Game Balls

Who deserves a game ball today?
For me these are the players that really stood out:

-Higbeast!!!!(Higbee). Guy gets open and can catch, When was the last time the Rams had a TE you could say that about? Yea...I dont remember either. Guy is going to be one of Goffs BFF's!!

-Spruce!!! Lets make a 6'1 version of Proehl, Welker and Amendolla shall we? If he doesnt make the roster than something is wrong. He goes all out, can catch better than any wr on our team, and he can run routes. Him and Higbee are gonna be catching balls from Goff for the next decade.

-BamBam!!! He showed why he is our #2 RB. Did a great job and made me not worry about our rb depth.

-Green!!! Dude can run and catch and deserves a spot on the roster. Yes he wasnt great when it came to ST's, but I doubt he really ever had to play on ST's. Give him time and he will improve in that area. He seems to deserve a chance to be the #4 rb.

-Saeu!! Dude was just there on almost every play. Was a very nice surprise. Dont think he makes the team but if he continues this kind of play over the rest of the preseason, there is no way he shouldnt be on the roster.

-Mannion!!! Dude got shit done!! He will be great depth or trade bait in the following years. Glad we have him.

So that is my list, any one you think I might have left out??? Add who you think deserves a game ball and why! Yes it was pre season but still, this is mainly about depth spots and a lot was shown. Let me know your thoughts!!

Opening kick penalties not called

So I just did a rewind on the DVR, did the slow motion thing....

Guess what?

THREE blocks in the back down at the 15-20 yard line that cause the returner to be able to break free.

First, I can't see the numbers too well but one of our players is being rode from behind for 15 yards by either number 81 or 87 from the Cowboys. That's on the far side.

Second, Bradley Marquez (know him by his hair) is totally blocked from behind as he was zeroing in on the returner.

Third was a Ram who was following Marquez and turning inside when he was hit from behind although he may not of had the angle to make a play.

So FREAK you NFL refs! Plain as day!!!

Ridiculously early 53 man roster after 1st preseason game

QB: Jared Goff, Case Keenum, Sean Mannion

'Nuff said. I'd be shocked if Rams go with two QBs with one of them being a rookie.

RB: Todd Gurley, Benny Cunningham, Malcom Brown, Chase Reynolds.

Green looked like he had some stuff and has a shot at the practice squad but don't think he does enough. Reynolds keeps his job. Fans will always discount special teams but this guy gets it done. People think Reynolds loses his job by being supplanted as a RB or a WR but Reynolds will only lose his job when he's supplanted as "best ST player on team."

Oline: Greg Robinson, Rodger Saffold, Tim Barnes, Jamon Brown, Rob Havenstein, Garrett Reynolds, Cody Wichmann, Andrew Donnal, Isaiah Battle, Eric Kush

Does Battle actually beat out Williams at tackle, not sure? Did Donnal look okay at RT today?? I could actually see Rams going with 8 here with Battle getting the boot to practice squad but they may likely carry 9 again due to Havenstein's injury.

WR: Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt, Bradley Marquez, Pharoh Cooper, Nelson Spruce, Brian Quick

Thomas was underwhelming today. Quick proves that his blocking on the edge in big formations is worth it.

TE: Lance Kendricks, Cory Harkey, Tyler Higbee

Hemmingway goes to the practice squad.

Dline: Robert Quinn, William Hayes, Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, Quinton Coples, Eugene Sims, Ethan Westbrooks, Dominique Easley, Ian Seau

Ian Seau has a solid chance to unseat Longacre here.

LBs: Alec Ogletree, Mark Barron, Akeem Ayers, Bryce Hager, Cameron Lynch, Josh Forrest

One of the hardest parts was figuring out if one of the last guys on the roster was going to be a LB, DL, WR. Rams have gone light here before but keep Forrest for depth.

CBs: Trumaine Johnson, E.J. Gaines, Lamarcus Joyner, Coty Sensabaugh, Marcus Roberson

Maybe Troy Hill pushes Roberson and he had his moments but seems like an uphill climb. Practice squad guy. Coty Sensabum may prove he's a liability but he's not going anywhere. *Sigh*

SAFTIES: T.J. McDonald, Maurice Alexander, Cody Davis, Christian Bryant

Brian Randolph's injury probably will mean he won't make it even if he returns soon as lost reps will put him in a tough spot. The number's don't play out. CD and CB aren't great so we pray that TJ and Mo don't get injured.

SPECIALISTS: Greg Zuerlein, K; Johnny Hekker, P; Jake McQuaide, LS

Nothing to see here.

Goff Observations

First of all, I know it is way too early and way too little reps to get much of a read but it's Week 1 of Preseason, so entertain me.

That being said, a few observations from Goff's first NFL game.

1. He was taking way too long to process the play on his first drive. We can blame the OLine for that INT but in my opinion, that's on him. Took too long before deciding to throw there.

2. He showed some balls on his second (and last) drive. Made quicker decisions and threw some strikes with perfect accuracy.

3. He looked to be in command of the offense. On one play, he was yelling at a receiver to get his butt on the other side of the field. On another play, he audibled to a pass play and completed a nice pass to Higbee.

4. Already seeing some really nice chemistry with Higbee. Higbee was definitely the brightest spot in this game for the Rams.

5. That throw to Cooper was beautiful. Wasn't a perfect spiral but it hit him right on the hands. He has to catch that.

6. Not Goff related but GRob looked pretty solid in the limited time he was out there. Didn't make an glaring errors. We really need him to be a good LT if we are going to avoid being some 7-9 BS.

7. Lastly, our WR's are horrible. Very disheartening performance. Completely unacceptable.

All in all, it's preseason. I know some people were pissed that we didn't practice our 2 minute drill with Goff, but I actually agree with the decision. No reason to reveal our playbook in that position. Or to put Goff in danger especially when he's being protected by our 2nd string Oline.

RamBalls camp report

Well to start, my wife took some video and lots of pictures but I am not able to put them on my computer, vids to large to send and I havent been able to get pictures to show up in my posts.

This is my memories from Aug 6,8 and 9.
Dline seems to be going through the motions in team drills, DBs have good coverage forcing Keenum and Goff to hold the ball too long, most pass plays would have been sacks.

Oline opened up some run lanes, but as mentioned above, did not create a good pocket for any of QBs, I'm hoping it was due to AD the practice wrecker and his buddies and not a sign of the Oline being a weakness.

On Aug 8, Mannion IMO had a better day than either Keenum or Goff, CK and JG did move the ball, but took way too long to get rid of the ball. Mannion got rid of the ball quicker and pushed it down the field more than the other 2.

Higbeast is gonna be the anti-Jared Cook. He has great hands and looks like he may be good after the catch as well, very strong. His blocking has room to improve of course that can be said for any TE that trys to block Quinn or any other DE on the Rams roster.
Kendricks wont have to be the recieving TE, due to Higbeast, but LK will keep the Ds honest, he can block in the run game or get open in the pass game.
Harkey is a big dude and looks good also, like LK he can block and catch.

Spruce has very good hands also, I hope there is a way to keep him on the 53, there are going to be some hard decisions at WR come cut time.
TA is electric, no surprise here but I cant skip him. TA took a short pass in the scrimage and made 2 moves and was gone, there is no angle to counter his speed, appears he has a burst and just plays with the defenders. They think they have the angle and he just blows by them, very fun to watch in person.
Cooper looks like he will be a fan favorite very soon, good hands and looks like a thicker TA, maybe not as fast, but plenty fast enough.
Quick looked good, but inconsistency is still a problem with him as is ball security.
Britt looks good, but had some frustrating drops.
Britt and TA are both always helping the youngsters, giving tips and pumping them up.
Duke Williams reminds me of a poor mans A Boldin, but much faster. He is a large young man. I read mixed reports on him before I got down there, but he seemed to have good hands when I watched him.
Mike Thomas also looked good, the Rams definitely went after guys that can catch this off season.

There is gonna be a tough cut at RB Gurley and Benny are safe but after that it gets interesting Aaron Green and Malcom Brown both look good and Chase Reynolds seems to be made of glue, no matter who the Rams bring in CR seems to stick.
Gurley is damn fast for such a big young man, on many runs it looked like the D would get him in the backfield, then he hit the jets and was turning the corner, and he doesnt need much room in the middle to find a crack and be 10-15 yards downfield before anyone has a chance to try and get him.
Benny looks like he turned some of that baby fat into solid muscle, and has very good feet in traffic, always pumping his legs and fighting for extra yards.
AG is fast and makes people miss, better hands than MB.
MB looked good on runs, but dropped a couple passes. one of which was a great pass on a wheel route from Mannion that would have gone for a TD as MB was behind the entire D.

To steal a line from coach Wauffle, the Dline is going to fuck people up. I am looking forward to seeing them go against the Dallas Oline.

I like Ogletree at MLB, he was getting in on a lot of the runs, seemed to shed blockers better than he did in the past and damn is he fast.

I think the secondary will be fine if not better than last year. A lot of tight coverage forced the QBs to hold the ball, allowing the Dline to do its job.
Tru and TJ McDonald look to be the leaders of this group and are showing the younger guys how DBs should play, very physical, they both want to destroy ball carriers/recievers.
Joyner looks good as the slot cover man, he also likes to hit.
Tru22 by my count led the D in ints, he didnt care who was throwing the ball he picked it.

My overall impression of the team is that Fisher is right anything less than 11 or 12 wins is BULLSHIT! There is a lot of talent on this team at every level on D and at all the skill positions on O. I dont think it would be fair to the Oline to judge them based off of camp, the Dline is dominant and it looked like both lines were trying to keep each other healthy. Did see 1 fight between O and D but couldnt see who it was.

I'm sure more will come to me as I read on, I will add anything that comes to me in whatever thread jogs my memory.

Game Day Menu

My wife didn't realize today was game day - even though I've brought it up 6-7 times this week. As a result, we were looking at a nice football Kale Salad this evening. Fortunately, as soon as she realized today was game day - and a quick grocery run later - now we are looking at buffalo chicken sliders, steakburger sliders, and scratch made margaritas. Feels much more like football food. If I'm not getting fatter, I just don't feel like I'm doing football right.

What's on your menu?

Rams want ball in Austin's hands more often

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/r...n-austins-hands-more-hes-an-explosive-player/

Prior to last season, Rams coach Jeff Fisher announced that he was making it a priority to get Tavon Austin more involved in the offense. "There's no doubt in my mind that his production level should increase," he said at the time, also noting, "This potentially could be a breakout year for him. Because he's got the potential to win outside and inside."

Austin did wind up having the most productive season of his NFL career last season. He caught 52 passes for 473 yards and five touchdowns, adding 52 carries for 434 yards and another four scores. In all, his 104 touches went for 907 yards and nine touchdowns.

On a per-touch basis, he actually was not as efficient as he'd been through his first two NFL seasons. Austin averaged 8.72 yards per touch in 2015, down from 8.92 in 2013 and 2014 combined. Still, getting the ball in his hands more often resulted in his greatest impact to date.

Now, Fisher wants to get Austin even more involved. He said in June that he expects Austin to crack 100 catches in 2016. Considering Austin has 123 total catches across his first three seasons, that'd be quite a leap in production. It's also worth noting that Austin would need 163 targets to get to the 100-catch mark, based on his current 61.5 percent catch rate in his career. His career high is 87, set last year.

Still, Fisher doubled down this week on his insistence that Austin will have a huge year. Why? Well, mostly because he's fast.

"He's got two speeds," Fisher said, per ESPN.com, which noted that the team is trying to open up its offense in order to utilize Austin's skill set more fully. "One's fast and the other is sleep."

I'm not sure what that means, but Fisher definitely sounds excited about Austin yet again. "A really smart player," Fisher called him. "Very exciting, explosive player. Loves to play and compete."

Austin, meanwhile, is excited to take on a bigger role. "I appreciate it, just for what I've been through," he said. "It's only going to get better for me. I'm about the wins and any time I get to touch the ball, hopefully I can make something good happen with it."

The Rams have been fairly mediocre thus far during Austin's career, but maybe making a concerted effort to get the ball into his hands will help them take a step forward. They're going to need somebody other than Todd Gurley to make things happen offensively, after all

Rams preseason games mean everything to UDFA's like running back Aaron Green

Rams' preseason games mean everything to undrafted free agents like running back Aaron Green

By RICH HAMMOND / STAFF WRITER

IRVINE – In the early-evening hours Saturday, when Rams starters relax on the sideline during the second half and even diehard fans reach for the remote control, Aaron Green will be running for his football life.

The Rams’ preseason opener against Dallas doesn’t mean the same to everyone. For the (possible sellout) crowd at the Coliseum, it’s the symbolic return of NFL football for the first time in 22 years. For veteran players, it’s a low-key tune-up game. For those on the fringes of the roster, it’s a night of survival.

The Rams have 89 players in training camp, and 53 will make the season-opening roster. That’s brutal math, and the four preseason games present the best opportunities for players to stand out to coaches.

After the starters play a handful of series against the Cowboys, most of the game will be contested by little-known rookies such as Green, who seemingly is in a perilous position. Last year, the Rams kept five running backs coming out of training camp. Green might be running back No. 5 or No. 6 at this point.

“There’s not anxiety at all,” Green said this week. “I really feel like I have ice water in my veins. That’s why I’m able to come out here and make plays. There’s no reason to be nervous when you’re prepared and ready. I’ve waited my whole life for this opportunity, and I’m here and enjoying the ride.”

First roster cuts, which will take the Rams down to 75 players, don’t have to be completed until Aug. 30, but players – particularly rookies – can be released at any point, so there’s no margin for error.

A big run, a key kickoff-return hit or, on the other hand, a missed tackle in a nationally televised preseason game could swing the momentum for a young player, and that’s why Green is one to watch.

NFL teams made 253 picks at this year’s draft, and Green’s phone didn’t ring. In the view of scouts, Green, listed at 5-foot-11, 201 pounds, wasn’t strong enough to be a between-the-tackles runner and went down too easily upon first contact.

Still, Green’s 1,272-yard senior season at TCU made him an intriguing back, and shortly after the draft, the Rams signed Green as a free agent.

That’s a contract with very few strings attached, with no promises. Green earned the right to show up at rookie mini-camp in May, at OTA practices in June and training-camp practices in July and August. That’s it. Anything else would have to be earned.

“You definitely remember all the people drafted ahead of you and all the running backs, especially,” Green said. “But now, none of that matters. When the smoke clears, I’ve just got to make sure I’m here.”

Typically, the odds are long. Last year, the Rams signed 15 undrafted players and only two – linebacker Cameron Lynch and receiver Bradley Marquez – made the opening-week 53-man roster. Five other players were signed to the practice squad and eight were released during training camp.

Lynch ended up playing all 16 games last season, mostly in a special-teams role, and this week he instantly recalled his first preseason snap of 2015. The Rams sent him out on a fourth down and asked him to chase down then-Raiders returner Trent Richardson. Lynch had a bit of anxiety.

“My legs were so heavy,” Lynch said. “After a while you settle down and get into a flow and you have so much excitement and so much pent-up energy. It’s a good feeling. I’m excited for the young guys.”

Who will stand out? There’s a fierce competition ongoing among rookie receivers, given that the Rams already return Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt, Brian Quick and Bradley Marquez.

Pharoh Cooper, this year’s fourth-round pick, seemingly is guaranteed a spot, so that leaves four significant undrafted free agents – Paul McRoberts, Nelson Spruce, Mike Thomas and Duke Williams – fighting perhaps to unseat Quick or Marquez or to land a spot on the Rams’ 10-player practice squad.

For a player such as Spruce, who has displayed great hands in camp, it’s a time for excitement, eagerness and anxiety.

“All of it,” Spruce said. “It’s our first NFL game. Camp and OTAs and practice is a big part of it, but ultimately it’s what you do in the games that is going to distinguish you from the rest. For me, it’s a huge day and I’m really looking forward to it.”

So is Green, and it will be fascinating to see how Coach Jeff Fisher divides carries against Dallas.

Todd Gurley isn’t expected to get much work, and with last year’s primary backup, Tre Mason, involved in a bizarre legal situation (and not in camp), Benny Cunningham has slid into the No. 2 spot.

After that, there’s opportunity. Green, Malcolm Brown, Terrence Magee and Chase Reynolds all can contribute on special teams, but it’s likely that only two or three of them will make the Rams’ final cut.

A fumble would be disastrous. A touchdown would be huge. A big special-teams block could turn some heads. Throughout the first two weeks of camp, these young players have been attempting to make an impression, but now things change.

“The players understand that there’s an intensity level on the practice field,” Fisher said, “and it ratchets up a notch before preseason games, especially on special teams, because everybody that’s covering a kick or returning a kick is trying to make the football team. It’s a different deal.”

Rams Set to Take On Cowboys for First Preseason Game

Myles Simmons

It is preseason, but NFL football in Los Angeles will kick off for the first time in two decades Saturday evening when the Rams take on the Cowboys.

Through about two weeks of training camp, Los Angeles has been making steady progress, particularly when it comes to the quarterback position. While Case Keenum will be the starter, No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff should get plenty of playing time in his first live NFL action.

“I feel good, I feel ready,” Goff said. “Obviously, [it’s] my first NFL game. I’m going to try and go out there and treat it like every other game I’ve ever played in my life, and have fun, execute, enjoy my time, and do the best I can.”

“We want him just to relax Saturday night,” offensive coordinator Rob Boras said. “It’s just kind of like when we started OTAs and we started training camp, everybody gets on edge — there’s a lot of expectations. The more that he can go out there and just settle in, like we saw him settle in at the Coliseum during the family day, he’s going to play confident.”

Though he is notable, Goff is certainly not the only rookie who will be making contributions on Saturday night. Fourth-round picks Tyler Higbee and Pharoh Cooper appear poised to begin making their mark this week. Both have been seeing time in camp with the first-team offense, which should translate into plenty of snaps versus Dallas.

“Tyler has the potential to play very, very early for us and be a big time part of our offense,” head coach Jeff Fisher said of Higbee, later adding that the club is expecting Cooper “to be a productive player inside. I think you will see a lot of plays out of him this preseason.”

All starters will likely play just two to three series in Saturday’s contest, but for some that’s enough. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald is one of those players. He’s been a “practice wrecker” throughout camp, and is looking forward to getting his feet wet with a little on-field time once again.

“Get back out there and get a little feel for the game, speed of the game, and get back into things,” Donald said. “We’ve been going against each other for a while, so it’s going to be good to go up against somebody else.”

According to Fisher, Donald is likely not the only Ram who feels that way.

“Our interior center and two guards have just about had enough of Aaron Donald,” the head coach joked. “They’re looking forward to lining up against someone else.”

An undoubtedly historic occasion at one of the nation’s most storied sports venues, the Rams are expecting a particularly large crowd. After witnessing a nice crowd for Family Day last week, word has gotten around that this week’s attendance is expected to be high.

“It’s definitely going to be a big game,” wide receiver Tavon Austin said. “One thing I know — our side is definitely going to bring it. And we’ll see from there.”

For T.J. McDonald, Saturday will represent a homecoming as the safety played his college ball in the stadium as a USC Trojan.

“Just to be in the Coliseum again in this capacity is something special,” McDonald said, “and I’m excited for it.”

But when it comes to the big crowd, Fisher had one request for L.A. Rams fans at his Thursday press conference.

“I want them to go home having lost their voices,” Fisher said. “We want to hear them. We need that ‘12th man.’ If they go home and they’ve lost their voices, they did their job.”

Kickoff at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is scheduled for 5 p.m. PDT. The game will be televised on ESPN and simulcast on ABC 7.

Ticket available! Semi-Free :)

Well... A dramatic turn of events. My buddies wife, who was our driver, has bailed on the game tomorrow. SO!!! I have a ticket available, 11H row 92. The ticket is free.... BUT...(there's always a but) We now have an extra ticket, and also need a driver. I live in Huntington Beach, Of course I can drive too the game, but looking for someone to drive us, in my truck, home. With the ticket comes the following...

**Game ticket
**Lot 6 Tailgate party - Food and drinks inc.

We will leave my place in HB at 10:30, pick up my buddy in Torrance, then to the Stadium. Lot opens at 12, we'd like to be there shortly after. We have a great group of guys (23 of us), coworkers, for the tailgate. If your interested, PM me!! Gonna be a blast!

So...the frozen tundra of the iconic

Lambeau field. Like it's some kind of shrine.

Was there in 2008. Very nice stadium, very cool fans, tailgating was awesome, and the Rams won.

It was built in 1956.

The LA Coliseum was built in 1923, where I saw my first Rams game v Unitas's Colts 58 years ago, with Wade and Arnett.

I guarantee you, I am going to get goosebumps tomorrow when I enter that arena.

Cannot fucking wait.

Projecting Jared GOFF's Preseason & 2016 Regular Season Stats

Projecting Jared GOFF's Preseason & 2016 Regular Season Stats

feature_presentation.gif

As we follow Jared Goff's rookie preseason and his first NFL regular season, I listed the statistics (minus rushing) for all of the QB's drafted from 2012 through 2015. I only listed the QB's (9 total) that played in the Regular Season their rookie year and are still the Projected Starters for the 2016 season.

I thought this would be a good barometer for comparing and tracking Goff's progress and maybe give a glimpse of possibly what to expect from him in the regular season. All eyes are about to be on him as he gets ready to perform in his first NFL preseason game Saturday vs the Cowboys at the LA Coliseum.

Obviously for all rookie QB's in their first NFL season, the talent level & supporting cast of the team that drafted them, along with the Offensive Scheme and pedigree of their coaching, surely played a Large Part in their rookie development and overall statistics.

As you look over each QB's Preseason stats by individual games, you can see that some of the rookie QB's for various reasons, were given more snaps and had more pass attempts. Regardless of their preseason stats, it was their Regular season statistics that Jared Goff will be compared to at the end of his 2016 campaign.

Summary: When you look at each rookie QB's individual preseason games, for various reasons (total snaps, injury prevention etc) some of the QB's were allowed to throw the ball 15-20 times, while others had only 12 or less passing attempts.

If Goff gets 2 quarters of playing time vs the Cowboys he might get 15 or more passing attempts in his debut depending on the circumstances of the game. As you all know, various factors will determine how many snaps and pass attempts Fisher allows before the rookies evening is done.

For entertainment purposes, I thought this would be a be a good archive and stats reference to use as we scrutinize Jared Goff's rookie season.

I'm curious to know if anyone of you faithful Rams fans have an estimated guess of which of the above listed QB's Goff's Regular Season Stats might be similar with, assuming he starts all or most of 2016 season?

I would appreciate your educated opinions/estimations

Thanks for observing, Florida
