How healthy is Tua?

Tagovailoa's hard hit against the turf during the Bills game didn't stop him from returning to start the second half. It also has opened up an NFLPA investigation into whether concussion protocol was handled properly after Tagovailoa was clearly disoriented from that initial blow just before halftime.

McDaniel was adamant the team would not have moved forward putting Tagovailoa back in if "there were any sort of red flags." That said, it's worth a look at how the quarterback was used during the second half: 5-for-8 for just 110 yards, 77 of which came in just two fourth-quarter plays.

Those deep throws — both to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle — showed Tua had at least some awareness of his surroundings. But if all is well in Dolphins land, why did McDaniel not initially clear his starting quarterback for Thursday's contest? Tua was listed as a DNP on Monday before clearing up he's planning to play, mentioning Tuesday he's "doing everything I can" to heal from ankle and back injuries — not head trauma.

If Tua can't go, Teddy Bridgewater steps in as one of the league's most capable backup quarterbacks. Either way, how the Dolphins utilize the position plays a huge factor for Thursday night, especially since their run game continues to struggle. Averaging just 64 yards on the ground through three weeks, ranked 31st out of 32 NFL teams, no Dolphins running back on the roster has gained more than 51 in a single game.

Add in the Bengals' eighth-ranked rushing defense, and it's clear the Dolphins will look to beat them through the air. For the record, Bridgewater struggled against the Bengals last December, throwing for just 98 yards when he was the Denver Broncos starter. Will the raw speed of Waddle and fellow receiver Tyreek Hill be enough no matter who starts?

2. Can Joe Burrow find his way through the Dolphins' defense?

Burrow can take a lesson from fellow AFC North quarterback Lamar Jackson on how to handle the Dolphins. Baltimore was unstoppable in Week 2 with Jackson putting up 318 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in the air while adding a fourth touchdown on the ground. The Ravens lost in spite of their offense – not because of it.

The Dolphins' defense, ranked 31st overall in total yards, struggled last week with another AFC premier quarterback. Josh Allen racked up a season-high 400 yards on 63 attempts, completing his first 11 consecutive passes. But the D also forced Allen to fumble on the second drive, a turnover that led to seven crucial points and proved the difference in the game. That takeaway gave them the cushion needed when the Buffalo offense was wearing Miami down in the second half.

That said, the Dolphins are expected to be tired on Thursday after the defensive unit was on the field for a whopping 40 minutes and 40 seconds. Can Burrow get in a rhythm early and keep them on their heels?

"We called a better game," Burrow said about the different mindset his team had against the Jets. "And we weren't behind in the first half."

Expect the Bengals to come out aggressive despite some key offensive players nursing injuries: running back Joe Mixon (ankle) and tight end Hayden Hurst (groin) were limited in practice. Both are expected to play.

3. Who cleans up their act on special teams?

The Dolphins nearly cost themselves the game Sunday with a "butt punt" that drew comparisons to Mark Sanchez’s infamous mishap with the Jets on Thanksgiving Day 2012. When Thomas Morstead hit a blocker with the football, the resulting safety out of the end zone gave the Bills a chance to drive into field goal range late in the fourth quarter. Morstead’s net of 39.5 yards per punt is fourth worst among NFL punters.

On the Bengals side, it's the kicking game they're worried about. Evan McPherson has somewhat recovered from a nightmare start, misses on both an extra point and a field goal that cost his team a potential opening week victory against the Steelers. But McPherson tacked on another missed field goal last week, a 41-yarder, putting a dent in his superhuman reputation after last year's impeccable playoff performance as a rookie.

The last thing you want to do if you're the Dolphins is give a quarterback like Burrow better field position. Can McPherson and his extended range ensure the Bengals make the most of the opportunity?

Final Analysis

The Dolphins have been so impressive on both sides of the ball. But a short week will leave them tired against a Bengals team starting to find their footing. There are no real assurances that Tua is completely healthy while the Dolphins' defense continues to bend against top-tier quarterbacks.

Cincinnati needs this game more. Expect them to take care of business at home and leave every team in the AFC with at least one loss just four weeks into 2022.

Prediction: Bengals 27, Dolphins 20

I saw the clip on Nick Scott Mic'd up. It looks like he's becoming one of the vocal leaders of the defense. I like it and I hope he lights up dweebo Samuel again on Monday.

Memento mentioned that she loved Louise Fletcher due to her Oscar acceptance speech, which took me down an Academy Awards rabbit hole of 70's award speeches.. Those who presented the awards were dressed to the nines and the men wore tuxedos. The stage/theater had an elegant gravitas to it and the actors were giants of the industry when movies and movie going, was a huge thing. When Best Movie Awards were announced, it was as much fun hearing the titles of great movies that lost to the winner.

Since I was a 60's and 70's baby. I remember the context of the time. I remembered going to the movie theater was a special event for me. I remember how disappointed I was that I couldn't see The Exorcist, because I was too young. I remember how important certain tv shows were and when one TV meant we were watching what the parents wanted, and I was SOL. I remember how delicious A/C wall units were in SoCal when we finally got one. I remember riding my bike so far away that it would have scared my Mom and Dad, had they known. I climbed trees, played with dangerous toys, enjoyed honest to God, long necked glass bottles of real cane sugar Dr Pepper. I remember women fighting over fake leather purses at the blue light special in KMart, and begging my Mom for a ham and cheese sandwich before leaving the store (loved them). I remember Christine Lund and Jerry Dunphy on the local news. Bowling for Dollars with Chick Hearn and my parents wearing silly costumes in getting on Lets Make a Deal with Monty Hall. I remember the relaxed joy of hearing Vin Scully call a Dodger game on the radio from Chavez Ravine on a hot Saturday afternoon. I remember Cal Worthington and his dog spot. Johnny Carson reigned as no one would again, as the King of Late Night on the Tonight Show.

In the 80's and afterward, I looked down on the 70's. I told myself that I hated Disco, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, and the Dallas Cowboys. I also hated the Yankees cause they beat my Dodgers twice in the late 70's. The popular colors were drab and cheesy. The fad clothing was ridiculous. But watching those old Academy Award Shows from the era, reminded me of what is missing now. The greatest generation was reaching retirement and they would never know (for the most part) the radical changes that were coming technologically. Most things were made in America and foreign stuff was considered cheap junk. Enduring the Great Depression, WW2. Korea made them pretty tough. They certainly were not perfect, but they were solid and their generation ruled the Earth in the 70's. That would begin to fade in the 80's as they retired. I miss my Grandparents and Great Grandparents and their way of life. I don't know why, but it makes me melancholy to see the crowds, formally dressed up to see a game show or a talk show. It was a different time.

Pretty underwhelming showing through three games. After the entire offseason where by all accounts he was lighting it up and looking unstoppable, he has only 7 catches and 12 total targets through three games. Zero down the field shots, zero back shoulder type balls down the field. Seems like only in breaking dig-routes, the occasional crosser, and a goal line fade or two.

For how high the expectations were and how much money were paying him, does the fault lie with ARob, Stafford, or McVay? I saw people talking yesterday about how OBJ seemed like an immediate fit for this offense even though his usage wasn't high early. I would agree with this.

Thoughts on his outlook this year??

I heard a report that said Dak would miss the week 5 game vs the Rams. Seems logical considering the type of injury he has. Has anyone heard the same?

That would make things a lot easier. Cooper Rush isn't a bad QB but he's a dink and dunk game manager type. If Morris simply tightens up the coverage and not concede passes in the 5-10 yard range the Rams should be able to handle him. Bottom line is that facing Rush is a lot better than facing Prescott.

He had 4 carries for 17 yards and didn't have another carry after that late got OB into the kicking net.

Did he get hurt on the play? Haven't seen or heard anything yet

I’m not generally a fan of the ‘soft zone’ D that Morris seems to love.

However…

I think perhaps it was the best strategy when forced to play so many kids in that secondary.

As always, we should judge by results and the results were pretty darned good. Kept Cards out of end zone for 60 minutes, only allowed 12 points, contained Cards running game nicely, held Murray to 2 scrambles for 8 yards, made Cards go for it on 4th down 4-5 times, and forced Murray to throw 58 times. I’ll take that all day long. So, kudos to Morris under very difficult conditions.

About Ramsey. Yeah, he personally played a helluva game, but I’m also impressed with his leadership with so many of our young secondary players. Coaches are great, of course, but Ramsey is really putting his heart into bringing this young secondary along. We were facing Cards with a rookie 6th rounder in Kendrick and Grant Haley by game 3. Color me very impressed.

Nice to see that breakout 2nd half by Akers. Perhaps he had a confidence breakthrough? The fumble was a definite bummer, though.

Boom, even though playing hurt had a quiet and effective game. That’s huge.

Don’t look now but Rams OL might be gelling together. We saw some holes and creases yesterday for a change.

I must confess that I’m both surprised and disappointed with AR’s assimilation into this O. Thought it would be quick, seamless, and dramatic. That perfect TD throw went right through AR’s HANDS, dammit! Thought AR would be a magnificent complement to Kupp for Stafford but here we are after 3 games and AR is actually seemingly struggling. Blows my mind. I think it’ll come together because of AR’s talent and desire but sooner would be better than later.

If you had told me prior to kickoff that we would see the following parlay I would have thought you were crazy. Both Kupp and AR dropping TD passes and Akers fumbling on the one foot line? C’mon… This game coulda been a damned blowout under ‘normal’ circumstances.

So Stafford CAN avoid stupid turnover passes after all. I was happy to see that.

Nice to see Lewis with some pressure, huh? More, please.

Rams have the makings of a very good secondary already on this roster. Need the players to get healthy and a bit more experience but the potential is undeniable. Durant and Kendrick, for example, have already had their trial by fire and only 3 games have been played. Nobody gets his bang for the buck with late rounders for secondary like Snead. Don’t know who his scouts are for secondary but they’re worth their weight in gold.

Great to see the resurgence on ST in coverage and returns. Powell was the beneficiary but he couldn’t have done much without the other 10 guys.

Speaking of Powell, he was a pleasant surprise as a WR, too. Guess it wasn’t just coachspeak on McVay’s part?

Don’t know what to say about Atwell that already hasn’t been said. Sigh…

Good to get this win. September wins count as much as those of December. Rest of our division is looking up to us and we can keep it that way if we can get healthy and gel on OL and Stafford/AR can get on same page soon. Not to mention VJ’s healthy return.

I’m speculating here, but maybe Snead is considering an addition at edge now? Our pressure still isn’t where we need it to be. And perhaps OBJ is actually becoming more and more likely? AR and Stafford aren’t quite clicking and VJ’s absence is due to something more serious than previously thought?

49ers are gonna be a big test. For both Rams O and their D. Jimmy G loves to feast on our middle with his quick short passes which eats Morris’ soft zone alive. And Rams need to manufacture some pressure somehow even if Jimmy G is throwing it in 2.5 seconds or less. I’m hopeful that Rams can now pretty much contain that 49er running game but am concerned about their passing game with such an inexperienced and unhealthy secondary for the Rams. Morris may have a scheme or 2 up his sleeve for this game. He’s had 7 months to prepare for it, after all.

Looks like Rams are in for another interesting season with their fair share of bumps along the way. Bring it on!

Some posters have wondered why we don't have clean, relaxing blowout wins anymore. That is no longer our identity.

We are a team that gambles and take chances, but more importantly, knows how to close out games.

We have superstars that know how to make plays, and in the middle of the game, they are going to take chances. Jalen is going to bite, Aaron may leave his gap for a sack, Stafford is going to force the ball in tight windows. There is going to adversity, and we're going to scratch our heads wondering why.

But when it counts, Aaron is getting that sack, Stafford and Kupp are going to drive the ball down the field. Jalen will get that clutch INT or pass break up.

That's how we won in the playoffs and that's how we're going to continue winning games.

I have had my doubts about his since the middle of last season but boy did he step up last night.

He was utterly outstanding at exactly the right time we needed him to be with 5th and 6th stringers in there with him.

I owe him an apology, not like he will give a nano-fuck about what I thought/said, but ya know, sorry Mr Ramsey

His overall best game in horns imho.

And I love Brandon Powell. As I said in the GDT, he's like Tutu, but good. And it's fun thinking a successful punt return is once a gain a little bit more than just securing the ball.

Lots for the Rams to improve on, which is a nice thing to say after a road win against a divisional opponent.
