The stats say throw against the Eagles, but the running game could be key.

The Rams’ strength on offense this season has been the passing game, which is averaging 288.8 yards per game, 2nd in the NFL. By contrast, the running game ranks 17th with 104.0 yards per game (and only 3.7 yards per attempt).

The Eagles’ defense is also a bit imbalanced. They are 2nd in the NFL against the run, allowing only 63.0 yards per game (and 3.3 yards per attempt), but 27th against the pass, allowing 260.8 yards per game.
So the Rams should be pass happy this Sunday, right?

Not entirely.

While I think the Rams will likely find their best success throwing the ball, I think they need to mix in the run as well. In addition to the obvious reasons (keeping the defense guessing, eating clock, keeping the Eagles’ offense off the field), there is another reason I think this could be key.

It comes from the Eagles’ injury report. Right now, it looks like they will be missing two of the DTs in their rotation, Fletcher Cox and Marlon Tuipulotu. This is particularly significant when you look at the snap percentages of their DTs:

Fletcher Cox 70.0%
Jalen Carter 47.5%
Milton Williams 41.44%
Jordan Davis 38.8%
Marlon Tuipulotu 12.2%
Kentavius Street 8.8%

Cox’s absence, in particular, and Tuipulotu’s to a lesser extent, will likely mean that Carter, Davis and Williams, who are used to getting a lot of breathers and playing spurts, will have to carry a bigger workload (and it won’t help them that the gametime temperature is forecast to be 88 degrees).

The Rams need to mix in a healthy does of running plays and try to wear down the Eagles DTs. This could give us a real advantage late in the game if its close and they’re a bit gassed. So, while I do expect we’ll pass more than run, a somewhat balanced approach could be a key to winning this game.

McVay's use of KIS and how I think the Rams will beat the Eagles

McVay's play design is outstanding. He's without his star #1 WR Kupp so now what? But he has a rookie who has modeled his game off of Kupp and who has been mentored by him. So Sean simply goes with KIS when designing his plays for the first 4 games. He knows Nacua is seeing the field the same way that Kupp sees it. Stafford has given Puka his visual cues as to what he wants Nacua to do when running his routes.

This breaks down two simplistic plays that worked against the Colts who were playing a lot of zone schemes. It makes the underneath coverage predictable. KIS = Keep It Simple, a very basic but very effective play design to get Nacua, WR1A open. This video is very basic but it highlights some of the things McVay is doing and why this offense hasn't missed a beat. On both plays Jefferson was the setup man. Those who think Jefferson isn't doing anything need to watch this video because it puts everything into perspective.

When the Colts began to react to this KIS style, then McVay unleashes his option routes. If the LBs drop deeper then it will open the underneath routes and the TE (Higbee) comes into play. That is why Higbee had a big game as well. Those option routes work if both the WR and QB see the defense the same. Since Kupp has been mentoring the WRs they are all on the same page. Unknown to a lot of fans is how Staffords communicates with the WRs as to how he is going to throw the pass. If a WR is moving through the zone and Stafford wants him to sit it down at a certain point or continue running through the zone he cues the WR who then responds accordingly. That is why Allen Robinson didn't work out in LA's passing offense. He wasn't here long enough to understand the subtle communication going on during the play.

We saw a bit of that with Mayfield's throw to Jefferson to win the Raider game. They both saw Jefferson's open option down the sideline and the FS shading inside. Once Jefferson beat the CB he knew the ball was coming.

IMO I think we will see Jefferson and Atwell in rotation. When Atwell comes in he will be the Y or Z receiver and Puka will move to X. The success Nacua and Atwell had during Kupp's absence can't be understated. It's what will take this passing offense to another level with Kupp back in the picture.

The offense will win or fail against the Eagles based on the play of the OL. They don't have to be dominant, they simply need to be efficient. The Eagles will likely stuff the box early to stuff the run. If they do the Rams simply need to protect Stafford and he will cut them up. If that happens the Eagles will back off. It's no different than when they played the Niners. The strength of the Eagles' defense is their front 7. If the Rams can't keep them from stopping the run and pass with pressure the game is lost. But if they buy enough time for Stafford the Rams will cut that secondary up and win this game.

This game will be won or lost on how good the OL plays vs the Eagle front 7. Defensively the Rams need to make the Eagles pass to win. The Eagles run to set up the pass. Stuff the run and you then can focus on beating them with tight coverage. This is why I hope Mathis is able to start at DE.

This could be a young Rams team coming of age. Jalen is a good QB who has a very good arm. His weakness is his ability to process the play quickly. There are times he looks hesitant, i.e. uncertain about what he's seeing. Mentally pressure Jalen and prove he can make quick good decisions. Make him unsure of what he's seeing. That's how you beat the Eagles.

If You Had a Dinner Date with Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein...

... and one other significant person in history, what would you discuss? Who are the members of your dream dinner party?
* Pick three deceased people from any point in history
* Say why you would pick them. What topics would you want to discuss?
* Since they are deceased, you could question them about their demise!

Btw...Stu is cooking rocky mountain oysters for the entree..... @RamFan503

As for my dinner companions:
Abraham Lincoln: I've spent a lot of time studying history and loved one book in particular by Doris Kearns Goodwin, "Team of Rivals," I feel as though I know Mr Lincoln from reading that book. I would enjoy to know the man.

Charles Dickens: He was a gifted writer and a very perceptive person.

Mark Twain: Great writer and humorist. I think life turned him into a cynical misanthrope, but extremely funny. I think talking with him might b a little dangerous because he had a sharp tongue to go along with a sharp mind.

So pick your three and tell us why!

Big Ten Football Schedule , 2024-2025

I normally wouldn't have posted anything about the Big Ten on this board , but starting in 2024 , the Big Ten will be adding 4 new west coast schools to the conference . USC , UCLA , Washington and Oregon , and I didn't know if there were any fans of those schools on this board , and would like to know who and where they'll be playing in the next couple years

they actually have the schedule out through like 2028 , but I only posted the next two years , as I don't expect confrence expansion is over yet

Are the Steelers a mess?

@Psycho_X posted this in a different thread but I thought it worth a thread/discussion of its own. What a mess

Randy Gregory Anybody?

It appears the Broncos are gonna start doing some house cleaning, starting with releasing DE/OLB Randy Gregory. Has always been a total head case who loves his weed but he is a proven pass rusher with some success in his career. Would anybody here be on board to signing him if he accepted something barely above league minimum for the rest of the year. He has ALREADY been paid by the Broncos so maybe he could look to jumpstart his career playing with Donald, just like Fowler and Floyd. He might be one toke away from a 400 game suspension but he might be worth a flyer at this point. It's not like we're dripping with extra, proven edge rushers at the moment. Personally, I say put in a call, if he doesn't work out, oh well, no picks given up and wouldn't have much effect on our cap situation.

Flex games

So does anyone know when they can start flexing games? Just curious. pretty much all my friends are cowboys fans and we were really hoping it would get flexed possibly to sunday night or at least the 3:25 slot. Right now there playing in dallas at noon, and I'm not opposed to start drinking in the morning but it would be a whole lot better if this turned into a big game and they moved it to prime time. I'm just not sure what the rules are as far as when they can start flexing games.

Is Asshole Face tanking

We’ve all seen his critique of how poorly he felt that Hackett coached the team. Asshole Face isn’t doing any better. He may be doing worse. His team made Justin Fields and the Bears look like a good team.

We all may hate Asshole Face but he is a good head coach. He has the track record. Did anyone expect the Broncos to be this bad?

I wouldn’t put it past him to tank on purpose to get Caleb Williams. He had a good QB and maybe he doesn’t want to be a head coach without that luxury.

Possible Benefit of Playing Colts Immediately Before Eagles

Here's a small nuance I noticed that could possibly help our defense a little bit against the Eagles this week.

The Colts' head coach is Shane Steichen, who was the offensive coordinator of the Eagles last year. Steichen's replacement in Philadelphia is Brian Johnson, who served under Steichen as the Eagles QB coach in 2021 and 2022. It stands to reason that Johnson is using many of the formations and plays that the Eagles used under Steichen, and that the Colts are now using a similar system.

So, my theory is... the Colts could have been something of a warm-up for the Eagles. From a read and recognition standpoint, the defense may benefit from this schedule.

Of course, the Eagles are far superior to the Colts from a personnel standpoint. All the more reason to latch on to any advantage we can get!
