I've been a Rams fan for a long time, and I can definitely say I've seen a lot.

Clearly, though... I haven't seen it all.

This offseason was like no other I can recall. I cannot think of another year in which the Rams did less for the immediate success of the team than they did in 2023.

We didn't sign any significant, top-end free agents from outside the team (Ahkello Witherspoon, John Johnson and Demarcus Robinson don't qualify). We didn't sign any of our own free agents to long-term, big money, extensions. We traded away a top player (Jalen Ramsey) for a modest return in what most would call a salary cap move. We just made another trade for a guy (Kevin Dotson) who is a potential starter. Meanwhile, we allowed several FAs to leave, some of whom could have been retained for modest deals. To restock the shelves, we drafted several players, but lacked a first round pick.

We all know the method behind this madness. This is clearly a short-term purge designed to set things up for a 2024 surge. I have no doubt that next offseason we'll be an active player in the FA market, and we'll finally have a first round pick (unless we make a big trade again).

So, yeah... this is different.

Will it work in the short run (meaning we'll be competitive in the 2023) and the long run (meaning we'll contend again in 2024 and beyond)? Who knows?

Glad big Rob was able to hold off being cut to be a captain again

I think it will be Kyren Williams. He's got good not elite speed at 4.54 but he has excellent agility and most of all outstanding field vision (an absolute must for a returner).

Xavier Smith is on the PS as an emergency replacement.

I think by December, Evans will be playing as #2 RB so Williams' impact will be as a return specialist and as a 3rd down back catching passes from Stafford.

I’m thinking mostly here of OL, DL, and Edge. Possibly backup QB.

Rams must make some tricky moves at OL today, one way or another. They’re overstocked there and have to choose paths for several players.

Noteboom. Trade in the works or maybe no takers? Otherwise, swing tackle? I just don’t think he’s credible at RG no matter how much McVay sings that song. If Boom isn’t traded today I think he’s our swing tackle this year and maybe gone in 2024.

Bruss. Time to fish or cut bait with this kid. I favor a release with the intention of bringing him back on the practice squad. Risk is minimal and if some team claims him, so what? Always hurt and struggles at 3 different positions. Alternatively, they could pup or IR him. One way or another he shouldn’t sniff the 53.

Zach Thomas. I fervently hope he makes the 53. He’s versatile and has played well enough to be included in top 9 OL roster. I’m not sure he would clear waivers, so that’s not a viable option.

Allen. There seems to be an outside chance that he might be traded, possibly to Bucs. If not traded today, he’s almost certainly our backup OC.

Rams might put in claim for Grier but it can’t be today. Just spitballing long term options for backup QB. I’m only lukewarm on McCoy, tbh. Grier would solve our backup Q’s ‘problem’ at the very least by allowing Bennett all the time in the world to develop.

There are decisions to be made at both Edge and DL and I honestly don’t know what Rams will decide. What I do know is that no matter who is cut, Rams will be left with apparently inadequate personnel options. If I were Snead, I would be straining to make a trade or pounce on waiver wire for an opportunity to bring in even a journeyman type at either position. I just don’t think we’re good enough at either of those positions.

Bottom line? Rams might work a trade or three today. And their OL strategy might start to come into focus a bit. Also, waiver wire could be far more interesting this year than it’s been for quite some time.

Derek Barnett is, with the Eagles permission, shopping for a trade.

While he’s never lived up to his draft status, he’s had some success and has some potential upside. Is he worth a draft pick? He’s on the final year of his contract ($3.5M), so if we don’t re-sign him, we’d likely get a comp pick back.

Any interest in him, or any other vets who may be hitting the market?

With the new rules of having one gi-normous roster cut, I was wondering how unfair it is for the Rams to wait until the deadline date (in terms of players finding a new team on PS or active 53).

Then it dawned on me. They are probably doing this to be fair to the final cuts.

If you go with the idea that the latest cuts (bubbles) are the best players, might as well let them be on the market the same time as the early cuts. Otherwise, the latest cuts might not have spots since they were filled by earlier cuts (and lesser players potentially).

In any event, just me spouting as I come to terms with the new rules...

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to visit the USS Midway. Really interesting features and history. Highly encourage to visit if you’re interested in military history. Some pictures below and we had a paratrooper demonstration.

Coach McVay has a big heart. A lot of coaches do. The final preseason game is the last time most of those players will ever set foot as a player in an NFL stadium. Their dream will fade and they will try to get jobs in other leagues. Overseas perhaps. Their dreams and chances of making the NFL diminish.
And so coaches give them some time on the field. Something to remember. Something that doesn't involve winning. They just do their best and enjoy their few precious moments.

So when someone says preseason doesn't matter they are talking only about an end result in the regular season that no one can predict.
But to those who will never play under the lights in a packed stadium on Monday Night Football, preseason matters. These young men who have trained and practiced and fought to get to the NFL will now fade into obscurity. We will never know their names. But they will remember. They will remember plenty. And hopefully they find other pursuits.

I wish them well. Thank you for trying out for our Rams.

Under McVay, the Rams are 8-5 against the Seahawks. Even last year, with all our problems, we played them to the wire, losing one game on a last second drive and the other in OT.
