Just re-watched the Bronco game…

Here’s some observations that I missed when watching live and that haven’t been all that well covered by the media…

First, this was McVay’s best schemed and play called game all year. He constantly demonstrated that he had self scouted and made desperately needed corrections. Great to see.

His usage of both Higbee and Hopkins was devastating both in receiving and blocking. This is a whole different Ram O when McVay incorporates both of his TE’s. Broncos never had an answer.

I watched both Aboushi and Skura live and thought that they played well both in run blocking and pass pro. I watched them live because those 2 were my biggest concerns on O at the time. But this time I focused on Nsekhe and Shelton. Guess what? They both had outstanding games and Akers and Mayfield were the beneficiaries and got all the glory.

This current OL already has sufficiently gelled together that they can do a pretty darned good job. They just devastated the #3 scoring D in the league. Pretty impressive for mostly 3rd-5th stringers that were constantly being re-shuffled every week until recently.

Nsekhe, in particular, should be strongly considered for extension as a backup LOT. He looks like a borderline starting LOT, imo. Brilliant Snead signing just when Rams really needed it.

I’m now convinced that our ‘23 OL will be just fine with the addition of one high draft pick as a OG/OC or a solid LOT that might fall to us in the 2nd.

Akers seems newborn. He’s now once again looking like an above average starting RB. I still advise drafting a RB from this rich draft but Akers and Williams would be very good backups at the very least.

Why, oh why has it taken McVay this long to rediscover his 12 personnel sets? Gawd…

Mayfield is thriving with McVay. It’s beyond obvious. Sure hope he sees the wisdom of signing here as a brief backup to Stafford. Would be a definite win-win-win situation long term.

I love our projected ‘23 WR room of Kupp, AR, Jefferson, Atwell, McCutcheon, and Trammel with either Stafford or Mayfield under center. No need to devote draft picks to THAT room.

I was pleased to see numerous flashes from youngsters in that front 7. Emphasis numerous.

Hoecht
Murchison
Williams
Brown IV
Keir Thomas

Hate to say I told you so about Durant… But I did tell you so. Lol. Polish him up on some things and we’ve got ourselves a real ballhawk to complement Ramsey. Those are hard to find. Hot Damn! Again, what took Morris so long to see the obvious?

It’s possible that Broncos caved in too easily because they’d lost confidence in Hackett and Russell Wilson. I dunno. But I will say this. Rams seemed well prepared and fired up after that Lambeau humiliation so it might not have mattered WHO Rams were playing that particular day. Rams players and coaches both seemed to want to vent their season long frustrations on whoever showed up. I’ve seldom been more proud of a Rams team effort. Btw, that’s twice I’ve claimed that in the last 3 games, both times with Mayfield’s at QB. Just saying.

Hopefully, we will see more of these youngsters getting their snaps in the final 2 games. It’s both fun and very enlightening.

I will say this. Rams seem to have a deeper bench at WR, OL, TE, Edge, DL, and CB than I had previously thought. Might have to revise my needs priority list. Lol.

Thoughts?

Coaching, GM Leadership and Owners with Deep Pockets...

...are better than having the 1st Overall Pick in the NFL Draft.

The Cardinal forum is in a turmoil about tanking for a high draft pick. I remember those days, where fans would 'fight' over winning meaningless games. I know we don't have a first rounder and I am ok with that. I want us to win out because life is short and winning is fun. I have confidence in the future that things will turn around, but even if the future isn't as rosy a picture as I think it will be, spending half the year hoping for your team to lose is a waste of time. It's a waste of life.

Offseason Roster Insanity

I know some of you are willing to go down this rabbit hole with me. And maybe a shitty candle on one of those old candle holder things. Or maybe a flashlight with shitty batteries. There is of course a ton we don't know but something like that cannot stop us.

Here's the top cap hits for 2023 courtesy of Sportrac. By the way they have a very cool "manage roster" function that you can move or cut players and see the impact, if you're worried about things like numbers. Which I obviously do not concern myself with from my evil lair and reclining easy chair. I will allow my underpaid minions like @OldSchool to correct me when I'm making outlandish assumptions about cap.

1672079876456.png

Loading up the 2023 Salary Cap for the Rams it says we're at -$1.9M...

1672080186675.png

The calculated market values listed above are the FAs. Of that group Gay is a key signing, Mayfield is likely to cost a ton more than that $6.5M listed, and Aboushi I think they may get inked before the offseason since he's been solid for us and is 31 so it's reasonable to think he's got a couple years left and let him compete for a job next year in camp. If any of them hit FA they are gone I think, simply because of our cap situation.

So the best place to start is the performance vs pay equation. Who's getting paid but delivering a steaming pile of excrement on the field?

Performance vs Pay low producers:

1. Robinson. If anyone is begging to be cut it is Robinson, who has been an enormously unsuccessful signing. But of course his contract looks like it keeps him here for year two, which is not the worst thing. This has after all been a shitty season all around, and Robinson is a catch radius guy, so there is still a chance we recoup value on the field with him.

2. Floyd. I suspect Leo's been playing hurt and from what it sounds like he does that a lot. But in terms of overall performance since the Rams ponied up the bucks for him, he has put the Rams in the red. We certainly have not garnered the value of what he is paid on the field. Hoecht coming out of nowhere demonstrates that you can find rotational strong side types without too much problem, so Floyd represents an easy way to reduce our PvP issue. I think he is a 100% certainty to be on the trade block, question is whether there are any takers.

3. Ramsey. I will say first off that Ramsey does some good things. He is a good starter still, just not the eraser he used to be. The problem is he is being paid as an eraser. So I think one of two things will happen this offseason. Either he will restructure to more closely equate his pay to what he is, or he will be traded. He has lost quickness without a doubt in my mind. He is only 28 still as well. So now is a really smart time to trade him. We can get out before the floor drops out from under him so to speak. Expectation is Rams put him on the market quickly if he balks at the restructure. If it was me he would be a 100% trade block option.

4. Stafford. I feel shitty even typing this one. He took a non-greedy contract to allow the team to stack things around him. He won us the Lombardi, I mean he was our best player in the crunch and that playoff run was Hall of Fame quality IMO. But the dude is old and beat up and had elbow surgery and looked shitty for chunks of this season. He did some good things too, granted. He was punished by that shitty OL too. But age is undefeated and the team has to ask that hard question of how much time does he have remaining. Do we realistically have two years left in him? I don't know the answer to that. So I'll say he may be a situation where they clear him out. Now if that happens the Rams would undoubtedly only move him to a place he wants to go. Not that it makes it any better, but he might get a better shot to win another ring with another team if this offseason is anything less than a slam dunk. Note: best option of all is the Rams get Baker inked on a short termer and having a fantastic 1-2 at QB but it's hard to imagine him doing that at this point, going off the film he is putting out right now.

5. Noteboom. This one seems similar to Robinson in that they just signed him so moving him I presume will be difficult. I seriously doubt a LT of the future slides to them in round two. So the only way we end up with a young buck who has legit LT upside is if we move up in the draft or if the guy has red flags and shit. So we're going to need Boom as a hold it down option at a minimum and who knows maybe he does a great job for us next year. I would just feel a ton better if they can find an upside type for the depth chart.

6. Allen. Using the Sportrac Manager to cut Allen nets us a $2.6M gain which, when coupled with his injury unavailability and general inconsistencies seems like a positive. So he looks like a cut to me. Best of luck to you Brian. Shelton will be penciled in as the starter at center this offseason and the team will draft a pivot midrounds. Or maybe they'll just draft a receiver midrounds instead just to watch RoD implode.

Random Thoughts After Watching

Good morning Ram Family…I have some very disorganized from the seat of my pants thoughts after watching the Ram game late on NFL Pass

1. How did the Rams run for over 150 yards on the ground against a top 5 defense?
2. How is it that a nonexistent OL opened up those holes?
3. How was it that Baker Mayfield looked more comfortable as a QB for the Rams in 3 weeks than anyone else not named Stafford or Warner? Did Baker look like he had complete command?
4. How does a scrub from another team come in and almost out sack T Lewis in one game versus T Lewis entire season?
5. Cam Akers…I am thrilled that Sean doubled his carries from the previous Green Bay game…the question is why? Is this a one off? Kudos for Cam’s production against that Denver D
6. If the entire Ram O is fueled by the run game as suggested by Tony Romo, then why have the Rams been avoiding it all season? Makeshift line? Attitudinal problems in the RB room? If your offense is geared toward an efficient run game, then are the games when we run the ball 10-11 times a surrender?
7. Thank you Bobby Wagner for being the pro future hall of famer that you are. You could have dogged it after your team blew up around you…but you raised your intensity instead.
8. If it was true that Baker Mayfield could not read a defense…it is no longer true.
9. I don’t know Cam Akers and his typical body language as it regards Sean McVay, but I would like to hear from some of you who follow that type of thing more closely than I. There were 2 interactions that jumped out to me. 1. After one of Cam’s TD’s I saw Sean deliberately seek out Cam to congratulate him…Cam seemed reluctant to receive the praise from Sean. 2. In the locker room Sean was presenting game balls and everyone who received one celebrated when he threw it to them….except for Cam. He caught it and turned around and walked to his locker..is that his personality? Is he holding a grudge?
10. This game was by far the most unexpected Christmas gift I received all day.

Punk ass Randy Gregory

I'm watching Boomer and Gio and some guy I don't recognize is at the table talking about the post game dustup.
He says Gregory declined comment other than to say 'if you want to know if I hit him in the mouth, yes I did'
I've been able to view a clip linked from an Awful Announcing email I received and I can say Aboushi landed
a retaliatory shot that was a lot more forceful.

GAME DAY MNF - Chargers at Colts

Los Angeles Chargers vs. Indianapolis Colts: Bolts Look to Stay Hot on MNF

Well if you are the Indianapolis Colts right now, where do you go from here? As everybody in the free world now knows, the Colts lost the biggest lead in NFL history when they allowed the Minnesota Vikings to overcome a 33-0 deficit to beat them 39-36 in overtime last week. Where on Earth is their mindset now? Do they rally around each other and play their best game of the year this week against the Chargers? Or do they completely crumble?

The statistic they showed late in that game on the NFL Network said that teams with 30-plus point leads were 1,548-1-1 in pro football games since 1930. Make that 1,548-TWO-1.

Oh, on top of all that, guess what else? The Colts (4-9-1) were officially eliminated from the postseason due to their loss to the Vikes and the Jaguars' win over the Jets this past Thursday. And now Indy is making a change at quarterback as Matt Ryan has now been at the controls of both the biggest lead ever blown in NFL history AND the biggest lead ever blown in a Super Bowl. We all remember that 28-3 lead that wilted away against Tom Brady and the Patriots a few years ago. Ugh.

Meanwhile, it's all balloons and seashells for the Chargers. They have a chance to clinch a playoff spot with a win here and some losses by the Raiders and Patriots. The Chargers (8-6) have won three of their last four games, all in dramatic fashion. In fact, interesting stat of the day: All eight of the Chargers' wins have come by a single score. So get those fingernails ready for another panic of a finish.

Three Things to Watch

1. Foles back in the fold

Oy vey. The Colts will be starting their third quarterback of the season as they yank Matt Ryan and turn the keys over to Nick Foles, who has started just one game in the last two seasons (leading the Bears to a win over Seattle in Week 16 last year). And he will make the move from scout team to the first team, knowing that the Colts' O-line has an NFL-worst 47 percent pass block win rate. Not the ideal situation for Foles to step into, obviously. The Super Bowl 52 (I hate the Roman numerals they use) MVP took over for Carson Wentz in that magical Eagles season and hopes to have a similar result here for Indy… well, he won't win the Super Bowl or anything, I'm just saying he hopes for positive results. He'll be operating without star running back Jonathan Taylor, who went to the IR, but he will have Zack Moss (24 carries, 81 yards vs. Minnesota) and Deon Jackson (13 for 55) to attack that 31st-ranked rush defense of the Chargers.

2. Keep Austin hot

Speaking of running backs, did you guys happen to see the game that Dalvin Cook had against the Colts last week? Aye-yaye-yaye. The Viking running back ran for 95 yards on 17 carries and gained 95 yards on four catches. That included the game-tying touchdown on a mind-blowing 64-yard screen pass. All of which means Austin Ekeler should be licking his chops for Monday night. The Charger running back has 95 catches this season, which is not only 21 more than any other RB in the league, he is five catches away from becoming just the fifth at his position to haul in 100 or more catches in a season.

3. Look for another clutch performance by Justin Herbert

The former Oregon Duck keeps on growing up before our eyes. As mentioned above, he has won eight games by a single score this season. Last week, he took the Chargers 52 yards down the field in the final 50 seconds to set up the game-winning field goal to beat Tennessee 17-14. And it still wasn't a "great" game for him by any means, though he did throw for 313 yards but had no touchdowns and two picks. Still, he is getting his sea legs under him when it comes to the final minutes in games, throwing darts to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, among his many targets. The Colts actually rank 10th in the league giving up just 206 passing yards per game, but Kirk Cousins was able to torch them for 460 yards and four touchdowns last week. With their playoff hopes dashed, Herbert could be throwing against a demoralized defense this week.

Final Analysis

Obviously two teams in two different circumstances involving their seasons. It will be tough to tell which Colts team will show up here, the one from the first half against the Vikings or the one from the second half? Last week's first half aside, the Colts' offense has been mostly bad this season, failing to reach the 20-point level in nine of their first 13 games. And now they'll move forward with a new QB? Mercy.

One thing to keep in mind about the Colts' defense: they have given up 55 points in the last two fourth quarters. As of press time they have not been able to petition and get this game shortened to three quarters.

Prediction: Chargers 38, Colts 34

20 Random Turning the Yuletide Thoughts

1. So who had 51-14 in the pool (and can you pick my lottery numbers next week?)

2. Clearly this team needs a new nickname: The Greatest Show Unhurt.

3. Seriously… that may have been meaningless, but it was fun.

4. We, of course, should not make too much of this one, but there are a few things that could be significant going forward that we saw today.

5. I’ll start with Cam Akers. Maybe there’s still a future there. I still want to add to the backfield this offseason, but he has looked very good in recent weeks leading up to today’s huge game. Maybe he’s finally getting fully healthy…and I’m not just talking about his Achilles.

6. Baker Mayfield…is he playing too well to expect he’ll accept a backup role?

7. Tyler Higbee teases us again.

8. Larrell Murchison… fluke or find? (and will we see him again this year)

9. Cobie Durant… I like this kid. He’s a keeper.

10. Bobby Wagner… if he played Seattle or Russell Wilson every week, he’d be the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

11. Speaking of Wilson…I predicted his demise (along with the Broncos’) before the season. One of my few correct predictions.

12. Hard to believe that Denver had the No. 3 defense in the NFL coming into this game.

13. When the Rams were up by 30, they thought about putting in their backups. Then they realized that the backups had all started the game.

14. So, those who celebrate…X-mas games good or bad?

15. There were actually two Hanukkah games…which didn’t bother me one bit! (That’s a latka football!)

16. I like that our team has not given up.

17. I’m hopeful for the future.

18. Just give us some health next year.

19. Happy Holidays, ROD!

20. 51 points…seriously?
