Draft strategy, post Ramsey trade

Last draft the Rams chose 4 DBs, likely knowing Ramsey might have to be dealt, along with the FAs the Rams would not be able to retain. In the deal with the dolphins, the Rams not only acquired another 3rd round pick, but a little used TE.

1) this draft/off season is supposedly for rebuilding the offense. In a TE rich draft, shouldn’t the Rams be drafting one even though they just acquired one via trade?
2) the departure of ramsey does create a need at CB, but should it be a top priority? Above Edge or DL? A healthy pass rush can do wonders for a secondary.
3) how often and early do the Rams pick an OL?
4) where do you have RB, Kicker, and QB prioritized in the off season? That is, how do we go about getting them?

Bottom line, you have a 2nd and two 3rds. Those should be impact picks. What are the targets?

The Ram's War Room?

We aren't privy to discussions between McVay and Snead, but I am certain that they have specific plans for the Rams going forward. I know there are some anxieties on this board because of uncertainty but I trust in McVay. In 6 years, we have 5 seasons with winning records. The one losing season was a miserable injury riddled season. But we also had 4 playoff appearances, 2 Superbowl appearances, and a super bowl championship. I'll take it.

I trust in McSnead to get it done. The bar has been raised so we expect more, which is good. But I can recall so many bad years where I was just hoping the Rams would be respectable. Now we expect to win super bowls. That's a good thing. But we also need to realize that the window to win it all isn't open every single year. This could be a year where we take some lumps for going all in for SB 56, but with good fortune and a good draft, who knows?

To be honest, I never in my wildest dreams thought the Rams would win SB 56. I figured we could win a few playoff games. But when the whiners beat the packers and we had home field for the NFCCG, I started to hope and dream of a title.

I don't know what the plan is going forward, but I trust McVay and Snead. And, Cooper Kupp was a 3rd round pick. Enough said?

This is far from a remodel.

You know how I can legitimately call him a liar is because Snead knew the compensation for Ramsey was pitiful but he still made the deal. If this was a remodel we would have kept Ramsey, Floyd and Wagner, not asked Robinson to seek a trade and have rumors out there that Stafford is on the block (Snead denies) where there is smoke there is fire.

If we got an absolute killer deal for a top 2 at his position in the league maybe we all would get it but this is a full blown rebuild what a fucking liar. This deal is an embarrassment to the organization just like his resigning of Goff after 3 years only to dump him a year later after watching every practice and game and zero need to resign him after year 3 especially if there were any reservations. Feels like this GM doesn't have the business acumen to be in charge of this franchise too many stupid mistakes.

MISTAKES - The Gurley resigning, the Goff new deal after 3 years, Goff/Stafford trade was really steep, signing Wagner for 5 years and let's him go, getting nothing for Floyd and taking Tutu, Jefferson in the 2nd round when there were way better players with much huger needs available etc.

I have been a big supporter of him but all these cumulative mistakes are too hard to not forgive and this was the straw that broke the camels back.

No amount of spin is going to save he or McVay on this trade. Miami gave Denver a 1st, 4th in 2024 and Chase Edmunds we got a mid 3rd rounder and TE that literally has 1 catch for 8 yards in the NFL in 2 years this is unacceptable period. Ramsey is a top 2 CB, Chubb is a top 15 maybe OLB not Joey or Nick Bosa, TJ Watt, Myles Garrett etc.

Movie Sequel Better Than Original

I can think of three, but maybe you all can come up with more? My offering is Billy Jack. I loved Billy Jack and his fight against the town/ranchers. BUT, Tom Laughlin had to make another movie before Billy Jack to raise money for its production. That fund raiser was through the first Billy Jack movie, The Born Losers. Films with violent biker gangs was a popular subject in the 60's and so Laughlin made the popular movie so he could then make the movie he wanted to make, Billy Jack,

So which sequels can you think of that were better than the original?

Rams Back up QB 2023

With free agency approaching, do we sign someone from this list?

Or, what will be our strategy?

Hard to imagine drafting one early in this draft, so… it feels like McVay will pick someone more proven?

What do you think?

UFL GDT - XFL Week 4 Game Thread

Week 4 XFL schedule

Saturday, March 11

  • 7:00 p.m. — Houston Roughnecks at Orlando Guardians — FX, ESPN+
  • 10:00 p.m. — San Antonio Brahmas at Seattle Sea Dragons — FX, ESPN+

Sunday, March 12
  • 4:00 p.m. — Arlington Renegades at St. Louis Battlehawks — ESPN2, ESPN+
  • 7:00 p.m. — Vegas Vipers at DC Defenders — ESPN2, ESPN+

Houston Roughnecks (3-0) at Orlando Guardians (0-3)

Date: Saturday, March 11 | Time: 7 p.m. ET
Location: Camping World Stadium (Orlando, Florida)
TV: FX | Stream: fuboTV (try for free)

This is a rematch of Houston's 33-12 win over Orlando back in Week 1. Things were close early on before the Roughnecks took control of the game in the second quarter. Houston has continued to roll since that game, while Orlando is still in search of its first win.

Prediction: Roughnecks over Guardians

San Antonio Brahmas (1-2) at Seattle Sea Dragons (1-2)

Date: Saturday, March 11 | Time: 10 p.m. ET
Location: Lumen Field (Seattle)
TV: FX | Stream: fuboTV (try for free)

On paper, this should be a close game between two pretty equal teams. The Brahmas have a tough defense, but the Sea Dragons have the better quarterback in Ben DiNucci, who threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns in last week's dramatic win over the Vipers.

Prediction: Sea Dragons over Brahmas

Arlington Renegades (2-1) at St. Louis BattleHawks (2-1)

Date: Sunday, March 12 | Time: 4 p.m. ET
Location: The Dome at America's Center (St. Louis, Missouri)
TV: ESPN2 | Stream: fuboTV (try for free)

Another game that should go down to the wire. Arlington is coming off a 10-9 win over Orlando, while St. Louis is hoping to bounce back after losing a 34-28 decision last weekend to the Defenders. The BattleHawks will finally get a chance to play in front of their home fans after spending the first three weeks on the road.

Prediction: BattleHawks over Renegades

Vegas Vipers (0-3) at D.C. Defenders (3-0)

Date: Sunday, March 12 | Time: 7 p.m. ET
Location: Audi Field (Washington, D.C.)
TV: ESPN2 | Stream: fuboTV (try for free)

The Defenders won a shootout last week after winning moderately low-scoring games the season's first two weeks. Vegas, who has struggled on offense all year, will have to stop the Defenders' formidable running game while giving their offense favorable situations in order to have a shot at pulling off an upset.

Prediction: Defenders over Vipers

Cap & Roster Remodel

I think the bloodletting is done. The Rams are under the cap now. Once Wagner's and Shelton's releases are finalized they will be about $1.9M under the cap. They will need about $10M more space to sign their draft class and leave the usual room for contingencies during the season. They can do that in various ways by simply not re-signing some of their FAs. There is a core of priority FA they will sign but A'Shawn Robinson, Rapp and Hill are probably not among them and will save them a lot of cap, enough to sign the core priority FAs like Gaines, Scott, Powell, Hoecht, and Copeland among others.

Depending upon how the Ramsey trade goes, they could eventually fill their priority roster holes in the draft. This is going to be a different roster. Leaner but that is not to say less capable. They would still be a playoff contender, and we have seen in their SB run that sometimes the luck of the draw is as important as where you finished, i.e. division winner or wildcard. Top wildcard is better than 3rd or 4th division champs. IMO this is what Snead was referring to regarding tempering expectations. Finishing in the top 2 of the divisions is obviously good, and finishing at the top of the wildcards is better than the bottom two of the divisions.

The media as usual has their heads on backward. For DaSilva to say QB2 isn't a concern is to ignore last season is laughable. Profootball Talk is all doom and gloom for the Rams. Don't fall prey to their propaganda BS. This time of year I tune out a whole lot of the media.

I see Snead keeping his first round picks in his wallet for next year. If they need a QB then he would have the capital to trade for one or move up in the draft. But we have seen McVay prefers vet QBs. I think all the roster moves were to be able to make Mayfield an offer of $7-$8M in 2003 to be a backup. If Mayfield is smart he will take it considering Stafford's health issues. Baker IMO now understands the value of being on a team that truly wants him. I doubt if anyone offers him more than $10M/year.

Personally my dream would be if the Rams could find a way to grab Penix next year. He's a first year starter who is already a fit for McVay's offense. Realistically Baker is their most realistic option.

Do the Rams Have A Plan?

Seems like the Rams are losing a lot of key players so far this offseason! Just wondering if the Rams have some kind of Surprise/Huge Plan to replace these players or it is all just Salary Cap moves that have to be made!

I a certainly hoping that Les Snead and the Rams have some plans to adequately replace the players that they are losing OR it could be some rough seasons ahead for the Rams and us Rams Fans!!

Shelton voids final year of his contract so he is a FA

Interestingly, Coleman Shelton voided his final year to make himself a FA. Apparently, the Rams wanted him to renegotiate his two year deal. The Rams will likely release Allen despite being the only center they have on the roster. Cole Toner is a bit of an enigma in that he doesn't show up on the FA lists and yet isn't on the roster. The last I heard he was a protected vet on the PS being cross-trained as a center.

When Toner was with the Chargers a couple of years ago he didn't look good. Not bad per se but certainly not good. If the Rams weren't happy about paying Shelton less than $2M and aren't happy with Allen's injury history, they basically now have a huge hole in the OL. But with Shelton as good as gone and the long term outlook with Allen in doubt Toner might be their best option at this point.

One scenario I can see is the Rams drafting someone like Steve Avila out of TCU. That would mean keeping Allen one more year while they develop a rookie like Avila to play center in the NFL

A low budget FA would be Nate Herbig of the Jets. He's coming off IR with a calf injury but before that he played reasonably well as an occasional starter at center and OG.

Right now IMO Ramsey's trade looks like it will be post June 1 which is the reason for all the releases.

Thomas and Bruss look like the most obvious choices for the Rams at OG with Allen as a stop gap center. Yep this off season will be very interesting to watch and it starts in a couple of days.

Jimmy Lake and Aubrey Pleasant

Well, Lake is not going to be a DB coach. His title is Assistant Head Coach. I find this interesting because Jimmy is a very good defensive coach but was unprepared to be a HC at Washington. Now he will be mentored by one of the best in Sean McVay. I like Jimmy Lake and feel if he can learn from McVay the ins and outs of being a HC in the NFL he could be very good. This will make him a target for NFL teams in a year or two. It could also backstop the Rams should McVay once again get wandering feet. This sounds like Snead/Kronke getting Sean to hand pick an potential successor. It also gives them an option to Morris next year if he gets hired away or fired.

Either way I see Jimmy joining the Rams as a good thing.

Aubrey Pleasant returns as DB coach and passing game coordinator. He was very good when he worked under Wade Phillips, and the DBs played both man and zone concepts. He's another that could take over at DC. I like his return and hope he does a good job. He coached the DBs under Phillips to play aggressively, but Peters and NRC sabotaged Phillips and Pleasant. Both Peters and NRC, like Kendrick were more interested in splash plays and were undisciplined. Kendrick needs to quit going rogue and to give 100% effort 100% of the time. Hopefully, Pleasant can coach up the young players, and get them to contribute at a high level. I still feel Morris is squandering some very important years for Rochell by burying him on the depth chart.

I find it interesting that Pleasant took the blame for the defensive woes whereas Campbell's friend Aaron Glenn who was DC gets a raise. Pleasant was following Glenn's lead but gets the blame? After watching some Lion games IMO it was the scheme as much as the players either inexperience or lack of talent. Either way it's the DC's job to know his roster and play to their strengths.

McVay is doing the same thing with Morris. Blaming the failings of Morris' scheme on his assistants. People wonder about the lack of sack production but don't understand the cause has more to do with Morris' uber soft zone scheme and not AD and Floyd getting old. Also, how is Floyd supposed to get sacks when Morris has him dropping into coverage? They are short handed in pass rushers but drop one of their best into coverage? A big ass DUHHH on that.

I keep hoping for change but to expect it is futile.

Who makes sense for signing Lamar Jackson?

What team is close but needs a big difference maker at QB to change their fortune?

I’ve been thinking about this a bit.
Seattle signed Geno Smith too soon. They can afford to trade the picks and already have $23 million in cap space. He’d be a game changer for the Seahawks. Right now the Seahawks stand to have over $100 million in cap space.

The Jets don’t have the cap space.

The Bears are too far away. Ditto Houston.

I doubt Josh McDaniel is interested in a running QB.

Is anyone thinking a different team should make the move for Lamar?

DEFCON 2: Starting to doubt the next few seasons

I had a chance to catch up on Jourdan's podcast (11 Personnel), and came away unexpectedly distressed.

This is a paraphrasing of what she said over a few sentences from her "lurking as an insider": The Rams will poetically use Jalen Ramsey as the key to this next phase (as he was for this last SB run), as they push the emphasis to offense. They will make up on offense what they lose on defense. McVay will have fun again with the reduced expectations. Take the "over" next season as the games are bound to be high scoring.

Ummm. I have concerns. With a defense that will be a few notches below the bend and break from last season, and the SERIOUS questions we have on offense, how can we bank on the offense getting into any rhythm with the 10 or so snaps they'll get per game?

I'm leaning towards agreeing with the strategy of taking the over, but still think we may be shut out in the process. Do THAT math.

I love McVay, but counting on him coming up with something that will make up for greater defensive shortcomings is beyond unrealistic. I knew exactly what Belicheat was going to do against us defensively in the SB, and look how impressive our offense looked.

Maybe we ARE actually tanking for Caleb? Need to go change my vote...
