He made a clutch play that none of our WRs last year could have made, on a 3rd down when we were down by 10 points, which led to a TD. That's a #1 WR.

He's doing fine. I'm sure the deep shots will come.

Rams see need to boost their run game and slow opponents’ attack

THOUSAND OAKS — The Rams saw too much of Washington’s run game and not enough of their own.

There’s no doubt about the first part. Washington ran for 229 yards and two touchdowns in their victory over the Rams on Sunday. The defensive breakdown seemed startling for a Rams front seven that dominated a week earlier and should have been better with the return of Aaron Donald.

“As the game progressed, I thought we settled in,” Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday. “But credit to Washington. I thought they did a nice job with some of the things that were running schematically, and they made those plays.”

Defensive adjustments will be necessary, particularly since the Rams face San Francisco on Thursday, and 49ers running back Carlos Hyde rushed for 124 yards against a stout Seattle defense on Sunday.

Then there’s the Rams’ offense, which felt disjointed for much of Sunday’s game. Penalties and mistakes didn’t help, but McVay, the Rams’ play-caller, also seemed a bit out of rhythm. The Rams called 30 pass plays and 18 run plays, compared to a week earlier, when they passed 34 times and ran 30 times.

The early-game situation didn’t help. The Rams trailed 13-0 early in the second quarter and had run only 10 offensive plays, so McVay indicated he over-relied on the pass game to try to catch up quickly.

“I just thought there were some uncharacteristic decisions and maybe some indecisiveness on my part,” McVay said. “When you go into a game, you always envision how you want to put your players in good spots, and I didn’t necessary follow through on that plan, based on the way things played out.”

Rams running back Todd Gurley had only nine carries for 47 yards in the first three quarters Sunday, but even though the Rams were trailing, McVay turned to Gurley in the fourth quarter. Gurley had seven carries for 41 yards as part of a 14-play drive that temporarily tied the game at 20-20.

Even before the second-quarter deficit, the Rams seemed hesitant to go to Gurley, as he had only two carries on their first nine plays. It probably didn’t help Gurley’s early-game momentum that he fumbled on the Rams’ 10th play, an error that led to a field goal and a 13-0 Washington lead.

Still, McVay was highly self-critical, immediately after the game and on Monday.

“We always talk about coachability,” McVay said, “and certainly if I’m not being coachable or being critical of myself when I’m not doing the things I need to, in order to be helpful and put players in position to get wins, that’s something that you have to be aware of and you can’t be afraid of that.”

McVay decided to cancel what had been scheduled as a “jog-thru” practice Monday at Cal Lutheran. The Rams will hold a full practice on Tuesday and travel to the Bay Area on Wednesday.

UP AND DOWN
Donald was displeased with his play Sunday in his first game after a six-week contract holdout. Donald recorded two tackles, including one for a loss, and played 48 of the Rams’ 71 defensive snaps.

“I thought he did some good things as the game progressed,” McVay said, “made some plays and affected some of the schemes they were running. Some of the things that make Aaron rare did show up. Like anybody else, being able to get back into a rhythm will be important for him, and we’ll see him get more and more comfortable as the season progresses.”

INJURY REPORT
Even though the Rams didn’t practice, they were required to issue an injury-report estimate. McVay said starting cornerback Kayvon Webster (shoulder), tight end Gerald Everett (thigh) and running back Malcolm Brown (hamstring) all are day to day.

Webster didn’t play against Washington, but the Rams could regain the services of cornerback Troy Hill, who has completed his two-game NFL suspension. Hill was not allowed to practice during his suspension, and McVay indicated he wasn’t sure whether Hill would be ready to play against San Francisco.

Coliseum grass needs a break...nothing wrong with road games....

Another positive I noticed is that the defense did look a little better in the second half particularly against the run.
At least we did make some halftime adjustments that seemed to work.

I think it was pretty much a wash as far as McVay versus Gruden they just really beat us in the trenches.

Someone was taking a few pics, but it wasn't me...LOL. Too busy Q'n!! Most of my spare time was spent chatting with peeps and having good dialog with my Modelo's :cheers:

But then you have to question the effectiveness of staying in there. Let's say he decides to tough it out, but can't actually see straight... like literally, cannot see straight. Players are fuzzy and/or doubled, and for some reason he can only see them if he doesn't actually look right at them, he can only sort of see them if he turns his head and tries to catch them out of the corner of his eye. Oh, and forget about colors, they're all kind of them same.

Would you want that guy trying to throw crossing routes?

There is being tough, and then there is hurting your team because you're trying to be tough...

Watkins and Woods is the reason why Goff keeps finding Kupp, Everett, Higbee, and Gurley. They're doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing.

You take either out of the game, and you'll see that coverage shift.

Week 1 they focused on Watkins.. We hurt them with Woods and Kupp.

Last week they focused on Watkins and Woods and chipped Kupp a lot. It helped that the field was in poor condition.

Eventually though they're going to focus more on Woods and Kupp and that's when we hurt them with Watkins.

It was a huge game for them when you look at their upcoming schedule. It was a must win and they played like it.

As mentioned during the broadcast, I am sure their staff was getting tired of hearing how important McVay was to them, especially some of the older guys. Like they said on the broadcast, they like him, but i think that storyline got to them a bit.

Guys who need fewer snaps:

1. Quinn. His role is looking like situational pass rusher. Dude got creased and lost contain, run over and through all game when he was in there yesterday.

2. Austin. Even 9 snaps is too many. No situational awareness, plays dumb, the dude just adds very little and I'd rather see some of the younger guys get some of his snaps.

3. Woods. 90% is too high for what he's giving us. I'd cut his snaps a bit and work in some of the younger wideouts.

4. Higbee. 84% with very little to speak of in production other than a couple real nice blocks. Disappointing to me personally, as I expected more from him.

5. Barron. 96% snaps and many of them not good. Had issues in game 1 as well. Something needs to give here.

Guys who need more snaps:

1. Kupp. Goff needs to quit eyeballin him when he's the target but still the kid could use more than 60%. He's already earned that.

2. Reynolds. He's big, physical, and has a good catch radius. Let's get him in there a bit more, nothing crazy but let's see what he can do.

3. Ebukam. I've seen a few of us mention him at ILB, not sure if he can do it but it would be nice to see them work him in a little. He's got good strength and doesn't wilt when a guy puts a hat on him. Might strengthen the interior a bit, but either way I'd like to see more of him.

4. Walker. I don't think any of the DL had a good game yesterday. But Walker is a guy that I like what I've seen thus far from him.

5. Littleton. Like with Ebukam above still not sure to what extent him spelling Barron would give us. He's probably a liability in coverage moreso than Barron tbh, but giving him a few more snaps a game wouldn't kill us.

nothing about the Redskins is funny right now for me.

Beating the Whiners is the best way to get on my good side and make me forget about yesterday. McVay's family has been a part of the Whiners organization in the past so I'm sure he is well aware of the rivalry. And Goff grew up a Whiner/Joe Montana fan unfortunately. So should be well known I'm sure.

I always wonder what someone has going through their head when they grew up a fan of the rival they are now with. I'm sure they hardly think about it but you know it has to cross their mind once in a while. I couldn't imagine growing up a Rams fan and then being drafted by the Whiners if I was blessed with the ability. Would be really strange at first.

Anyway, beat those Whiners!!

Yeah they had way too many short drives and punts. They need to work on getting in synch so they can sustain drives. They just took away opportunities from themselves yesterday.

100% YES. And part is on Goff, he missed Watkins a couple of times yesterday and at least one could have been a big play. I noticed on slow mo replays when they show different angles that he had him available but went elsewhere. It'll change when they finish getting the kinks out.

Biggest question for them will be their OC and DC IMO. Shanny did a great job calling the offense but now they have a historically very conservative Sark calling the offense.

The Rams missed a golden opportunity to earn some respect and get an important win in the conference.
Just can't get over the hump . YET
