Matt Williamson Prediction (Rams v Redskins)

Hey Jrry, this is what I got in response from a Skins guy:

DE: Stacy McGee - Stops the run, no pass rush
NT: Ziggy Hood - Played well last week, coached up by Tomsula who knows how to develop a nose
DE: Jonathan Allen - Talented rookie. Good against the run and can pass rush.
OLB: Ryan Kerrigan - Very good player. Inconsistent run stopper.
ILB: Mason Foster - Average to above average. Good run stuffer.
ILB: Zach Brown - Pro bowler last year, looked that way too in game 1. Great run stuffer.
OLB: Preston Smith - Good to very good rookie year. Mediocre 2nd year. Looked good last week.
CB: Josh Norman - Great player
CB: Bashaud Breeland - Good player who has a bad year last season, looked good in week 1. Press corner, mostly.
FS: D.J. Swearinger - Good last year; bad before that, leader of this defense. Was great in camp, good in week 1.
SS: DeShazorEverett - Uncertain. Hits hard but still learning the position -- can get out of position.

Edit: this isn't me being a homer, I really like the defensive personnel this season. They stunk last year. Hood seems transformed at the nose (or at least it looks that way from game 1). The dude was a first rounder so he isn't devoid of talent. Zach Brown was all over the field against the Eagles. The dude is fast and can tackle. Breeland was a good corner for his career and had a bad season out of nowhere last year but looked sharp on Sunday. Fuller was a train wreck his first year at nickel corner. But he was very good in camp and very good in game 1. Preston Smith looked like an emerging star in his rookie year. Got 8 sacks in limited play. Last year he only had 4.5 sacks. He slimmed down and looked better this camp, played well and got a sack in week 1. They lost last week because of the offense as opposed to defense. That's a 180 from last season. Though the personnel is significantly different this season.

I'd say the weakness of the unit is Everett is a work in progress. The D line doesn't really bring much pass rush yet. It looks like it can stop the run but they weren't really up against a stiff running attack to be tested. Allen and Ioannidis have the potential to bring some pressure up the middle judging by camp and preseason. I don't think the front 7 is great at dropping in coverage and playing zone.

The strength is (knock on wood) the secondary. Zach Brown up the middle. And the edge pass rush. Kerrigan, Preston, Galette, Anderson. Galette looked good in limited snaps last Sunday, he is supposed to play more. He had a sack nullified by a penalty last Sunday.

While I'm sure he knows his team better than I do, the Redskins fans I've spoken with have tended to opine that their defense lacks talent. I have a feeling he's being a bit optimistic, like all of us are, with his favorite team. I'm sure we're overly optimistic about the Rams.

Everyone talking about the Offense

They did give up some big plays in the first quarter. Early second quarter Joyner's deflection saved another one when the game was still close. That ball was underthrown. Could have been trouble had been a little out in front of the WR. Seemed to be some big holes in the secondary. They are going to need a better pass rush to keep Cousins off balance. He looked bad against the Eagles but, they got pressure on him. Donald should help with pressure. The jury is still out for me on the defense. Keeping the Skins out of the end zone when they move the ball will be the difference.

One thing that I keep mentioning, though, that impressed me the most about the Rams in week one is every time the Colts got something going the team responded, in all three phases. It's been a loooong time since I've seen that man. Like back in '99 or '01 long.

So if that resilience sticks around just watch out league. Because this team has plenty of talent.

McVay Poll ...

Also, polling a coach rating after one game is about as useless as those power rankings.

I agree! Why even bother..........

Let's talk after the cowboys game.

This is the game I have circled. They need momentum going back home to play the Seahawks so a win in Dallas would be huge. It's going to be a big test on defense and offense. The Rams have an edge on ST's so that may be the unit that tips the scales that Sunday. If they beat the Cowboys two things will happen.

1. The media will be all over the Rams and McVay's jocks.

2. @Rynie will say the refs gave it to the Rams.

When a team beats a team they SHOULD, in the fashion they did, they should get credit top to bottom.

Imagine had the game been closer, or even got an L the reactions.

I don't care who the other team is, I won't ever downplay wins.

Well said, good point. They beat the hell out of a bad team, which is what good teams usually do. It's a W and they all count the same at the end of the year but your point of observing HOW they got the W is perfectly sensible. Had this been a 12-10 game that would be a different story.

Guys In Shorts: Rams Show 2017 Week 1 vs Colts

Some novices just can't seem to root for their own team
huh?!?
Are you really going to debate that (generally speaking;)) dual threat QBs take less time to make an impact?
Nope....kinda why I'd like a scrambler to be the backup....

No you are correct....but some DO take off running....oh, I still don't like Eli....pocket passer is the way for longevity...but some of them could succeed right away if not for the coaching around them. And trying to fit a square peg(spread college QB), into a round hole (insert some OC "genius" offense)

Why The LA Rams Are An NFC Powerhouse - Dave Dameshek

. .....A solid win Sunday tells the nation and those media talking heads that there is a new sheriff in town, and better than that, it proves to us true fans that this new era in Rams football is indeed a locomotive steaming towards our first play-off run in more than a decade. jmo.

A solid win Sunday will just mean that the Redskins get to enjoy the next week as the worst team in the league.

Anyone watching the show "Ozark" on NETFLIX?

I am so down with this. I mean, he was always an ok actor, but this? Effing Fantastic!
Laura Linney, well I knew she was great but she took it to a whole nuther level.
Lastly, I often get annoyed with kid actors, that they are too whiny or too smart/strong in reality. I thought all the younger actors were tremendous as well, cant think of a weak link
Did you guys not like Arrested Development? One of the greatest comedies ever on television.

Aaron Donald will be on a "pitch count" against the Redskins

The Rams have yet to definitively say that defensive tackle Aaron Donald will play on Sunday against Washington. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips made it fairly clear that Donald will indeed go.

Asked by reporters how much he plans to play Donald, whose holdout ended five days ago, Phillips didn’t say, “It hasn’t been decided that he’ll play” or anything like that. Instead, the answer implies clearly that Phillips expects to see him on the field.

“It’s more of a pitch count I think,” Phillips said. “But it’s a number of plays and we’ll see how he is. He looked to be in good shape. You know, football shape and shape are two different things because you’re carrying a lot more weight with pads on and so forth. But he doesn’t seem to be bothered too much by the reps we’re giving him in practice. It’s not wearing him out, so we’ll make sure in the ball game that we watch him.”

Phillips isn’t sweating the fact that Donald will be transitioning from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense.

“When you have a great player, I think it’s really not the coaching, I’m sorry to say,” Phillips said. “I think coaching makes a difference, I do think coaching — I wouldn’t be in coaching if I didn’t think it makes a difference and I wouldn’t be in it if I didn’t think we could help good players or even great players get better, so that’s what we try to do. But once you get that caliber of a player, you just have to scheme things where you get him one-on-one as much as you can, things like that.

“When he goes in there, we tell him, ‘Go.’ It’s not real complicated for him. . . . [H]e knows the defense pretty well already. There’s a few things that he had to clean up, but a lot of his play is one-on-one, beat the guy in front of you.”

That’s something Donald can do as well as anyone who has played the position since Warren Sapp. And it sure seems like Donald will be doing it on Sunday, regardless of whether he gets a new contract before then.
The "Pitch Counts"/ ie Snap Counts on all the Rams players are goig to be important to watch this week because we have a short week until we Play the 49ers on "Thursday-Night Football"!!

Defensive Snaps Week 1 Vs Colts

They (turfshowtimes.com) do a great job with this that includes the offense . The blowout win skews the numbers but, gave the Rams a chance to get the backups a chance to get some PT early in the year. The Rams only had about 50 defensive snaps due to the poor Colts offense. Ogletree, Barron and Johnson saw the most snaps last year at 100%, 99.72% and 87.43 (TJ McDonald 98.7% last year). As noted in the article Quinn came out in nickle defense which would seem to be a pass down. For those that are wondering Aaron Donald played in 76.06% of plays last year. Forecast is in the mid 70's and partly cloudy so not as bad as the opener at around 90. I was NOT impressed with the early pressure the Rams put on the QB last week. Box score said 4 sacks but, in the first half Tolzien had time to throw. It will be interesting to see how more snaps Quinn gets and how many Donald gets against a much better Redskins offensive line. Donald taking some snaps away from the other defensive tackles could give them an improve chance for creating pressure. Hopefully, Phillips comes up with some pressure schemes to get Cousins off his mark and game. Should be interesting.

Thoughts.
