Rams hope exploiting mismatches springs Todd Gurley in 2017

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Todd Gurley was easy to find last season: usually buried under the opposition a few yards ahead of the line of scrimmage. New Rams head coach Sean McVay is on a mission to make Gurley more difficult to locate.

The third-year running back moved around the offensive formation throughout the first day of Rams minicamp Tuesday. Occasionally, he lined up wide outside two receivers. On another snap, he motioned from out wide into the backfield before running a route in the other direction. He saw a lot of targets from quarterback Jared Goff in the passing game, often appearing to be the primary read.

A talented running back making noise as a receiver isn't revolutionary in the year 2017, but the Rams did not run a modern offense last season, when Gurley picked up a paltry 3.2 yards per carry. McVay spoke Tuesday about defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' standout ability to create mismatches, a trait that McVay shares. He wants to put his Rams players in better matchups than they were in a year ago. Gurley is doing his best to put last season behind him, even if the personal struggles of the former Offensive Rookie of the Year remain a sore spot.

"4-12 is definitely not the season anyone wants. I don't really care about what I do individually," Gurley said.

While that's not necessarily what Gurley's prospective fantasy football owners want to hear, he should be in a better position to succeed with a more flexible offense. The hope is that the Rams' young cornerstones have grown up. Goff said that he and Gurley now have a better understanding about their roles and responsibilities on the team. Goff stressed the importance of being able to get past a bad play in practice or in games.

"The faster you can get over something like that, the better you are," Goff said.

He may as well have been talking about the entire Rams 2016 season.......

What amazed me about Gabriel, was how long he played after leaving the Rams. Back then I was a kid in Whittier, and when he left the Rams it was as if he had died to me, because I only cared about the Rams and the teams playing the Rams. I probably remember Hadl, Harris, Namath, Haden, and Ferragamo back then than Roman Gabriel...

It's a good teaching moment and an excellent moment to push the responsibility onto Goff. Let Goff develop that confidence

Well Fisher the jerk did a fake punt against Niners the last game of 2015.

They messed it up & then he went for it again. Everyone saw it coming.
The Rams would have been better off just letting Hekker line up in shot gun formation & then if not there quick pouch punt.

MB was listed for several seasons as being approx. 326 pounds.....currently he is listed @ 302 pounds. You think that correct or a mistake? I also see where DE Ethan Westbrooks is listed as being 6-4 283 pounds. Where last season he was listed in the 260 plus range. I see NT Mike Purcell is listed as 6-3 328 pounds.

this is hilarious but despite Favre not knowing the lineups, he still knew how to see the field and that's where his talent came from. He might not know what the defensive lineup was, but he still knew who was going to be open and knew how to extend the play.

I wouldn't go to the funeral of someone that I hated, unless it was direct family. That includes co-workers, former friends, parents of in-laws, and especially neighbors. The rift must have been big.

That doesn't mean Bradshaw isn't an ass though.

So true as George Allen & Chuck Knox were snake bitten to post the least...Allen did finally make it to a Super Bowl, however, Knox rebuilt a couple of downtrodden programs after leaving the Rams in Buffalo & Seattle, but still could never get to the big dance.

Always seemed the Rams got hosed with playoff games when the home playoff team was on a rotational bases in 67 beating the Packers only having to play them in Green Bay and losing 28-7 and then in 1973 after beating the Cowboys in October playing in the playoffs in Dallas and losing 27-16.

After that year the NFL went with record to determine who hosted playoff games and I felt in 1975 the Rams had finally had the team to get to the Super Bowl and after the Hail Mary Pass to propel Dallas over Minnesota, it guaranteed a home playoff game for the Rams for the NFC Championship Game and the Cowboys crushed the Rams 37-7 and sent a nine year old to bed in tears and IMHO, Chuck Knox never recovered from that loss going with a rusty James Harris over a hot Ron Jaworski.

Well, I'm not sure about the media over analyzing, it's the only body of work they have to go on, however, the media with the exception of Southern California seems to be missing the obstacles of last season as well.

Good question, would love to know the answer here. Training camp is a different animal. This time of year, OTA's etc. I think the annual salary is broken down to weekly game checks. But before?
Pretty sure the money paid to players during mandatory TC is actually above and beyond their annual salary
