Wade Phillips eager to work for McVay with Rams

The Rams coach detailed how he recruited Wade Phillips away from Denver, his philosophy as a young coach, who he called first when he got the job and reflects on his mentor Jon Gruden. He talks with Mike Florio.

Watch McVay Interview
Liked listening to McVay, he give a really nice interview! (y):D It would have been a lot better IF Florio where not part of it!! He was obviously trying to ask Trap Questions! But McVay didn't Fall into his Traps!!(y);):yess:

Can you win with an Alex Smith type QB?

ATL gained about 600 more yards than DAL this year.

ATL averages just over a TD per game more than DAL and about 70 yards more in the passing game.

Against essentially the same quality of opponents.

ATL is head and shoulders better than DAL on offense.

And in terms of who's offense is better between Dallas' and Atlanta's, I'll take Atlanta's- more yardage, more points, less turnovers. They scored the 7th most points in NFL history, 71 points more than the next best team this year [New Orleans]. They scored 119 more points than Dallas and 108 more points than GB.
I'll agree that Kyle Shanahan has done a remarkable job. Dude just knows how to move the ball. Ryan is playing better than ever. I'll still take the balance of Dallas. In any other year, this team would be playing today. Aaron Rodgers has been on fire. The way he can control the game from the offensive end.
The major difference in the Cowboys and Atlanta happens to be the offensive line which allows balance to the Dallas team. TOP. Ball control.
I expect a couple of key turnovers from Ryan today. Probably a few from New England too.

River's McVay/Wade Mock 2.0 ... One trade

We are all welcome to our opinions, and when I see a mock that hits on everything and every one, i'll retire from these attempts.

In your first post on this thread you mention everything looked good other than a CB you didn't particularly care for, now there are up to 10 players who won't make the roster in your opinion. So who are the 10 guys you see as at risk, other than the 6'th or 7'th rounders who are always a bit risky to make most any team ?

I'm saying that there are 5-10 players on your depth chart who won't make the roster (guys like Aaron Green, Paul McRoberts, Darrell Williams, etc.). The point there is that we could sign more veteran depth players. I think it's a good idea to make young players beat out veteran depth. I'd rather not be forced to start random rookie UDFAs again.

Gus Bradley to LA... Chargers

Wade has a decade left for coaching if he wants to keep coaching.

I don't believe Wade will be coaching until he's 80, I strongly believe this will be his last contract, three years and then to ride off into the sunset. One thing nobody mentioned was that Phillips daughter lives in Southern, CA., not that matters to how long he will coach, but just shocked nobody brought that up and did somewhat factor in to his decision.

Wade is not built like Dick Labeau who is 79 and is in incredible shape, but I would even settle for him to stay until he's 75 and then past the torch to another and hopefully it's not Joe Barry.

It's not perfect, but it's a start (Mock draft)

I appreciate that you are being realistic. I do like the dream mocks but these realistic ones where we don't plug all holes are worth sketching out.

If I am Mcvay the first thing I am doing is demoting Grob to the bench. No matter what we scheme up, it's going to be middle school until our 5 up front can win their battles consistently. Grob might get there one day, but right now he is getting regularly beaten and killing any attempt at sustaining drives. It's not fair to the team or the fan base to continue on with below average lineman.

If we want our offense to come out with a bang in 2017, and it CAN happen, We have to put together 5 guys that can take over the game and own their opponent across from them.

I like that you have 4 answers on the oline but want LT solved.

Coaching Success: A moving scale?

College? This season??

Yes and yes.

Now can he harness it and become a premier NFL quarterback? That is what's yet to be proven.

Jon Gruden (whom I've seen comparisons to) took 5 seasons to get to a SB, although it would have only been 4 had the "tuck rule" not been implemented...
2 .500 seasons, then 12-4.
Is that a trajectory you see as fair?
Not disagreeing with you, seems reasonable to me

A fair trajectory? Absolutely. Having said that, I truly expect McVay to be successful. Very successful.

8to12 Let's make a deal Mock

@jrry32, thank you for taking the time to read and acknowledging the work on my Mock. Your thoughts are much appreciated. My responses below .....

1) Cuts: I see your point about Donnal and Brown being cheap. I would take your advice and bring Brown to Camp and let him compete. However, after seeing the team alot up close this past year, I'm not bringing Donnal back for the pure reason he is just not good enough. He doesn't have a large enough base for Guard and he lacks strength for the inside, and his feet are too slow to play Tackle. Regarding Gaines, I think he's average. Considering the FA acquisitions I had in my Mock, and my preference for "long" CB's, he would be a cut at some point.

I agree about Donnal, but you bring him into camp.

You don't cut Gaines. He's on a 6th round pick contract. He's great depth to have. I don't want to see guys like Mike Jordan and Troy Hill in the game again when we suffer injuries.

2) Trades: I'm not opinionated on it other than to say that, IMO, Quinn has peaked. I don't think he will ever get back to where he was a couple of seasons ago. In comparison, Chandler Jones seems to be reaching his full potential.

Quinn is a better player than Jones when healthy. But I understand the concerns about health. If I were to trade Quinn, though, I'm not accepting less than mid-first round value. Second round value for a pass rusher like Quinn is nowhere near enough for me to even ponder it.

3) Restructuring: your point is well taken. I did not put enough though into it. I was shooting for the Moon with all my FA acquisitions and thought I would have to move some money around to accommodate.

I doubt it. Trading Austin and Quinn opens up a lot of money (if we trade Austin before his roster bonus is paid).

4) Draft: I agree, you can probably do better at the top of the Second for just a pure CB. However, It's LA, Stan needs players to help put people in the seats and Adoree is one of those players.
Regarding Reddick, I see him being a key figure in Phillip's system as a stand up End. Last, Avery Gennesy ..... are you sure you're not thinking of another player? I've checked about 6 different sites and he is listed at 6'5", between 305 and 310 lbs. And, per Richmond Webb, "...Great feet and long arms.."

You put butts in the seats by winning. You win by drafting the best players. Adoree Jackson shouldn't be our pick for novelty reasons.

Reddick doesn't have the length or power game to be an impact NFL rusher imo.

Avery Gennesy is at the Shrine Game, here are the measurements:

http://images.performgroup.com/di/l...7_1krndpxeyq4jyz8dp023d10s8.png?t=-1378677759
As you can see, Gennesy measured in at 6'3" 308 with 33 inch arms and 8.75 inch hands. That's too small to play OT, especially with his functional strength issues. My bet is that he's drafted by a ZBS team to play OG.

McDaniels/Cable bow out of 49ers coaching search/Kyle Shanahan to be offered job

This is great to watch. I love seeing more GMs back out of the SF job, it's beautiful.

And tbh while I have enormous respect for Shanahan it's not like the guy comes without questions. For all the flak the Rams have gotten for going with a 30 year old, he at least doesn't have a history of problems with others, from coaches to players. Kyle does have some flags for concern, so if he does have thin skin and/or issues working with some types it could make for even better drama when he finds himself being questioned by York's punk @$$.

At least that's my hope. I don't like seeing a mind like his going to SF, so the best possibility for us is that he's not ready and York shows him the door in a year or two.

NFL Coaches Yell At Refs Because It Freakin’ Works

So some of you know I ref HS ball, when home. I can see this happening. I normally work one of the sidelines, sometimes the coaches are in my ear the whole game, those guys I ignore completely. Some coaches are masters at referee manipulation and I am sure I've fallen victim to it.

It's hard to not doubt yourself when the entire crowd is freaking out about something that you may have missed. This happens a lot with PI, but they don't know the rules. They also don't understand rules vs. phylosophy.

Though we don't get much crowd noise, it is key to stay focused and call only what you are 100% sure you see not what the crowd sees. (they actually have a better view than I do, but they don't know the rules, so it's advantage me)

I had a ref in high school make fun of me for swearing so much. Lol!

Greg Olson QB Coach

Yeah the Bills have had a ton of turnover, and the Rams haven't. I could see why he'd choose the QB coach postion in a stable environment over the OC position in a tumultuous one
I don't know why anyone would take that 9er job if they have alternatives

I'm in Niner country & The fans are reallly down on the owner.

I think they have been spoiled during Harbaughs time. The owner learned a big lessen ?? My guess.

I think they have a nice young core of players. 12 draft picks & the most salary cap in NFL ?

I think Kyle Shannahan has a chance to structure the team to his liking & start fresh. I also guess he will bring in the GM in Atlanta (KC,NE) .
